Bjørn Elmquist
A well-known Danish politician, journalist and lawyer. After graduating
law school in 1963 he worked in the Danish civil service until shifting
to a reporting career for Danmarks Radio in 1971. He was the station's
European Community reporter from 1971 to 1979, stationed in Brussels
1973-1976. He then achieved election for the Danish parliament for the
Venstre party from 1979 to 1990. He fell out with the party and took
membership with party Det Radikale Venstre while he was still in
parliament, then lost his mandate in the elections a few months later.
Between 1991 and 1994 he did work for Danmarks Radio again and chaired
the Danish department of Amnesty International 1992-1994. He achieved
re-election to parliament in 1994 for Det Radikale Venstre. In 1998 he
shifted to another career as a practising attorney. He has published
numerous books and served as a columnist for several major newspapers.
In later years he became famous for being the defence lawyer of
certain persons accused of terrorism.
