He was the manager of Middlesbrough FC from 2001 to 2006.
On February 29th 2004, as manager he won Middlesbroughs first ever
major trophy, the Carling Cup, after over 128 years of waiting, beating
Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the final at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.
He became manager of the England national team in 2006, replacing Sven-Göran Eriksson, but was fired after England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
He was Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at Manchester United F.C. from 1999 to 2001.
In 2008, he became coach of FC Twente Enschede in the Netherlands. In season 2008/2009, he made FC Twente second in the Dutch National League.
