Endeavor’s publicly traded Tko Group has named Dwayne Johnson to its board of directors, effective today. The WWE superstar has also secured full ownership of the trademarked name The Rock.
Tko is the parent company of WWE and UFC.
The name The Rock is derived from his father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who was the first Black champion in WWE history (alongside partner Tony Atlas). Johnson’s grandfather, Peter Maivia, a Samoan-American professional wrestler, was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.
Rock and WWE have inked a merchandising agreement that provides for promotion, licensing, and other services.
“I am thrilled to partner with Dwayne and welcome his immense talent to Tko’s Board. Dwayne brings an incredible track record of creating content and building globally recognized consumer brands, and he will play a key role in realizing our ambitions for Tko,” said Tko (and Endeavor) CEO Ariel Emanuel.

Disney has successfully mined its animated back catalogue for live-action (usually with CG elements) remakes for years now. But they're usually decades after the originals. With the announcement – originally courtesy of CEO Bob Iger to shareholders, but via The Rock for audiences — that 2016's Moana is joining the list – you have to wonder if the live-action version will be announced for the likes of say, the upcoming Wish a week after the original arrives.
It's early days for the new movie, but from the sounds of it, Dwayne Johnson will certainly be back as Maui. "I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen," he says in a statement. If you thought Disney was slowing down with its live-action remakes of animated hits, you thought wrong. Instead, the Mouse House is putting its foot on the accelerator by announcing a live-action remake of "Moana," a mere six years and change after the original arrived in theaters. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the South Pacific demigod Maui in the animated film and even showed off his singing skills in the number "You're Welcome," announced the "reimagining" (Disney's preferred branding for its live-action remakes) in a video that also features his two youngest daughters, Jasmine and Tiana.

Finally, after a seven year absence, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returned to his spiritual home on February 14th, 2011.
After quietly retiring from the ring in 2004 to make the full-time transition to Hollywood, DJ enjoyed huge success as he garnered massive exposure on the big-screen with a string of box office hits. Save for extremely rare cameos on Raw and Smackdown, infamously via satellite, and the 2008 Hall of Fame ceremony (where he inducted his father Rocky Johnson and grandfather Peter Maivia), we wouldn’t see the People’s Champ back in the ring until February 11th 2011, where he was revealed as the surprise guest host of Wrestlemania 27.
Rock’s return gave the company a huge shot in the arm in terms of mainstream popularity, and the rivalry with John Cena was arguably the company’s most high-profile since his battles with Stone Cold Steve Austin during the attitude era.

In a beautiful gesture, he gave his "Uncle Tonga" a brand new truck for Christmas as a way to say thank you for everything he did for Dwayne when he was just starting out in the WWE. Along with posting a photo of the two of them standing in front of the car on Instagram, Dwayne included the following heartwarming story about his uncle: Merry Christmas Uncle Tonga - enjoy your new truck! Cool Christmas story to share with y'all... Known my "Uncle Tonga" since I was 5yrs old. My grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia helped train him to become a professional wrestler in the 70's.

No matter the stage, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the best performers of his generation.
Breaking out on the WWF circuit in the mid-90s as the smack-talking "The Rock," Johnson eventually outgrew the ring and brought his talents to the big screen. The starring roles came immediately with sleeper hits such as "The Rundown" (2003) and "Walking Tall" (2004), and it wasn't long before the big blockbusters came calling. This summer, Johnson is (extra) bulked up and portraying the mythical hero in "Hercules".
From his incredible wrestling lineage to his surprising NFL teammate, here are 29 things you probably don't know about Dwayne Johnson.
1. Dwayne Johnson was born May 2, 1972 in Hayward, California to Ata Maivia and Rocky Johnson, a professional wrestler.
2. Johnson's grandfather was also a professional wrestler, "High Chief" Peter Maivia, making The Rock a third-generation wrestler. In fact, he was the WWF's first third-generation wrestler, and was heavily hyped upon his professional arrival.

When wrestling fans think of The Rock (real name Dwayne Johnson) they think of all the success he had in a WWE ring and then his movie career. If you’re not a WWE fan then maybe you think of the movie career first because you don’t know too much about what he did in WWE. Those of us that watched him start in the mid 1990s and then become this sensation within a few years will never forget what he did in WWE.
He started in WWE in late 1996 with the company portraying him as this huge babyface star. They mentioned that he was a former football player that was the son of Rocky Johnson and grandson of “High Chief” Peter Maivia. Fans were receptive to him early on, but then they quickly booed him and chanted “Rocky Sucks” at him. As it turned out, that was the best thing for him.
