Greg Berlanti and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to empower bloodsucking diversity with Dracula series The Brides
The weird sisters of Bram Stoker's Dracula are doing it for themselves. Greg Berlanti and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who brought the devil out of Riverdale to spawn Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, got an order from ABC to shoot a pilot for The Brides, according to Variety.
According to its official synopsis The Brides will be "a sexy, contemporary reimagining of the Dracula saga as a family drama with a trio of powerful, diverse female leads. With strong horror elements, The Brides is a vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy—and their non-traditional family."
The project goes back to 2015, when NBC put in an order for a script. For ABC's desanguinated re-incarnation, the script will be written by Aguirre-Sacasa, who will executive produce alongside...

Katey Sagal and Courteney Cox will join “Shameless” for its upcoming ninth season.
Sagal is set to recur on the Showtime comedy as Ingrid Jones, a crazed psych patient that Frank (William H. Macy) encounters in the E.R., and with whom he is immediately smitten. Cox will guest star as Jen Wagner, a famous actress who’s had a problem in the past with booze. Lip (Jeremy Allen White) is hired as her sober companion when she’s in town, and she takes him on a wild ride in search of a cocktail.
Sagal received four Golden Globe nominations for her role as Peg Bundy on Fox’s “Married With Children,” before winning the Globe for best actress in a drama series for her performance as Gemma Teller Morrow on “Sons of Anarchy.” Her credits also include “Futurama,” “Superior Donuts,” “Dirty Dancing,” “The Bastard Executioner,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Pitch Perfect 2,...

Natasha Henstridge is set for a lead role opposite Vinessa Antoine in CBC’s Diggstown drama series created by Floyd Kane (Across the Line).
Written by Kane, Diggstown is set in the gritty arena of legal aid. It centers on Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star lawyer who reconsiders her priorities after her beloved aunt commits suicide following a malicious prosecution. Landing at a legal aid office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Marcie is driven by one thing – to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
The team of lawyers that Marcie works with are a curious band of do-gooders, cynics and scrappers – messy souls struggling to keep personal disappointment and demons out of their practice as they work directly in the community to find justice for their diverse clients, exploring issues of racism, poverty and gender bias.

More than a century after Arthur Conan Doyle published the first Sherlock Holmes novel in 1887, the detective lives on with a film franchise starring Robert Downey Jr., a PBS series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and now Elementary, CBS' modern retelling of the crime-solving legend.

Elementary presents a Sherlock (Eli Stone's Jonny Lee Miller) who is a recovering addict and consultant for the NYPD. His distaff Watson (Lucy Liu) is a former surgeon who becomes Sherlock's "sober companion."

The major networks all seem to agree on one major idea when it comes to sci-fi programming. Mainly, that’s the idea that it doesn’t seem to work. Terra Nova was canceled after just one season and discussion on the fate of Fringe seems to be generating more interest than the show itself. Flashforward barely made it through a season and no one seems optimistic about Alcatraz. It almost seems to beg the question. What is so broken with big network sci-fi?
While in some cases, it’s the actual shows, the real problem, in my opinion, is the networks themselves. Every new TV season, I get hopeful because it seems like there are at least one or two shows that will let me get my sci-fi fix in and make my inner cheese-monster deliriously happy. Then, the shows debut and I watch them. My usual policy is to...

Johnny Lee Miller will play Sherlock Holmes in the CBS TV Studios pilot Elementary, a U.S. rip-off of the BBC series Sherlock that updates the super sleuth detective to a modern day setting. Though this time instead of London it’s a contemporary New York.
The former Eli Stone and Trainspotting star is British (which at least will pour cold water on some of the boiling fury from those who were expecting an American ‘Who’) most recently, in great irony, starred in Danny Boyle’s recent stage production of Frankenstein opposite co-lead Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Holmes in the BBC version.
Veteran ‘Medium’ writer Robert Doherty will scribe the show based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation and oversee the development as executive producer. Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly will also produce. These are the folks behind CBS’s current shows “A Gifted Man” and “Unforgettable.”

CW’s Ringer, Secret Circle, Hart Of Dixie Get Full Season Orders
Burbank, California was the spot when CW network execs officially ordered up full rounds of freshman seasons for several of their newest shows. This is good news for Sarah Michelle Gellar, Britt Robertson and Thomas Dekker, and Rachel Bilson. These actors headline the three series in question. Put on your party hats and toss some confetti. Ringer, Secret Circle, and Hart of Dixie will all continue on the airwaves to enjoy full first seasons.
Mark Pedowitz, President of the CW was singing praises for his line-up. He highlighted the “creative strength” of the three dramas of these dramas, and appreciated the “engaging characters” the shows offer. He did not mention how wonderful it was that all three shows feature strong female protagonists, but those are my two cents! Pedowitz was also grateful for the “tremendous buzz” fans have unleashed concerning these programs.

People wearing masks often used by "Anonymous". What are Your FAve Hacking Films Of All-tme
Fox News is reporting that The New York Stock Exchange withstood a hacker attack Monday by the famous hacker group Anonymous, having only briefly affecting the NYSE website.
“NYSE.com appeared to slow down and perhaps go offline briefly between 3:35pm and 3:37pm, media reports said, but there was no interruption to trading on the stock exchange and the public website immediately returned to normal.”
Anonymous had warned earlier that its attack would come at 3:30pm on October 10.
With this news it made us wonder what some of our favorite Hacker themed films were of all-time. This is below is compiled around films that center around hacking, hackers doing something disruptive. There is a lot of films that feature “hacking” as a sub-plot but they didn’t warrant tons of consideration as these films did.

Carlton Cuse Is Producing a Spiritual Drama for ABC
Former Lost showrunner and Executive Producer, Carlton Cuse, is teaming with famed author/Pastor Rob Bell for a new spiritual drama for ABC. The series titled Stronger will have spiritual overtones with a story revolving around Tom Stronger, a musician and teacher, and his spiritual journey as he becomes a benefactor and guide to others. ABC dabbled a bit before with a spiritual series known as Eli Stone. Pushing Daises was also a stylized comedy that discussed morality, death and other spiritual stuff.
CBS’ had huge success in the 90s, early 2000s running spiritual based series such as The Promised Land, Joan of Arcadia and Touched By an Angel.
It seems like genre is coming back in these “perilous times” for those who want to see shows about spiritual struggle. I commend the network for taking the risk or rather the “leap of faith.

The Green Lantern and Flash writer and producer has taken on a deal to consolidate his TV and Movie projects under one entity. His previous ABC contract had come into conflict with his burgeoning film success. This new development will allow for a more efficient balancing of the two mediums. Berlanti was no slouch in his TV productions, though. He guided Brothers & Sisters from a troubling start to its fifth season. He also developed the pilots for Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, and his co-created superhero offering No Ordinary Family, all of which graduated into series status. His work on these projects were all connected to a 5 year contract signed in 2008 when ABC execs with whom Berlanti had strong connection Mark Pedowitz, Francie Calfo, and Josh Barry were still with the...

I don’t easily warm to legal dramas because, to me, they conjure images of berobed barristers in dusty wigs speaking jargon, and I can’t shake the feeling that catching criminals is more exciting than trying them in court. It’s easier to stomach a legal drama in film, knowing you have a finite commitment to the process, but the prospect of watching the events of a courtroom every week has never appealed. The glossier American legal dramas (sans wigs and stuffy grandiloquence) often have this bookish vibe undercut in creative ways. Ally McBeal daydreamed of dancing babies, Damages hardly steps foot inside an actual courtroom, and Eli Stone was distracted by divine visions. Which is why The Good Wife came us such an unexpected surprise last year, for striking the perfect balance between episodic legal intrigues and serialized family drama, with no need for gimmicks or distractions.

Which shows that were cancelled in a season or 2 do you think could have become classics

Kenneth Johnson set out to produce a television miniseries with allegorical elements to the way humanity surrendered to the forceful appeal of the Third Reich – except for an underground resistance that proved to save the world for freedom. His initial V miniseries on NBC was filled with memorable characters, some spooky reveals and was quite effective. The sequel mini wasn’t bad but then Johnson was gone but NBC wanted a weekly series and that was a train wreck. Since then, Johnson and the networks have danced around reviving the story of humanity’s struggle to control its destiny in the face of overwhelming alien forces. When it was clear the creator wasn’t going to see things his way, he turned his premise into a turgid and frankly, not very good novel while Warner Bros. moved ahead without him and that may have been for the best.

Prison Break’s Chris Vance (Whistler!) has booked a multi-episode arc on the upcoming fifth season of Dexter, sources confirm to me exclusively.
The British thesp—who most recently headlined Fox’s short-lived shrink procedural Mental—will play Cole, a meticulous, physically fit, well-spoken personal aide to a famous businessman.
Vance, who is slated to appear in at least three episodes of Dexter, also recurred on the third season of Burn Notice as an antagonist to Jeffrey Donovan’s Michael.
Other Dexter season 5 guest stars include Julia Stiles, erstwhile RoboCop Peter Weller, and ex-Eli Stone attorney Johnny Lee Miller.

It was announced today that actor Peter Weller has joined the cast Dexter for 8 of the 12 episodes of Season 5. Hit the jump to find out who Weller will play. According to Deadline, Weller will play 'a troubled Miami Metro police officer who gets caught up in an internal affairs investigation'. Ok, not nearly as exciting as I had hoped, but still, this could be good. Season 5 of Dexter is currently filming for a Sept 26th debut. Weller joins other dexter newbies Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Eli Stone), Julia Stiles and Shawn Hatosy.

Dexter Morgan's Miami just got a little hotter. Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Eli Stone) has signed on for several episodes of "Dexter," Season 5. He'll be portraying a "mysterious man" who gets involved with another new character, played by Julia Stiles. (I don't know what the hell Julia Stiles has been doing other than the Bourne series, so this is likely a gift for her career.) Not a lot of information, I know, but enough to perk up my ears. While Dexter has become a beloved serial killer mostly due to the talents of Michael C. Hall, the fantastic guest freaks have certainly elevated the series. I'm still swooning (and sobbing) over Keith Carradine's Lundy. Also, still a little freaked out about Dex marrying his show sister, but I'm sure I'll learn to separate reality and fiction one of these days.

If 'Glee' has you yearning for more song-and-dance routines on TV, hold onto your (top) hats! From April 29 to May 5, Fox is turning several of its shows into musicals, including 'Bones,' 'House,' 'The Simpsons,' even 'Fringe.' On May 2, 'Family Guy' will celebrate its 150th episode with an extended episode featuring new and familiar musical numbers. Suffice to say the shows should be a blast, for both us and the actors.
Of course, TV aficionados know this is nothing new. Shows like 'Ally McBeal,' 'Eli Stone,' and 'SpongeBob SquarePants' have featured musical numbers regularly, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention 'Viva Laughlin' and 'Cop Rock' (even though the latter was declared by TV Guide to be one of the worst shows ever, ouch!). "FlashForward" is getting another new showrunner.
Co-creator David Goyer is stepping down from his role running the series, sources confirmed.
The "Dark Knight" scribe will still be "involved" with the show, but will focus on feature films and directing.
"As my feature projects have started ramping up again, I felt I was being pulled in too many directions," said Goyer in a statement. "I'm proud of the show and excited about the relaunch. It's in great hands."
Goyer had limited hands-on TV series experience, so "Eli Stone" co-creator Mark Guggenheim was brought as showrunner in after his "FlashForward" pilot received a pickup to help with the launch of the mystery drama based on Robert Sawyer's novel.
After the show creative struggled out of the gate, Guggenheim stepped down as showrunner in October and was replaced by Goyer.
Who will serve as the new showrunner for "FlashForward" is not yet clear.

(S04E16) "Objection, your honor. He's reciting the opening to Quantum Leap." -- Adam Monro, prosecuting attorney in Hiro's mind-trial
This week, it was time to deal once and for all with that pesky tumor in Hiro's brain. This isn't Eli Stone, after all. Not to mention how downright loopy he's been lately. So apparently the resolution is for his body to collapse while he faces a strange trial in the diner where he met, failed-to-save, and then did save Charlie. David Anders reprised his role as Adam Monroe to prosecute our time traveling hero, while George Takei presided over the thing as his father and the judge.
The rest of the episode was split between Sylar's quest to figure out why Lydia's ability was directing him to Claire, and Samuel's attempts to woo Vanessa after he'd kidnapped her. I can say, that I thought he was off to a rough start on that one.

The rest of the episode was split between Sylar's quest to figure out why Lydia's ability was directing him to Claire, and Samuel's attempts to woo Vanessa after he'd kidnapped her. I can say, that I thought he was off to a rough start on that one.

More and more shows are doing musical episodes now. We've had The Simpsons doing several over the years, and then Buffy The Vampire Slayer had one too. Eli Stone had a lot of music and of course Glee takes it to a whole new level. Now How I Met Your Mother is getting into the act this Monday for its 100th episode. Here's a sneak peek. The episode is called "Girls vs. Suits" and you can see why.
Soon every show will have Neil Patrick Harris singing and dancing on it.

The long awaited sequel to Family Guy’s first Star Wars parody, Blue Harvest, has finally arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. Something, Something Dark Side, is the crew’s hilarious redux of Empire Strikes Back. First off I must point out the show wastes no time in giving some kind of pop culture reference to insult or make you smile. While watching Aaron Sorkin’s new show “The Kitchen” featuring people walking and talking intelligently throughout a kitchen, The Griffin’s are struck with another power outage leaving Peter with one thing to do, tell the next story in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Assuming that the viewer is already familiar with the film’s plot, the opening crawl instead goes into detail about how 20th Century Fox made Star Wars unprofitable (foreseeing it a failure) to other companies by letting George Lucas keep all merchandising rights to it and...

Lots of shows have played around with the premonition and psychic vision backbone that forms the procedural skeleton of countless television shows. Whether it’s a live Ouija-board-esque, host talks to dead relative half hour spook show or a 42-minute narrative about solving clues with a sixth sense, there’s a basic requirement for admission to each show: you have to want to believe. Belief as a fundamental tool has seen just as much play on the screen as shows about the skeptics and frauds (House, Psych, Mentalist – or any show that uses deductive reasoning in lieu of supernatural forces). Medium, however, lies firmly on the side of pure unwavering belief. Even when protagonist Allison Dubois temporarily loses her ability the show never ceases to pound home its message “there is validity to psychic abilities”. The series spent a good deal of time mapping out the eccentricities of Allison’s gift and now,...

CBS dramas NCIS: Los Angeles and The Good Wife have been picked up for full seasons following strong ratings on the network's Tuesday night block. The quick renewals were expected, thanks both to those ratings successes and to CBS drama viewers, who have long accepted nothing but quirky detectives and harried middle-aged women looking to make right in this world. Other expected fast renewals include ABC's FlashForward, Modern Family, and Cougar Town, which fulfill that network's need to vindicate the memories of Eli Stone, Step by Step, and Cashmere Mafia, respectively. Josh Schwartz is venturing into David E. Kelley territory, trying to Gossip Girl-up the lawyer genre with a new project he just sold in a bidding war to ABC (which seems determined to find its own brand of courtroom show, even though it didn't happen with the late, great Eli Stone). It's about a commitmentphobic female divorce lawyer, which does sound right up ABC's Television for Women alley -- a sort-of Ally McBeal for the Grey's Anatomy set (i.e. Ally minus dancing baby-inducing biological clock). It's being written by Chuck writer Ali Adler, which also bodes well. (Extra points to Schwartz, by the way, for nurturing much-needed female TV writing talent, including Gg's Stephanie Savage as well.) And I'm all for leading ladies whose major life goal is not to find a man. What do you think, PopWatchers? Does TV need a new Ally McBeal? Are you psyched...

All across the United States, kids and young adults are returning to school after the traditional summer vacation. And a homework assignment given out to almost every child in grade school is to write a report on what he or she did on their summer vacation. So that I wouldn't feel left out, here's my report on what genre programming I watched this summer. To begin with, I watched the traditional burn-off of canceled shows. ABC gave us the remaining episodes of "Pushing Daisies" and "Eli Stone," and NBC gave us "Kings." I was a loyal viewer of all these series when they premiered during the season, and I wasn't going to miss them. "Kings" I went into detail in my last column, but I just want to reiterate what an outstanding series it was, and I really wish I was looking forward to ...

Greg Berlanti is going solo. The Everwood creator has parted ways with producing partner Mickey Liddell and has renamed his Touchstone TV-based company Berlanti Television. Berlanti has tapped Melissa Berman as president of production at Berlanti TV, which already has set up two projects at ABC. Eli Stone, a high-concept legal drama, has received a pilot order from the network, and an untitled project from writer Craig Wright has been given a script commitment. The split between Berlanti and Liddell, who worked together since Liddell produced Berlanti's 2000 indie feature The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy, is said to be amicable.
