"Magic is all around us," says John Cleese in voiceover. We will later discover that he, and, one suspects a number of stand-ins, are playing a Mr Bridwell. Named for the eponymous animal's creator, Norman Bridwell created Emily Elizabeth and Clifford The Big Red Dog back in 1963. The book where he goes to Hollywood was 1980, but it took a few more years for screen adaptations. Variously released already, in some cinemas at some points, this is a family animal picture in a traditional fashion. While it's got some quirks it's relatively inoffensive, and if it feels like damning it with faint praise to say it's got nothing drastically wrong with it then fair enough.
It is less off-putting than the quota of saliva, urine, snot and flatulence jokes that are as much a part of dog movies like Turner & Hooch and Beethoven as weirdly obsessed baddies. Here (among...

As the film relocates the action to NYC, Emily Elizabeth and co try to keep Clifford out of the hands of a nefarious company
Author Norman Bridwell’s picture book series about Clifford the Big Red Dog represented a wholesome slice of mid-century Americana, with the self-explanatorily named title character, an enormous vermillion hound, loved and cared for by his owner Emily Elizabeth Howard, perhaps in the way an American dad of the period would have loved and cared for a Cadillac. A few TV series based on the story moved with the times but largely stuck to the kiddie-centric, suburban world of the books.
This reboot feature film has clearly taken its inspiration from the peerless Paddington films, which cleverly updated classic children’s literature property by resituating the setting to contemporary London, idealistically envisioned as a multicultural melange populated by lovable eccentrics. So here we have Clifford as...

“Eternals” will keep its crown at the domestic box office, as the Marvel entry is projected to repeat as No. 1 with an estimated $27 million gross in its second weekend.
Should current projections pan out, the MCU entry will fall approximately 62% in its sophomore outing. Measured against the second weekends of other Marvel Studios releases this year, that’s a much steeper drop than the 52% sink of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and a healthier one than the 67% tumble “Black Widow” took. However, that latter film simultaneously debuted as a rental on Disney Plus through the streamer’s Premier Access program, a release strategy that undoubtedly impacted its ultimate box office performance.
“Eternals” is headed for one of the larger second weekend drops in the MCU’s eleven-year history. “Black Widow” outstanding, the only other franchise entries to fall at least 62% in their sophomore outings are 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp...

It’s important to acknowledge one’s pre-existing biases in criticism, so here goes: I’ve never really cottoned to Clifford the Big Red Dog. It’s always struck me as one of the most inexplicable of popular children’s properties – so it’s a dog, and it’s red, and it’s big. Kind of a one-note thing, really, and Norman Bridwell’s books (and the various cartoons and other media inspired by it) mostly just coast on the premise.

Clifford the Big Red Dog was born in a series of children’s books, the first of which was published in 1963. In the decades since, the adventures of the scarlet canine mascot-hero have been spun into three popular PBS Kids TV series, a live musical, video games, and the 2004 animated feature “Clifford’s Really Big Movie,” which was adapted from one of the TV series (and did very little business). All of which is to say that unlikely as it may sound, the new “Clifford the Big Red Dog” is the first really big Clifford movie. So what does that mean?
It means that the film retains some of the benign humanistic qualities of its source, but that it has also been shoved into the knockabout slapstick high jinks paradigm of such CGI-critter-meets-live-action comedies as “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Garfield: The Movie” and the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” films. It may seem like damning with faint praise to suggest that the reason Clifford the Big Red Dog succeeds as well as it does is that it doesn’t try to do too much in the first place. It’s not reinventing the wheel or breaking new ground; it’s unlikely to wow audiences with its bold artistic vision or profound emotional depths. "People don't like things that are different." Paramount Pictures has debuted the second official trailer for their live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog movie, based on the classic Scholastic book series by Norman Bridwell. The first trailer arrived in the summer and was made fun of by almost everyone, mostly because the giant red dog look so odd. Technically this is a "hybrid" movie because Clifford is actually entirely CGI, though they did use a giant maquette on set during filming. A girl's love for a tiny puppy named Clifford makes the dog grow to an enormous size. Emily and her fun but impulsive uncle Casey then set out on an adventure that will keep you on the edge-of-your-seat as our heroes take a bite out of the Big Apple. After delaying its initial release, Paramount Pictures announced that the live-action “Clifford the Big Red Dog” will open both in theaters and on Paramount Plus on Nov. 10.
Based on the children’s book series written by Norman Bridwell, the film will follow middle-schooler Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) who meets a magical animal rescuer (John Cleese) and is given a little, red puppy only to wake up to find a giant ten-foot hound in her small New York City apartment. While her single mom (Sienna Guillory) is away for business, Emily and her uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) set out on an adventure for audiences to behold.

No media property is “real” until it becomes as big as it possibly can be, until it becomes a movie. Every novel, every comics series, every TV show, every webseries, every nonfiction book, every song, every TikTok sea shanty aspires to turn into a big budget motion-picture that will dilute and adulterate what was special about the original thing while making vast amounts of money for the same few global multimedia conglomerates and making the newly shiny, market-tested and subtly stupider thing vastly better known among people who would never bother to pay attention to the original thing.
This is yet another sign that our world is inherently flawed, and that, if there are any gods, they hate us.

Decades ago, Lassie Come Home was a pretty big feature film, but this news about an on-screen dog is even bigger -- at least in physical size. Scholastic is rebooting the beloved, animated Clifford the Big Red Dog TV show for PBS Kids and Amazon Prime, with a start date Tbd in 2019. The updated series is based on the character created by the late author and illustrator Norman Bridwell, who published his first Clifford the Big Red Dog book in 1963. The original Clifford the Big Red Dog premiered on PBS in the year 2000 and ran for three seasons. The late John Ritter voiced the title character. A prequel, Clifford’s Puppy Days ran from 2003 to 2006 and featured the vocal talents of Lara Jill Miller and Henry Winkler. Read More…...

Though Universal first adopted Clifford the Big Red Dog, tentatively placing a big-screen movie on course for release in 2016, Deadline brings word that the giant canine has now found a home at Paramount.
Enlisting screenwriter Justin Malen (Baywatch), it’s understood the rejuvenated feature film will incorporate both CGI and live-action sequences in a manner not dissimilar to Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book.
A product of celebrated author and cartoonist Norman Bridwell, Clifford the Big Red Dog first roared to life all the way back in the early ’60s, going on to become a fixture of childhoods nationwide through Bridwell’s own novels and the eventual TV adaptations. Now, a bona fide feature film is in the works.
Orbiting around Emily Elizabeth, a pint-sized young girl who grows up in a rural community, Clifford kicks into gear when, inexplicably, Emily’s loveable birthday present grows to be 25 feet tall.

“Norman Bridwell’s books about Clifford, childhood’s most loveable dog, could only have been written by a gentle man with a great sense of humor,” Scholastic chief Dick Robinson said. “Norman personified the values that we as parents and educators hope to communicate to our children – kindness, compassion, helpfulness, gratitude – through the Clifford stories which have been loved for more than 50 years.”

Another beloved childhood character is heading to the big screen. Universal recently announced that an adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog, based on the children’s book series by Norman Bridwell, will be hitting theaters on April 8th, 2016.
Plot details for the film are scarce, but Bridwell’s series centered on a dog named Clifford, born the runt of the litter. When he was given to Emily Elizabeth as a birthday present, the little girl’s love for him caused Clifford to swell in size to a height of over 25 feet. Given the dog’s size, his owner’s family had no choice but to move to the wide open spaces of Bridwell Island, where Clifford encountered new friends like Cleo, Mac and T-Bone. Over 70 installments of the book series, which also spawned a popular PBS Kids TV show, have been released.
