Rocketed to stardom and music industry after winning the first prize at
an amateur creative singing contest in 1975 in Hong Kong with a
self-composed English song "Dark Side of Your Mind". She also wrote the
lyrics.
At the age of 19 in 1976, she won the leading actress award of Golden
Horse Film Festival, Taiwan. She is so far the youngest winner with the
shortest screen life (seven years) in the Festival's history. The movie
was "Qiu Xia" (Chelsia My Love) which is also her own birth name. The
lyrics of the theme song "By Chance" are adapted from a poem of the
same name of the famous Mainland Chinese poet Xu Zhimo. She composed
the music adding a short piece of Franz Schubert's serenade. She was
also the vocalist of it.
Her manager was gunned down during a USA tour shortly before she got
married.
Alan Tam was one of the best men of her wedding. Alan Tam and Kenny Bee
were members of the greatly successful group "The Wynners" in the 70s.
Her spouse is presently the chairman of National Economic Development
Committee (Malaysia) and the President of the Associated Chinese
Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM).
