Following the conclusion of “Severance” Season 2, Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette will portray Maggie Murdaugh in the upcoming Hulu series “Murdaugh Murders.” For Arquette, it’s a story that’s “always” been fascinating.
“To be married to someone who turns out to basically be a malignant narcissist is so interesting to me,” Arquette told Variety at the “Severance” Season 2 FYC event on Saturday in Los Angeles. “The way they have this kind of enchanted life together and how completely destroyed everything got. It was such a sad, rotten American tale.”
The series is based on the reporting of journalist Mandy Matney, creator of the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast, and will revolve around the powerful Murdaugh family that became accused of fraud and murder. Arquette’s character, Maggie Murdaugh, was found dead along with her son, Paul Murdaugh, in 2021. While playing a character like Maggie who is no longer alive proves a great challenge,...

After churning out countless movies that claimed to be inspired by true events without any real-life references backing up these claims, Lifetime has finally gotten its hands on the infamous murder trial that ruined the legacy of the Murdaugh family. Alex Murdaugh’s rap sheet, however, is too vast to be contained within the span of two movies, one following the events leading up to the murders, and the next staying close to the investigation and the trial. Despite Bill Pullman pulling his weight as the wicked Alex Murdaugh, the narrative style and pacing in Murdaugh Murders aren’t nearly steady enough to hold the gigantic mess he had made of his life. What the two films do pull off is still managing to manipulate your speculations, even though what you’re watching is, for the most part, what actually happened.

If you're sitting down to watch Lifetime's Murdaugh Murders: The Movie, chances are you're already familiar with the case and the man at the center of it: disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh. In the years since the double homicide of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, Alex's wife and son, the case has dominated the public's attention, with millions tuning in to the early 2023 murder trial (Alex was convicted and sentenced to two life terms) and the many documentaries about the family's web of lies and corruption. While these projects have connected the dots between the murders, Paul's involvement in the 2019 boat crash that killed Mallory Beach, and the suspicious deaths of housekeeper Gloria Satterfield and Stephen Smith, they've been primarily concerned with the more salacious aspects of the case, including Alex's suicide-for-hire plot and abuse of prescription drugs.

Rebecca Hill's daughter was almost selected as a juror in Alex Murdaugh's trial but was ultimately passed on. Curtis Smith, known as Cousin Eddie, claims that Alex Murdaugh confessed the murders to him, stating that Alex wanted to be shot because he believed he would be implicated in the deaths of Maggie and Paul. Alex Murdaugh's alibi, Shelly Smith, disproved his claims during the trial, testifying that he spent less time at his parents' house on the night of the murders than he had initially stated.

Netflix sure owes a lot to horrific crimes being committed. The streaming service has had massive hits with such true crime documentaries as the truly harrowing "American Murder: The Family Next Door," "The Staircase," and the original Netflix crime doc phenomenon "Making a Murderer." Lawsuits filed over the fatal 2019 boat crash caused by the son of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh have been settled.
In February 2019, Paul Murdaugh crashed his family boat into the Archers Creek Bridge in Beaufort, South Carolina. Mallory Beach and several other teenagers were on board at the time. Beach, 19, was thrown into the water and killed as a result.
But while Paul was facing trial in relation to the deadly crash in the summer of 2021, Alex killed him and his mother, Margaret. Prosecutors claim that Alex murdered his family to avoid responsibility for the financial crimes he had previously committed. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Alex was the owner of the boat and was thus the target of legal action over the crash. A trial was scheduled to begin in the coming months, but all lawsuits were settled on July 16. These lawsuits were brought by the four...

In 2019, 19-year-old Mallory Beach died in a boating accident in Beaufort County, South Carolina when authorities said Paul Murdaugh had been at the wheel. This week, Beach’s family and crash survivors have reached a $15 million-dollar settlement with Parker’s Kitchen, the convenience store that sold alcohol to an underage Murdaugh the night he drove the boat, The New York Times reported.
“The Beach family believes this settlement will serve as a warning to all the Parker’s of the world, who might make an illegal sale of alcohol to a minor,...

Trying to get people on camera to talk about the titular family for “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” was a tough thing to accomplish for executive producer Michael Gasparro. “It was terribly difficult to get people. This is a small community. We had a really hard time talking to people. It’s Hampton, South Carolina. They were scared and I think that people are still scared,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries (watch the exclusive video interview above).
But fear about the family wasn’t the only reason the crew had a hard time talking to people. “There’s also multiple documentaries, so it was very competitive and it was an ongoing story, which is also really difficult since you’re not taking a story from the past and telling it today.”

The saga behind Netflix’s Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal was a monster to take on, with added pressure on the filmmakers as details unfolded in real time while they were in production. Directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, the doc series chronicles the powerful and wealthy Murdaugh family in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and several criminal investigations into unsolved deaths surrounding the family — culminating in the trial and sentencing of former lawyer Alex Murdaugh for the 2021 murder of his wife and son. Investigators say the same son, Paul, caused a boating accident in 2019 that killed his friend Mallory Beach.
Furthermore, the documentary was released before Murdaugh was sentenced on March 2. Willoughby Nason says the story is far from over, given that the investigations into the family are still active.

This story about “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” first appeared in The Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The trial of Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina former lawyer now convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul, captivated true-crime audiences in real-time as it played out in early 2023, with no less than four documentary series popping up in the last few months, all looking to unravel how a prominent Southern family could fall from grace in such a brutal fashion. Among them is Netflix’s “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” a three-part documentary series that opted to orient its story not with the 2021 double-murder, but rather with a mysterious boat accident that took place two years earlier.
“Looking at the story as a whole, the more you started getting into it, the crazier it got,” executive producer and showrunner Michael Gasparro said. “Every time, the boat...

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (Sled) confirmed Tuesday that they are now treating the 2015 death of South Carolina teen Stephen Smith as a homicide following new information that arose during their investigation of the murders of Margaret and Paul Murdaugh.
Smith was found dead on a Hampton County road in July 2015, his death initially ruled the result of blunt force trauma from a hit-and-run accident. However, subsequent reporting and documentaries into now-former South Carolina lawyer and legal dynasty scion Alex Murdaugh reexamined what was long-rumored about Smith’s death:...

The sentencing of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife and son is unlikely to end the public’s fascination with the family: There are already TV specials, docuseries and podcasts about the slayings and at least two scripted shows on the way.
Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison on Friday after being convicted a day earlier of killing his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, and their youngest son, Paul. He was found guilty on all charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon in the commitment of a violent crime.
In June 2021, Maggie and Paul were found shot to death on the family’s estate in Colleton County, South Carolina. But the prominent family’s legacy began unraveling years earlier when questions arose following the death of Mallory Beach in a boating accident involving Paul, the unsolved 2015 death...

Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son on Thursday, marking the conclusion of a six-week trial that has gripped the nation.
According to The New York Times, a jury in Colleton County, S.C., declared that Murdaugh, a formerly well-respected lawyer in the Lowcountry region of the state, had killed Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh on June 7, 2021. The jury also found him guilty on two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The verdict was unanimous, and the jurors made their decision in less than three hours.
The case reached national attention when Netflix released a docuseries, “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” on Feb. 22. Directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, the doc has been a mainstay in Netflix’s most-watched TV shows since its release, bolstered by the fact that Murdaugh’s trial was unfolding at the same time.

Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to wait until a case is all wrapped up before giving it the true crime docuseries treatment. Some cases are so explosive, however, that documentarians just can’t wait to get their cameras on it. Such are the circumstances with the story of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh.
In fact, even though the trial of Alex Murdaugh is ongoing and fresh revelations about his crimes are being uncovered almost daily, one could argue that Netflix is getting into the Murdaugh game late with its three-episode series, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. Many media entities have already tried their hand at explaining this shifty saga of murder, corruption, and cover-up from HBO Max’s Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty to ID’s The Murdaugh Murders: Deadly Dynasty.
By waiting just a little bit longer than its peers, Netflix hopes that it can present the...

Directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason were never short on angles through which to investigate the crimes, casualties and collusions of the powerful Murdaugh family of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
The most obvious one would have been to tell the story through Alex Murdaugh, a former solicitor who’s currently on trial for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Thanks to dozens of live feeds on YouTube, the ongoing courtroom drama has emerged as the trial of the year.
But once they were on the ground in the Lowcountry, the directors behind Netflix’s new docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” were told there was only one place to start –– the 2019 boat crash that had killed Mallory Beach.
“I think what people don’t understand is that had there not been a boat crash years prior, and had Mallory Beach not died the way she did...

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal is a docseries directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason.
Five bodies in six years and all related to the Murdaughs, one of the most powerful families of South Carolina and which brought to us by Netflix in this new “true-crime” that is well constructed and executed with precision, managing to do what it sets out to do.
About the Series
Lots of people criticise true-crime products as sensationalistic, in search of cheap thrills and which are basically documentaries that like to poke a finger in the wound, to dig in with the morbid spectator, morbidity of crime itself.
Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal is this precisely.
Yet it is very well done and uses all the arsenal of a very morbid, fanciful and incredible story.
Very well told, nonetheless, and which also has all the elements to attract fans of this genre: a story that producers enjoy,...
