The podcast-to-tv boom continues with HBO adapting the third season of Serial as a limited series.
The network is developing the remake with rising writer/director Shola Amoo and exec produced by Lebron James and former HBO exec Kary Antholis.
The third season of the award-winning podcast, which arguably set in motion the current boom for non-fiction audio series, was set in the Cleveland justice system. Unlike the first two seasons, which featured one case, it looked at the system overall with focuses on cases before the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas such as a woman who accidentally hits a police officer after being assaulted in a bar and a young African American man who is assaulted by police officers for being in possession of marijuana.

Searchlight is developing a feature film centered on Muhammad Ali’s refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army in 1967 during the Vietnam War, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on Leigh Montville’s “Sting Like a Bee: Muhammad Ali vs. The United States of America.” The book centers on the cultural and political implications of Ali’s refusal of service in the military on the basis of his Islamic beliefs. It also shows the key moments in a life in exile from the ring as he risks losing everything — his boxing license, his career, even his freedom as he’s forced to take a stand in a battle for racial equality.
“The Last Tree” director Shola Amoo has been signed to direct the film from a script by Phillip Howze, whose credits include Netflix’s “Mindhunter” and “The Eddy.” Alix Madigan (Amazon’s “The Lie”) is producing.

Former stuntman turned actor Ric Roman Waugh has just been given the green light to put together a biopic on famed daredevil Evel Knievel. Based off of Leigh Montville.s The High-Flying Life Of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil and Legend, it.ll follow the motorcycle rider.s entire life from his working class upbringing to the peaks of his stardom and back down to his shaky final years. On New Year.s Eve 1967, Evel Knievel attempted to jump a motorcycle over the fountain at Caesar.s Palace. He failed, fell into a coma and awoke twenty-seven days later a superstar. Over the next decade and a half, Knievel attempted more jumps for more money, but more than the jumps themselves, he sold the American public on himself. He was an outlaw, the last gladiator in a society increasingly gone soft. By the mid-70s, Robert Craig Knievel was...

Evel Knievel's hair-raising life is to be turned into a biopic by a former stuntman.
Ric Roman Waugh became a movie set thrill-seeker after worshipping Knievel as a child and now the Felon writer/director has been given the chance to tell his hero's life story on the big screen.
He'll adapt Leigh Montville's book The High-Flying Life of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil and Legend.
Waugh tells The Hollywood Reporter, "This is my Walk The Line (acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic). It's less about the stunts and more about an exploration of a man who let nothing stand in the way of his quest for fame and glory - including his own mortality."
No casting details had been announced as WENN went to press.

Legendary Pictures has locked a deal to collaborate with the estate of Jackie Robinson and his widow Rachel on a feature biopic about the African-American Brooklyn Dodgers second baseman who broke Major League Baseball's color line reports Deadline.
Robinson's ability made him a Hall of Famer in the spot, more importantly his quiet determination allowed him to ignore the taunts and threats of racist fans and fellow ballplayers, opening the door for other black stars who followed him.
Brian Helgeland will write the script and direct the film while Thomas Tull will produce and both Dick Cook and Jon Jashni will serve as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute.
Speaking of legends, Exclusive Media Group is moving forward on a biopic about legendary stuntman Evel Knievel and has hired Ric Roman Waugh ("Felon") to direct says Risky Biz Blog.

With his red, white, and blue jumpsuit, hell-raising antics, and legacy of crash-and-burn stunts that more often than not resulted in fireballs, broken bones, and extended stays in the ICU, Evel Knievel was the kind of larger-than-life American icon whose life was tailor-made for the big screen. Well, the latest word out of Tinseltown is that stuntman-turned-writer/director Ric Roman Waugh has optioned Leigh Montville’s recent bio The High-Flying Life of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil, and Legend and plans to turn it into a film — a film which I hope has as little in common with 1977′s atrocious Viva Knievel!

The story of Evel Knievel is a perfect fit for the big screen: motorcycle stunts as a teenager, death-defying leaps over buses and cars as an adult, a Caesar's Palace crash in 1967 that left him in a coma for 29 days and a return to form one year later where he continued to jump until his retirement in 1980 -- and writer-director Ric Roman Waugh plans on capturing it all in a new biopic on the iconic figure.
Waugh, a former stuntman who worked on films including 'Days of Thunder' and 'Lethal Weapon 2,' is currently negotiating to adapt Leigh Montville's book, 'The High-Flying Life of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil, and Legend' as the basis for the film.
Hit the jump to see Waugh's thoughts on the movie and who he has in mind for the iconic role.

It's been about three and a half years since Evel Knievel died, and you all know what that means: Biopic Time! Exclusive Media Group will be developing a movie based on Leigh Montville's book, The High-Flying Life of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil and Legend, most likely taking a look at the extraordinary lengths Knievel went to entertain us, and the heavy toll - physical, mental and emotional - it took on him, before a transcendent final stunt in slow motion. Just a hunch.
Because they're looking for authenticity, or someone at Exclusive Media Group is just a big Howard the Duck fan, the company has brought on former stuntman Ric Roman Waugh to both write and direct the film. While we dig the kitschy 70s appeal of Evel Knievel as much as anybody else, we know in our heart of hearts that there will only ever be...

Evel Knievel biopic may be directed and written by Ric Roman Waugh, based on Leigh Montville's book called The High-Flying Life of Evel Knievel: American Showman, Daredevil, and Legend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waugh is in negotiations to writer as well as direct the film based on the work published by Random House in April. He makes the perfect man for the job as his father Freddy Waugh was one of the founders of Stunts Unlimited in the 1970s. Waugh said that this was his Walk the Line, and stated "Instead of concerts and songs, you’re doing a daredevil guy. But it’s less about the stunts and more about an exploration of a man who let nothing stand in the way of his quest for fame and glory — including his own mortality. What I love about Evel Knievel is I get to do an homage.
