Joe Diffie, a consistent country-music hitmaker throughout the Nineties, died Sunday due to complications related to Covid-19. His publicist confirmed the death to Rolling Stone. Diffie was 61.
With a traditional-leaning voice that drew comparisons to George Jones, Diffie populated his records with honky-tonk ballads and lighthearted novelty tunes, earning the Oklahoma native five Number One singles in the first half of the Nineties. These began with his debut release, the deeply moving “Home,” followed by “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “Third Rock From the Sun,” “Pickup Man,” and “Bigger Than the Beatles.

With his bottle-blond mullet, tacky shirts, and this-close-to-offensive catchy songs (like “Pretty Woman Lover”), zookeeper-country singer Joe Exotic looks and sounds like he emerged from country’s less-polished past.

The narcissistic star of Netflix’s big-cats-meet-crime-docuseries Tiger King, unleashed on the streaming service just as the world went into self-isolation, believes in himself as much as he does in his wild beasts. Along with serenading them in on-the-nose country...

When Jimmie Allen first began writing and singing songs after moving to Nashville, his main goal was to impress his peers. But a decade later, when it came to recording his debut album, Mercury Lane, Allen had a realization: “I used to be like, ‘Man, I wonder if this songwriter or producer would like this?’” says the 32-year-old singer. “But all respect to them, it’s not about them. When making this record, I wasn’t thinking about creating songs that I feel like other songwriters or artists or producers will approve of,...

There were no catfights on Thursday's American Idol. No one stormed off the set. Everyone was on their best behavior as contestants auditioned in Baton Rouge, La.
That's not to say that things didn't get weird. Nicki Minaj nicknamed one contestant "Mushroom" and rubbed her fingers through his hair to bestow her "special powers" on him. (Whenever Minaj speaks, Mariah Carey simply stares off into space, as if she's just trying to find her happy place.) The Idol producers also began a baffling trend of splicing footage of squealing farm animals between the bad auditions.
But there were some bright spots: Burnell Taylor,...

Former "American Idol" finalist Kristy Lee Cook is back on TV -- and she's packing heat.
Cook, who finished seventh on Season 7 of "Idol" in 2008, is starring in a new series about her life, her music and big-game hunting called "Goin' Country with Kristy Lee Cook." It's airing on cable channel Versus, home to National Hockey League regular-season games, the Tour de France and lots of outdoor shows.
