Welcome to The Top 5, where every week, we list five things for a given topic. These topics can range from "5 Things We Liked About The Power Rangers Teaser Trailer" to "5 Things We Want (Or Don't Want) In Ben Affleck's The Batman."
Of course, because everyone has an opinion, there is sure to be some disagreements, which is why, despite the title "The Top 5," very rarely are these actual "best of" articles. Instead, they're meant to provide entertaining insight, and to stir a discussion, and give everyone a chance to speak their mind.
If you have a suggestion for a Top 5 piece, send them my way via #TheTop5LRM on Twitter. If I choose your topic, I'll be sure to give you a shoutout!
Now, on with today's topic!

Give All Of Your Love To Johnny X!
Ya know what the best part of livin’ the rock n’ roll lifestyle of a rollickin’ reviewer is? No, it isn’t the mountains of cash, the mansions full of lovely ladies, or the non-stop adulation from tens of people. No, fiends, for me the best part is discovering obscure gems of cinematic rad-assness that I can turn you cats and creeps onto! Tim Bergon only wanted to let his wife know he was okay. The California firefighter was relaxing with his crew after battling the Cocos Fire outside San Diego when he snapped a quick selfie for his wife. Bergon's wife showed the photo to her friend Monica Calles, owner of San Diego's Plan 9 Alehouse. Inspired by the heroic exhaustion on display in the image, Calles shared it on the Alehouse's Facebook page, calling the firefighters "#reallifeheroes." "It touched us, so we passed it on," Calles told local news station CBS8. The photo resonated with San Diego residents, who are dealing...

When Harry met Sally concludes with Harry running to tell Sally about her annoying sandwich-ordering habits. Before plowing down zombies on the Walking Dead, Andrew Lincoln attempted to cuckold his newly wedded best friend with cue cards and boom box Christmas carolers in Love Actually.
Apparently this tripe is what passes for romance. What happened to cinema? 70 years ago, romance was Rick telling Ilsa to get out of his dreams and onto a plane, literally minutes before killing someone. Things have gone downhill since Casablanca. The following are some of the more charmingly romantic moments in cinema that don’t resort to sweet nothing’s and smooches….
10. Dracula (1931)
In 1922, legendary German filmmaker F.W. Murnau made Nosferatu, the longest surviving vampire film that was not-so-loosely based on Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Outraged at this copyright infringement, Stoker nearly succeeded in ridding the world of every surviving copy of the film.

Simply put, this was one of the best NCIS Season 10 episodes so far. And it was almost exclusively the Tony show too. So many things to talk about...
In "You Better Watch Out," the team was called in to investigate the death of an unemployed Navy husband, who - as it turns out - had been stockpiling new unreleased $100 bills and running up enormous debts. Only he ended up trying to use a few of them before he was meant to, which turned out to be very bad for his health.
Because the crime involved currency, the Secret Service had to step in, specifically Special Agent Ashley Winter. Though she seems entirely narcissistic (as evidenced by the fact she's clawing her way to the top of her career), I really hope we see her again. In fact, you have to wonder if maybe she might prove to be a good romantic foil for Dinozzo.

In director Peter Jackson’s return to Middle-earth with the dwarf-packed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the voice of New Zealand musician Neil Finn serenades the audiences when its final frame fades to black.
“The story is very much a dwarf tale as much as it is called The Hobbit,” says Finn, who sings “Song of the Lonely Mountain,” the majestic and epic yet intimate and warm ballad of the dwarves that closes out the first film of Jackson’s new trilogy.

The good, the bad, and the blockbusters … whatever you've seen recently, we'd like to hear about it
What films have you seen recently? Whatever you've been watching, we'd like you to tell us about it.
You can either leave a comment in the thread below, or tweet your thoughts with the hashtag #gdnreview. We'll pick the best and show them off here once a week.
Here's what some @guardianfilm followers had to say about recent films they'd seen:
@bexter2001
Damsels in Distress: witty, whimsical and deeply offbeat, it grew on me, mainly thanks to the wonderful Greta Gerwig
@StephWhalley
Sticky sweet & naughty with lashings of humour & a sprinkling of nineties nostalgia: everything an American Pie Reunion should be!
@RedAppleChango
Lockout: Ott action sci-fi. Very 90s vibe, in a good way. See if you like Timecop or Sudden Death (who doesn't?)
@hannah_echo
Drive. Beautiful aesthetics and faux-retro sound juxtaposed...

The 2nd annual PollyGrind assaults Las Vegas during an epic length film festival that runs Oct. 8-17 at Theatre 7 with enough sleaze and violence to make Sin City residents feel right at home.
Actually, the fest does open up on the 7th with a concert at Neon Venus with local acts like Monster Zero, Creepersin and many more.
However, the film portion of the fest opens on the 8th with Stuart Simpson‘s acclaimed Australian gorefest El Monstro Del Mar!, one of the best Russ Meyer/Roger Corman mash-ups with a Down Under twist. Read the Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film review of this gem here.
Other Bad Lit favorites in the lineup are Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s The Taint, which is still completely grossing out audiences on the festival circuit, and The Uh-Oh Show, the splatter-filled horror comedy by the Godfather of Gore himself Herschell Gordon Lewis.

What makes a movie classic? Box office success is usually a big factor in elevating a film’s status, but even that’s no guarantee. The balance sheets on Avatar (2010) may have looked good but for all its technical brilliance, it lacked the special magic that immortalized Gone With the Wind (1939). It is very hard to believe that some of the best films ever made were commercial flops when they were first released. Were they too complex? Were the too arty? Or were they released at the wrong time? The reasons vary but there’s no denying these classics have survived better than many more successful movies of the day.
So what makes a movie classic? I think it has a lot to do with enduring appeal. Some have achieved cult status when released many years later while others were re-discovered after a lengthy period in obscurity. Art-house and underground...

RiffTrax Live! 08/17/11 - Jack The Giant Killer (1962)
A couple of years ago now, I saw one of RiffTrax's one-night-only Live! in-theaters events and had a blast. I assumed the RiffTrax crew (former MST3K alumni Mike Nelson, Bill Corbitt, and Kevin Murphy) would only be able to continue doing public domain titles like they have so far (House On Haunted Hill, Plan 9, Reefer Madness) for all similar future Live! in-theater events, but here they have a total golden-age matinee fantasy adventure classic up next! I absolutely love the monster-filled, visually fantastic, storybook-colored, kooky and spooky George Pal/Harryhausen-esq Jack The Giant Killer (1962), so I'm really looking forward to this one. Feel you there!
Jack The Giant Killer (2012) is actually being remade at the moment by a Public Access/Usual Suspects re-team-up of writer Christopher McQuarrie (Public Access, The Usual Suspects, The Way Of The Gun, The Tourist, Mi:4) and director Bryan Singer (Public Access,...

Chicago – Would I love Ed Wood as much without Tim Burton’s amazing film of the same name? Probably not. I’ll admit that I can’t watch “Bride of the Monster” and Not think of Martin Landau’s Oscar-winning performance and I smile when thinking of Wood directing some of his awesomely-bad features but I’m really picturing Johnny Depp more than the actual filmmaker. Does it matter? For whatever reason you enjoy the king of Z-movie cinema, the 6-disc “Big Box of Wood” set is a treasure for cheesy movie fans.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0
Where does one even begin to review the filmography of Ed Wood? He was a Horrible director. And yet there’s something about his most beloved works (“Plan 9 From Outer Space,” “Bride of the Monster,” “Glen or Glenda” [which is, sadly, not includes in this 13-movie set]) that reflects the overwhelming love for cinema held by their director. Ed Wood loved movies. He...

There was only one Ed Wood. To call the man different is a bit of an understatement. One thing is for sure though ... for better or worse, Ed has become a legend, and a new box set is on the way that celebrates the very best (and worst) from the world's most infamous filmmaker.
From the Press Release
Ed Wood was an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author, and editor who often performed many of these functions simultaneously. In the 1950s, Wood made a number of cheap genre films (and attempted a number of failed TV pilots), now enjoyed for their technical errors, unsophisticated special effects, large amounts of ill-fitting stock footage, idiosyncratic dialogue, eccentric casts and outlandish plot elements, although his flair for showmanship gave his projects at least a modicum of critical success.
Wood's popularity waned soon after his biggest "name" star, Bela Lugosi, died. He was able...

Seriously, that’s not a typo. And it’s not the first time we’ve reported on a Plan 9 from Outer Space remake (here).
Filmmaker John Johnson and Darkstone Entertainment will starting filming the remake March 25th, and The Roanoke Times asked him why, which is a very good question, when someone is about to remake the worst film ever.
The source claims: “He didn’t start out with a grand plan to remake “Plan 9.” While on the set of a different movie, Johnson was griping about Hollywood’s penchant to crank out bad remakes of well-regarded horror films. Someone asked him what film he’d like to see remade. His answer was Plan 9 from Outer Space. He sent an email to his friends in film circles sharing this thought, not meaning it as a serious commitment.
The email got forwarded. News items appeared in venues such...

Most of you would probably scoff at the very idea of remaking Ed Wood's all-time bad movie classic Plan 9 from Outer Space. That's because all you of Earth are idiots. You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!

This isn't the first time we've told you about filmmaker John Johnson and Darkstone Entertainment's plan to remake what is widely hailed as the worst movie ever made, but now it is becoming a reality.

For many fans, independent horror filmmaking seems like a relatively new concept. So you may be surprised to find out the maverick spirit that fuels our beloved genre has been burning for almost 100 years now, since the 1912 version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was produced by the independently-run production house Thanhouser Company.
Since then, we’ve enjoyed countless films that bucked the studio system tradition and gave us bold, refreshing explorations of some of our greatest fears and introduced us to some pioneers in the entertainment industry. In honor of these achievements, we here at Dread Central are taking the entire month of March to celebrate all things indie horror.
To kick things off, over the next five days we’d like to take you on a historical journey through the last 100 years of indie horror by taking a look at 25 milestones that helped define the horror genre and, in many cases,...

One of the greatest worst movies ever made, "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," comes out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow (you can also rent it from Netflix). In commemoration of this historic day, here is my feature on the film's New York City premiere in March of 2010.
A few minutes past midnight on Friday, a man in a gray suit and bright red tie took to the stage of the IFC Center's Theater One and, to the applause of the sold-out audience, proudly waved a wire coat hanger in the air like an athlete brandishing the Olympic torch. This borderline deranged behavior would only draw an enthusiastic positive response at two places: a Joan Crawford impersonators' convention or the New York City premiere of "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," a eco-horror romantic thriller that has been dubbed "the next hilariously great cult movie" by no less an appropriate outlet than Vulture.com.

The women of CineBoobs found a really fun website. Not to mention a useful one, too, if you're a film student -- I know I would have milked this thing dry if it had been around back when I was in grad school. It's the Film School Thesis Statement Generator and it couldn't be any simpler. Type in the name of a film like, say, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and the Fstsg spits out a paper topic:
I picked "Plan 9" because I actually did write a grad school paper about "Plan 9" in which I interrogated the meaning and underpinnings of camp viewership. It was a good essay but I like the Fstsg's version even better. The narrative is completely masked in "Plan 9" but what little remains is almost entirely about the loss of utopia that Ed Wood predicts as the ultimate result of the Cold War arms race.

The Room is different from other bad movies. Anybody who has seen it knows this. Its success is so potent, and the film is so rewatchable and addictive because it resides in an exclusive liminal space between the token wonderfully bad genre movies (e.g., Plan 9, Hobgolbins, Troll 2, and everything in between) and infuriatingly incompetent beyond-amateur crap like Manos: The Hands of Fate or Birdemic. The Room is so incredibly unique in part because, at a $6 million investment from the enigmatic Tommy Wiseau that covered everything from production to advertising, this is bad filmmaking on a relatively “large” scale. With The Room, Wiseau found himself in the impossible position of being able to – as the film’s sole source of funding – exercise total creative control while simultaneously displaying unwieldy incompetence regarding the entire filmmaking process. I don’t mean to use such emphatic rhetoric lightly, for as Tom Bissell appropriately puts in his analysis of...

No! Nobody ever made them like this! I mean the architect had to be a certified genius or an authentic wacko!" -- Dr. Ray Stanz, "Ghostbusters"
You'd have to be a certified genius, or maybe an authentic wacko, to make a movie poorly on purpose. But that's what Larry Blamire did when he made "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" in 2001. He paid homage to the legendarily bad films of Edward D. Wood Jr. by mimicking their style and tone, from the horrific screenplay ("As a scientist I just wish I could appreciate more things like cabins...") to the equally atrocious acting ("Even when I was a child, I was hated by skeletons!") to the super low grade special effects. (Know why the alien spaceship looks like it was made out of a toilet paper roll? Because it was made out of a toilet paper roll.)

People say Troll 2 is the worst film ever made—or Battlefield Earth. These people have very limited experience in cinema, I think. If these two films are the worst ever made, what is the barometer for badness? If Battlefield Earth is the worst film ever made, then it must be the ability to completely forget a film after seeing it. If it’s Troll 2, it must be a bit of the hype surrounding it. I mean, the film does have a documentary about its badness and the career of its star. Or are all these people wrong, and is the worst film of all time Plan 9 From Outer Space? Hey man, there is some magic to Plan 9—despite its undeniable awfulness. What about The Room? Cool kids will revel in the absolute stupidity that is Tommy Wiseau’s first feature film.
I pose these very important questions because,...

You can't call yourself a movie buff if you haven't seen Ed Wood's infamous “worst movie ever made" Plan 9 from Outer Space. Everybody has at least heard of Ed Wood, right? Well he made some um, movies and his Plan 9 From Outerspace is one of them and it's considered to be the worst movie ever made. The movie even won an award for being the worst movie, it won the prestigious "Golden Turkey Award"! so the 3D version will be seen in select cities later this summer thanks to 3D conversion company PassmoreLab. You know some even say this is kind of the first zombie flick!

Some say the 3-D movie fad has gone too far. I can’t bring myself to agree, as long as there are projects like this to be had: 1959′s Plan 9 from Outer Space, cult auteur Ed Wood’s infamous “worst movie ever,” is being converted to a full-color 3-D version. It might even screen in theaters.
Why is this great news? Because if ever a movie deserved to be doused in 3-D cheese, it’s Plan 9. Just imagine that wooden acting and those cheap-o effects in three vivid dimensions and a rainbow of colors. Plan 9′s unintentional...

San Diego-based 3D production and conversion studio PassmoreLab has some big plans. The company is about to take the Ed Wood, Jr. zombie "classic" Plan 9 From Outer Space, which was colorized a couple of years ago, and convert it to 3D. We don't know whether to laugh, cry, or consider this the most awesome undertaking in the world. Be sure to sound off in our comments section.
From the Press Release
The film, also known as the "worst movie ever made" due to its numerous continuity and production gaffes, has become an iconic sci-fi cult classic due largely to its reputation for being so bad. It was christened "worst movie" back in 1980 by Harry and Michael Medved in their book The Golden Turkey Awards, when they claimed to have found the "holy Grail" of bad movies. Since then, the movie has become very popular.

Is Plan 9 from Outer Space really the worst movie ever made? It's nice to have one movie to point to as the anti-Citizen Kane, but I've seen a lot of movies I would put below Plan 9. It's stupid, it's poorly made, and it's not any good, but at least it had the spirit of a movie that wanted to be enjoyable, cobbled together by people who just couldn't wait to make another film. So just its optimism alone should count for something.
Now Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s cult classic has a chance to find a brand new cult, and I can't believe it took this long. MarketSaw, the best place for everything three dimensional on the web, reports that PassmoreLab is converting Plan 9 from Outer Space into stereoscopic 3-D. Take that, Last Airbender! Apparently, all the camp details will remain in tact; it's just going...

Horror remakes are definitely the hot new trend in Hollywood and I had no idea just how many remakes were being planned until I sat down and drew up a list of as many as I could find. I stopped at 7 pages and needless to say it seems that just about every movie you can imagine is getting a remake-prequel or reboot into 3D.
Here is a pretty complete list of upcoming horror remakes as of today in alphabetical order. Note: There are a few on this list that are only in the early phases of discussion and in some cases I included franchise reboots as well.
13 Tzameti: Starting the list off 13 Tzameti is more thriller then horror but still worthy of making the list. The film which started filming in New York awhile back will star Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. The original film is a tale of Russian roulette with gruesome outcomes.

Our friends at Fright Rags have did it once again. Limited to just 200 shirts they've stepped up their game to bring us a tribute to the awful"ly" good B horror/sci-fi film known as Plan 9. For those of you that haven't seen the movie it's so bad it's good. It's been dubbed the "worst movie ever made" though its following has reached cult status over the years...

A few minutes past midnight on Friday, a man in a gray suit and bright red tie took to the stage of the IFC Center's Theater One and, to the applause of the sold-out audience, proudly waved a wire coat hanger in the air like an athlete brandishing the Olympic torch. This borderline deranged behavior would only draw an enthusiastic positive response at two places: a Joan Crawford impersonators' convention or the New York City premiere of "Birdemic: Shock and Terror," a eco-horror romantic thriller that has been dubbed "the next hilariously great cult movie" by no less an appropriate outlet than New York magazine's Vulture blog.
The hanger-wielding man in the suit was "Birdemic" writer/director James Nguyen, a software salesman by day who boasted that he "went to the film school of Hitchcock cinema" during the introductory Q & A. Arguably, he also could've attended the film school of Edward D. Wood Jr. cinema,...

I have no life and I work a weird shift, so unless 85 Flood is playing somewhere, I'm usually home at midnight on Saturdays.
I know it's a terrible TV night ("SNL"? Is That still on?) but occasionally I take the remote for a spin anyway and a few months ago stumbled upon "The It's Alive! Show," on a near-public-access station out of Pittsburgh that usually tries to sell me stuff I don't need.
It's an extremely-no-frills monster movie show, of the kind that everyone seemed to have when I was growing up (as long as everyone lived in Pittsburgh or Cleveland). Somewhere around midnight there'd be a low-low-budget monster movie interspersed with alleged comedy vignettes by the host and a motley crew of sidekicks and buxom babes.
In Pittsburgh, this guygave 20 years to hosting "Chiller Theater" and doing other newscasting and host jobs, plus the occasional bit part in movies...

America’s favorite movie hecklers are back for their second live event. This August the Rifftrax crew of Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (formally of Mystery Science Theatre 3000) performed a hilarious send up of the Ed Wood Classic Plan 9 From Outer Space to a live audience from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville Tennessee and hundreds of theatres across the country. Now they’re back, bringing that same hilarity to a series of Christmas shorts, just in time for the holidays. I recently had the chance to speak with Michael from Rifftrax about the group’s second live show.
Where will you be riffing from this time?
We are from Escindido which is close to us here in San Diego it’s a center for the performing arts.
Why short films instead of one full length film?
People really love the shorts. We put them out...

In the last few weeks, you may have seen ominous "For Humans Only" posters adorning bus stops and benches in your city, or "Non-Humans Seen In The Vicinity" signs plastered at your local cineplex. They're all part of the viral marketing campaign for Neill Blomkamp's science-fiction opus District 9, which hits theaters today. And while D-9 is shaping up to be one of the highest-rated flicks of the year, it's worth remembering that this summer marks the 50th anniversary of the release of one of the worst movies (sci-fi or otherwise) ever made: the legendarily awful Plan 9 From Outer Space. The terrible script, slapdash special effects, and uniformly stilted acting has made it a cult classic, not least of all because it was horror-meister Bela Lugosi's final film role.
These two movies are more alike than just having a "9" in their titles. Both use science-fiction to examine the human condition,...
