This year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards stayed ahead of the Oscar curve once more, announcing their winners on Sunday, February 25 in the usual chilly white tent on the Santa Monica beach (and on YouTube). With Oscar voting not over until the evening of February 27, the winners at the 39th Spirits could gain valuable Oscar momentum.
Host Aidy Bryant played to a warm crowd who chuckled at her jokes. The Spirits are “also known as the bisexual Oscars,” she said. Being an awards show host is tricky, she added, “I could be panned, considered out of touch, and sexist, and potentially be slapped. Worst case: nobody mentions me.”
When she tried roasting the celebrities, she called “May December” star Natalie Portman a “stupid bitch,” Sterling K. Brown “a Stupid K. Bitch,” and said of Charles Melton, “everyone wants to have sex with you, you stupid bitch” and Greta Lee, “you...

In recent years, classic Mexican horror has gained a deeper appreciation and curiosity from international horror audiences wanting to experience the unique terror of Mexican horror.
Mexico Macabre: Four Sinister Tales from the Alameda Films Fault 1959-1963, the box set released by Indicator, highlights four iconic films from the golden age of Mexican horror cinema, Black Pit of Dr. M, The Witch’s Mirror, The Brainiac, and The Curse of the Crying Woman, from the influential Mexican production company Alameda Films. These films broke boundaries and pioneered new artistic styles in Mexican cinema, blending the influence of gothic imagery from American and European cinema with Mexican culture and history. The artistic influences of these films can be seen deeply embedded in the horror films and filmmakers of Mexico from the gothic style of Guillermo del Toro to the modern trailblazing Mexican horror films Tigers are Not Afraid and Huesera: The Bone Woman.

From the jump, Wyatt Flores has made mental health advocacy a part of his songwriting and live performances. His song “Please Don’t Go” became a hit with fans for its vulnerable message to a loved one to not take their own life, and he recently released a cover of the Fray’s similarly minded 2006 hit “How to Save a Life.” On Monday, Flores told followers in a lengthy post on Instagram that “the sacrifices I’ve made to get the opportunity to be on stage have caught up to...

Well before it even dropped, Netflix's new show "Neon" found itself embroiled in a bit of controversy. After all, how could a show that follows the trials and tribulations of a young reggaetonero on his path to fame allegedly not include Puerto Rican voices in its conception when the island - along with Panama - helped to pioneer the genre and take it to new heights? Well, after a few course corrections and the participation of reggaeton leyenda Daddy Yankee himself, "Neon" is finally available to stream. And while the criticism about the reported lack of Puerto Rican participation was warranted, it doesn't tell the whole story of what the show's trying to achieve in the first place.
You see, "Neon" isn't a story about the perreo born in Puerto Rico. Nor is it a story about the reggae en Español produced by Panama. It is a story about the global,...

On Entourage, the central tension always involved the question of whether Vince was gonna do the movie. Only there was never really any tension, because of course Vince was gonna do the movie — or, if he didn’t, things would in some other way work out just fine for him, E, Turtle, and even Johnny Drama. Yet for a show with no real stakes and only a modest level of humor (especially if you weren’t amused by Ari screaming actionable insults at Lloyd), it ran for eight seasons. And a movie!

A reggaeton star is about to be born. On Thursday, Netflix will premiere Neon, a comedy show that follows rising reggaetón star Santi, played by Tyler Dean Flores, as he moves to Miami to pursue his music dreams after his song “Exagerao” goes viral online. Ahead of the scripted show’s premiere, Rolling Stone exclusively premieres the music video for the song that catapults Santi.
“The music video is one of the first times we see Santi do his thing, showing off his talent but also his charm,” the show...

Beth Holloway, Natalee Holloway’s mother, expressed relief on Wednesday that she could finally achieve closure about how Natalee died. After 18 years as the prime suspect in the teen’s murder, Joran van der Sloot finally confessed that he beat Natalie to death on a beach in Aruba after she rejected his sexual advances. She was on a high school graduation trip at the time. He then dragged her body into the water and went home and watched pornography, according to Daily Beast.

Netflix’s official trailer for its upcoming Daddy Yankee-executive produced series “Neon” showed its star, Santi, (Tyler Dean Flores) is no “one-hit-wonder.”
“This is it, we’re moving to Miami,” says Felix (Jordan Mendoza) in the trailer’s opening.
“I’m going to be the biggest Reggaeton star in the world,” Santi chimes in.
And Santi means what he says, as he and his two friends Ness (Emma Ferreira) and Felix set their sights on South Florida to pursue their dreams of putting Santi on the map as a Reggaeton artist in the music industry — even it means preparing for the biggest meeting of their lives inside a gas station bathroom or living in a 2009 Toyota Corolla.
Despite the odds against them, “We have a plan,” says Ness, who acts as Santi’s manager alongside Felix, who serves as Santi’s creative director. Together, the trio is determined to...

The concept of Fall TV — old-fashioned, time slot-dependent programming, on the least-cool delivery platform — was on life support before the writers strike set it on fire. Now, the actors just came by with a can of kerosene.
Shortly after the writers joined the picket lines May 2, broadcast networks began to tout “strike-proof” fall schedules comprised of unscripted programming, batch-taped animation, and live sports. Those didn’t exactly hold, and now the SAG-AFTRA strike creates a fresh new headache: promotion of the product.
Come September, there will be some live-action scripted still programming available; those were in the can before WGA members took to the streets. What you will not see is the shows’ recognizable stars plugging those projects, and an affable sales pitch from a pretty face can be the difference between a flop and a hit.
Take NBC for an example, which even after Wednesday’s major schedule...

Popularly known as Alba Flores, this Spanish actress was born Gonzalez Villa in 1986 to Antonio Flores and Anna Villa. For her acting career, she would later change her name to Alba Flores, for which she is known today. Flores was a well-known actor in Spain, but her performance in the hit TV series La Casa De Papel, better known as Money Heist, on Netflix gained her overnight worldwide fame. Flores knew she didn’t need to leave Spain for her acting career to take off. She was right because she is still getting tons of leading roles and working on passion...

The best received of Spanish series at last month’s Málaga Festival, “Nights in Tefía” (“Las Noches de Tefía”) hit the festival with already strong buzz. The latest from Spain’s Buendía Estudios and SVOD service Atresplayer Premium whose titles also include “Veneno” and “Cardo,” “Nights in Tefía” proved a critics’ favourite. Written and directed by Miguel del Arco, a distinguished Spanish playwright and theater director, it turns on Airam Betancor who, living in Tenerife in 2004, recognises an old man shuffling down the street: Robles.
He’s the same man who, 42 years before, as a prison guard at the euphemistically named Tefía Penitentiary Agricultural Colony on Fuerteventura, another Canary Island, had beaten and tortured Airam as a teen inmate of the Francoist labor camp designed as a dumping ground for undesirables, from political dissidents to the socially unruly and homosexuals.

With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...
