Rob Thomas has stepped down as executive producer/showrunner on ABC's single-camera midseason comedy Miss/Guided over creative differences.
20th Century Fox TV-based writer-producer Mark Hudis has been tapped to run the show, which 20th TV is producing with ABC Studios.
"Miss/Guided," which hails from Ashton Kutcher's Katalyst Prods., stars Judy Greer as an ugly duckling who returns to her alma mater as a guidance counselor.
Thomas came aboard the project following the cancellation of his critically acclaimed CW drama Veronica Mars in May.
"Miss/Guided" has since changed direction, going for a stronger comedic quotient, which led to Thomas' decision to leave, sources said.
Thomas is known for his work in the one-hour format, while Hudis has a strong sitcom background. Hudis worked on Fox's hit comedy That '70s Show for its eight-year run, rising through the ranks to executive producer.
"Miss/Guided" reunites him with " '70s" co-star Kutcher. Hudis and Kutcher are executive producing the new ABC comedy with director Todd Holland, Jason Goldberg and Karey Burke.

Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg's Katalyst Films has inked a broad, multifaceted two-year deal with CBS Corp. that spans four TV divisions of the media conglomerate.
An overall pact with CBS Paramount Network Television will make Katalyst exclusive to the studio for scripted development.
Networks CBS and the CW, CBS' joint venture with Warner Bros. Entertainment, will have a first look on Katalyst's alternative/reality projects.
Additionally, Katalyst is making its first foray into the first-run syndication business with an exclusive development deal at CBS Television Distribution.
Katalyst comes to CBS from 20th Century Fox TV, where it was under an overall deal for the past three years, developing such projects for the studio and its alternative production arm Fox 21 as the CW's hit reality series Beauty and the Geek and comedy series Miss/Guided. The latter, Katalyst's first scripted series, recently was picked up by ABC for midseason.
Unlike the deal with 20th TV, the pact with CBS allows Katalyst to retain the international format and distribution rights to its unscripted shows. The format for its popular Beauty series has been a big international seller for 20th TV.
Under the deal with CBS, Katalyst's TV efforts will continue to be shepherded by principal Karey Burke, who has signed a new deal with the company.
"Their track record speaks for itself," CBS Paramount Network TV president David Stapf said of Katalyst, which burst onto the primetime scene in 2003 with MTV's hugely successful reality series Punk'd, which Kutcher and Goldberg created.

MTV's celebrity prank show Punk'd is going out with a bang.
The cable network said Monday that the upcoming season will be the last for the show from co-creator/executive producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg. In a first for the network, MTV is planning to debut the entire final season -- all eight episodes -- back-to-back in a "Sneak Peek Marathon" starting at 1 p.m. April 7. The series then premieres at 9 p.m. April 10 as part of a new Tuesday night block that also will include Scarred at 9:30 p.m., "Real World/Road Rules Inferno" at 10 p.m. and Living Lahaina at 10:30 p.m.
"We decided to make an event out of it," said Brian Graden, president of entertainment at MTV Networks Music Group and president of Logo. "We're looking to experiment with many alternate programming and premiere models as a way for things to take hold in an age of technology."
This isn't the first time MTV has come up with an innovative way to air its programming.
