Bollywood and Alfred Hitchcock are two words you would never associate with each other, but 2024's Merry Christmas marries the two worlds in a stunning holiday murder mystery. Available in Hindi, Tamil and Telegu, Merry Christmas is the perfect movie to revisit as the holiday season draws near after its release in January, kicking off the celebrations with a satisfying and strangely profound note. Director Sriram Raghavan is known for his 2018 creative murder mystery Andhadhun, and he recreates the same palpable tension in this festive feature, though it is imbued with darker implications. Pulsing in vibrant colors and pleasing esthetics, the film somehow manages to pack in the ante of a Hitchcockian mystery with the feel-good atmosphere of Christmas magic.

Alfred Hitchcock is, as the kids would say, the G.O.A.T. when it comes to crime thrillers. And I love how so many of his protagonists unknowingly find themselves in the middle of a mystery, but, over the course of the film, prove that they were probably the right person to end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Merry Christmas has been in the making for a long. Due to Covid-19 and several other reasons, the film suffered many delays and finally got itself scheduled for a release on 12th January. Telugu-language Indian superhero film “Hanu Man” has emerged as a hit and is adding screens in North America.

The film is set in the fictional village of Anjanadri and follows Hanumanthu, who miraculously awakens Hindu god Lord Hanuman’s power after being involved in an accident near the sea. It is directed by Prasanth Varma (“Zombie Reddy”), stars Teja Sajja (“Adbhutam”), Amritha Aiyer (“Arjuna Phalguna”), Varalaxmi Sarathkumar (“Kota Bommali Ps”) and Vinay Rai (“Gandeevadhari Arjuna”). It is produced by Niranjan Reddy Kandagatla for Primeshow Entertainment.

Merry Christmas saw a bit of a growth on Sunday with 3.75 crores* coming in. This is again on expected lines since Saturday growth had suggested that while there would be an increase in numbers on Sunday as well, it would be under control.

From here, it’s all about how well the film sustains on Monday. If the collections stay on to be over the 2 crores mark, then one can expect a reasonable lifetime total to build in. However, if it does below that and gets into that 1.50-1.75 crores range, it may just emerge as a two-week runner with Fighter arriving on 25th January.

This is a well-made film by Sriram Raghavan and going by merits, it deserves to collect at least 50 crores. However, even by a conservative estimate, Merry Christmas should go past the 30 crores mark at least in its lifetime.

Ypd, starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol & Dharmendra, collected 7.75 crore on February 14. The film collected 55 crore in its lifetime and 23 crore on the Sankranti weekend. It was a hit at the box office.

After bringing in 2.30 crore on its opening day, Merry Christmas saw an increase in numbers on Saturday, with 3.40 crore being collected. The growth is there, though a little less than 50%. Ideally, anything over 3.50 crore would have had a better ring to it, and that would also have set an added momentum for the film.

Nonetheless, the good part is that the film is not flat, and there is growth. Since the only competition for Sriram Raghavan’s suspense thriller is Hanuman, and that’s also playing with similar numbers, both films have ample space to keep growing and bring in their own audience.
