Starting with “Labyrinth”, Lijo Pellissery begun to move away from the ultra-fast, ultra-tense, ultra-violent style he had established with film like “Angamaly Diaries” and “Jallikattu”, slowing down and becoming slightly more arty. This change is cemented in “Like An Afternoon Dream” which implements a rather oneiric approach throughout, although the tension is not exactly missing from here either.

After visiting Velankanni, Tamil Nadu, a group of Malayali tourists are returning to Kerala. Their tour leader, James, who is on the bus along with his wife, Sally, is a hard-core Malayalam who seems to be bothered by everything Tamil; the food, the music, the language. As the majority of the members of the group are tired, eventually fall asleep, including James, who, at some point though, wakes up and asks the driver to stop in a remote small village. He...

Anthony Carrigan was supposed to die in the first episode of Barry. And yet, his cheerful Chechen mobster in the crime-comedy series managed to survive for four seasons.
“I was really rewarded with the opportunity to have this arc with Hank in which he starts off as this lovable goofball who’s continuously failing upward and his naivete gets him through these experiences unscathed,” Carrigan tells Rolling Stone.
Barry, which has nearly a dozen Emmy nods this year, follows war veteran turned hitman Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) who, searching for a new calling,...

In 2009, Sally Menke, the splicer extraordinaire who cut her way to film industry prominence as Quentin Tarantino's most trusted collaborator, wrote, "Editors are the quiet heroes of movies and I like it that way." I emphatically agree and disagree with this observation. On one hand, the best film editing is seamless; watching a movie should be an entrancing experience, and it's the editor's job to not break the spell. Yes, there are singular, medium-altering cuts (the entire Odessa Steps sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's silent classic "Potemkin;" the blowing out of a match whisking us off to the desert in David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia;" the bone-to-spaceship transition in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Opera"), but they're grand gestures deftly woven into the fabric of the movie. They pull you deeper into their worlds, not take you out of them.
Watch enough movies, however, and you become attuned to certain editorial rhythms.

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, contributing editor Tony Ruiz spoke in-depth with Henry Winkler (“Barry”) about Season 4 of his HBO dark comedy, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
Spoiler Alert! The show’s final episodes find former acting coach Gene Cousineau (Winkler) suddenly accused of all of Barry Berkman’s (Bill Hader) crimes, to the point that even Gene’s own son believes in his father’s guilt. The series ends rather tragically for Gene, as he kills Barry in cold blood and then gets sent to prison.
When Winkler first learned about his character’s ultimate fate, “I went and had an avocado toast because I started to shake,” he confessed in our webchat. “I’m a pretty verbal guy. I had nothing to say.” The actor later added, “I think that in his mind,...

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. Two-time Oscar nominee Coogan stars alongside two-time Oscar...

IFC Films nabbed North American rights to “The Lost King,” which will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the feel-good true story stars Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley, an amateur historian who uncovered the remains of King Richard the III after they had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching — and searching — for the remnants, even when family, friends and academics openly doubted her.
Steve Coogan (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pope) is playing Philippa’s husband, John Langley. “The Lost King” reunites Frears with Coogan and Pope, who previously teamed on the Oscar-nominated “Philomena.”
“I’m delighted that ‘The Lost King’ has found a home in North America with IFC Films,” Frears said. “It was hugely enjoyable to work again with Steve and Jeff and we were blessed with an incredible performance from Sally. Toronto is always...
