Sydney Sweeney and Paul Walter Hauser get tangled in a clash over a rare Native American artifact in the trailer for Americana
Image
Lionsgate brings you a new interconnected crime comedy with an all-star cast. Americana is the new film from Tony Tost, who both writes and directs. The new trailer has dropped, and among the critics’ raves, it’s being hailed as “a breath of fresh air” and is “like an early Tarantino film.” Lionsgate produces the film along with Bron Studios and Alex Saks for his Saks Pictures Company. It’s also made in association with Rhea Films and Hercules Film Fund / Creative Wealth Media.

The cast for Americana includes Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Simon Rex, with Eric Dane, and Zahn McClarnon.

The official synopsis reads, “A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sydney Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military...

Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney in Echo Valley (2025)
Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore know where the bodies are buried in the trailer for Apple TV+’s Echo Valley
Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney in Echo Valley (2025)
Parents often say they’d do anything for their children. Would they help them hide a body? What if the situation spirals out of control and the truth threatens to bubble to the surface? Would they remain the dutiful parent or start to see the problem for what (or who) it truly is? Today, Apple TV+ is debuting a trailer for Echo Valley, a chilling thriller directed by Michael Pearce, starring Sydney Sweeney, Julianne Moore, and Fiona Shaw.

In Echo Valley, Moore plays Kate Garrett, a woman recovering from a personal tragedy while boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Farm, twenty-two remote, Bob Ross painting-worthy acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In the middle of the night, Kate’s recalcitrant daughter, Claire (Sweeney), is covered in blood at her doorstep beside herself. As an unexpected guest shatters Kate’s quiet recovery, things quickly spiral out of control.

Scott Free’s Ridley Scott produces Echo Valley,...

‘Art for Everybody’ Review: An Illuminating Look at an American Painter Far Darker Than His ‘Art’ Let On
Image
He makes art critics cringe, but Thomas Kinkade — whose idyllic paintings of storybook cottages and pastoral landscapes glow as if lit from within — has arguably given more pleasure to the masses than any artist since Norman Rockwell. In theory, one could argue that Walt Disney, Charles Schulz or Margaret “Big Eyes” Keane is more deserving of such an extravagant claim, and yet, it’s only Kinkade whose work was recently estimated to be hanging in roughly one in 20 American homes.

In the end, I suppose it all comes down to what you consider “art.” Do black-velvet Elvis paintings count? How about dogs playing poker, or silk-screen renderings of Campbell soup cans? That’s where the critics enter the picture once again, as few take Kinkade’s kitsch creations — which have been mass-produced as coffee mugs, collectible plates and dust catchers of all kinds — seriously enough to qualify them as art.

Blake Lively: “I take my shirt off in this movie” Convinced Reporter to Do Her Interview Half Naked
Image
Blake Lively has been setting a new standard for celebrity alienation. As more and more alleged information has come out about her situation with Justin Baldoni, the fans have very quickly become haters. The industry seems to have taken a side, and someone who was once Hollywood’s darling has been turned into a villain-adjacent figure.

Amid so much controversy surrounding her professional life, it is only natural that her past is brought up to find traces of the light she is being painted in today. Many clips from interviews and interactions have aged like milk, and the actress has a lot of damage control to do.

With this, a resurfacing clip of her asking her interviewer to take off his shirt certainly does not help her case.

Survivor 47 Episode 13 Recap – A Great Penultimate Episode Sets the Stage for a Strong Finale
Image
What an episode. As stupid as the “two part Survivor finale” spin is, this penultimate episode of Survivor 47 was great. From a perfectly played final 6, to some of the most fun fake idol shenanigans Survivor has ever seen, this episode was awesome. So let’s not waste anymore time and get to it!

Even though it’s not the true finale, Jeff Probst still welcomes us by recapping what has happened so far in Survivor 47. He goes through each player, highlighting what they’ve done to make it this far. It’s the usual filler, but it’s a Survivor finale classic, so let’s roll with it.

‘Terrifier 3’ Made $80 Million. Marketing Cost: $500,000. Here’s How
Image
Don’t call “Terrifier 3” Cineverse’s breakout film. That moment actually came with the surprise success of its predecessor, 2022’s “Terrifier 2.” The original “Terrifier” from 2016 — not released by Cineverse — made only $421,000. Once the sequel landed at Cineverse — then still named Cinedigm — it exploded to an impressive $15.7 million on a shoestring budget, but only after Cineverse scrambled its marketing jets to react in real-time to a viral hit.

For the third “Terrifier” film, CEO Chris McGurk would not be caught off guard again. He and President Erick Opeka used the unusual asset mix of new media they’ve compiled over the last decade plus — everything from a podcast network, a Bob Ross Fast channel, an ad-tech platform, and the horror blog Bloody Disgusting — to create a hyper-targeted theatrical release strategy around “Terrifier 3.”

“We developed a blueprint where streaming and associated assets really supported and made a theatrical release work for an independent film,...

‘Sisters’ Feud’ Netflix Review: Finally, A Family Drama That’s So Bad That It Is Hilarious
Image
Now that we are approaching the tailend of one of the worst years in the history of mankind, my theory that Netflix probably asked creators from all across the globe to come up with the most bizarre crime-fueled family dramas is looking more and more solid. The streaming platform kick-started 2024 with Fool Me Once, which focused on the shenanigans of a singular posh British family. Then there was The Accident, which involved several Mexican families. So did We Were Kings. Blood Legacy and Savage Beauty highlighted the opulence and wealth of elite South African families. Despite featuring actors from Australia, Ireland, and even India, The Perfect Couple talked about the stupidity of rich American folks. And then Territory took us to the great Down Under. But the issue with all of these titles was that they were bloody boring. I mean, they were supposed to be scandalous and the plotlines...

“Stop the bleeding already, just cancel it”: Taylor Sheridan Might Drag Yellowstone for Season 6 Despite Kevin Costner’s Exit and Fans Aren’t Liking it Anymore
Image
Since 2018, the cowboy-themed neo-Western Yellowstone has lassoed the hearts of viewers. Despite initially stumbling, the series quickly saddled up under the visionary direction of its co-creator, Taylor Sheridan, cultivating an immensely loyal fan base with every twist and turn.

Built brick by brick into a television dynasty that could give John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) Dutton empire a run for its money, the show has become Paramount Network’s shining star.

And the million-dollar question on everyone’s lips is: What’s the future of Yellowstone after Season 5 Part 2? Well, reports are suggesting that the potential sixth season is galloping our way. However, there’s a catch—Costner may not be riding along for the journey.

Ergo, not all fans are eager to hitch their wagon to this new direction, with many grumbling that the show is “over without” The Untouchables star.

What Happened at Marvel Studios' Hall H Panel at Sdcc?

Marvels Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con is always a spectacle, with big guests, stunts, and announcements, and this year was no exception. The panel started off strong with a choir dressed in red and yellow taking the stage to sing Like a Prayer. Various Deadpool variants also danced around the room, which held over six thousand people. Feige took to the stage to celebrate two milestones Deadpool & Wolverine having the biggest opening for an R-rated film ever and the fact that they broke a Guinness World Record for the biggest drone show for a fictional character after their special Celebration of Life panel on Thursday.

Marvel Studios brings Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and more to Comic-Con
Image
Saturday night at San Diego Comic-Con is always a rush. While I’m huddled up in my home office listening to Sleep Token and Iress on repeat, attendees of one of the year’s most exciting entertainment events are witnessing Marvel history as the studio takes charge of Hall H to astound and amaze fans with a unique look at the future of superhero cinema. While riding the wave of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s success at the box office, Kevin Feige and his merry band of creatives are ready to blow minds and tease what’s to come from the House of Ideas!

The Marvel panel opened with a full choir singing Madonna’s 1989 hit “Like a Prayer.” A parade of Deadpools danced on stage, with one dressed like Bob Ross. It was a homoerotic display, with lots of gyrating and enthusiastic thrusting. Some crowd members did not know what to make of the scene.

Ryan Reynolds Throws Shade at His Infamous Green Lantern Movie
Image
Ryan Reynolds, it seems, never misses an opportunity to take shots at his widely panned 2011 Green Lantern movie, recently stating that he intentionally hadn't seen it for a while. The Deadpool & Wolverine star intimated he had to be a "little drunk" to get through viewing the film during the pandemic.

Per Vanity Fair, Reynolds revealed his continued aversion to the film in response to his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman's question about if he had ever seen Green Lantern with his family. "I would actually, genuinely, rather watch just a f***ing 24-hour marathon of Paw Patrol, but I have not watched it as a family. My kids have seen the trailer," he said. The actor shared that he last watched the film during the pandemic when he practically binged all the content of every streaming service. He revealed that Green Lantern was still a tough watch.

In the period ended March 31, total revenue came in at $9.9 million compared with $12.5 million in the same period of the prior year. Snakes on a Plane (2006) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Snakes on a Plane was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

Why Bob Ross Paintings Are Harder to Obtain Than a Picasso
Image
Thanks to a TV-friendly style and amicable persona, Bob Ross endeared himself to generations of TV viewers on his show The Joy of Painting. Despite his image, Bob Ross was maligned by art snobs and had numerous rivals, while his artwork sparked a bitter, contracted legal battle. Bob Ross' paintings are locked away and barred from sale, as he stipulated before his death in 1995, making tracking down a real Ross next to impossible.

On the Mount Rushmore of American public television, alongside Mr. Rogers and Big Bird, reigns a retired Air Force drill sergeant who taught us to take out our aggression on paint brushes. Variety’s Top Cult-Favorite Shows of All Time: ‘Alias,’ ‘Clone High,’ and More
Image
As part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time issue, we asked writers on our staff to name their favorite cult shows — series that may lack the clout, the following, or the prestige to quite notch an entry on our list, but ones for which our writers have a special fondness. Here are seven shows that are, to us, the greatest.

Alias

So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

The Best Celebrity Halloween Costumes of 2023 (Photos)
Halloween has arrived, and celebrities have gone all out to dress up as other pop cultural icons. The SAG-AFTRA guidelines for Halloween this year advised members to not post photos of costumes inspired by struck work on social media, to choose costumes inspired by generalized Halloween tropes or to dress up as characters from non-struck content like cartoons or other animated TV shows.

“SAG-AFTRA issued Halloween guidance in response to questions from content creators and members about how to support the strike during this festive season. This was meant to help them avoid promoting struck work, and it is the latest in a series of guidelines we have issued,” the guild said in a statement.

But not all actors complied.

Megan Fox did dress up as Gogo Yubari from “Kill Bill” with boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly, and she tagged SAG-AFTRA in her Instagram post. Other celebrities have found more creative...

Talk Show Halloween Costumes: Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, More Musicians Inspire Looks on Multiple Shows
Image
Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and other music stars served as major sources of inspiration behind the Halloween costumes displayed on morning and daytime talk shows this year.

Three shows featured hosts dressing up as Swift, with Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, Live‘s Kelly Ripa and The Talk‘s Amanda Kloots all dressing as the superstar singer-songwriter, with the latter two also passing out friendship bracelets in an ode to Swift’s hit Eras tour.

Live With Kelly and Mark took the Swift inspiration one step further, dubbing their annual Halloween extravaganza The Eras Show as they looked back through different decades of pop culture and of Live‘s own onscreen Halloween celebrations. While Ripa and Consuelos kicked things off with their take on the Barbie movie, they doled out friendship bracelets in an homage to Swift and spoke about the Eras tour inspiration for their show.

Ripa even suggested, despite her...

Quiz Lady Review | Game Show Comedy Gets Moderate Laughs
Image
A frumpy accountant and her rambunctious older sister compete on a popular game show to cover their mother's massive gambling debt. Quiz Lady works as a congenial fusion of disparate characters, wacky encounters, sight gags, and clever jabs at Asian racial stereotypes. Stars Awkwafina and Sandra Oh tickle funny bones and warm hearts as stalwart opposites who find common ground. The film does suffer from pacing issues when the humor runs thin to accommodate a predictable narrative. There's obviously a sprinkle of filler material to cross the finish line. Solid cast chemistry overcomes this flaw to a certain degree.

In 1996 Pittsburgh, Anne Yum (Jodi Hou) watches Can't Stop the Quiz while her parents argue. She guesses every answer correctly. Her teenaged sister Jenny (Shirley Chen) is too self-obsessed to notice anything. She ignores her new pug puppy, who dutifully sits beside Anne on the couch. They watch as her father angrily storms out.

Bob Ross’ First Ever TV Painting ‘A Walk in the Woods’ on Sale for $9.8M
Image
If you fancy getting your hands on Bob Ross‘ first-ever TV painting, you’re in luck. Well, that’s if you have a cool $9.8 million to spare. “A Walk in the Woods,” the oil painting that Ross created in 1983 on the first episode of his iconic art program The Joy of Painting, is currently listed on the Modern Artifact website for $9.85 million by gallery owner Ryan Nelson. “What this piece represents is the people’s artist,” Nelson told ABC News. “This isn’t an institution that’s telling you that Bob Ross is great. It’s not some high-brow gallery telling you that Bob Ross is great. This is the masses, the population in the world, that are saying that Bob Ross is great.” Ross, who passed away in 1995, hosted The Joy of Painting on PBS from 1983 to 1994. He became hugely popular from his easy-to-follow instructional videos and his iconic permed hair.

Lips Like Sugar is set as a coming-of-age crime thriller that takes place back in 1984, during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. Loosely based on a true story, the premise initially follows the lives of two young teenage girls from completely different lifestyles against the cultural backdrop of the punk and skate worlds of West L.A. However, while the rest of the city...

Jason Sudeikis Reveals Owen Wilson's Devastating 'Compliment'
Image
Jason Sudeikis recalls Owen Wilson's "compliment" about his eating habits on the set of Hall Pass.

The lead star of Ted Lasso recently appeared on an episode of Hot Ones, where he discussed his time working on the 2011 comedy film. According to Sudeikis, his co-star Wilson stated, "Gosh, you'll just put anything in your body, huh?" after he continued to eat chicken wings while filming a scene. Wilson then added, "I'm so curious what you'd look like if you actually worked out and took care of yourself." Sudeikis laughed while telling the story, with the host of the interview, Sean Evans, doing the same.

The scene in question featured the characters eating chicken wings at a sports bar. Both Evans and Sudeikis explained that it's a common practice on film sets to avoid eating when the camera is not focused on you.

The film — a romantic comedy directed by Kat Coiro from a screenplay by John Rogers, Tami Sagher, and Harper Dill — was finally simultaneously released in theaters and on the Peacock streaming service in February 2022, making it the perfect Valentine's Day movie.

Marry Me follows Kat Valdez (Lopez), a singer who is set to marry the love of her life and frequent on-stage partner, Bastian (Maluma). However, when she realizes he’s been cheating on her on their wedding day, Kat gets spontaneous and chooses to marry Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson), picking him from the crowd during her concert. This TikToker Is the Bob Ross of Horny Arm Wrestling

Etienne Waite was not aware that his arm wrestling videos, in which he gently whispers instructions to beefy men, were inspiring thirst.

“Pull backwards, that’s too much rotating…good, good,” he coos in a video that went viral on Twitter this week, shared by Twitter user @simonefiii. “You’re really strong.”

Twitter users questioned if the video was meant to be “erotic” or “foreplay,” but to Waite, that’s not the goal. Waite, who is known as the “Arm Wrestling Whisperer,...

Jenna Ortega and Ghostface Chia Pets Are Being Released This Halloween Season
Image
Gizmo. Predator. Slimer. Dustin from “Stranger Things.” These are just a few popular characters that have been turned into official Chia Pets in recent years, and more are coming soon.

This Halloween season, Neca will be turning Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams from Netflix series “Wednesday” and Ghostface from Scream into Chia Pets!

The handmade decorative planters promise full growth in 1-2 weeks, with the “Wednesday” Chia Pet depicting Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams looking down at a spooky black and green plant. The Ghostface planter is particularly interesting, as the plant you grow atop his head is intended to form his iconic black hood – it looks more like a Bob Ross hairdo, however.

Thing from the “Wednesday” series gets his own Chia Pet as well, seen below.

You can pre-order all three Chia Pets from Entertainment Earth today.

Expect them in October 2023.

The post Jenna Ortega and Ghostface Chia...

Stephen Root On Basking In Owen Wilson's Calm During Paint
Image
Paint, starring Owen Wilson, is an independent comedy that pulls inspiration from Bob Ross' persona to create a soft-spoken darling of public access named Carl Nargle. The story, written and directed by Brit McAdams in his feature film debut, gets going when PBS Burlington hires a hip and talented young artist named Ambrosia (Ciara Renée) in a move that essentially pushes Carl out of his top dog spot at the station.

In his quest to remain relevant, Carl starts to lose his grip on the things that made the women around him fall in love. But in the process, Paint sees him remember the woman who started it all: his first love and producer Katherine. Stephen Root (Get Out) plays station manager Tony, whose love for Carl cannot outweigh the needs of PBS in the face of flagging ratings.

A Better Bob Ross Movie Than Paint Already Exists
Image
Warning!: Contains Spoilers for Paint. In Paint, Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, a Bob Ross-inspired host of a public access painting show, but a better Bob Ross movie already exists. Using his penchant for playing protagonists with laid-back personal philosophies, Wilson portrays Carl as an artist hoping to inspire viewers at home to express themselves, regardless of talent, but his method of instruction, using dulcet tones to calmly walk them through painting Mt. Mansfield repeatedly, is seen as old-fashioned by the channel that's made him a local Vermont celebrity. Eventually, a younger, more innovative artist (Ciara Renée) is brought in to revamp the show and Carl has to rethink his purpose in life.

Some might find Owen Wilson's new movie insulting to Bob Ross because, at one point, it chooses to focus on the darker side of Ross' persona via Carl, which involved the painting host being...

Wow, Is Owen Wilson’s Paint Really That Bad? 7 Reasons Its Reviews Are Tanking
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for the movie Paint.Owen Wilson stars in the new "fictional" comedy Paint, which follows a Vermont TV personality called Carl Nargle (Wilson), but while it has all the makings to be a classic, the movie has been slammed by critics. The comedy is heavily based on Bob Ross and how he becomes the inspirational and loveable host of the local show The Joy of Painting. It's an odd look at the painter, as it's weirdly whimsical but laid back simultaneously, just like Ross's painting lessons. And though the character/real-life person's life is as interesting as their art, the movie mostly fails to depict that.

The movie has a lot of competition at the box office, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and another exaggerated biopic, Air, have been released in the same week, but Paint likely doesn't have a chance regardless. The movie...

‘Joyland’ Rocks Film Forum In Solid Arthouse Weekend – Specialty Box Office
Image
Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Cannes Jury Prize Winner and Independent Spirit international film winner Joyland led New York’s Film Forum to one of its biggest opening weekends for a foreign language film in nearly a decade, taking in north of $21k on one screen, the distributor said. Buoyed by strong reviews and strategic marketing, the film by Saim Sadiq sold out nine showtimes, with the theater adding additional shows.

The first Pakistani film to officially compete at Cannes it screened in Un Certain Regard winning the Jury Prize then playing at TIFF, Sundance and New Directors/New Films. It is still banned in much of Pakistan due to themes of queerness and inclusiveness. Expands to LA on April 21, then to top 50 markets and beyond.

It was a decent weekend for specialty and arthouse fare with some solid openings amid lots of competition, including from wide-release adult fare like Air. That relatively speaking,...

Owen Wilson’s Rotten Tomatoes Is Shockingly Bad (& His New Movie Makes It Worse)
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Paint.Though he's appeared in popular movies like Wedding Crashers and Shanghai Noon, Owen Wilson has a shockingly bad Rotten Tomatoes score, and his new movie Paint has only dragged down his average. Once a darling of the early '00s, Wilson was often called upon to play laid-back, laissez-faire types in movies like You, Me, and Dupree and Zoolander, often partnering up with other comedic actors like Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller to balance their chaotic energy. In the '10s movies like Hall Pass, Marmaduke, and Drillbit Taylor made audiences wary of a persona that, after repeated exposure, had worn out its welcome.

In Paint, Wilson plays a Bob Ross-esque public access host who shows viewers all over Vermont how to paint nature scenes, encouraging them to explore their wildest artistic endeavors even if they don't have much in the way of talent.

Owen Wilson’s New Movie Is An Insult To Bob Ross
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Paint.Even though he's known for playing laid-back characters, Owen Wilson's new movie Paint is an insult to Bob Ross, the soothing host of broadcasts on public access television in which he calmly instructed viewers how to paint at home. Wilson plays Carl Nargle, a Bob Ross-esque painter who has been hosting his own show since the mid-'90s (Ross's own show ended in 1995) and is having trouble accepting that his method of instruction is dying out. Through a series of personal and professional setbacks, he must recapture his reason for living, and the purpose of spreading joy through communal artistic endeavors.

Carl is a local treasure in Vermont, and Wilson imbues him with likable eccentricity and quirkiness even as Paint shifts erratically in tone. It's not hard to empathize with his identity crisis when a new painter (Ciara Renée) is brought in...

Paint Review: Owen Wilson-Led Dramedy Is Awkward & Cringeworthy
Image
Paint may have its heart in the right place, but it’s difficult to discern exactly what writer-director Brit McAdams intended with the film. It has something to say about the media’s treatment of someone based on their age and profitability, being replaced by someone younger, and how going through the motions is ultimately detrimental to the creativity of a painter. Unfortunately, Paint is tonally inconsistent, neither sweet nor funny, and lacking direction. It’s less of an homage to Bob Ross than it is a mess of a film that struggles to find its footing despite a stellar cast.

Paint follows Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), an acclaimed painter who has had his own show on PBS for decades. With a pipe in hand and a very chill vibe, which can come across as cavalier to some, Carl paints from scratch every episode. After decades of being on-air, Carl...

Paint Cast & Character Guide
Image
The 2023 independent comedy Paint stars Owen Wilson surrounded by a hilarious cast of characters played by some well-known comic talents as well as new faces. Paint follows Carl Nargle, a fictional TV personality who has the soft speech, bouncy hair, and careful brush strokes of television icon Bob Ross but none of his gregariousness and modesty. Carl’s dominance of PBS Burlington is challenged when a younger, more talented artist is hired to come on after his time slot. Suddenly faced with the fact that he’s no longer the top dog of the station or even of his own office, Carl has to figure out how to remain relevant.

Television director Brit McAdams (Tosh.0) helms his first theatrical feature with Paint. The movie follows a modern story about an overconfident man who suddenly realizes that the world is changing around him, and he’s being left behind. Despite the modern setting,...

Owen Wilson, Impeccably Permed, Channels Vermont PBS Host Bob Ross In Comedy ‘Paint’ – Specialty Preview
Image
Owen Wilson is back, with brushes, as the longtime host of a beloved but fading Burlington, Vermont-based PBS instructional art show. Paint from IFC Films opens Friday on 800-plus screens.

Public television is always ripe for parody and happens to be a world Wilson knows. His father Robert Wilson helped launch, and ran, Dallas PBS station Kera. (He also introduced Monty Python’s Flying Circus to public television.)

Paint director Brit McAdams tells Deadline said that his own after-school TV ritual, General Hospital, would often segue into PBS host Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting. Ross is a loose inspiration for Wilson’s character, Carl Nargle, in the look at least, from permed hair, denim-on-denim wardrobe and dulcet tones that impressed McAdams and a global fan base.

“I’d be like, ‘Who is this guy?’ And then he’d paint something brown that would turn into a branch, and then a tree,...

Paint: Owen Wilson talks taking Bob Ross art classes and transforming with the signature afro
Image
The inspiration for Owen Wilson’s character in his new movie, Paint, is pretty on the nose (no Owen Wilson pun intended). The real-life artist figure Bob Ross, who had a popular art show on PBS in the 70s, had gained a newer pop culture status in recent years after fans reminisced about his unshakably calm and happy demeanor while showcasing his effortless talent at making amazing landscape paintings. What is equally iconic is his retro fashion that, even though it’s a look that never progressed beyond the 70s, has now become just as synonymous with this fascinating man.

In Entertainment Weekly, Wilson talks about taking up the Bob Ross persona. He actually has personal connections to the painter as his father was a TV executive who worked at a PBS station in his native city of Dallas in the 70s. “I remember, as a kid, my mom taking...

‘Paint’ Review: Owen Wilson Is a Womanizing Wannabe Bob Ross in This Bizarre Comedy
Image
Channel-surfing may be a nostalgic pastime these days, but those who experienced the mindless boredom of finding “nothing on TV” will probably recall the most compellingly boring show ever: “The Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. With his signature curly brown afro and soothing voice, Ross was a fixture on PBS and of many a rainy afternoon. Though new episodes stopped airing in 1994, the late painter reached sustained notoriety through international reruns, Twitch streams, a Netflix deal, and a YouTube channel. In 2021, Netflix released a documentary about his life, “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.”

A new fictional film plays on Ross’ pop culture icon status without using his name or any particular details of his life, instead trading on his distinctive look and the public television painting show setting. Written and directed by Brit McAdams (“Tosh.0”), “Paint” stars Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a revered painter with a...

Posterized April 2023: Human Flowers of Flesh, Showing Up, How to Blow Up a Pipeline & More
Image
It’s a busy April this year. One less Friday than last month, but the exact same number of posters to sift through. Yes, having films release the Wednesday before Easter helps add to the total, but only two titles are taking advantage: Air (April 5) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (April 5). And with only one other wide release following them a couple days later, the numbers even out anyway.

It goes to show just how much real estate Disney demands whenever they have a new debut. Everyone else must wait for a month without one to push and shove their way onto screens while they can. Supply and demand—even if the struggle these days seems to be more about the theaters deciding which to show than audiences deciding which to see.

Where to Watch and Stream 'Paint': Find Showtimes
Image
When it comes to harmless, wholesome, and relaxing entertainment, you can't get much better than Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting. On paper, the concept behind the beloved painter's show really should not have worked. Thirty minutes of some guy in afro painting trees and mountains? Who would possibly watch that? Turns out, a lot of people, as audiences everywhere in the U.S. instantly fell in love with The Joy of Painting. Not necessarily because there was a fervent desire for televised painting tutorials, but because Bob Ross was just an infectiously likable presence, constantly encouraging self-acceptance and positivity during the show's decade-long run.

‘Paint’ Is a Bad SNL Sketch of Owen Wilson Doing Bob Ross
Image
Let’s be clear about one thing: Owen Wilson is not playing Bob Ross. He’s just a guy named Carl Nargle, who hosts a popular PBS painting show called Paint with Carl Nargle, filmed in a small American town — Burlington, Vt., not Muncie, In. — that has made him a celebrity. The fact that he has a luscious perm, just like the Joy of Painting creator? Totally a coincidence. And that his program is little more than him instructing viewers how to paint pictureseque landscapes of tranquil lakes and friendly trees,...
