The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on April 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 30) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 30). Just like the first page of a novel, a series’ or episode’s opening 10 minutes acts like a door. If executed successfully, it will make viewers want to run through that entrance, not just walk through it. Those 600 seconds have to not only grab hold of a viewer, but they also have to set the tone of the entire piece. It took nearly 50 years for “Amazing Grace” to land in theaters, but one aspect of its journey appears unfinished. Variety reports that Chiemi Karasawa has filed an arbitration case against Alan Elliott for what she says is unpaid work on the Aretha Franklin documentary. “I have not been paid a dime of my Producer Fee or the amounts that I am entitled to contractually,” she told Variety. “I’m saddened that it’s come to this point, but thrilled that the film is being released for a public audience where it belongs.”

After 47 years, the Aretha Franklin concert documentary “Amazing Grace” finally arrives in theaters Friday. Alan Elliott has told the story of how he rescued the unreleased footage from the Warner Bros. vault, had it restored and assembled, and then spent years negotiating with Franklin and her estate to secure the film’s release.
But absent from that story is producer Chiemi Karasawa, who alleges that she played a critical role in bringing the film to screen and has not been paid for her work.
Karasawa recently filed an arbitration case against Elliott, alleging that she is owed a producer fee and other compensation for years of work on the project. Among other things, she says she arranged to retrieve the footage and process it, oversaw the editing of the film, and set up screenings for industry figures that ultimately led to its theatrical release.

A time capsule that’s as fresh and powerful an experience as it must have been when recorded live in Watts in 1972, Amazing Grace is arguably one of the year’s most-anticipated films arriving after years of litigation and a near-fatal technical glitch that was resolved thanks to digital workflows. Following the success of concert films like Woodstock and director Sydney Pollack’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and The Way We Were, the young director was retained by Warner Brothers to shoot the recording of Aretha Franklin’s landmark album. The singer, after a string of successful singles, decided to return to her roots singling gospel in church accompanied by the Southern California Gospel Choir and the Reverend James Cleveland.
The album would go on to sell two million copies and achieve double platinum certification, and while its jacket advertised an upcoming motion picture, the film sat in the vaults of Warner Brothers.

Eric Zumbrunnen, film editor and longtime Spike Jonze collaborator, has died at age 52 following a battle with cancer. The editor worked on every Spike Jonze feature, either by himself or with co-editor Jeff Buchanan, and he won the Ace Award for Best Edited Feature Film for “Being John Malkovich.”

In a mildly interesting turn of events, if below-the-line categories at the Oscars are your thing, occurred last night as Captain Phillips was named the Best Edited Feature Drama by the American Cinema Editors (Ace) at the 2014 Eddie Awards while American Hustle won in the comedy category. Now this doesn't mean anything in the Best Picture race at the Oscars as we're still looking at a battle between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity there, but this does make the Editing race a little more interesting. In the animated category it was Frozen taking the win and 20 Feet from Stardom won for Best Documentary Editing. Spike Jonze's Her may be competing at the Golden Globes on Sunday as a comedy, but as far as the American Cinema Editors (Ace) are concerned it's a drama as the org announced the nominees for the 2014 Ace Eddie Awards this morning in three categories. Last year these nominations were announced before the Oscars, giving little reason to look at them and add to the speculation as to which films would eventually be nominated for Best Editing at the Oscars. Looking over the list, I must say I'm surprised to see Daniel P. Hanley and Mike Hill's work on Rush didn't make the cut, instead replaced by Mark Livolski's Saving Mr. Banks. I guess editing in all those flashbacks was looked at as impressive. Otherwise, while I haven't touched my Best Film Editing predictions since first posting them, four of my top five were nominated by the Ace...

‘Her’ movie tops 2013 San Diego Film Critics Awards (Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Her’) The San Diego Film Critics Society has released its list of 2013 nominees and winners. The nominations themselves were quite eclectic, ranging from Best Actress nominee Brie Larson for Short Term 12 to Best Film nominee Gravity. The list of winners, however, tended to be more mainstream. For instance, Warner Bros.’ Spike Jonze-directed Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a Scarlett Johansson-voiced computer, was chosen as the Best Film of 2013, in addition to receiving honors for Best Original Screenplay (also Spike Jonze) and Best Score (Arcade Fire). Warner Bros. Pictures has moved the release date of Spike Jonze’s already much anticipated romantic drama “Her.” The film will now open in limited release in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto on December 18, 2013, and wide on January 10, 2014. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The move comes on the heels of strong positive reactions coming out of early screenings. “Her” has also just been announced by the New York Film Festival as its selection for the prestigious Closing Night Gala slot. The date change allows the studio to take full advantage of word of mouth resulting from the Festival screening, placing the film in the key awards consideration corridor and positioning it for its December opening and wider launch in January.
In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “Spike Jonze has created an unconventional love story that is thought-provoking and reflective of our modern age.

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that Her, the new modern-day love story from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich”) and Annapurna Pictures, will open in limited release on November 20, 2013.
The film will be released initially in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, with future cities and dates to be announced.
Written, directed and produced by Jonze, Her stars Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master”), Amy Adams (“The Master”), Scarlett Johansson (“Hitchcock”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Chris Pratt (“Moneyball”) and Olivia Wilde (“People Like Us”).
Joining Jonze as producers on the film are Vincent Landay and Megan Ellison. Daniel Lupi and Ted Schipper will serve as executive producers, with Natalie Farrey and Chelsea Barnard as co-producers.

What it's about: A man is released from prison in Quebec and is not accepted in his own family. He goes to New York City to sell Christmas trees with the man who has usurped his family life. About the filmmaker: I grew up in North Carolina and moved to NY to go to college in 1985. I made the movie "Junebug," which came out in 2005. What else do you want audiences to know? It stars Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, Sally Hawkins, and Amy Landecker. It was written by Melissa James Gibson. The producers were Luca Borghese Daniel Carey, Elizabeth Giamatti, Mike Hogan, Sidney Kimmel, Louise Lovegrove, John Penotti, and Jim Tauber. The Dp was Mott Hupfel. It was edited by Jeff Buchanan. Like some Gallic version of Tim Burton, Michel Gondry's initial promise has given way to a series of films whose diminishing returns demonstrate that he's a talented visualist without the capacity for, or worse, any interest in, telling an actual story. Gondry's defenders will, of course, point to the excellent "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," but the passage of years has made it abundantly clear that the credit for that film is entirely screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's; Gondry may have gotten out of the way of that script, but that's hardly a reason to celebrate his skills or capablities, such as they are, beyond that. The messy "Be Kind, Rewind," the cutesy-creepy "The Science of Sleep," the noisome and needless "Green Hornet" ... Gondry's name above a title has gone from being a reason to seek a film to being a reason to shun it.
