[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 12, “The Bakra.”]
Unrequited, Requited Love
Following last week’s reunion, Claire and Jamie finally made it to Jamaica in once piece in Sunday night’s episode, where lush lands and plenty of potential danger awaited them, thanks to the Porpoise and its young captain who was still intent on arresting Jamie for murder. The couple had larger things to worry about, though, namely finding Ian and rescuing him from a life of slavery. Little did Claire and Jamie know that their nephew had other things to worry about, namely the one they called The Bakra and her penchant for young boys. We knew, though, thanks to a clever narrative switch at the beginning of the episode, which showed us Ian’s point of view throughout the whole ordeal.
However, thanks to a few more coincidental run-ins and a newly acquired slave, it didn’t take long for Claire and Jamie to learn the truth of the situation,...

Unrequited Love
With Frank gone and Brianna embracing the truth about her real father, the hunt for Jamie was on in full force in 1968 Scotland. With a little help from Roger, they tracked Jamie all the way to Ardsmuir, where they promptly lost him. Meanwhile, in 1756 England the story picked up with the Helwater clan welcoming Jamie into their folds as a stablehand, with some receptions a little warmer than others. Indeed, one such reception completely altered Jamie’s life yet again with even more heartache.
Despite the different eras, at this point in the narrative it’s clear that both Jamie and Claire still hold that torch for each other, but that they’re also feeling the impossibility and weight of their separation. As far as Claire knows Jamie may as well be dead, whereas Jamie rarely speaks of his former wife because there’s no point in driving himself mad.

As much as we appreciate Outlander‘s devotion to Diana Gabaldon’s novels, we’re really Ok with the decision to part with the source material in this week’s episode.

We don't talk enough about time, pacing, and chronology in television — probably because most TV shows make the same, standard choices when it comes to time in their storytelling. Outlander, as a time travel show, is one of the few exceptions, playing with not only its characters' perceptions of time, but also its viewers'.
This has never been more apparent than in the Season 3 premiere, which told its story in two separate timelines, set centuries apart, paced in wildly different ways. While Jamie's premiere storyline takes place over the course of a few days, Claire's takes place over the course of months. They are tied together not by any setting, character, or subject,...

Unrequited Love
At its heart, Diana Gabaldon’s saga is a tale of romance about how love conquers all: war, continents, and even time travel. Viewers have caught on with their own passionate and often outspoken love for Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall/Fraser. And that makes a third season, marked by the lovers having been separated for nearly two decades, a tricky thing. Rather than picking up where the second season left off — with Claire, her daughter Brianna, and historian Roger tracking down the presumed dead Jamie through the history books — “Outlander” returned to the period just after Jamie and Claire’s separation to dig into some of that lost time. With 20 years to cover, there’s certainly a lot of story to incorporate, but the more writers fall down that rabbit hole the longer they separate the couple people are waiting to see. That makes this season a hard,...

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t watched Sunday’s season premiere of “Outlander.”) “Outlander” is a show that’s never been afraid to reinvent itself, Season 3 has brought some cosmic shifts to the Starz drama, including one surprising death in Sunday’s premiere. The episode opens on Jamie lying on the battlefield after the the Jacobites’ defeat at the Battle of Culloden. He’s barely alive, concealed from British soldiers by a lifeless body laying on top of him — the body of Black Jack Randall. That the show’s biggest villain dies so early on in the season may be surprising,...

Anyone else feel like you've been having trouble breathing for the past hour? Tonight's Outlander premiere was all about breathing, in a way. Jamie's (Sam Heughan) labored breaths opened the season as he struggled to survive after Culloden, lying on the ground and recalling his death match with none other than Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). Eventually, we all came to realize that Jamie had been lying there for hours, with a dead Black Jack on top of him. Jamie seemed dead too, but he was eventually found and saved by Rupert (Grant O'Rourke), who had amassed a small group of survivors in a little house. But they didn't get so survive long, because the English found them and...

One very important character literally comes to life in Outlander‘s Season 3 premiere, while two others blink out of existence thanks to the Battle of Culloden and its bloody, near*-merciless aftermath.

The “droughtlander” has lasted for over a year, but at long last Starz’s epic time-traveling drama is returning on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. Et for its third season. Diehard fans of the books may already have a general idea of events that will happen, since this season is based on Diana Gabaldon’s “Voyager,” the third book in the series. Some of the information gathered from interviews and official Starz materials below, however, will offer clues as to when they will happen, without any major spoilers of course.
Here’s what you need to know before tuning in on Sunday:

Of the shows currently on the air, none have blended period drama, passionate romance, sweeping battle sequences, and some of the most explicit (and explicitly feminist) sex scenes on television like Starz’s “Outlander” — a potent combination that has helped create a rabid fanbase.

Tired of voting yet? Too bad! Today's categories honor TV's best villains (the bad guys) over the past year, along with TV's best guest stars (the stars who showed up for just a few episodes). We have no jokes or clever ideas about how to put those two categories together, but who reads this paragraph anyway? You're all just scrolling right down to the polls, no matter how much work we put into these openers. Anyway, last year's best villain was Tobias Menzies as Outlander's Black Jack Randall, and the best guest star was obviously Alycia Debnam-Carey as Lexa on The 100. Ronald D. Moore envisioned a season of premium television, broken into one-hour segments, as soon as he read Diana Gabaldon’s first book in the historical fantasy romance series “Outlander.” It’s how his mind works. He saw the world, respected Gabaldon’s attention to research and detail — and her ability to write a bodice-ripping romance (more than 25 million copies sold worldwide) that’s packed with unexpected plots twists. Having worked in the “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica” universes, Moore knows how to create a grounded, immersive world with engaging characters who carry you through the narrative. (Eight Season One episodes are on available on Netflix.) “Outlander” may be a fantasy, but it’s believable. And sexy as hell.
We spoke as “Outlander” Season 2 was unspooling on Starz, leaving behind the rugged Scottish highlands for Jacobean intrigue in Versailles. “It was great to do something fresh and completely different,” Moore said.

Aaahhhh! That's how we feel after the end of tonight's Outlander, which ended on quite the cliffhanger. Jamie (Sam Heughan) was under arrest, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) was possibly in the midst of a miscarriage, and Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) was lying on the grass, possibly dying after being Stabbed In The Penis. That last part deserves all caps because Oh Man. If Randall's not dead, his chances of having kids certainly are (which is...intriguing). Despite Claire's best attempts to get Black Jack out of the way and Jamie out of the mood to kill the guy, the two ended up in a duel anyway, and it was brutal. They were fairly evenly matched, right up until Jamie rammed his sword right into...

He's baa-aack… Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) has returned to Outlander, and he brought with him a whole bunch of new complications. Jamie, of course, wants to kill the man who raped and tortured him for days on end, and is understandably delighted at the process of doing so. Claire, on the other hand, is determined to keep both her husbands alive and existing, and for Frank to exist, Randall just can't die until he has a kid to continue his line. That also plays into another upsetting part of tonight's episode, which involves poor Mary Hawkins. Now that, according to society at the time, her reputation has been ruined forever after she was raped, she hopes to be free to marry Alex...

Miss last week’s episode? Want a quick reminder? Check out our recap.
It takes a poisoning, a spilled secret and some unfortunately placed hickies, but Outlander‘s Claire and Jamie are once more in accord — and just in time, thank the gods.
That’s because the Frasers will have to marshal all of their combined resources to combat the growing threat that is Le Comte St. Germain, who makes not one but two (we suspect) deadly plays for Lady Broch Tuarach in this week’s episode. More importantly, who wants an Outlander where Jamie and Claire aren’t shagging on the regular?...

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you have not watched Saturday’s episode of “Outlander”) Black Jack Randall’s fate is finally revealed to Jamie Fraser, and his reaction is surprising, to say the least. After spending an episode worrying about how Jamie (Sam Heughan) will react, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) finally told her husband that his tormentor was still alive. Instead of reacting with rage or terror, as she expected, Jamie came to life in a burst of exuberance. He thought Randall (Tobias Menzies) was dead, but this has given him a new purpose in life — to seek revenge.

Tonight's Outlander finally gave us what we want: close ups of horrible wounds! Just kidding. While we did get that, and about a million other things we've got to discuss, we also got a much needed reunion between Claire and Jamie in the sexual sense, and it was about time. So far this season, the Frasers had truly been struggling. Their new roles in Paris were weighing on each of them, and Jamie was also consumed by the trauma he suffered last season at the hands of Black Jack Randall. Strangely enough, it was learning that Randall was still alive that freed Jamie, because it meant there was a chance for him to kill Randall himself and personally, physically kill the images that he can't get...

Poor, poor Mary Hawkins. In tonight's episode of Outlander, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) finally realized why Louise's young friend's name is so familiar to her, and it was not a happy realization. In 1746, Mary (Rosie Day) would marry Jack Randall, and would continue the Randall family line that eventually leads to Frank. As if that fate weren't sad enough, Claire connected the dots just after learning that Mary didn't even understand what sex was or why anyone would ever partake in such an activity. While the idea of this future/past/present marriage is truly disturbing, Claire had to put it out of her mind for most of the episode as she struggled with whether or not to tell Jamie (Sam Heughan) that...

Medicine was a little bit different in 1700s France. In this exclusive clip from this week's episode of Outlander, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) has a new job, and she puts her healing skills to use by diagnosing a woman with "sugar sickness," which seriously impresses her new friend and mentor, Mother Hildegarde (Frances de la Tour). "I have never seen a woman who knew the science of urinoscopy," Mother Hildegarde says in awe (or in as much awe as Mother Hildegarde can muster). Watch the clip above! This week's episode of Outlander, "Usefeul Occupations and Deceptions," finds Claire struggling with both her new knowledge that Black Jack Randall is still...

As fully as Claire adapted to the customs and sing-song traditions of the Scottish Highlanders in Outlander’s first season, her immersion into becoming a “lady of such distinction” in 1746 Paris is a little less complete. As she, Jamie and Murtagh execute the first leg of their plan to thwart the Jacobite Rebellion in its infancy at the salacious court of King James, the trio find themselves in varying levels of appreciation for the, erm, charms of the French nobility. Meaning, Claire’s a big fan of the decadent fashions (which include actual fans, by the way), while Jamie could take it or leave any of it, and Murtagh wants to cut off the you-know-whats of anyone and everyone who scoffs at his kilts and swordplay. As though we could possibly forget, we’re reminded once again of the fact that Jamie, an actual rape victim, is still suffering from...

That’s really the only acceptable response to this week’s Outlander, unless your vocabulary and/or heritage means you’ve got a long stream of Gaelic curses handy for the yelling. Because good God, guys: Black Jack Randall is alive.
I don’t say that with surprise; like many of you, I’m familiar with the books and knew this moment was coming even before the first time Randall leered at Claire in the woods. Still, though, the mere idea that Randall lives — and that Jamie may eventually learn of his existence, too — is a juicy...

The Outlander season 2 premiere is beautifully performed, non-stop emotional turmoil...
The first season of Outlander was largely devoted to Scottish Jacobite intrigue, seen through the eyes of the outlander of the title, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a nurse from 1946 who finds herself thrown back two hundred years in time, away from husband Frank (Tobias Menzies) and into the arms of new husband and laird-in-hiding Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). After a particularly nasty entanglement with Frank’s ancestor, Black Jack Randall (also played by Menzies), Jamie and Claire flee to France, at which point the first season ended.
Anyone familiar with Diana Gabaldon’s books, particularly Dragonfly In Amber on which this season is based, will be some way prepared for how this second season opens, but perhaps not ready for how well it is done. It’s forty minutes of nearly non-stop emotional turmoil, beautifully performed by...

“Outlander” took Sam Heughan‘s character Jamie Fraser to some dark places in its first season, but the actor relished the challenge. The brutal sexual assault of Jamie by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) played out in discomfiting detail on screen. It was the season’s darkest scene, by a long shot, but Heughan believes it was necessary and not gratuitous. “We didn’t want to do something that was graphic or hard to watch,” he told TheWrap. “It was about understanding what Jamie’s gone through so we know where he is the rest of the season and subsequent seasons.

In addition to that, executive producer Ronald D. “Outlander” may be best known and beloved as a time-traveling romance, but the Starz adaptation of Diana Gabaldon‘s best-selling series of books went to some very dark places by the conclusion of its first season. Sam Heughan plays Jamie Fraser, the male lead in the series, who romances Caitriona Balfe‘s time-displaced 1940s nurse Claire after she crash lands in 17th Century Scotland. Jamie starts out as a dreamy protector, but by the season finale, he had become a victim of sexual assault and torture at the hands of the cruel Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), and lived to tell the tale.
