The viewing public learned of CSI: Vegas's end on April 19.
Its cancellation by CBS really shouldn't have come as a shock. Its middling ratings have made it a bubble show throughout its entire run.
CSI: Vegas had every opportunity to thrive. It first aired in 2021, amid a wistful revival craze as a nation coming out of a pandemic sought comfort viewing.
In that first season, odd couple Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) returned to break a conspiracy smearing the former crime lab's reputation.
At the same time, this generation's CSI lab, led by Maxine Roby (Paula Newsome), solved new cases like the former criminologists that viewers had loved for 16 seasons, only with newer, fancier gadgets to do the work.
Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows has fit seamlessly with the current squad over the past two seasons.
Like a legacy at any institution, the series was given time to find its way.

Well, that was one predictable conclusion.
The final fate was reached for criminologist Josh Folsom on CSI: Vegas Season 3 Episode 3.
Unsurprisingly, Josh is still working for the Las Vegas crime lab.
That's no shock. Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights) is arguably the biggest name among the new cast members.
In a strike-shortened season, discarding such a character would make no sense, unless the actor involved has decided to bail out on the series.
So, it was evident that Folsom would come out the other side of the review board. The question to be determined was in what shape he would emerge.
Throughout this whole Jeannette storyline, Josh has been his own worst enemy.
Gone was the meticulous CSI admired by his teammates. In his place was a scared little boy from the wrong side of the tracks, standing up for his mother, who wouldn't help herself.

The episode undoubtedly had several twists and turns that sent the series off in new directions.
CSI: Vegas Season 3 Episode 2 also served as a spotlight episode for Catherine.
That's always something to be celebrated by the returning viewers, who want to see that one O.G. character out in front.
Even better, it focused on a case that managed to be both cold and new simultaneously.
It was capably set up with Catherine reciting her "white whale case" to Maxine.
It certainly made sense that, with Catherine's long connection to the lab, she would have that one case that's haunted her.
How convenient was it that it too involved Rafael Tarquenio, the drug lord suspected of being behind Jeannette's murder?
Well, it definitely figures that Tarquenio would have some hand in any number of open cases, so why not explore that?
And, with Folsom so recently going off the rails,...

Josh Folsom may have been cleared, but ...
A very talented criminologist's career remained in the balance at the conclusion of CSI: Vegas Season 3 Episode 1.
Josh brought this situation on himself, being at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person.
It wasn't like Folsom didn't already have enough strikes against him.
He is a native of the wrong side of Vegas. He grew as a CSI the hard way, absorbing like a sponge what his coworkers had to offer, especially his mentor, Maxine.
Frankly, he's the only one at the Las Vegas lab who didn't come off like a science nerd. You could see Josh enjoying a beer at any bar along the Strip.
Could that happen with Allie or even Penny? That's not very likely.
Serena has that down-to-earth quality as well. It's little wonder that Folsom ended up with her instead of Allie.
Josh chose family over his lover,...

The moment Folsom dreaded finally occurred.
But that didn't mean Josh handled Jeannette's murder well on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 21.
After seeing a track mark on her arm on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 19, he feared the worst and tracked tailing her. Seeing her seemingly working with a drug dealer on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 20 only magnified his concern.
But Jeannette didn't overdose as Folsom had feared. Instead, she apparently was skimming some of the heroin she was helping to smuggle.
And, not surprisingly, these weren't people with whom an addict should be messing. Who are they most likely to blame first when product comes up missing?
What was heartbreaking was the context given to Josh and Jeannette's relationship through the flashbacks to those days when his grandfather was dying from brain cancer.
The message was that, regardless of how she ended up, Jeannette was a caring mother when Folsom was growing up.

The new day shift supervisor was something of a surprise.
Folsom and Allie were up for that promotion, which served as a distraction as the team sought the killer of a TV weathercaster on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 20.
How ridiculous was it that Max thought she could make this decision secretly without it becoming the talk of the lab?
Instead, Chris was making book on it, with the result of the squad placing bets on who would be promoted.
So, no pressure on Josh and Allie as they worked to solve the first murder case in a week in Clark County.
The murder of a small-channel TV forecaster wasn't all it was cracked up to be (ba dum bum).
It's that old story about a man who takes any TV job to work up to what he wants to be doing.

CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 19 saw the return of Farrow, who was briefly a suspect on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 2.
And what a comeback! Farrow crashed into the CSI lab, covered in blood and waving around a cleaver, begging Allie for help.

But even forgiving the way he made his entrance, Gene quickly dissipated any goodwill he may have accumulated, whining about how his life had gone to hell since he was falsely accused the first time.
Gene's target Allie was feeling a little bit of guilt for the false accusations the last time around, but Serena wasn't buying what he was selling this time.

Gene's target Allie was feeling a little bit of guilt for the false accusations the last time around, but Serena wasn't buying what he was selling this time.
Gene's tale of two burglars breaking into his great-aunt's...

Poor Folsom ended up dazed and confused.
First, Josh escaped severe injury after an explosion on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 18. And that ended up being the less painful part of his day.
The rest of the team also faced a complicated case with way too many suspects.
Let's begin with the strange bombing and follow Folsom later as his past threatened to endanger his future.
A gambling-style schmoozefest by a would-be casino developer got disrupted by an explosion, eventually drawing most of the CSIs into action.
The blast killed three people, including the developer and the contractor who would have built the casino. Neither was universally loved.
Of course, there was also a foot left over because this is CSI, where weird things like that happen with regularity. It would have little impact on solving the case, but it was strange nonetheless.
Even Milton mentioned it, joking that stray limbs...

CSI: Vegas just closed its ongoing silver ink case, which was introduced at the end of Season 1. So now will be seeing strictly cases-of-the-week for the rest of Season 2? “We’ve got some cases, we’ve got another little arc coming to do with — in this season, we’ve seen how difficult it is for Folsom [Matt Lauria], who grew up in Vegas around some very rough stuff, and he’s got some challenging family members and that’s going to come to the fore,” showrunner Jason Tracey recently told TV Insider. “We do have plenty of big cases of the week, but we also have the rumbles of and a ramp-up to a very personal finale and I think it might be time to focus on Folsom.” The aforementioned silver ink case closed out Season 1. Will this spring’s finale (airing May 18) similarly set up a multi-episode case for next year?...

The crime lab squad almost got there this time.
The team closed in on the Silver Ink mastermind thanks to clues gleaned from the bizarre death scene of Dr. Auerbach on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 15.
If only that were the end of it. But no such luck.
It was fascinating that Auerbach had contributed to the rise of the Silver Ink killers, but not in a way that anybody suspected.
While she wasn't directly responsible for the current murder spree, she certainly indirectly had a hand in creating the mastermind, despite her best efforts.
It was disappointing that, with all the characters somehow connected to this case, the mastermind came out of nowhere, introduced in the opening flashback foreshadowing Auerbach's eventual murder.
Employing such a deus ex machina to resolve a storyline feels like a copout, and that was certainly the case to some degree here.
Still, Max's team is making slow progress,...

This case of the week was hard to stomach.
That's because the episode was set in the world of competitive eating on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 14.
And, shockingly, the victim didn't eat himself to death, as would have been a logical guess.
This episode was notable because of the substitute medical examiner, Dr. Milton Hudson, played by Derek Webster.
The Las Vegas morgue has been somewhat adrift since the departure of Mel Rodriguez's Hugo Ramirez.
Hugo was a big, quirky, likable personality who has been sorely missed.
His replacements, the sister-and-brother team of Sonya and Jack Nikolayevich, just haven't filled Hugo's scrubs. She's been prickly, and he's been whiny.
Maybe that's why the morgue hasn't been as prominent a part of the investigative action as it has in past seasons of the reboot and the original series.
That's why Milton's visit was intriguing. He also was quirky and likable.

It can't be that simple, can it?
The team drew ever closer to exposing the mastermind behind the murders of electroshock patients on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 13.
With another eight episodes this season, doesn't it feel a little early to be wrapping up this storyline?
In a case that illustrates how rampant guns are in this country, a mentally-distressed woman shoots and kills a man who had come to her house to murder her.
What's that pro-Second Amendment mantra? The only way to stop a bad man with a gun is a good, mentally-distressed woman with a gun?
What should have been a quickly closed case of self-defense became so much more thanks to Maxine's eagle eyes.
Max noticed that Molly, the target of the intruder, had telltale signs of electroshock therapy on her temples. When Max confronted her about such treatment in her past, Molly accused her of reading her mind,...

Sadly, this day has been coming for a while.
Catherine Willows will disappear for a time after CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 12. But it's for a good reason and hopefully is short-term.
Fans of the original CSI rejoiced when Marg Helgenberger agreed to bring back Catherine to CSI: Vegas Season 2.
Just like with Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle on CSI: Vegas Season 1, having Catherine back has been a blessing. It enables fans to hearken back to the glory days of what was once a franchise.
And frankly, Catherine plays better with the new lab members than Gil and Sara ever did. They came back with a mission: to save the lab's reputation and also Hodges, the fall guy for that season's big bad.
Of course, Catherine did return with her own crusade: to find her missing protege, Grace Huang, which soon morphs into making Grace's killer(s) pay.

Finally, Beau comes to the fore.
Beau Finado, the lab's older yet new criminologist, was in the spotlight on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 11.
Like Chris Park on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 10, Beau learned things about himself that he hadn't considered when he switched to becoming a CSI.
Since his debut on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 1, it was evident that Beau wasn't your average newbie in the crime lab.
He explained that he had had an epiphany during the pandemic and wanted to contribute more to society than better cleaning agents working for a chemical company.
That was also the episode when lab legend Catherine Willows returned to the fold. So the mystery of Beau was shelved as he faded into the background.
He was content to collect and analyze samples while attempting to learn his new job, taking big swings and missing as often as he connected. Beau was that...

Social media can be dangerous.
Yeah, CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 10 had a simplistic message.
But it did get young CSI Chris front and center. So that kind of balanced out things.
With the case of the week set at a party for social-media influencers, Chris was the logical choice to be involved.
That was because his side hustle was posting videos about CSI procedures as @chrissolves. Even though he never posted about ongoing cases, Maxine was right to be concerned once she learned that he was doing so, even though it was on his own time.
Chris has always been the oddity in the lab, connected to the outside world while working with a group of oblivious nerds. It's not an age thing. It's an interest thing.
He should have clued in his potential bosses about this hobby when applying for the CSI. Even though, it turned out, @chrissolves could...

It's encouraging to see storylines from earlier this season get picked up again rather than letting them float along unresolved.
CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 9 brought home the point that there's a big bad who hasn't been revealed.
That's a relief. Catherine solved Grace's murder on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 8, seemingly wrapping up the main ongoing story arc. But now it's revealed that there's a new storyline to enjoy for the rest of this season.
It turns out that three of the nine cases in CSI: Vegas Season 2 are connected, even though it didn't appear so at first.
This case with two murders at a Regency romance festival just seemed like another of the bizarre murders that the Vegas CSI lab keeps having dropped in their laps.
But no. It hearkened back to CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 1, in which a dominatrix was murdered by a seeming wackadoo, Alan Herskovitz.
Herskovitz also went after Lamont Moore,...

What initially appeared to be weird ended up quite simple in the end.
Relationships were at the heart of CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 7.
Not only relationships between the victims and the murderers but also among the various CSI team members investigating the bizarre case.
Right off the bat were the relationships among Maxine, her staff, and her family as she attempted to ignore the Ptd resulting from her assault on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 3.
Because her denial therapy has been working so damn well for her. Just ask any of her teammates or her neglected son.
A sleep-deprived Max was in precisely the right mood for a middle-of-the-night callout. Serena took the brunt of the first blast from Max when she failed to deliver the necessary search warrant. Why did they need a search warrant for such an evident crime scene?
Serena, who had already addressed Max's condition on CSI: Vegas...

Having a body frozen to death in a city near the Nevada desert was an enjoyable twist.
Added to that was the victim, a chef that many who knew him had reason to want dead on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 6.
Then there were all the possible causes of death for him, which made for a fascinating case of the week.
Besides Maxine, all the other CSIs seemed totally out of their element in an industrial freezer. The Vegas natives and Indian Allie weren't used to working in the cold, and that was evident.
Exhibit A was that jacket Serena was wearing, stylish but hardly warm. But then, it was unlikely that anyone besides Max had a parka in their closets.
Even Max bailed from that freezer as soon as she could, a hint that all wasn't right with her, something Serena noticed.

Things aren't always what they seem.
Something that appeared to be a mass-casualty event ended up being more straightforward and much more personal on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 5.
It came down to a matter of perspective.
The paranoia that we all live in today contributes to the early misperception.
With the rampant fear of biochemical weapons, it was little wonder that everyone's minds went there when the guests fell ill at a local university's science department fundraiser.
I mean, who knows what they were working on for which shadowy government or corporate entity and who might be opposed to such research?
So, Maxine mandating hazard suits to protect against the unknown made perfect sense.
But something was going on with Max. She was skittish and was taking it out on everyone around her, especially the well-meaning Beau, who is still feeling his way along in his new role as a CSI.

What a fascinating pairing: The CSI legend and the youngest criminologist!
Catherine and Penny were in the spotlight on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 4.
So, apparently, Penny is more than a technician who stays mainly in the lab, such as Hodges and Wendy in the original series.
But it was equally clear that Penny hadn't been present on a crime scene of that magnitude before.
And, after discovering that her texts were being blocked by her estranged daughter Lindsey. Catherine was in precisely the right frame of mind to mother somebody.
Maxine was still out of action from her injuries suffered on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 3.
Folsom has proven that he's perfectly capable of running a crime scene. But supervising the investigation of the murders of a whole family ls the perfect scenario for Catherine to step in.
This probably shouldn't be said about a quadruple homicide, but solving the crime...

"I shot an arrow in the air, and where it lands, I do not care."
That about summed up the case of the week on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 3.
Only the final result ended up much sadder, with multiple victims and few criminals.
It also became apparent that the Folsom-Allie-Serena triangle will be a prominent storyline this season.
Folsom's back story is also moving to the fore, with only one legacy character to highlight instead of the multiple ones on CSI: Vegas Season 1.
Mindy Downs' death was a bizarre one for the CSIs to solve. But then, aren't they all?
Mindy had crashed her car into a pole. She had a big bag of money in the car. Somewhere along the way, she had been shot, which likely explained her accident.
Didn't you love the stupid kid who felt the need to take a selfie in front of Mindy's death scene?...

The crime lab really brought the ick this time out.
Also, they continued to make enemies on CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 2.
It's a little early for what felt like a Halloween episode. But it is Vegas, where creepy is a year-round thing.
So why not peer inside that city's cottage industry known as haunted houses?
What I want to know is if there's such a thing as a haunted house wedding chapel. It would seem like a natural hybrid.
But I digress. An establishment such as Necropolis would be an ideal place to stash a body if it's appropriately disguised.
It certainly was well hidden in this case, as the thick coat of paint not only stopped the smell of decomposition but also caused the body to liquefy inside that casing. Beau's joke about almost being named Stew was totally inappropriate and perfectly appropriate at the same time.

Catherine Willows is back, and CSI: Vegas is the better for it.
CSI: Vegas Season 2 Episode 1 already marked another time of transition for this revival of the once-hit series.
William Peterson and Jorja Fox departed after one season, so Gil and Sara had to disappear.
Fortunately, despite her role on All Rise, Marg Helgenberger was amenable to a return to Las Vegas.
Let's face it. The revival can't yet stand on its own two feet. While the new team may appeal to fresh viewers, fans of the old series want to see the OGs they know and love.
Catherine was the favorite of many viewers. Gil was the aloof scientist; Catherine was the people person. She was the more accessible member of management.
There was a believable setup for Catherine's return.
The lab was short-handed after Gil and Sara's departures and Allie's absence for lengthy training in Los Angeles. Catherine...

A new spin on an old classic is in the works at Disney+. According to Variety, the streamer is in the process of developing a live-action King Kong series. While differing rights to "King Kong" stories have resulted in several on-screen versions over the years, including the Legendary-Warner Bros. MonsterVerse saga, the latest iteration is going back to the source material. It will reportedly be based on the original story by Merian C. Cooper, plus more modern "King Kong" novelizations by Joe DeVito, which were made in conjunction with Cooper's estate.
Most interestingly, the new project already has some great talent on board behind the camera. Horror director James Wan will executive produce through his company Atomic Monster, with Michael Clear and Rob Hackett also on board as EPs. The show will be written and executive produced by Stephany Folsom, who recently developed the '80s teen sci-fi comics "Paper Girls" for Prime Video.

King Kong is going from Skull Island to Disney+.
The iconic movie monster, who first appeared in Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 masterpiece, will be headed to Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform in “King Kong” (working title). The project will be the first live-action series set in the Kong Universe, and hails from James Wan and his Atomic Monster production company and Stephany Folsom, who has worked on Disney projects like “Toy Story 4” and “Thor: Ragnarok.”
Well, I guess the news is out. I'm beyond excited to be working with these people on one of my favorite stories. #KingKong https://t.co/ibpAYGs6uc

Amazon’s Paper Girls features time travel, a burgeoning interdimensional conflict and giant robots straight out of Pacific Rim. It’s certain to earn everybody’s lazy comparisons to Stranger Things, though it feels essential to mention that Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Image Comics series predates Netflix’s exercise in ’80s teen nostalgia.
You can’t describe Paper Girls without talking about its science fiction spine. That, however, is not the thing. It’s the thing that gets you to the thing.
If you don’t get that reference, get thee to a streaming platform that carries Halt and Catch Fire immediately. If you got the reference, but wonder why anybody would use a Halt and Catch Fire reference to describe a show that’s Stranger Things — sorry, it’s unavoidable — by way of The Baby-Sitters Club, it’s notable...

If adaptations of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic books didn’t have terrible luck with timing, they’d have no luck at all.
Vaughan has co-created some of the most acclaimed, beloved comics of this century, but they have tended to involve such elaborate concepts and dense storytelling that they’ve taken an incredibly long time to journey from page to screen. As a result, they’ve arrived in other media at the worst possible moments. Runaways, about the rebellious teenage children of a group of supervillains, debuted on Hulu...

The foursome of newspaper delivery girls is transported to 2019 and forced to find a way home, all while confronting their older adult selves.
Ali Wong plays the grown-up version of Erin, who helps the tweens escape the present. Nate Corddry and Adina Porter also star in the ensemble series.
