Beyoncé has so many audacious culture-clash triumphs all over Cowboy Carter. But one of the most stunning moments is also one of the simplest: her version of the Beatles classic “Blackbird.” Paul McCartney wrote the song in the summer of 1968, inspired by the American civil rights movement. All that history is right there in Beyoncé’s version. She keeps the folkie Paul guitar, complete with the squeaks, but adds her heavenly gospel-soul harmonies. What she does with the word “arise” is incredible in itself.

Beyoncé just made history when she took home the Grammy for best dance/electronic music album for "Renaissance," netting her 32nd Grammy - the most of any artist ever. From the start, Beyoncé's "Renaissance" era has been a celebration of house music, beginning with its lead single, "Break My Soul," which was released in June 2022.
"Break My Soul" features a sample of Robin S.'s house hit "Show Me Love." Before she was sampled on the song, Robin S. was a major hitmaker in the house-music world. Her 1993 track "Show Me Love" was a hit in the early '90s, and her singles "Luv 4 Luv" and "What I Do Best" also topped the charts and helped establish the house genre around the world.

Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer” Netflix series just launched to some impressive premiere numbers, and considering how many people checked out the true crime limited series in its first week, its ’80s and ’90s-infused soundtrack is no doubt of interest.
Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he committed a series of brutal murders, often dismembering his victims and keeping body parts as souvenirs. His crimes horrified the nation and captivated the media.
The Netflix limited series “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” chronicles Dahmer’s childhood and early adulthood, leading up to the first of his murders in 1978. It explores the events that shaped him into a serial killer, and the police investigation that eventually led to his capture. It’s hard to believe that he evaded escape for so long, given the lack of complexity in planning and executing his crimes.

The Season 19 finale of The Voice shouldn’t have been suspenseful. Like, at all. Based on your enthusiastic support of Team Gwen Stefani’s junior achiever Carter Rubin in the polls that have followed our recaps, he had the victory in the bag. A nice one, even, with tissue paper and a bow.
But, as we know all too well, the results of TVLine polls don’t necessarily reflect the preferences of the NBC sing-off’s audience as a whole. We also couldn’t underestimate The Blake Shelton Effect — by which a contestant leapfrogs to the front of the pack...

Storied singer Martha Wash recently unveiled a delightfully seething screed against greed, “Never Enough Money,” set to appear on her upcoming album, Love and Conflict, out January 6th.
The recently released “Never Enough Money” is a stomping, rough-around-the-edges blues rocker anchored by a righteous vocal performance from Wash, who skewers reckless and unchecked thirst for wealth and attention. “You think you’re trending now,” she sings, “And everybody’s going ‘Wow!’/ If all you want is more/ Then I’ll show you the door/ You tweet and troll us all...

The Top Uses of C+C Music Factory’s Song ‘Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) in Movies or TV
Released in late 1990, the song Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by C&C Music Factory was an automatic hit. In movies and in TV it’s been seen as one of the more popular songs to play when the moment calls for it. The only trouble was that while Martha Wash sang the actual lyrics, Zelma Harris got the credit for it. This changed when Wash brought forth two lawsuits that had the desired effect of adding a disclaimer to the song that Wash was to be credited for the lyrics and Harris would be credited for the visualization.

It's literally raining cats and dogs in Emily Ratajkowski's world! The 24-year-old model is taking us to the Australian Outback for a bizarre weather report in which she wears just a pair of red and white hot pants with a striped bra as she explains the strange circumstances surrounding the area. From an unexpected snow storm to an "insane apocalypse" following animals escaping from a zoo, Ratajkowski is not exactly the best reporter, but she definitely knows how to make us laugh. The video marks the first installment of Love magazine's new "Weather Girls" series by Sean Frank, and if it's anything like their annual advent calendar, it will surely be a hit. The...

Showtek and Eva Shaw teamed up to release a new collaboration this week on Spinnin’ Records, delivering a deep house anthem called “N2U”. The new track also features distinctive vocals from Grammy nominated singer Martha Wash.
“N2U” opens with massive diva vocals and a groovy deep house organ riff, before drums fill in the mix. Showtek keeps the track melodic and uplifting, with energizing synth leads and upbeat bass lines, while Wash’s vocals feature throughout most of the track. Drawing on a retro, 90’s dance influence, “N2U” never misses a beat, delivering catchy rhythms and irresistible progressions, all delivered with the sheen of modern Edm.
Showtek and Eva Shaw manage to straddle a fine line, bringing their top notch big room productions into a more soulful realm without sacrificing the massive energy demanded on the dance floor. “N2U” is available on Beatport, and fans can...

Thanks to Star-Lord and his Awesome Mixtape No. 1, we now know more than we ever could have imagined about the track “Come and Get Your Love” and the band that brought it into the world.Like Wild Cherry and the Weather Girls, Redbone has for years been one of those groups that tends to pop up at music trivia nights and on listicles about one-hit wonders. But let’s give it up for Redbone, shall we? The band was formed in 1969 by Pat and Lolly Vegas, two brothers of Mexican and Native American descent. The siblings’ original surname,...

In what is becoming a New York tradition, the legacy of Judy Garland will be celebrated with an evening of eclectic performances honoring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) youth.
Now in its third year, "Night of A Thousand Judys" will feature Broadway's Carolee Carmello and Christiane Noll along with Manhattan cabaret stars Justin Vivian Bond and Molly Pope. Also making their "Judy" debut in 2013 are "Glee" Warbler Telly Leung, original Weather Girl Martha Wash and singer Madeleine Peyroux.
Acknowledging that the evening's set will comprise both classic tunes and lesser-known material from the Garland songbook, the participating artists were nonetheless tight-lipped about the specifics of their performances; last year's show featured nods to Garland's seminal 1961 Carnegie Hall concert as well as her starring roles in "Meet Me In St. Louis" and, of course, "The Wizard of Oz." Kimberley Walsh received a perfect score on 'Strictly Come Dancing' last night (08.12.12). The Girls Aloud beauty danced a combination of the cha-cha-cha and the tango to the Weather Girls' 'It's Raining Men' with her partner Pasha Kovalev and was catapulted to the top of the leader board after landing an impressive four 10s from the judges. Bruno Tonioli described it as ''the dance of the season'' and the high score put the couple two points ahead of Dani Harmer and Vincent Simone, whose ''extraordinary'' Charleston/quickstep to Paul Whiteman's 'Happy Feet' was described as ''extraordinary'', scored 38, including their first 10s of...

So it turns out that disco was actually a revolutionary tool that ended the oppression of women and black and gay people in the Us. Who knew?
I like disco as much as the next person, which is to say I like it at night, in moderate helpings, and only when accompanied by spirits. Disco has long been the musical genre to caricature rather than savour, best enjoyed in the background on hazy nights out rather than as a legitimate musical experience. So presented with the opportunity to sit through a two-hour disco documentary at the London film festival, I was a bit circumspect.
But from the first bar of that sour-sweet high-octane disco beat, I was hooked. This is because The Secret Disco Revolution is no ordinary history lesson about the 70s craze. Rather than simply charting the rise and fall of disco to a thumping soundtrack, the film...

How would you compare Amy and Rory's Doctor Who exits to the series ten most depressing companion departures? I may have had problems with how the Weeping Angels were used, but the show definitely delivered the melodrama. Usually you have to kill a dog to get me to react like that. (Why, hello Futurama, hello Revenge.)
NBC is looking to adapt About a Boy into a TV series.
I have to admit, when I heard that Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes was working on a Titanic mini-series, I was hoping he's make it a Downton prequel by making James Crawley one of the characters. Instead, Fellowes says he's writing a prequel novel about the courtship between Robert and Cora.
Character actor Mark Margolis, best known for ringing Tio Salamanca's bell on Breaking Bad has taken a recurring role on American Horror Story.

It doesn't look like Warner Bros. is marketing "Magic Mike" as a rom-com anymore. Producer and star Channing Tatum knows what his audience wants: More male stripping.
The latest trailer for "Magic Mike" features Tatum and his boys -- Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Alex Pettyfer -- stripping to the Weather Girls' classic "It's Raining Men." That's pretty much it.
If you're not one for trailers, just skip to the 44 second mark, when Tatum starts to suggestively hump the floor. Remember Cody Horn? Yeah, neither do we.
Do you have your singles ready? "Magic Mike" hits theaters on June 29; watch the trailer above.

The chance to spend a Sunday morning amidst barechested hunks is just one of the many perks of being Martha Wash.
The 58-year-old Wash and her herd of oiled-up, sinewy stallions have touched down at Manhattan's Eagle Nest Studio, where they will be shot by celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz just in time for the 30th anniversary re-release of "It's Raining Men," the 1982 smash that the dance diva recorded as one half of pop duo The Weather Girls. In the newest photo for Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, the boys are all set for a shower — a rain shower, that is.
While it's disappointing that this newest peek at Mike doesn't show much skin, it does make it clear that the campy qualities of a male review will be well represented in this flick. The fellas are covered nearly head to toe, wearing trench coats and carrying umbrellas, and we have a strong suspicion that a certain Weather Girls song will be playing during this dance number. The goal to keep the vibe of the male strip club authentically cheesy was hinted at when Joe Manganiello revealed in an interview that his character, "Big Dick Richie," had a firefighter persona on stage, while Matt Bomer would dress (and undress) in a doctor's uniform. Perhaps the name of Manganiello's character was a tip off as well. Either way, it's...
A very Happy 36th Birthday to out triple-threat Cheyenne Jackson! Below you can see an interview with Broadway.com from a few months ago in which he answers fan questions.
Condolences to the family of legendary TV producer Sherwood Schwartz, who died today at age 94. Among other shows, he created the iconic Gilligan's Island and Brady Bunch Netflix is furiously spinning it's big price hike as something consumers actually want. Oscar voters may soon be able to cast their ballots online. In related news, hackers are licking their chops. Great news for Syfy as their decision to turn Monday into must-see TV has paid off. Alphas (which I couldn't get into, but may give another shot), scored the best debut on the channel since the premiere of Warehouse 13. Speaking of which, The Season Premieres of Warehouse 13 and Eureka also got off to solid starts. Below you can see...

As we ramp up for the gayest of the award shows this Sunday night (sorry NewNowNext Awards, it’s not even close), we find out that not only will Neil Patrick Harris host, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert perform, they’ll share the stage with Martha Wash for “It’s Raining Men.” Like I said, it's not even close.
Just how much money did the Big Four networks rake in for ad sales based on their upfronts in May? $9.2 billion spent on shows you may or may not watch next fall, up from $8.8 billion.
It turns out women who have excess breast milk can market it for big bucks to women who can’t produce enough, or presumably gay men who can’t produce it at all. One woman made $20,000 selling her breast milk.

Oakland — Just in time for the holiday season, the Gravy has arrived.
Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie opens up in various theaters across America at the start of December. Wavy Gravy is an icon with an ever changing career. He’s gone from the legendary Merry Pranksters to the head of security at the original Woodstock to running a respected charity and finally achieving international greatness as a flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The many facets of his life are covered in the documentary directed by Michelle Esrick.
We had a chance to sit down for an extensive interview with Wavy Gravy and Michelle Esrick when the movie premiered at 2009’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
This first part has him discuss getting drunk with Jack Kerouac (On the Road) and dropping acid at the Electric Acid Kool-Aid Tests. Ahhh good times.

Behold - the powers of a greatly lowered expectation.
I approached the old, scuzzy mega-mall AMC with all the enthusiasm of a prisoner on the Bataan Death March. I forced myself to make entry, found a seat, hung my head, and tried to ignore the fine aromas of old gym socks and urine that always seem to permeate old scuzzy mega-mall theaters such as this one. After the mild distraction of five introductory trailers came and fled the screen, my torturer did arrive; Vampires Suck, surely to be one of the worst films of the year, come to suck out my very soul with nitrate teeth honed like the sharpened edge of baseball bats.

What a week! First of all, if you got caught in the fiasco of the ticketing site for Weird Al last Friday, we’d like to apologize. We greatly underestimated how excited people were about this event, and it sold out in mere minutes, completely destroying the ticket server. We are, however, in talks with Weird Al’s posse about the possibilities of a second show, so sit tight and we’ll give you details as they come!
Lately, it has been crazy gorgeous outside. I guess this is the “nice” weather that comes around once a year. We’re taking advantage of it, this week specifically. We have two outdoor screenings! Tomorrow (Thursday), we’ve partnered with Amoa again to screen Nashville at the beautiful Laguna Gloria! Saturday, Tim and Karrie League are opening their home for a MS150 BeneFeast screening of Triplets Of Belleville!

Red and blue make ... rainbows?
I don't understand why politicians don't understand that videotape exists. They say one thing, and mere months later do the exact opposite, and Jon Stewart wins another Emmy Award for a clip show. Clips shows used to be filler on television, now they're political theater.
When Governor Bob McDonnell was campaigning, we knew he was anti-gay, as was his likely Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. We did however take heart that he would carry forward the tradition of signing a nondiscrimination order that included sexual orientation. Because he said he would. When he didn't, it hurt.
But he and Attorney General Cuccinelli have taken it a step further and are requiring the state's universities that have policies outlawing discrimination to rescind those policies. He's only enforcing the law. And we thought the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing in government. Enter Stewart.

Tyra Sanchez, wielding her hateful attitude, has incited drama several times already on this season of RuPaul's Drag Race, notably in episode 2 when she whined her way through the first group challenge where the queens did burlesque. And "the other Tyra"—as Ru has taken to calling her—certainly delivered on the drama front again last night. She ruffled the other contestants' feathers—well, mostly just Tatianna's—as she hummed-shrieked-sang while putting together her dress for this week's wedding-themed challenge. It's clear the producers or episode editors want us to believe that the Tyra-Tatianna drama was a big diva showdown,...

We can’t wait to watch tonight’s Let’s Dance For Sports Relief second show, last week we laughed so much at Rufus Hound’s Cheryl Cole impression that we almost had a toilet related accident!

Also taking part on the show will be actress and impressionist, Debra Stephenson, TV presenter Richard Arnold dancing with Kate Garraway and Michael Fish dancing with the Weather Girls (Lara Lewington, Clare Nasir, Becky Mantin), presenters Sam and Mark and boxers Carl Froch, Johnny Nelson, Tony Jeffries and Duke McKenzie.
We’ll be liveblogging the whole show tonight, so make you join us here to read our commentary and leave your own remarks about the contestants and the new celebrity judges.
