Lily James, Eddie Marsan and a bewhiskered Christopher Plummer star in the tale of Kaiser Wilhelm in Holland, 1940 – when the Nazis come to dinner
This resembles the crazed love child of ’Allo ’Allo! and Suite Française; it’s actually adapted from the 2003 novel The Kaiser’s Last Kiss by Alan Judd. We are in occupied Holland in 1940, where the abdicated German Kaiser is now living – played with much bewhiskered grumpiness by Christopher Plummer. Janet McTeer plays the prickly empress. With the Nazis now in charge, a decent Wehrmacht officer is put in charge of the Kaiser’s security, and this is Captain Stefan Brandt, played by Jai Courtney, who soon cops a couple of super-raunchy love scenes with the Kaiser’s comely Dutch maidservant Mieke, in which role Lily James talks about “sherving the Kaissher” in a Steve McClaren Dutch accent.
It all comes to a head when Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan) comes to dinner,...

It’s safe to say that this season has been a huge disaster for Newcastle United.
After spending £80 million on reinforcements, Steve McClaren’s spell on Tyneside was cut short, leaving Rafa Benitez to pick up the pieces at a team that is teetering on the edge of relegation.
Make no mistake about it, the team has massively underperformed, but that won’t stop the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Daryl Janmaat, Tim Krul, Gigi Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez being snapped up by potential suitors if the club goes down.
However, not everyone will be allowed – or even offered the chance – to leave the club, so many will have to ply their trade in England’s second tier. With it being made clear that there wasn’t any relegation clause written into the new signings’ contracts in January, the club’s hierarchy will be left footing a hefty...

Well, it’s eventually happened. Steve McClaren has been sacked.
In what was possibly the worst kept secret in football, Newcastle announced on Friday lunchtime that McClaren has been relieved of his duties at the club – and apologised for the way in which the dismissal was handled.
With the Magpies in free-fall recently, the decision to ditch the wally with the brolly may have come a few games too late in the eyes of many, but in Rafa Benitez, the Toon get a coach who will command the respect of the players who let his predecessor down so badly this season.
The likes of Moussa Sissoko and Fabricio Coloccini haven’t shown the commitment required to produce the results needed to keep the likes of John Carver and Steve McClaren in a job, but with such a vast – and successful – portfolio, there’s a real buzz...

It’s the trump card for any struggling manager: ‘We have injuries to key players’.
However, all being well, and if the warm weather training stint in La Manga goes to plan, Newcastle can expect to welcome back up to seven of their squad for their next game against Stoke City on March 2nd.
With the season’s end quickly approaching, it’s clear that the Magpies need all hands on deck during this crucial period and Steve McClaren – who was seen grinning like a Cheshire cat after the 5-1 drubbing at Chelsea – can hopefully have something worthwhile to smile about.
In recent games, the injury list has meant that some of the club’s youth have had a chance to get a taste of first-team life, but with none of them ever looking likely to get any game time, the return of the club’s...

After yet another shambolic display against Chelsea at the weekend, it may be time for Steve McClaren (or whoever is in charge by the time the Stoke game arrives) to make some bold changes.
Far too often this season the so-called big name players at the Magpies’ disposal have underperformed and looked extremely lacklustre, and the management team could do a lot worse than to introduce some fresh blood into the side.
Although the Premier League is an unforgiving league in which to learn your trade and the Under 21s aren’t exactly setting their own league alight – they have one win in their last five – one thing that is clear is the youth players would offer a lot more heart and desire than is currently being shown by certain members of the senior squad.

Steve McClaren told the Toon Army faithful to judge him after 10 games. They’ve long since been and gone – he only won one in that time – and he has since won only two of his last 10.
To put it simply, it’s not a good enough return for a manager who was allowed to spend more in the January transfer window than all the teams in Italy’s Serie A put together. Yes, players need time to gel – this time was afforded to the summer signings. Yes, we’ve had a lot of injuries – who hasn’t? (well, except high-flying Leicester). And yes, at times we’ve played well without getting anything from the game. But, enough is enough. There’s only 12 games left in the current Premier League season and if there’s one thing Mike Ashley cannot afford it’s another relegation.

Steve McClaren’s men might be a million miles away from earning ‘The Entertainers’ tag awarded to Kevin Keegan’s class of ’96, but there are a few rare gems in the current squad that wouldn’t look out of place in the grandad-collared wearing clan.
Not exactly known for his tactical prowess, King Kev was the master of getting the best out of his players without, well, doing too much. Certain fans will argue this is the polar opposite of Steve McClaren, who has a wealth of underachievers in his ranks.
With little in common, other than being part of the former England managers club, it’s clear that McClaren would love to have a few of the old guard at his disposal – Les Ferdinand, Philippe Albert and later Alan Shearer to name a few.
But who exactly would make the transition the other way? Who...

Spanish striker Ayoze Perez has signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle United, expected to last until 2021.
Having signed for the Magpies in 2014 for just under €2 million, his work rate and ability to come up with important goals have made him a fans favourite at St James’ Park.
And the news of a new deal will come as a relief to many supporters, with fears that the 22-year-old may be lured away to Manchester United or Tottenham.
Perez has scored 12 goals in 56 appearances since joining, despite being played out of position on the left wing for most of his time on Tyneside. With new signing Seydou Doumbia arriving on loan, and Aleksander Mitrovic settling in after a turbulent start to his career at the club, the Spaniard will be hoping to develop a partnership with either of the two.

Newcastle United have completed a £12 million deal for Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend.
The England international was pictured arriving at Newcastle Airport on Tuesday evening and spent the majority of Wednesday at United’s Benton training base completing his medical, before signing a five-and-a-half year deal.
The 24-year-old has been frozen out of the first team picture at White Hart Lane this season, turning out for Spurs’ U21 side over the last four months.
Townsend’s first team opportunities have been limited to a couple of Europa League outings and just 64 minutes of Barclays Premier League football this season. Although he has, somehow, remained a regular in the England squad under Roy Hodgson.
Newcastle’s need for some width has been apparent for some time. While Moussa Sissoko has the right winger role nailed down, United have tried many options down the left.

In football these days it’s not unusual for someone who had no success on the pitch to be a genius in the dugout. Many of the most successful managers in the modern game barely know how to kick a ball. Sir Alex Ferguson may have had a modestly successful career as a striker but the likes of Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson achieved nothing in the game before turning to management.
Why is that so many world class managers never played a high level, while so many world class players can’t seem to manage their way out of a paper bag? We may never know the reason, but maybe we can study the most egregious examples of managerial laughing stocks to find out why these legendary players failed so badly at management.

Papiss Cisse will undergo an operation on his groin injury in Paris, reports the Chronicle.
This will prolong his absence from the Newcastle first team with early estimates suggesting he could now be out for up to five weeks. That would likely see him miss 7 or 8 games, a huge run for Newcastle to be without their number 9 in their fight against relegation.
Cisse being on the sidelines heightens United head coach Steve McClaren’s urgency to purchase a new striker. Big question marks still surround Aleksandar Mitrovic’s ability to consistently put the ball in the back of the net, leaving only Ivan Toney (picked up from the lower leagues in the summer and severely lacking experience at this level) and Emmanuel Riviere (who has been sidelined through injury all season to date and had a torrid season last campaign with only one, scuffed, league...

Paul Dummett’s 90th minute deflected strike rescued a point for Newcastle, who are now within one point of 18th placed Swansea City in the Barclays Premier League relegation battle.
Wayne Rooney’s controversial penalty and Jesse Lingard’s neat finish put Man Utd 2-0 up on the night. However, the home side battled back thanks to an instinctive finish from Georginio Wijnaldum followed up by an Aleksandar Mitrovic spot kick.
Rooney’s second looked to have won it for Louis van Gaal’s side but Dummett salvaged the draw with what should be the best goal of his career.
The point, and three goals, represents a huge improvement for Steve McClaren’s men who had lost their previous four games by one goal to nil. It also represents an upturn in fortunes for Manchester United somewhat. Even though they surrendered a two-goal lead, they managed to...

Jonjo Shelvey will travel to Newcastle on Tuesday for a medical after the Magpies agreed a £12 million deal with relegation rivals Swansea City, according to reports.
The 23-year-old international midfielder had fallen down the pecking order in South Wales, but he looks set to get his career back on track and stake his claim to make England’s Euro 2016 squad.
The Magpies have already tied up a £5 million deal for French midfielder Henri Saivet as boss Steve McClaren looks to strengthen his squad in order to avoid the drop.
Shelvey will operate in the centre of midfield, throwing Cheick Tiote’s future into doubt, with some reports claiming that Shanghai Shenhua have tabled an £8 million bid for his services.
But regardless of what happens with Tiote, Newcastle have almost certainly got their man, Shelvey. The former-Liverpool academy product has been capped 6-times for England under Roy Hodgson,...

Perilously positioned in the relegation zone, Newcastle United have wasted no time at all in strengthening their squad. The long-term chase of Jonjo Shelvey looks to be nearing a conclusion, but first through the door is French midfielder Henri Saivet, arriving at the club today for something in the £4.5 million range.
A full Senegal international, Saivet was capped by France at almost every youth level before opting to represent the country of his birth. Despite being 25 years old, he has spent his entire professional career at Bordeaux, leaving only for the experience gained at a brief loan switch in lower league France. These are but the most basic of facts and, in the coming days, they’ll be trudged up in virtually every report. But, break the surface, and Saivet arguably poses as many questions to Newcastle fans as he does answers.

After the year Newcastle United have had on the pitch, you would have been forgiven for thinking that we’d be hard pressed to find five individual performances that were worth writing home about.
Despite Steve McClaren, his new backroom team, and over £50 million worth of signings heralding what we all thought was a new dawn at St James’ Park, Newcastle followed a worrying trend all year long that doesn’t look like leaving the squad any time soon.
There’s a losing mentality around NE1 at the moment. It’s solely in Mike Ashley’s hands whether that leaves or not. You don’t need me to tell you how he can do that…

West Ham striker Andy Carroll is a target for both Sunderland and former club Newcastle – and the Hammers would be willing to sell the hulking forward for £18million, according to reports from Shoot.co.uk.
Despite struggling with injuries, Carroll has recently returned to fitness and looks to be in good form, notching a goal in each of his last two league appearances (including an opportunistic headed winner against Southampton).
Both Newcastle and Sunderland are struggling through a difficult Premier League campaign, currently sitting in 18th and 19th place respectively. Of the two teams, the Magpies have struggled to find the net most, with strikers Aleksander Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez, and (now-injured) Papiss Cisse struggling to find the net on a regular basis.
Sunderland are a slightly different kettle of fish, and have benefitted immensely from the goalscoring instincts of veteran frontman Jermain Defoe. However, a successful...

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have been offered the chance to resign Loic Remy on loan for the rest of the season. The 29-year-old is being mooted as a quick fix option for January, as the Magpies look to add to their poor goals tally and even poorer league position.
But would it really be the right decision?
At 29, Remy isn’t exactly a spring chicken, and though he’s still looked sharp when he’s got playing time for Chelsea, he’s not playing all that regularly and Newcastle would run the risk of waiting for him to get back to sharpness. That’s arguably better than looking to sign a young European striker with no experience of the Premier League, but it’s still something of a gamble.
At this stage, the options for Newcastle are being suggested as Charlie Austin, someone unknown who...

If there’s one thing we can gleam from Steve McClaren inexplicably fielding the same 11 on Monday just two days after a gruelling 90 minutes against Everton, it’s that he doesn’t believe he has an actual squad of players at Newcastle United he can trust.
The game after the boxing day fixtures is historically the match where you would usually rotate but it saw the likes of Florian Thauvin, Siem De Jong, Cheick Tiote and Yoan Gouffran stationary on the bench at the first whistle, and you just have to wonder if McClaren has given up on anyone outside his first 11-13 men.
Against Arsenal today, the safe bet would once again be on Newcastle being unchanged though McClaren is forced into one move with a hamstring injury seeing Vurnon Anita sidelined, with Tiote expected to be his replacement. Rob Elliott is also a huge...

Newcastle will make a £15 million+ move for in-form Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi in the January transfer window, reports The Sun.
Talks are said to already been underway with the French club over bringing the 22-year-old Belgium international to St. James’ Park.
Batshuayi has enjoyed a wonderful season in Ligue 1 with 11 goals in 18 starts. Joining from Standard Leige just 18 months ago, the forward has an impressive tally of averaging a goal in every other game. It’s a run of form that has convinced Geordie boss Steve McClaren that he’s the man Newcastle should spend big on to get the goals that would avoid relegation.
With that lethal combination of pace, strength and composure in front of goal, Batshuayi has overshadowed Marseille star man and former Newcastle target Alexandre Lacazette in the goals department and is getting all the attention from European clubs.

With talk in the media this weekend being about how decisions Newcastle United will make in the January transfer window ultimately being the key in deciding whether The Magpies stay up and avoid relegation this season… is an actual bigger decision for owner Mike Ashley than what players he should sign, being overshadowed?
Is in fact his biggest decision being whether Steve McClaren is the right man to steer his club to safety?
Ashley was unusually loyal to McClaren’s predecessor Alan Pardew. No matter how bad results got, no matter how loud the fan backlash was, no matter how close United looked on verge of oblivion with another relegation – he stood by his manager until that man eventually jumped ship for pastures new. Previous to that, Ashley wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger if things weren’t going well… Sam Allardyce famously lasting less...

With their aerial defensive frailties once again on display in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to West Brom, Newcastle United are today being linked with a new giant centre-half.
A report in the Daily Mirror (via Teamtalk) claims that McClaren is eying 6 foot 5 inches tall Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly as a January transfer window acquisition.
The 24-year-old Sengalese international has been in terrific form this season, helping Napoli become surprise Serie A challenges, currently sitting pretty only one point behind leaders Inter Milan at almost the half way stage of the season.
Reports suggest Koulibaly has an £8 million transfer fee release clause and Geordie boss Steve McClaren is keen to trigger it, pushing through a deal for the new defender to add much needed physical presence and competition alongside Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba.
Koulibaly had been a target for Norwich City over the summer but a...

When Newcastle United fans sing Auld Lang Syne on the stroke of midnight Thursday, they may well reflect back on 2015 as being one of the worst years in the modern history of Newcastle United.
Two utterly clueless teams fielded under respective head coaches John Carver and Steve McClaren (both of whom had different philosophies on how their teams should play that were both remarkably as inept as each other… but hey remember, they are world class and experienced coaches) have seen Newcastle end the 2014/15 season surviving relegation by the skin of their teeth and that same outcome for the 2015/16 season looking like the absolute best the club can hope for.
Rewind the clock just 12 months and Newcastle were sitting pretty in 10th and even talking up Europe as a possibility (Carver even having the gall to suggest Champions League was a realistic target during his introductory...

Newcastle United won a game of football. Steve McClaren saved his job for another week.
That’s all that matters.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s cross-cum-shot that deflected off Martin Skrtel and into the roof of the Liverpool net, and sumptuous chip with what as almost the last kick of the game, was the difference on an ugly afternoon at St James’ Park.
With just two wins in the Barclays Premier League so far this season, Steve McClaren was desperate for a victory against Liverpool to silence the boo boys at St James’ Park.
Last weekend’s 5-1 humiliation away at former manager Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace meant Magpies headed into the game second bottom of the league. Bournemouth’s shock win away at reigning Champions Chelsea last night meant this encounter had more than a whiff of must win – or perhaps must not lose – about it.

Did that really just happen? A free-flowing Newcastle United scored six on a glorious afternoon at St James’ Park.
Four goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, and one a piece from Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic saw Newcastle romp home after Norwich gave them a couple of nervous moments in the first half.
United started on the front foot early on with Moussa Sissoko – who has been made to look ever so slightly delusional by his Champions League related comments in recent times – was at the forefront of all things good for Steve McClaren’s men. He was tireless and popped up all over the shop, dragging his teammates up the park on numerous occasions. Norwich were restricted to a couple of dangerous set pieces, which Rob Elliot dealt with easily, and a 30-yard Robbie Brady strike.

The inquest into Newcastle United’s capitulation at The Etihad Stadium last weekend continues to rumble on. However, the reason for The Magpies’ second half collapse has been staring us all in the face for some time…
Steve McClaren’s hair is to blame, and here’s why…
No one knows what was said in that United dressing room at half time; although we can surmise that Steve doused the majority of his squad in booze and sleeping pills at the very least as the Magpies proceeded to stop everything they did so well in the first period.
Standing at around 5 ft 10 inches tall Steve isn’t the tallest guy around, so one thing we can guarantee is that his team talk was conducted with the entire squad up on their feet. Why? Because they followed a tactical framework that mother nature has laid upon the former England manager’s bonce.

To steal a phrase from page one of Michael Owen’s book of Premier League cliches, yesterday’s matchup between Newcastle United and Manchester City was a game of two halves.
The first period saw the away side well on top. The black and whites continued with their new fearlessly bullish approach that worked so well against champions Chelsea a week prior. Steve McClaren’s side weathered an early storm to take the lead through a stooping Aleksandar Mitrovic header. They should have doubled their lead but a tap in for the Serbian was wrongly ruled offside, before the 21-year-old had a one-on-one brilliantly saved by the toe-end of Joe Hart.
All was going well.
One thing I noticed sitting in the Etihad’s press box was how United’s touchline management team of McClaren and Paul Simpson were conducting their business.

Well that all escalated very quickly. No sooner had Newcastle United resurfaced for the second half with the scores all level – after a very industrial, yet classy first period where they even took the lead – they were 4-1 down and out of the game.
Five goals from Sergio Aguero swayed the tide in Manchester City’s favour after United, rather sickeningly after what happened in the second half, could have easily been a few goals up in the first half.
New signing Aleksandar Mitrovic – who opened the scoring with a stooping header early on after great work from Kevin Mbabu and Georginio Wijnaldum – could have had a first half treble after a tap in was wrongly ruled out for offside, before a glorious chance save by the toe-end of Joe Hart thwarted him once again.
Those misses cost United as City equalised in the moments leading up to half time.

Since Mike Ashley bought Sir John Hall’s 41.6% stake in Newcastle United back in 2007, the club has become a grim prospect for any Football Manager enthusiast to start their virtual life at. We all enjoy an FM challenge but every year Newcastle have a squad full of bang average players, no money and unrealistic expectations, making the gaming experience at St James’ Park extremely unpleasant.
This year’s game has the potential to be different. There is a renewed philosophy on Tyneside and no longer will you be set the awkward task of taking on a sombre Alan Pardew side or a perplexed John Carver outfit. Trying to restore and motivate Newcastle United over the past four year’s (and probably a lot longer) has been like asking a London Marathon finisher if he fancies going for a jog eight minutes after finishing the 26.2 miles.

You have purchased your copy of FIFA 16 and you’re booting up with Newcastle United football club. Steve McClaren is no more; you’re the new gaffa on Tyneside. You have met your staff and players and are quickly labelled as “one of the most promising new managers in football”. Good luck.
Life at St James’ Park isn’t easy. Many have tried, most have failed and few have enjoyed their stay in the North East. It’s time to show the fans what it’s like to have a manager that truly cares about their team and demonstrate how your dexterous fingertips can lead them to glory. But where do you start?
Despite the media labelling your appointment as “surprising” you have beaten a number of managers to the post and Mike Ashley has reiterated his belief that your leadership and determination can bring Newcastle the success...

It was a strange atmosphere prior to kick off at St James’ Park as a deflated Newcastle United faced a freshly blown up Chelsea.
The Magpies’ pre-match atmospheric video broke a deathly silence that swiftly returned upon its completion. The stadium announcer’s war-cry of “Lets Make Some Noise For Newcastle United” was met with a eery knee-pat, resembling the latter stages of a charity raffle.
Presumably Newcastle’s defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup had spooked the Geordie fan-base but the Magpies’ thrilling start turned up the volume as Steve McClaren’s 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 formation with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez up front gave Jose Mourinho’s side some early problems.
Kevin Mbabu’s fearless, energetic and unfazed workmanship (or a severe mid-week telling off) lifted the whole team and made them unrecognisable from the side (and support...

“Oh for gods sake Florian” shouted Steve McClaren as Florian Thauvin misplaced his forth pass in just 28 minutes at St James’ Park where Newcastle United faced Championship side Sheffield Wednesday (who rested 10 first team players) in the Capital One Cup.
The Magpies’ boss then turned round in disgust and slumped back onto the bench shaking his head and muttering expletives to himself. It’s an all to familiar scenario and I’m unsure as to what McClaren’s thinking is behind it. Since the opening day of the season, the former Derby boss has flamboyantly swung his arms around the dugout and thrown a few f-bombs into the wind but rather than it demonstrate an intimate passion for the game it appears more like a non-football fan trying to fit in at the local boozer as his pals try to concentrate on what is actually happening.

After a featherweight performance against West Ham United, Steve McClaren’s Newcastle side were in need of a tactical reshuffle. Mid-week, the former Derby boss had admitted that he was still unsure of his best eleven and hinted that Vurnon Anita could lose his place as Watford visited St James’ Park.
His subtle remarks proved accurate and the Dutch international was replaced by Ayoze Perez with Georginio Wijnaldum being deployed alongside Jack Colback in the middle of midfield. Or so we thought. As the Magpies kicked off, it became apparent that McClaren was experimenting with a needlessly complicated 4-1-4-1 formation that saw Wijnaldum and Sissoko rotate (very unsuccessfully) the anchorman role; something that as far as I’m aware has never happened in the history of football.
The system looked ugly, undisciplined and desperate and Newcastle were 2-0 down at half time. Like...

A brace from Dimitri Payet saw West Ham United ease to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Upton Park.
The attacker – who joined The Hammers for £10 million from Marseille during the summer transfer window – opened the scoring with an unstoppable curled effort from the edge of the area into Tim Krul’s top right-hand corner, before adding a second three minutes after the restart following a bar shattering effort from debutant Victor Moses.
The evening was a sorry one for Steve McClaren and his Magpies. The last time these two sides met the scenario was slightly different. Newcastle United were ninety minutes away from relegation should they drop points against the Hammers and Hull managed to beat Manchester United at the Kc Stadium.
Tonight, things were different. Both sides have had a face lift, they’ve injected a large helping of transfer window botox into their vulnerable areas and taken their bleak, pale and ageing managers for a more vibrant spray tan. Yet, as West Ham United revelled in their rejuvenated healthy glow, Newcastle seemed overcooked with large patches of dry, uninspiring football and two holding midfielder’s and a right-back who appeared agonised by a Dmitri Payet-shaped blister.
The Magpies’ performance longed for a midfield general, a 2011-12 Cheick Tiote or at the very least someone who doesn’t get away with being constantly four-yards behind the ball simply because he was born in Gateshead.

We’ve all had a week away from transfer rumours, fees and hearing what Charlie Austin had for breakfast therefore surely it’s time to have a little natter about what’s going to happen in January?
What? You preferred your new-found peaceful lifestyle that simply involved watching the players that Newcastle United currently own? Don’t be so stupid. It’s boring, you need a dose of speculation, a sign of what is to come in the future and how you should prepare for another new arrival on Tyneside in 2016.
Managing Director, Lee Charnley’s recent statement revealed that Newcastle will keep on spending and promised that there will be more signings next year. The likelihood of another £50 million being spent in January is extremely slim but with a number of high calibre players entering the last six months of their current deal the Magpies may be tempted to have a little flutter.

Newcastle United are yet to win a Premier League match under Steve McClaren and currently sit 19th in the table with two points from four games.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has predicted that the Magpies will struggle again this season and believes they will finish in 15th place come the end of May.
It’s tough to make an accurate prediction so early in the season but it does seem that Merson thinks both of the North East teams will struggle as he’s placed Sunderland in the bottom three.
Merson said:

Charlie Austin has confirmed that he still wants to play in the Premier League and will move if the right club comes in for him, according to the Independent.
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with the Queens Park Rangers striker this summer but decided to not pay the £15 million asking price as the club had concerns about Austin’s injury problems.
The frontman ended up staying at the Championship club but it’s thought that Steve McClaren is still interested in signing the English forward and the player hasn’t ruled out a future move.

Adam Armstrong has won the League one player of the month award for August after the Newcastle loanee scored five goals in five games for Coventry.
Armstrong scored a brace on the first game of the season against Wigan and then followed that up against Millwall where he bagged another two goals, helping Coventry to a fifth place position in League One.
The hope is that Steve McClaren can integrate Armstrong into his set-up at the end of the season and he can use his lower division experience to begin to compete at the top level.

Newcastle United are not yet finished in the transfer window with five players set to leave on loan, according to the Northern Echo.
Steve McClaren has five players currently on the loan list including, Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran, Gael Bigirimana, Rob Elliot and Curtis Good who could all leave for Championship clubs.
The Football League loan window is due to open on September 9th and will shut on November 25th. This gives team in the lower leagues a chance to strengthen their sides if they have injury problems.
Williamson was rumoured to be on his way out of Tyneside on transfer deadline day but despite interest from Brighton a deal did not materialise. It’s likely that he will be offered to Chris Hughton’s side again as part of a loan deal.
Yoan Gouffran is wanted by Hull City and McClaren will also look to offload Elliot,...

It’s always hard to analysis a team’s performance when they’re forced to play with ten men for 75 minutes but the overall reflection on Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal has remained largely positive. Steve McClaren praised the attitude and workmanship of his side during his post-game comments yet his subtle frustrations lingered on the end of every biting syllable as the Magpies’ boss reflected on Aleksandar Mitrovic’s early dismissal and another Premier League defeat.
Despite the excellent atmosphere inside St James’ Park the overall game was underwhelming and aside from the gutsy endeavour and occasional late-tackle from Newcastle, there wasn’t really anything to cheer about. Andre Marriner’s shambolic refereeing display prompted plenty of negative noise from the home support and although his decision to send off Mitrovic seemed just about fair his trigger-happy card display from start to finish was embarrassing.

Newcastle United’s crucial fixture against West Ham on the 24th May marked the end of John Carver’s Magpies career but it also signified a new era on Tyneside. Managerial changes are common in football but it’s rare that you have to reinstate supporters’ faith, confidence and enjoyment of watching the beautiful game over a three month period.
Has Mike Ashley done that? To an extent he probably has. The owner’s perturbing interview with Sky Sports prior to the fateful ‘Survival Sunday’ outlined Ashley’s normally-muted intentions and sent shivers through fans’ chests as the shrewd businessman declared he wasn’t going anywhere until Newcastle had won a trophy.
‘That’s that then’, most fans sulked as they prepared to die with Ashley at the helm. But the owner for once reacted to the criticisms that questioned the club’s philosophy and ambition.

Newcastle United new boy, Florian Thauvin stays behind after training to practise free kicks and doesn’t stop until he has taken the perfect delivery, according to the Daily Mirror.
The French midfielder grabbed three assists on his home debut for the Magpies and two came from beautifully taken set-piece deliveries which found the head of Siem de Jong and Mike Williamson.
Newcastle have lacked a free kick taker for a while now and his effective deliveries will be extremely beneficial to Steve McClaren who has already praised Thauvin’s ability, stating his crosses are “vital” to the team.
The 22-year-old told the Daily Mirror:
“I work very hard every single day to try and achieve the perfect free kick – and I don’t stop until I have got it right.
“Since I was a kid, free-kicks have been something I have worked at. I love...

Newcastle United midfielder Haris Vuckic has signed a new contract at Newcastle United but will be loaned out to Wigan Athletic for the remainder of the current season, according to Sky Sports.
Vuckic was impressive during his loan spell at Rangers in the Scottish Championship last season and was linked with Greek champions Olympiakos during the summer.
A side who feature in the Champions League on a regular basis were keen on taking Vuckic to Greece, yet the Magpies could not even find a place in their struggling squad for the midfielder last season.
Vuckic was extremely impressive throughout his time in Scotland – with the 22-year-old Slovenian international having scored nine goals and contributed three assists in 18 matches from attacking-midfield.
Since moving to Rangers on transfer deadline day in January, the midfielder has once more struggled to find a place in Steve McClaren’s squad but...

Tottenham Hotspur could make a bid for Newcastle United’s Cheick Tiote, according to the Evening Standard.
Reports state that the North London club have made an enquiry for the defensive midfielder.
Mauricio Pochettino was hoping to bring in Zenit St Petersburg’s Axel Witsel but it seems the move has broken down as the Russian side priced their star midfielder at €100 million.
Tiote is no longer a key player at St James’ Park and despite still being not fully fit, Steve McClaren seems to prefer Vurnon Anita and Jack Colback.
The Ivorian has been on the bench for Newcastle this season but has lacked quality when called upon. A move to North London could see Tiote given a first-team place and regain the impressive form he showed two years ago.

Newcastle are attempting to sign Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt before the end of the transfer window, according to the Mirror.
Steve McClaren was hoping to sign another player before the end of the day but Whites’ owner Massimo Cellino is apparently unwilling to sell the 20-year-old.
Mowatt who can play as a central midfielder or on the wing scored nine Championship goals last season and is thought to be valued at £8 million.
Due to Cellino’s reluctance, the Magpies may have to renew their interest in January as the summer transfer window closes in the next seven hours.
Mowatt has two years left on his deal and Leeds are keen to tie him down on a new deal – along with fellow Newcastle United target, Sam Byram.
