Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are known for their wide-ranging and incisive celebrity interviews with everyone from former President Barack Obama and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Season 4 guests such as Michelle Yeoh and Denzel Washington. For even a seasoned journalist, sitting down opposite those bold-faced names could be cause for intimidation or apprehension. But the hosts of Showtime’s “Desus & Mero” are anything but cautious.
“We meet people that other people completely lose it talking to, and we’re just like, ‘Hey, you used to be the president, Obama, has was that?’” Desus tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “We’re on the same level as these people and that comes through in the conversation. We’re never going to be like, ‘So, oh my God, this is so great, Denzel.’ It’s going to be like, ‘Okay, Denzel, you’re in Hollywood, we’re in Hollywood.

Mike Francesa, a pioneering figure in sports talk radio and host for 30-plus years on Wfan, said Friday will be his last regularly scheduled broadcast on the New York station.
Francesa, who made his acting debut as Adam Sandler’s bookie in Uncut Gems, plans to continue making occasional appearances on the station but will discontinue “Mike’s On.”
Although he has been a solo host for more that a decade, Francesa is best remembered by listeners for his longtime teaming with Chris “Mad Dog” Russo. “Mike and the Mad Dog” perfected the nascent format of drive-time sports talk, with the hosts sparring and picking apart games for a steadily growing audience. The pair were profiled in an installment of ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary franchise. Russo now hosts a daily show on SiriusXM and one on TV’s Mlb Network.

Donald Trump is a president made for a time when Americans can no longer embrace one another. It is a strange coincidence that the most divisive and conspicuously bigoted president in decades will be known most for a lethal pandemic that separates us by fiat, preventing physical community in order to help us all survive. The coronavirus has effectively extended our winters, mandating that we be at home as much as possible. Surely some are reading and exercising more, but few things are more American than defraying anxiety with some easily disposable television.

We’ve known for years that Adam Sandler was a quality actor. Performances in films like Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me, alongside Men, Women, & Children and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), have showcased his dramatic abilities. Now, we have his finest performance yet in Uncut Gems, a role perfectly tailored to his sometimes abrasive energy. Nothing Sandler has done will prepare you for this. The movie is kinetic and riveting, boosted by the Sandman delivering work that deserves every single bit of acclaim this awards season. Opening this week, the flick is a must see, with Sandler turning in acting that should be rewarded in a just world with an Oscar nomination. The film is a drama (or somewhat of a dramedy) with crime thriller elements, centered on one New York City jeweler in the Diamond District, and in particular how he just can’t leave well enough alone.

Adam Sandler portrays an erratic and obsessive New York jeweler turned gambling conman in the first trailer for A24’s “Uncut Gems,” a high-paced thriller from the Safdie brothers.
The new footage follows Howard Ratner (Sandler) in Manhattan’s diamond district, acquiring a rare Ethiopian opal which then-nba Celtics player Kevin Garnett (playing himself) shows interest in. The basketball star borrows the stone as a good-luck charm, and believing in the gem’s power, Ratner bets on the subsequent Celtics game, a high-risk move.
“I made a crazy risk, a gamble, and it’s about to pay off,” Ratner says.
Ratner begins to face the backlash of his gambling, and those affiliated with him demand their money back after he uses it to place bets. It leads to dangerous situations where Ratner even yells, seemingly to his wife, Dinah (Idina Menzel), to “get the kids out of the house.” Later in the trailer,...

Adam Sandler’s starring role in his new feature film is no laughing matter. On Tuesday, A24 released the trailer for upcoming drama “Uncut Gems,” which hails from the Safdie Brothers.
Due out in December, the dark film also stars former NBA Champion Kevin Garnett as a version of himself, as well as Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox and Eric Bogosian.
Hell, even Wfan sports talk radio host Mike Francesa is in this movie, but that one is a fictional role.

After naming Good Time the best film of 2017, expectations were sky-high for the Safdies’ follow-up Uncut Gems and it looks to have delivered the goods. Craig Carton, a figure of some New York renown who used to host a popular morning show on Wfan and CBS Sports Network, was sentenced to 42 months in prison by a federal judge Friday for perpetrating a massive ticket fraud.
Facing millions in gambling debts, which he blamed on an addiction to betting, Carton took part in a scheme that defrauded ticket buyers of $7 million. Prosecutors had recommended a prison term of five to seven years, while Carton pushed for leniency and no prison time. According to a Law360 report from the courtroom, Carton told U.

There’s been a global outpouring of sadness in the last few days since the death of comic book icon Stan Lee, but Jimmy Kimmel acknowledged the one demographic that’s been especially hard-hit by the news: people who dress up as Marvel superheroes.
Kimmel, on his show on Tuesday night, said “no one felt this loss more than the men and women that dress up as superheroes outside our studios on Hollywood Boulevard.”
He then cut to a quick cut of a local news station interviewing wannabe Marvel stars on the streets. “It’s really sad,” a man dressed up as Captain America said. Another man, dressed as Spider-Man, was even more emotional, saying: “My dad is died, my dad is dead.”

I’m not saying I’m not going to do anything ever again. What I’m saying is, that part of my life, at the end of ’17, that is ending.” His departure will mark the end of a 30-year run with Wfan,...

Although Avengers: Age of Ultron has been raking in the big bucks at the box office worldwide over the last two weeks, critical reception has been more mixed compared to its predecessor. Some folks think it’s another fine entry for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, others weren’t so fond of it. One of the film’s detractors is radio host Mike Francesa, who recently went into a four-minute tear on how much he disliked the movie. In fact, "dislike" may be too soft of a word to describe his feelings. Check out the rant against Marvel’s latest film below. During an episode of The Mike Francesa Show, the titular host used the platform to express his disappointment with the film, one of whose main heroes is "the green guy," as he called Hulk. Having seen the movie with his two ...

Looking to pursue your own American dream? How To Make It In USA has some tips--albeit poor ones--that can help you on your path. The new web series stars Joe Pera and Conner O'Malley as an unfunny comedian and an out-of-touch agent who banter with each other in the agent's office.
What drives How To Make It In USA is its experienced stars' assured deliveries. Pera, who previously starred in the MTV web series Pancake Breakfast Critic, crafts his character a meek, gutless comic with terrible jokes. O'Malley, who writes for Late Night with Seth Meyers, takes agent Max Gold in the opposite direction. His performance, which ends up halfway between Ari Gold and Mike Francesa, is the best part of How To Make It In USA.
As with many indie web series, How To Make It In USA's characters are fictionalized versions of their respective actors

Wfan radio host Mike Francesa's still got it — and by “it,” we mean a whole bunch of pent-up anger, likely sky-high blood pressure and very viral video potential. The popular New York-based sportstalk radio personality delivered an epic takedown of the New York Jets Monday on his radio show — which is also carried by the Yes Network — following the local football teams bludgeoning by the Buffalo Bills. The Jets dropped to a pathetic 1-7, and Francesa had no patience for General Manager John Indzik's postgame press conference. Kentucky Coach John Calipari Poses as Calipari Fan, Defends Calipari on Mike Francesa's Show (Audio)
University of Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari is known for being a top-notch recruiter and a master motivator of young hardcourt talent. What he's not particularly known for is his in-game coaching, a point that legendary New York sportstalk radio host Mike Francesa hammered home on Wednesday's show. Coach Cal, who was in-studio with Francesa earlier Wednesday, called into the program as listener “John from Kentucky,” complete with a comically bad accent. He quickly gave up the gag to argue with Francesa as himself. What followed was a classic Francesa bitch-fest. Also read: NFL Great Mike Ditka on ‘Stupid’ Washington Redskins Debate:.

When Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy discovered his wife was in labor with their first child on Monday, he did what lots of new fathers do - he took advantage of his employer's paternity leave to be by her side. His decision meant the Major League Baseball player missed opening day on Monday and the second game of the regular season on Wednesday, but apparently that was too much for a handful of sports talk show hosts who slammed Murphy on-air for choosing family over work. "Quite frankly, I would've said, 'C-section before the season starts,' " former NFL quarterback...

When Bill Simmons first became the Boston Sports Guy, writing an obscure blog for AOL in the early days of the internets, he gradually cultivated a loyal audience who appreciated his exhaustive essays dissecting Beantown’s sport fandom while sprinkling in Karate Kid and Road House references. He wrote from a fan’s perspective, which is the only perspective he could afford at the time, but that voice ultimately made him famous and influential. He’s been at Espn now since 2001, and if he doesn’t yet run the network, he certainly is one of the Sports Leaders’ most important assets.

At first glance the New York Football Giants share very little with the fictional team in Dillon, Texas. However, after rewatching the first season this past week, it dawned on me that this year's Giants team is shockingly similar to the Dillon Panthers/Lions. Allow me to recast Friday Night Lights with the players on the Giants:
Eli Manning as Matt Saracen
The goofy facial expressions, the "aw shucks" expressions, the easy-going personality, Matt Saracen is Eli Manning! Eli Manning is Matt Saracen! Both have led their team to a championship when everyone has counted them out. Both have married their school sweethearts. Eli met Abbey at Ole Miss while Matt met Julie Taylor at Dillon High. In a perfect world Eli would have married Coach Coughlin's daughter, but we'll deal with that later.
Tom Coughlin as Coach Taylor

Quick update related to this story about the historic move of Wfan, the sports radio station, to Manhattan after spending 20 years in downright decrepit studios in Queens.
Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who abruptly left Wfan for Sirius over a year ago, was reunited on the air today with his former “Mike & the Mad Dog” show co-host Mike Francesa. It was the first time Russo, who turns 50, has appeared on Wfan since he split.

NEW YORK -- New York-area listeners accustomed to "Imus in the Morning" will wake up today to a pair of familiar voices.
"Mike and the Mad Dog", the sports talk show known to fans in New York, will temporarily fill in for "Imus in the Morning" while WFAN and CBS Radio management decide what they will do in the morning-drive slot that had been home to Don Imus and company for decades.
"Mike and the Mad Dog", hosted by Mike Francesa and Chris Russo, has been the station's afternoon radio call-in show since September 1989. Beginning today, it will air from 6-10 a.m. and then again from 2-6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, after a three-hour meeting with Imus on Friday, the Rutgers team said that it had accepted his apology. And Imus' radiothon to benefit children with cancer and families of sudden infant death syndrome collected $3.4 million on Thursday and Friday.
