Award-winning artist Justin Anderson’s debut feature “Swimming Home” has its world premiere in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam. Variety has secured access to the first clip from the film.
The film, an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s 2012 Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel, centers on poet Joe (Christopher Abbott) and war photographer Isabel (Mackenzie Davis), whose marriage is dying when Kitti (Ariane Labed), a naked stranger found floating in the pool at their sunny holiday villa in Greece, is invited to stay. Oscar nominated Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki plays a significant role in the film as does emerging actor Freya Hannan-Mills.
In 2014, Anderson directed “Jumper,” a short inspired by Pasolini’s “Teorema,” about a man emerging from a pool and standing naked in the window during a family dinner. A friend saw the film and suggested that he read Levy’s novel. The book resonated with Anderson and he contacted Levy.

Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) debate their opposing views on religion verses reason on the verge of World War II, in Freud’S Last Session.
Freud’S Last Session is based on the stage play of the same name, in which the now-elderly famous Dr. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, invites the much younger professor C. S. Lewis, a rising Oxford don who will write the Narnia book series, into his home in London, to which the Jewish doctor fled ahead of Hitler’s invading troops from his native Vienna. On the brink of Britain’s entry into WW II, these two intellectual giants meet for the first time and discuss a range of philosophical topics, including the existence...

Updated, 11:34 a.m.: Sony Pictures Classics has firmed up release plans for its drama Freud’s Last Session, starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode, which charts the relationship between psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and author C.S. Lewis. Based on the stage play by Mark St. Germain, who wrote the script, the film opens in theaters in New York and L.A. December 22, with an expansion to follow in January.
The move positions the pic to open opposite A24’s wrestling drama The Iron Claw, Searchlight’s romantic drama All of Us Strangers, MGM’s buzzy festival title American Fiction, and Uni and Illumination’s original animated pic Migration.
Matt Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) served as the film’s director. In addition to North America, SPC is distributing in the Middle East, India, Eastern Europe (excluding Russia) and Turkey, and on airlines worldwide. Read more about the project below.

2018 honestly feels like a whole lifetime ago. The world was certainly in a much different place. Horror fans were eager to witness the next chapter in the beloved Halloween saga, spearheaded by the Pineapple Express folks. We’d finally gotten a sequel to The Strangers, though horror had been cycling through its latest in a seemingly long series of those Insidious flicks. Films like Mandy and Luca Guadagino’s Suspiria were on the horizon.
Now, just as we’re barely halfway through 2023, horror fans are eager to witness the next chapter in The Exorcist franchise, spearheaded by the Pineapple Express folks. There’s a new addition to the Insidious franchise out now, and. Uhm. Well – time is certainly a flat circle.
Nevertheless, looking back now – it feels as though horror was at the precipice of a massive shift. It geared toward a new direction in storytelling and filmmaking that set...

“He’s sick in the head. He’s not well.”
That’s Emma Stone talking about Joaquin Phoenix’s character in Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid,” which surprise-screened for public and press at the Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn on Saturday, April 1. Fitting, because as an April Fool’s joke, distributor A24 in partnership with the theater chain billed the event as a “Midsommar” director’s cut, before bait-and-switching with the first-ever screening of Ari Aster’s nightmare comedy starring Phoenix as a guilty and repressed man on a deranged odyssey to reunite with his mother.
But Stone is also describing the film’s director, the mind behind “Hereditary” and “Midsommar.” Though she’s never worked with him, Stone was there as a surprise moderator for the event — which Joaquin Phoenix, down to skin and bones and still in “Joker 2” character mode, briefly introed — alongside Ari Aster, who said it...

Florian Teichtmeister, the Austrian actor who recently rose to international prominence for his performance as Emperor Franz Joseph in the Oscar-shortlisted film “Corsage,” has been charged with possession of child pornography. The news was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter.
Austrian authorities reportedly found over 58,000 digital images of sexualized minors in Teichtmeister’s possession. The pornographic content featured participants that were as young as 14 years old.
In a statement, Teichtmeister’s lawyer Michael Rami said that the actor plans to plead guilty to all charges. “He confessed throughout the investigation and always cooperated with the authorities,” Rami said. His trial is set to begin on February 8, and could result in a prison sentence of up to two years. IndieWire has reached out to Teichtmeister’s representatives for further comment.

Love Actually is back on our TV screens for Christmas, and it’s reminded us of something we learned about the film back in 2015.
Director Richard Curtis’ wife – scriptwriter, author and broadcaster Emma Freud – live-tweeted a midnight screening of the film she was watching with her family.
By doing so, she revealed a lot of detail about the film that viewers probably won’t have known before.
One of those revelations was what happens to Karen and Harry, played by Emma Thompson and the late Alan Rickman, after the film ended.
In the film, the audience can only watch on as Harry, who has two children with his wife Karen, engages in a flirtation with his secretary Mia (Heike Makatsch), and later decides to buy her a gold necklace for Christmas.
Karen accidentally discovers the necklace and thinks it’s for her, only to realise the heartbreaking truth when he...

If your stance is, rightly, that Marilyn Monroe was a kind of genius, an actress for whom the status of sex symbol comes with an asterisk, because she was not helplessly beholden to her iconic image — not merely a slave to the culture’s open-flied erotic hunger, not simply the fatuous, buxom blonde many mistook her to be, but rather an extremely savvy engineer of her own persona, a witty, whip-smart, and self-aware talent for whom the culture’s low expectations proved an opportune plaything instead of a hard limit...

80-year-old American director Walter Hill can lay claim to have invented at least two movie genres: the street gang film — with the seminal 1979 action thriller The Warriors — and the buddy cop movie with the 1982 Eddie Murphy/Nick Nolte hit 48 Hours. As a producer, Hill was behind Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking sci-fi horror blockbuster Alien and its franchise’s spin-offs, including the three Aliens sequels and the Scott-directed Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017).
But Hill’s first love is the Western. He’s explored the lives of Wild West legends Jesse James (in 1980s The Long Riders), Wild Bill Hickok (1995’s Wild Bill) and Geronimo (1993’s Geronimo: An American Legend) and turned Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, the inspiration for Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western classic A Fistful of Dollars, into 1995 Prohibition era oater Last Man Standing.

Opening with a clip 0f Donald Trump is a rare unwise choice made in “The March on Rome,” the latest film from Irish author and documentarian Mark Cousins. That’s not because Trump isn’t a fascist (where you have been?), it’s just that Cousins can, and will, tell the story of far-right politics’ inherent illusions — spring-boarding off Mussolini’s famous, semi-fictional voyage 100 years ago in October — with a little more grace than that.
Maybe grace isn’t the point. “A Noi!” (“To Us”) made for newsreels nationwide, Cousins entertainingly brings history, cinema, and the manipulative power of the movies together in just the way we’ve come to expect from him. If you’re at all intrigued by a movie called “The March on Rome,” you won’t be disappointed.

Depressed therapist meets obsessed patient with homicidal tendencies. What could go wrong?
That’s the device in the new limited series “The Patient,” from “The Americans” showrunners Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg with Chris Long as the series director. Over ten short episodes, widower Dr. Alan Strauss (Steve Carrell) treats high functioning serial killer Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) in his Los Angeles office. The tension escalates when Sam abducts Strauss, taking the good doctor home for intensive daily therapy – and shackling the shrink to the bed.
Can their discussions in the remote basement in-law apartment strangle Sam’s demons? Will Dr. Strauss emerge victorious, unscathed and with the subject of a mind-blowing memoir? We shall see.
This “Hannibal” set up, the dramatic but artificial precipitating event, seems like a long way to go to drill down into what makes killer and healer tick.

One of the key character traits of snotty college duo Olivia (Sydney Sweeney) and Paula (Brittany O’Grady) on HBO’s “The White Lotus” is their choice of poolside reading material. They’re skimming through Nietzsche and Freud when not casting side eye and throwing withering commentary about the people around them.
Later, they also pick up Frantz Fanon, Camille Paglia and Aimé Césaire. But Sweeney, speaking Saturday at the Atx TV Festival in Austin, revealed something more about that character: She believes it’s all an act. “Oh, she was not actually reading any of these books,” Sweeney told moderator Danielle Turchiano.
Sweeney said that that at the very least she was excited to read those books on set — only to learn they were props. “They were blank!” she said. The overall series experience, especially the show’s heavy dose of humor, was a delight for the actor. ““Jennifer Coolidge...

Jerry Goldsmith, the legendary composer whose diverse, long, and prolific career included some of the most famous themes of the last fifty years, died in his sleep Wednesday night in Beverly Hills, after a long battle with cancer. He was 75. Goldsmith was nominated for 17 Academy Awards, winning his sole Oscar for The Omen, as well as 5 Emmys, including the theme for Star Trek: Voyager. Goldsmith's career began in the early 1950s with the nascent television medium and continued virtually non-stop, until his illness forced him to abandon appearances and offers for more work. Born in 1929, Goldsmith was a classically trained musician, who learned from pianist Jakob Gimpel, as well as guitarist and film composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. With his diverse background Goldsmith wrote effectively for nearly every genre imaginable but seemed particularly adept at crafting original work for science fiction, suspense, and adventure films. That held true for both television and film. His TV work included the themes to The Waltons, Dr. Kildaire, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and original music for The Twilight Zone and Gunsmoke. Films afforded him a broader canvas and Goldsmith took advantage of it with his work on Freud (his first Oscar nomination), Lillies of the Field, Von Ryan's Express, and The Sand Pebbles. His garish, brassy score for Planets of the Apes, which he conducted at one point wearing an ape mask, earned him his fourth nomination. His score for Patton, full of memorable marches, included the ingenious and indelible device of a short trumpet triplet to indicate the famous WWII general's recollection of his past lives as a warrior (it was also famously spoofed in a Simpsons episode). Roman Polanski's harsh city in Chinatown was given a smoky noir glow from Goldsmith's score. It was for his work on The Omen, arguably one of the best horror scores ever written, that Goldsmith received his only Academy Award. Suffused with Latin chanting and fierce, driving themes, it is often repurposed or imitated today. Goldsmith also liberated the "Star Trek" franchise from its small-set roots with his rapturous, almost nautical, score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The theme for the film became the new theme for the following films as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation. It will probably be the most lasting evidence of Jerry Goldsmith's long and successful career. Goldsmith is survived by his wife, Carol; five children, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
