It’s the most exciting time of Charles Melton’s career — and he’s spent much of it asleep.
“There’s a lot of gratitude. I also never knew I was capable of taking so many naps in one day,” Melton says. “I’m just sleeping.”
Oh, don’t get him wrong: The past few weeks have seen a whirlwind of promotional work and accolades for the May December actor. The 32-year-old made kimchi for a New York Times profile, did spots on morning shows, humorously fumbled his Gotham Awards trophy,...

Any movie that gets made is nothing short of a small miracle, so when the final product is as unfathomably good as "May December," it's worth celebrating. Todd Haynes' newest film is a striking, discomforting story of an actor (Natalie Portman) shadowing the life of a woman (Julianne Moore) she'll be playing in a movie based on the woman's notorious marriage to the man she groomed when she was 36 and he was only 12. It's a ghastly situation loosely based on the real lives of Mary Kay Letourneau (Rip Bozo) and Vili Fualaau, presented in the beautifully complex and gasp-inducing melodrama that could only come from Todd Haynes. The score is perfect, the camera work is masterful, the acting performances are some of the best of the year, and Samy Burch's script is a revelation. And to think it all almost fell apart before it ever began.

Todd Haynes tells me that May December, his gripping melodrama starring Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, “aggressively disturbs our moral moorings.”
It’s true, and as I watched the movie — about a TV star (Portman) who arrives in Savannah, Georgia, to shadow the woman (Moore) at the center of a 20-year-old scandal — for a second time recently in Los Angeles, an image of Donald Trump popped uncomfortably into my head.
Moore plays Gracie, who had an intimate affair with a 13-year-old schoolboy two decades previously, when she was married with a family.
The added detail that they canoodled in a pet store made it perfect fodder to splash on tabloid front pages.
That Gracie went to jail and had the boy-teen’s child while incarcerated ensured coverage continued for weeks.
Two decades later, Gracie and Joe, the kid, now in his 30s, are married with three kids of their own,...

In advance of its Cannes premiere later this month, Todd Haynes’ latest film, “May December,” has released a first look at the new drama (via Variety).
The film, Haynes’ 10th feature, follows a pair of women (Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore) whose personal and professional lives begin to blur as they work together during the fraught production of a ripped-from-the-headlines love affair. Working from a Black List-touted script by Samy Burch with a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik, “May December” centers on a married couple whose lives begin to buckle under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a movie about their past — including the couple’s notorious May-December tabloid romance that once gripped the nation.
Per its official synopsis, the film is set “20 years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband Joe (23 years her junior) brace themselves for their twins to graduate from high school.

Variety has a first look at the anticipated Cannes Film Festival competition premiere “May December,” led by Oscar-winning heavyweights Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and directed by Todd Haynes.
The title, which is also for sale out of this year’s Marché du Film, represents a “Far From Heaven” reunion for Moore and Haynes and a significant breakout opportunity for “Riverdale” heartthrob Charles Melton.
Moore and Melton star as married couple whose 20-year relationship inspired a national tabloid obsession at its offset. Now preparing to send their grown children off to college – as Melton reconciles with empty nest syndrome in his mid-30s – an actress (Portman) embeds with the family to study them for an upcoming film where she’ll play Moore. The couple buckles under the pressure as Portman probes as deeply as she can for an honest performance.

“They say you can see the whole universe in opals, that’s how old they are.”
Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems will be available on 4k and Blu-ray November 23rd as part of The Criterion Collection
This jolt of pure cinematic adrenaline affirmed directors Josh and Benny Safdie as heirs to the gritty, heightened realism of Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes. Adam Sandler delivers an almost maniacally embodied performance as Howard Ratner, a fast-talking New York jeweler and gambler in relentless pursuit of the next big score. When he comes into possession of a rare opal, it seems Howard’s ship has finally come in—as long as he can stay one step ahead of a wife (Idina Menzel) who hates him, a mistress (Julia Fox) who can’t quit him, and a frenzy of loan sharks and hit men closing in on him. Wrapping a vivid look at the...

Over the years Shaka King was developing, writing, and struggling to get “Judas and the Black Messiah” made, a constant source of comfort was the promise of collaborating with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young. And then — scheduling conflicts.
“I had a relationship with Bradford,” said King. “So I would be working with one of the greatest cinematographers in the world, but also someone who was my friend. We were out to everybody, just trying to find a good replacement.”
What eased the sting? King’s agent told him Sean Bobbitt loved the script. “I’d never met Sean,” said King, who was surprised to have lured the Dp. “But I knew [his] work. ’12 Years a Slave’ is one of the best-looking movies of all time.”
King sat down in New York with Bobbitt, who was color timing his latest collaboration with Steve McQueen, “Widows.” They instantly clicked in how they saw “Judas.

Considering that Academy and guild members only had access to screen it immediately before the holidays and the fact it was only widely available on February 12, “Judas and the Black Messiah” has already had a remarkable late awards season run. Star Daniel Kaluuya has been nominated for every major award so far and took home both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor right in time for AMPAS voting.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

“Judas and the Black Messiah” premiered in theaters and on HBO Max on February 12 telling the true story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton (played by “Get Out” Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya), including how the FBI infiltrated the Panthers and ultimately assassinated him in 1969. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Oscar contenders from the film.
In addition to Hampton, the film tells the parallel story of William O’Neal, the petty criminal-turned-informant who betrayed him. He’s played by Lakeith Stanfield, who also appeared in “Get Out” with Kaluuya; they shared in a SAG Award nomination as members of the ensemble cast. Stanfield also earned a SAG ensemble nomination for his work in the FX comedy series “Atlanta,” an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his breakthrough performance in “Short Term 12” (2013) and a Gotham bid for his leading role in “Sorry to Bother You” (2018), but he has yet...

For “Judas and the Black Messiah” production designer Sam Lisenco and director Shaka King, “a big factor … in the development of the look of the movie was, how can we make this as truthful as possible, but keep in mind the kinds of action movies that make the medicine go down a little easy?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lisenco above.
“Judas” tells the true story of Chicago Black Panthers leader Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), who was assassinated by the FBI in 1969. But Lisenco and King wanted to create a look reminiscent not just of the history of Chicago in the 1960s, but of thrillers from the period like “The Hot Rocks” and “The Seven-Ups.” “If we started to explore those kinds of genre-normative cues, even subconsciously, we would be able to come up with a language that was much more entertaining while being as historically accurate as possible.

With “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Warner Bros. (and now HBO Max) has the makings of a dynamic and refreshing awards contender on their hands. Knowing the tastes of Oscar voters, including the newer members that have changed the landscape of nominees and winners in the past few years, it could rally support in all the major categories, including best picture, director (Shaka King), lead actor (Lakeith Stanfield), supporting actor (Daniel Kaluuya), supporting actress (Dominique Fishback), original screenplay, production design, cinematography (Sean Bobbitt), costume design (Charlese Antoinette Jones), film editing (Kristan Sprague), sound and original song.

Miranda July’s “Kajillionaire” is set in Los Angeles but doesn’t play out amid the glitz of Hollywood. The Focus Features film, which hits theaters Sept. 25, is about a family of grifters. Evan Rachel Wood plays Old Dolio, the daughter of parents (Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger) who have taught her the family trade: running scams to pay the bills. But her world changes when she meets an outsider, Melanie (“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez), who has been invited to take part in their biggest heist yet.
Production designer Sam Lisenco (last year’s “Uncut Gems”) points out that July’s locations were composed of “North Hollywood, the City of Industry and Vernon — all these subservient satellite regions of L.A.” For him and costume designer Jennifer Johnson, the family’s circumstances, as well as the instructions of the director, comprised the story’s focal points.
