Lord Stanley was born on January 15, 1841 in London, England, UK. He was married to Constance Villiers. He died on June 14, 1908 in Lancashire, England, UK.
Hockey's Stanley Cup is named for him. It was his idea to present a
trophy to the top amateur Canadian team. It was first awarded in 1893
and has been presented to the champion of the National Hockey League
since the 1925-1926 season.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 (charter class) in the
"builders" category.
