Naomi Ackie gives audiences a glimpse into the life of Whitney Houston in director Kasi Lemmons’ new biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and the new film is packed with a number of Houston’s hits.
Working with movement coach Polly Bennett and vocal coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods, Ackie also underwent physical transformation with the help of numerous wigs and false teeth to cover the natural gap in her two front teeth.
Ackie doesn’t sing most songs in the film — she lip syncs to Houston’s perfect tracks instead — but she mimics Houston’s style of singing with great detail. She steps in for performances by Houston that were not recorded, such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” and “Jesus Loves Me” from her choir-singing days. Ackie also portrays a nervous Whitney who is thrust onstage by her mother, who knows Clive Davis is in attendance,...

Go-go music is the soundtrack of Washington, D.C. Despite a four-decade history and a few national hits like “Da Butt,” by Experience Unlimited (E.U.), and “Shake Your Thang,” by Salt-n-Pepa with E.U., the funk offshoot, often referred to as a cousin of hip-hop, is a proudly regional music — born in the nation’s capital and embraced and supported by fans in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Dolly Parton, who said last week she would gracefully accept an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame if it were offered, will have to do just that: The country music superstar was among the nominees selected for a spot in the hall today.
The other inductees chosen through the Hall’s membership voting process are Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eminem, Lionel Richie, Eurythmics and Carly Simon.
In addition to those inductees, the Rock Hall’s board, as is traditional, selected its own slate of honorees in various special categories: Judas Priest, musicians Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, singers Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten, and executives Sylvia Robinson, Jimmy Iovine and Allen Grubman.
John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, announced the inductees on the Rock Hall’s website today. In a statement, he said, that the “diverse group of inductees each had a profound impact...

The story of hip hop has been told before – a world created by the likes of DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, the Sugarhill Gang and Run-dmc has had its fair share of ink and moving pictures.
Many of the behind the scenes figures such as Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson, Def Jam’s Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons and Death Row founder Suge Knight have also been profiled.
However, the story of some of the true power brokers even further in the shadows has never been told. That is the story of Hip Hop Uncovered, a six-part series for FX that launches tonight, Friday, February 12.
Through the lens of five key people – Big U, Deb Antney, Bimmy, Trick Trick and Haitian Jack – the docuseries tells the story of the genre from the streets up, revealing how it shaped culture over the last 40 years.

“He may be a jerk, but he’s a great man. He’s brilliant,” says Heather (Stefania Lavie Owen), the neglected daughter of Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), in “The Beach Bum,” Harmony Korine’s latest exploration of charismatic and hedonistic human disasters. Heather’s father is an acclaimed poet, his artistic genius seemingly on the wane, who lives in South Florida like Hunter S. Thompson if he were a character in Korine’s fractured comedy about middle-American weirdness, “Trash Humpers.”
That Moondog isn’t trying to have sex with garbage cans and mailboxes would seem more a case of it having slipped his drug-addled mind, rather than a distaste for the practice itself. Moondog is also quite rich, much like James Franco’s character in Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” thanks to having married money in the form of the sexually voracious Minnie (Isla Fisher), whose emotional and physical adoration of her...

“Dear White People” creator Justin Simien will direct Warner Bros.’ untitled Sylvia Robinson biopic.
The movie has been in the works since 2014 when Paula Wagner acquired the film rights to the life story of Robinson, the founder of Sugar Hill Records. Robinson’s career stretches back to being half of the duo Mickey & Sylvia (best known for the 1957 hit “Love Is Strange”). She died in 2011 at the age of 76.
“Dear White People,” a comedy centered on African-American college students, won the special jury prize at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Simien directed from his own script and produced. Sebastian Lund, action hero?
It seems damned unlikely, but geeky, awkward lab tech Sebastian finds himself on the inside of a potential prison break in NCIS: New Orleans Season 3 Episode 4.
Remember all the parental laments about how video games were bad for you? Well, that's certainly the case for Sebastian, whose skill at an escape multi-person virtual reality game draws the attention of the wrong people, who want to break a ruthless Serbian smuggler out of jail.
And Sebastian reacts exactly as I would have expected: with non-stop chatter and skittishness. He was kind of like Don Knotts in a guard uniform once inside Lafitte Prison.
Still he uses the computer skills that got him in this predicament to help himself out: hacking into the prison internet to contact Pride, and being so obvious on the tablet he was using that Patton could follow right along.

“30 Rock” was a show rich with odd and diverse sorts; its ensemble included a startingly large number of Academy Award winners/nominees (at least six! And don’t even get us started on the Emmy champs!). This odd collection of characters, in many respects, remain unforgettable even years after the show’s end. Ranking the characters who appeared in three or more episodes wasn’t easy. But by following the ethos established by the show, it also wasn’t hard.
56. Hazel Wassername
As fun as Kristen Schaal is in other roles, something about Hazel went too broad at the wrong times. “30 Rock” always danced on the line between reality and cartoon, but Hazel was basically CGI.

Did fantasy dramas Chocky, The Box Of Delights and Dramarama leave an impression on you as a kid? Revisit those nightmares here...
Spooky, always magical and occasionally downright scary dramas are the bedrock of kids' television. For me, the pinnacle of this sort of programme was reached in the 1980s. The decade saw a new approach to both traditional and contemporary drama by both UK broadcasters: ITV committed itself to regular seasons of children's plays with Dramarama (1983-89), a kind of youth version of the venerable BBC Play For Today (1970-84), which saw the 1988 television debut of one David Tennant. The BBC, building upon an impressive body of work from the early 70s onwards, produced some of its very best family drama in this era, embracing cutting edge technology to bring treats like The Box Of Delights (1984) and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (1988) to the screen.

Our prayers have been answered: We're finally getting even more Empire in our lives. Well, sort of. It seems that Warner Brothers has tapped Carlito Rodriguez and Malcolm Spellman, two writers from the mega-successful show, to pen another movie drama—this time in feature length form. The flick will tell the story of the late Sylvia Robinson, co-founder of Sugar Hill Records and widely known as the "mother of hip-hop." She was one of the few female figures in a male-dominated world, and is credited with one of the first songs to hit "mainstream." In other words, it's basically going to be Empire, the movie. At least that's what we're hoping...

Is the phrase "The 'Empire' Effect" a *thing* yet? If not, in time I'm sure it will be. Today's news helps make it so... A pair of writers on the hit Fox series - Carlito Rodriguez (also once editor-in-chief of The Source, and writer for HBO's "The Leftovers") and Malcolm Spellman (a record label owner and manager of "black roots" singer Fantastic Negrito, who also co-scripted "Our Family Wedding") - have been "borrowed" to script the previously announced biopic on the late Sugar Hill Records co-founder Sylvia Robinson, a singer, songwriter and record producer, who formed the pioneering hip-hop group Sugarhill...

Among its many, many charms, Empire makes us want to play a fun guessing game. Is there a real Lucious Lyon? Is his label supposed to be like Roc-a-Fella? Is Cookie based on Sylvia Robinson? Could Empire Entertainment really go public? Trying to figure out where fact and fiction intersect is almost as entertaining as embracing the show’s over-the-top plotlines, baby-mama drama, and white-collar intrigue. It’s not just us non-music-biz laypeople — industry insiders have also been hooked by the show’s attempts (and feints) at aping actual life. “I love the Cookie Monster,” says L.A. Reid, CEO of Epic Records, who worked with Empire co-creator Lee Daniels on Precious. “I identify with her. She’s funny, she deals with talent well, she has so much game. She’s real to me. She feels like the industry.” Reid says Cookie’s unstoppable hustle reminds him of the “greats of our industry.

Sylvia Robinson, a singer, songwriter and record producer, who formed the pioneering hip-hop group Sugarhill Gang and made the first commercially successful rap recording with them, died at 75 years old, in September 2011, of congestive heart failure, after being in a coma. She built a successful career as an R&B singer before she and her husband, Joe Robinson, formed Sugar Hill Records in the 1970's, and went on to nurse a musical genre that came to dominate mainstream music. In the late 1960s, Ms. Robinson became one of the few women to produce records in any genre when she and her husband founded All Platinum Records. She played an important role in the...

2013 was a big year for comics, both mainstream and independent. DC celebrated Superman’s 75th birthday with the launch of the much hyped (and delayed) Superman Unchained by superstar creators Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. There were also the big crossover events “Trinity War” and its follow up Forever Evil which will continue into 2014. This year also marked the return of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and other great Vertigo series, like Scott Snyder’s The Wake and Jeff Lemire’s Trillium.Marvel celebrated the X-Men’s 50th anniversary with the time-traveling event “Battle of the Atom” and the launch of Brian Wood’s X-Men, which featured an all female lineup. Marvel had its share of big events (Age of Ultron, Infinity), but it also found room for quirky, offbeat books, like Hawkeye, Young Avengers, and Superior Foes of Spider-Man. 2013 was an especially huge year for Image Comics. It enlisted big name creators like Matt Fraction,...

You may have heard the song “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang (“I said a hip hop, a hippie, a hippie to the hip hop”), but what you might not know is this song helped hip hop break into the mainstream and helped a genre that, up until that point had been brushed off as a fad, start to take root in our musical history. Even though the group was changing the face (and sound) of the music industry, The Sugarhill Gang found themselves on top of the charts with barely a dime to their name. While this is not the first time we have heard stories of talent swindled by shady and greedy record executives, the story of the Sugarhill Gang is not just about losing money, it is about having their name and the true identity of the band member’s themselves stolen from them. The Sugarhill Gang was originally made up of Wonder Mike...

Los Angeles - Rap pioneer Sylvia Robinson, who was a driving force behind the first-ever mainstream rap hit, Rapper's Delight, has died at the age of 76 from congestive heart failure, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Robinson, sometimes called 'the mother of hip-hop,' was the co-owner with her husband Joe of Sugar Hill Records, which released the hit song by the Sugarhill Gang in 1979. The song was the first to introduce many of the basic elements of rap to a mainstream audience and reached number 36 on the Us charts. Robinson was one of the first producers to recognize the potential of the spoken street music that was emerging from New York's street scene in the late 1970s.
