The Mourning Portrait is a supernatural thriller which Belladonna Productions will shoot later this year. The film stars Wentworth Miller (Prison Break, Resident Evil: Afterlife), as well as Dermot Mulroney, (Zodiac, Burn after Reading, Must Love Dogs), Diane Ladd (Chinatown, Inland Empire, Primary Colors), and Melissa Leo (21 Grams, Frozen River). Built around the practice of post-mortem photography in 1920s Appalachia, it is the story of a newly widowed bootlegger named Miller (Dm) who enlists the services of a traveling mourning portrait photographer (Wm). Grief turns to terror when the mysterious visitor unveils his unearthly powers and Miller's daughter disappears. North Carolina native, Paul Schattel, wrote and will direct the film: "The Mourning Portrait is patterned after those eerie post-mortem images themselves: Elegant, stately, restrained . and very disturbing. You ask what subgenre hasn’t been exploited? The post-mortem photography one! In fact, I believe the filmmakers behind the upcoming supernatural horror flick The Mourning Portrait might be the first to focus an entire horror film around it.
But that’s exactly what writer/director Paul Schattel is doing. Built around the practice of post-mortem photography in 1920s Appalachia, it is the story of a newly widowed bootlegger named Miller who enlists the services of a traveling mourning portrait photographer. Grief turns to terror when the mysterious visitor unveils his unearthly powers and Miller's daughter disappears.
They’ve certainly got a good cast; Dermot Mulroney (Zodiac), Wentworth Miller (Resident Evil: Afterlife), Diane Ladd (Chinatown) and Melissa Leo (21 Grams) are on board, and if you’re ready, then dig on the teaser below.

Back in the early days of photography, when people died, their families would pay to have photos taken of their dearly departed as a means to preserve their memories of being together. Ghoulish -- yes. Hard to look at -- sometimes. Perfect fodder for a horror movie -- Definitely.
Shock Till You Drop got the first details on director Paul Schattel's latest film for the company who brought us (Ack!) Funny Games, Belladonna Feature Films, starring Garret Dillahunt, Melissa Leo, and Diane Ladd, The Mourning Portrait.
"It's about those creepy post-mortem photos often taken in the early 20th Century," he tells Shock. "People who read the script remarked how it felt (tonally at least) like Guillermo del Toro's 'The Devil's Backbone' - sort of a thinking man's horror film."
Shooting begins soon; in the interim check out the promo teaser below.
