Two months after pushing the remainder of his tour to next year due to a medical condition, Bruce Springsteen returned to the concert stage Monday night at New York’s David Geffen Hall as part of the Stand Up For Heroes benefit. He’s played practically every year since the annual event began back in 2007, but he wasn’t on the official bill this year since he originally had a show booked that night in Edmonton, Alberta.

In the past 14 years, Stand Up for Heroes — the annual benefit presented by the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the New York Comedy Festival — has raised $60 million to help veterans, service members and their families overcome whatever hardships they’re facing.
“In the beginning, it was a lot of visible wounds, amputation and burns and traumatic brain injury, like I had,” says Bob Woodruff, who’d been covering the war in Iraq for ABC News when his armored vehicle was hit by a bomb in 2006. “Then we moved toward post-traumatic stress and their invisible wounds. … In the last year and a half, it’s been largely concentrating on the impact of Covid. And we have a lot more depression that has now been triggered by the withdrawal out of Afghanistan. The people served for 20 years and it ended very quickly and unexpectedly.”

Key donors to The Markup, a non-profit technology news website set to launch later this year, said in a statement Wednsday that they intend “to reassess our support” after co-founder and editor-in-chief Julia Angwin said she was “forced out,” and at least five staff writers resigned in protest.
“We remain committed to the mission of The Markup, which is to focus on data-driven journalism covering the ethics and impact of technology on society,” read the statement, credited to six donors and posted to Twitter by Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and the MacArthur Foundation. “At this time we believe it is necessary to reassess our support and we are taking steps to do so.”
Newmark is The Markup’s lead donor, according to Crunchbase. The statement is also attributed to the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Initiative, the Ford Foundation, John S and James L Knight Foundation, and the Open Society Foundations.

Liberal news outlet Mother Jones received a $1 million donation from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, it announced on Monday.
“We’re honored by this gift from Craig,” said Mother Jones CEO Monika Bauerlein in a statement. “This is an investment in the toughest–and most rewarding–kind of journalism, the deep investigative work that is now under attack from all sides. With our growing community of supporters, we can build a newsroom that continues this work for a long time to come.”
Newmark — whose eponymous website has often been criticized by journalists for undermining the advertiser-based business model of local news — has often used his wealth to donate to media organizations and nonprofits through his foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

Craig Newmark gives Fast Company a peek inside the the government's health care system makeover.
Craigslist founder Craig Newmark is optimistic about the health care industry’s 21st-century makeover: mobile electronic health records, remote patient monitoring, and a new corporate culture, friendly to the open-source systems and workplace democracy in which tech innovation thrives.
Years after his low-production classified advertisements websites rocked the media world with its surprising popularity, Newmark has been a highly sought consultant for government agencies eager for their own websites to mimic Craigslist's user-friendliness. "Voices like his make a real difference in creating the culture of transparency, accountability and trust that are essential to implementing the secretary's groundbreaking transformation," the Veteran's Administration's Chief Technology Officer, Peter Levin, told Federal Computer Week.
Inundated with a fresh generation of returning soldiers, the Pentagon and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs saw a need to undergo significant change.

The DC-based startup launched a new feature Monday, which helps you quickly visualize the priciest and cheapest listings in an area.
HotPads.com, a real estate search site, on Monday announced a new feature called HotSpots, a tool that visualizes housing options by relative price. The tool is dynamic, meaning that when you zoom a map in or out, it recalibrates what prices equal "hot" (expensive, in red) or "cool" (cheaper, in blue). HotSpots joins a few other recently added tools to HotPads, including a lasso that helps you narrow your search to the precise areas you're interested in.
HotPads, a five-year-old DC-based startup, is all map-oriented, in contrast to the infamously texty Craigslist. The idea behind HotPads was to "make it visual," HotPads's Paul Gleger tells Fast Company. "Craigslist is just a community bulletin board." Its traffic has been growing steadily--a 260% increase last year, up to 4 million visitors, 2.5 million uniques monthly.

Craigslist.com, like eBay, is the go to place for pack rats, collectors, all things frugal, and…sex traffickers? Actor and producer Ashton Kutcher has called out the virtual marketplace’s founder, Craig Newmark, via Twitter on promoting an illegal business in the black market.
Kutcher tweeted, “Do U have ideas how 2 help Craigslist fight human trafficking? pls send all responses to @craignewmark.”
Kutcher (@aplusk) encouraged his over five million followers to come up with ways that Craigslist.com could do something about trafficking. Kutcher suggested catching traffickers by having them enter their credit card information before they are able to view search results. Kutcher added that Newmark should donate the money made from the illegal business to fund technology that prevents future situations on the website.

Can infographics help generate ideas for government--and make us into better citizens?
That dizzying infographic you see above isn't some interaction designer's master's thesis. It's actually on the U.S. State Department's Web site: Opinion Space, launched on Monday, attempts to gather up thousands of people's opinions on foreign policy, graph them relative to each other, and spur dialogue about the issues.
The infographic was created by Berkeley's Center for New Media, a think tank that's funded in large part by Craigslist. So in essence, the project owes its existence to Craig Newmark, of all people. Talk about Government 2.0.
When you sign on, you're asked to answer five questions, on a sliding scale, ranging from whether global warming is a threat to national security, to whether a country's economic development is tied with women's rights. Finally, you're asked to write your most important idea to share with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

When you sign on, you're asked to answer five questions, on a sliding scale, ranging from whether global warming is a threat to national security, to whether a country's economic development is tied with women's rights. Finally, you're asked to write your most important idea to share with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Is anonymity online coming to an end? The pervasive attitude says yes.
The Pew Research Center teamed up with Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center to survey 895 experts on the future of the Internet--and at the forefront of the discussion is the sticky topic of anonymity. Experts were nearly split down the middle, with 55% agreeing that Internet users will be able to communicate anonymously and 41% agreeing that, by 2020, "anonymous online activity is sharply curtailed." Not only are there divergent opinions on whether online anonymity will be possible in the future, there isn't even a consensus on whether anonymity is universally desirable.
"The routine and pervasive corporate and governmental surveillance, tracking and 'proviling' (profiling) systems that are already much too widespread are certain to continue and expand," says Jim Warren, a tech entrepreneur and activist quoted in the Pew report. "Those who are in positions of power--both corporate and governmental--always want to know ever-more about everyone.

During his presentation today at the Web 2.0 conference, Six Apart cofounder Anil Dash showed a before-they-were-famous photo that included the founders of Twitter, Flickr, and other well-known startups. They've learned plenty of lessons as Web 2.0 companies, he said. "What if we could bring these lessons to bear in service of our country?"
To that end, Dash has established a new non-profit, nonpartisan incubator named Expert Labs that will launch a series of experiments with the goal of bridging government policy and technology. The incubator will give grants to tech gurus to develop applications and tools that benefit both the government and citizens (similar to city-wide open data programs like New York's Big Apps contest, but on a national basis). Dash left blog tool pioneer Six Apart and took the job as head of the D.C.-based Expert Labs in October, and the New York Observer was the first to...

Rembrandt painted The Night Watch between 1640 and 1642. It was commissioned by 16 members of a civic militia guard company who paid 100 guilders each. But while the Rembrandt is famous, the same guard company commissioned seven other artists to paint their portraits around the same period. This made the artist nothing more than a commodity. And it makes Rembrandt's work one of the most famous early examples of sponsored content.
This was on my mind last week as I attended a conference on media convergence organized by The Economist. Executives, marketers, and designers discussed subjects including social media, 2.0, and well, the sponsorship of content. Here are some highlights.
Craig Newmark, chairman of Craigslist, said, "Trust is the new black." Not surprisingly, personalization is his take on 2.0. He also said Leonard Cohen is his rabbi.
Bonita Coleman Stewart of Google sort of said the same thing--everything's going local. For marketers it's about quantitative measurement,...

The Demo Pit at the annual TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco is filled with eager startups gunning for their shot at stardom. Most of the companies are forgettable, but every so often one catches our attention. Muutu, a company based in Vancouver, is one such startup.
Muutu is, according to representatives in the Demo Pit, kind of like eBay for classified ads. The site aggregates ads from Craigslist, newspaper classifieds, and various other online classifieds into a streamlined interface that allows users to save favorites, share good finds with friends, and rate ads by quality. Eventually, Muutu will add in its own payment system and give users the chance to become verified. In other words, Muutu has many of the basic features that Craigslist should have, but doesn't.
//
Muutu is still in its infancy--it just launched this morning--but if it takes off, the site has the potential to become a Craigslist competitor.

When I’m trying to find something to do on summer nights aside from being alone and reading My So-Called Life fanfiction completely bored by going out with my extensive, awesome, and numerous social circles, I often take a respite from the known, real world and venture into one that’s more digital, anonymous and classified. Craigslist, after all, is kinda like Ellis Island, except instead of immigrants, it’s a beacon that beckons the the tired, the poor, the procrastinating/sexually curious/apartment-hunting online masses yearning for casual encounters and Salvation Army strata furniture. But while I thought Craig Newmark’s classifieds were just good for perusing while putting off work, discovering new living situations, testing explicit acronyms, and making Nsa play dates fun of the people who go on the site to try to make Nsa play dates, enterprising individuals without a steady pay check use the site to earn a living,...

Allow me to explain.
I had been invited -- along with other dozens of other media people and assorted socialites -- to the ex-Viacom chief’s Upper East Side townhouse by Arianna Huffington to celebrate the publication of her book, “On Becoming Fearless.”
It was a muggy, early fall evening in late September 2006. There were plenty of boldfaced New York media names already there. Dan Abrams, David Zinczenko, Eve Ensler, Barry Diller, Craig Newmark, Naomi Wolf. All important ...

Craig Newmark has a new gig: As well as working on his famously successful Craigslist, he's dabbling in philanthropy. But since he doesn't have Bill Gates' piles of cash, he's using a different asset--his voice.
Newmark's just published "A Personal Call to Service" in The Huffington Post. It's straightforward, to say the least. "Like most humans, I'd like to save the world, but I figure I need a nap. So, I figured it'd be much easier to talk you into doing it, by talking up the efforts of people who are really effective at helping others," is how he starts the article.
Newmark goes on to note that being a nerd he usually likes to get things done, versus merely talking about them, but that people he would like to help really need him to be a promotional "talker abouter." It's an interesting stance, but it makes sense when you look at Newmark's history.

Fiercely independent (and famously altruistic) online classified service Craigslist announced it will remove its "erotic services" category from its U.S. website next week after receiving increased pressure from law enforcement agencies. It is replacing it with a new "adult services" category where listings must be manually approved by Craigslist staffers. In Nov. 2008, Craigslist and the attorney generals of over 40 States struck a deal to implement new screening policies requiring telephone and credit card verification before users were allowed to post erotic services listings. But things came to head for Craig Newmark and his small staff after the alleged murder of a masseuse by a Bu medical student - who police say was found through her Craigslist ad. CEO Jim Buckmaster pointed to research that Craigslist classifieds are associated with far lower rates of violent crime than traditional print ads in blog posting explaining the decision.

Cost, access, quality -- the prognosis for American health care may look grim, but innovation is the cure. The medicine of tomorrow is being born today.
In March, President Obama identified "the biggest threat to our nation's balance sheet." Not major banks on the brink of insolvency. Not paralyzed credit markets. Not a bailout tab in the trillions. The biggest threat, he warned, "by a wide margin," is "the skyrocketing price of health care."
Health care accounts for $1 in every $6 spent in the United States -- and costs are climbing at twice the rate of inflation. Every year, an estimated 1.5 million families lose their homes because of medical bills. Although we have the world's most expensive health-care system, 24 countries have a longer life expectancy and 34 have a lower infant-mortality rate, according to the latest United Nations report.
But some physicians and surgeons have been quietly rethinking and reinventing medicine for the 21st century.

Naughty Naughty ... Online classified service Craigslist reached an agreement with 40 state attorneys general to curb its "erotic services" listings, long used for local prostitution services. Clients using the category must now pay a fee using a valid credit card as well as provide Craigslist with a working phone number. The site promises to share this information with law enforcement when subpoenaed. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has often taken the moral high ground regarding his text-only site, now used by 40 million Americans each month. This initiative will be no exception. The company promises to donate all revenues from these ads to charity.
