The family of murdered high school student Hae Min Lee has requested an evidentiary hearing regarding the decision to vacate the conviction of Adnan Syed in her death, claiming prosecutors treated the family in a “callous and unconstitutional manner” by not giving them enough notice or an opportunity to comment on the decision. Steve Kelly, an attorney for the family, says that while a reversal of the decision is unlikely, “We need a public airing of this stuff, if for no other reason than accountability and transparency in the criminal justice process.

There’s a sweet message at the heart of “The Bromley Boys” about finding the heroism in mediocrity, thought it’s one not best served by the film being entirely mediocre itself. Adapted from a sepia-tinted memoir by British author Dave Roberts — detailing the childhood origins of his obsession with the consistently second-rate Bromley soccer team — Steve Kelly’s lightweight film spins allegedly true events into the stuff of pure sitcom: affable enough, but so glibly inauthentic as to make “Bend It Like Beckham” look like cinéma vérité by comparison. It’s curious how the world’s most popular sport maintains such a thin roster of truly classic movies in its honor; that is unchanged here.
Perhaps ongoing “Game of Thrones” mania is to credit for a belated, somewhat surprising U.S. release for “The Bromley Boys,” a year after it failed to score on home turf: It’s led...

Exclusive: British soccer comedy The Bromley Boys, starring Game of Thrones’ Brenock O’Connor, has landed a U.S. deal via Patrick Dicesare’s Artist Rights Distribution.
The company has taken North American distribution rights to the film, which is based on the novel by Dave Roberts. It will receive a theatrical release later this year.
Directed by Steve Kelly, it stars O’Connor as Roberts, a 15-year old who supports with his local Non-League club Bromley Fc, one of the worst team in the country. Alan Davies (Flack), Martin McCutcheon (Love Actually), Jamie Foreman (Layer Cake) and Ross Anderson (Wolf) also star.
The movie follows Roberts as he supports the team, which has seen better days. A loner in love with football, he finds it hard to fit in at school and he longs to be accepted into the inner sanctum of Bromley Fc’s most loyal fans. Befriending three older fans,...

The ads are real. The network should not be.
For 24 hours, ESPN is operating what should really be a fictional network best left as part of a script to a funny cult-favorite film. “The Ocho,” an ESPN outlet devoted to niche sports like pickleball, cornhole and something called “chess boxing” is running on ESPN 2 throughout August 8 – complete with special commercials from KFC. The lineup includes two airings of the 2004 20th Century Fox film, “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” in which a group of misfits assemble to play in a national dodgeball championship televised by a completely made-up. “ESPN 8: The Ocho.” Today’s efforts, however, are very real.
“They are giving less celebrated sports a moment in the spotlight,” says Steve Kelly, director of media and marketing for KFC, which is sponsoring the off-kilter concept with clever ads that show athletes trying to succeed in sports with the chain’s iconic buckets over their heads.

Before footage for this Slamdance premier even dropped I checked out what was available at the time, and that was just stills. I wasn't impressed so I pretty much wrote this one off, but luckily I revisited it some time later to find a great surprise, one amazing looking film.

The Slamdance competition is open only to under-$1 million budgeted films from first-time filmmakers and runs at the same time as Sundance (in Utah) to show a more truer "independent" film style. This year they've got some great looking films, including a sweet looking vampire flick which has the Karate Kid Ralph Macchio himself, Rosencantz and Guildenstern are Undead. I Sell the Dead which was well received at Tad will be opening the fest. Also playing will be The Broken Lizard's latest film The Slammin' Salmon, and Mum and Dad.

- Glenn McQuaid’s black comedy horror film “I Sell the Dead” and the latest from the Broken Lizard clan are among the 29 films from first time filmmakers in both narrative and docu categories that have been announced for the 15th edition of the Slamdance. I’ve never really cared for the film fest, only because it simultaneously takes place during the Sundance film fest, but what I find really appealing this year is if you are a buyer looking to cut expenses this year you can download the entire fringe film fest from www.indieroad.net/slamdance. With the exclusion of the short film selections, the festival's four programming sections (Narrative Features, Documentaries, Special Screenings and Twilight Screenings) is listed below. "I Sell the Dead," Glenn McQuaid's darkly comic horror tale about bumbling grave robbers starring Dominic Monaghan and Ron Perlman, will serve as the opening-night film of the 15th annual Slamdance Film Festival, which runs Jan. 15-23 in Park City.
The fest will screen 29 narrative and documentary features, 20 of which come from the U.S. and 31% of which were directed by women. The 100-film lineup also includes shorts and, for the first time, music videos.
"This year we look forward to increasing our audience through new online formats we believe have the ability, in the long run, to level the playing field for the independent filmmaker," Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter said.
Bringing the fest to a worldwide audience for the first time, the films also will stream live at a new Web site, indieroad.net/slamdance, part of Slamdance's newly formed online venture with Indieroad.net.
