As part of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association weekend, Deadline gathered the creator and cast of Netflix’s The Diplomat for an event hosted by the Irish ambassador to the United States, Geraldine Byrne Nason.
Stars Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, creator Debora Cahn and Nason sat down for a panel with Deadline’s Ted Johnson, before guests who included Samantha Power, Anthony Fauci and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn).
When asked about the real-life similarities of her life to the show, the Irish Ambassador quipped, “Some things I haven’t seen were the kind of skinny dipping.”
“Don’t limit yourself. It may still come to pass,” Russell responded.
There are many other similarities, Nason said.
“There is very little that we would ever say is fair in love or war, or politics or diplomacy,” she said. “But I think what we as diplomats, our trade, is to...

Editors note: This is one of those moments when the flow of news seems like an assault on the senses. The Donald trump trial, the student protests, Gaza, the election campaigning — will our trust in the media survive these traumas? Can our pop culture assimilate them? Peter Bart, based on the West Coast, and Ted Johnson, Deadline’s political and media editor in Washington DC, lend their perspectives to these questions.
Ted Johnson: The Trump trial augurs badly for the public paying attention to balanced, in-depth coverage. This is, after all, the first time that a former President has faced a criminal trial and I fear the takeaway will be — well, exhaustion.
With cameras barred, the TV networks are trying to achieve a sort of blanket coverage, with scrolls delivering legal analyses occasionally interrupted by Trump’s bursts of hallway rhetoric. Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner will be...

Update: President Joe Biden signed a massive national security bill that requires that ByteDance divest TikTok or face a ban on app stores as soon as nine months from now.
Biden gave remarks after signing the bill, highlighting the $95 billion outlay for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
He did not mention the provision on TikTok, the popular social media platform that has raised concerns that the Chinese government would get access to user information.
In a video posted on X/Twitter, TikTok CEO Shou Chew said that the new law was “obviously a disappointing moment, but it does not need to be a defining one.”
“Rest assured, we are not going anywhere,” he said, adding that they would challenge the law in the courts.
“The facts and the Constitution are on side, and we expect to prevail again,” he said.

Update: Judge Juan Merchan has not yet issued a decision on whether Donald Trump violated a gag order and, if so, what kind of sanction he should face.
Merchan listened to both sides during an hourlong hearing, at one point getting perturbed at Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche.
“You’re losing all credibility with the court,” Merchan told Blanche at one point, after Trump’s attorney said that the former president was “being very careful” to comply with the order.
Prosecutors are pointing to at least ten instances where they say Trump has violated the order. That includes a Truth Social post that appeared to quote Fox News host Jesse Watters. “They are catching undercover Liberal Activists lying to the Judge in order to get on the Trump Jury,” the post quoted Watters as saying.
But prosecutors said that Trump added words to the quote, and it was not merely a repost.

“Live coverage here, as it happens,” Fox News’ Martha MacCallum declared Thursday with an on-screen Breaking News alert. “We are now minutes away from Hunter Biden’s arraignment in a Los Angeles courtroom!”
Mere hours after Donald Trump received the judicial equivalent of a spanking in the courtroom at New York City fraud trial, Biden’s courtroom appearance on the other side of the country had Fnc in a lather.
In the federal courthouse in downtown LA, Biden entered a not-guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarci. The hearing, Biden’s first appearance in the case, lasted about 30 minutes with Trump-appointed judge Scarci making sure Biden was aware a warrant for his arrest could be issued if he failed to comply with any conditions of release like drinking or having a gun.
“Do you understand?” the judge asked.
“I do, your honor,” Biden responded, with his attorneys by his side.

They were testing the New Year’s Eve ball Saturday in Times Square ahead of Sunday’s celebrations, but the real spectacle was happening on the streets.
In a self-declared “heightened threat environment” since Hamas’ murderous assault on Israeli communities near the border with Gaza and the butchering of thousands on October 7, and the punishing military response by the Jewish state, the NYPD is pulling out all security stops openly and behind the scenes in anticipation of protests and potential violence on New Year’s Eve.
With big Nye specials in the final stages, networks are gearing up for an anticipated unruly night.
Amidst bubbling online chatter and activist promises of a big turnout of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli protestors December 31, New York Mayor Eric Adams insisted Friday in a Times Square press conference with Chief Jeff Maddrey and other top cops that “there are no specific threats to the city.

Exclusive: The meteoric political rise of George Santos and the web of fabulist tales it was built on are getting a movie treatment. HBO Films has optioned the rights to Mark Chiusano’s new book The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos, which was published on November 28, 2023.
The news comes on the heels of Santos’ Washington D.C. career coming to a dramatic end yesterday when he was expelled from Congress for alleged ethics violations, including donor funds spent on racy subscription website OnlyFans and Botox treatments. He has denied the charges and has vowed to fight back.
The film, now in development, is described as a forensic and darkly comic look at the crazy, unprecedented congressional race on Long Island that led to Santos being elected to Congress. It comes from Frank Rich, who executive produced HBO’s Emmy-winning Washington DC satire...

Updated with Lachlan Murdoch comments: Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch said his father, Rupert, “is very much involved and will be for years to come” despite stepping down from his chairman role in September.
“I would like to congratulate my father on his 70-year career at News Corp. and Fox,” Murdoch said during a call with Wall Street analysts to discuss fiscal first-quarter results. “His enduring legacy can be felt in both of these companies. And I can assure you that he is still very much involved and will continue to be for years to come.”
While Fox edged Wall Street analysts’ estimates but profits dipped due to a comparative lack of political advertising.
While in some respects it has been business as usual for Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, it has undeniably entered a new phase since the 92-year-old mogul stepped down in September as chairman of Fox and News Corp.

After a winding road of regulatory challenges, Microsoft today closed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, creating a video game behemoth.
While Microsoft has always been an acquisitive company, the deal for Activision Blizzard is its biggest, and is the largest M&a deal since AOL bought Time Warner more than two decades ago. Not only did Microsoft’s move trigger antitrust scrutiny in many parts of the world, but it occurred as Activision Blizzard was taking steps to address widespread allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment within its ranks.
Microsoft has been a successful player in the video game console business through Xbox, but Activision Blizzard unites it with one of the top game publishers in the sector, one known for blockbuster franchises like Call of Duty.

Israel-Hamas Conflict
Shock and horror: It’s hard to know where to begin with the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. Thousands have died since a Hamas-led militia crossed the Gaza Strip border and began attacking Israeli villages and kibbutzes. There’s no end to the conflict in sight, with Israel now blockading Gaza and ordering Gaza City residents to evacuate, while there is growing international concern about the safety of Palestinian citizens who will soon be devoid of food, water and fuel. The history of the conflict runs deep and this isn’t the forum to discuss it, beyond believing that violence cannot be the answer. Like the rest of the world,...

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

Last Friday, Bliefnick was given three life sentences in prison for murdering his wife.
In the courtroom, Judge Robert Adrian said, “You researched this murder. You planned this murder. You practiced this murder. You broke into her house, and you shot her… You did all of that while your children were upstairs at your house, lying snug in their beds.”
Before the sentencing was made, Becky Bliefnick‘s family read their statements. Becky’s mother, Bernadette, said, “When you murdered Becky, you took from your boys the person who loved them the most on Earth…...

Update, Wednesday: White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the Justice Department is still reviewing a federal judge’s decision that restricts administration officials from contacting social media companies on “protected speech.”
She declined to say whether there would be an appeal of the decision, which came in response to a lawsuit filed by the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana. They claimed that federal government officials were “colluding” with social media giants to censor speech related to Covid-19 and election integrity “under the guise of combatting ‘misinformation.'”
“We’re going to continue to promote responsible actions to protect public health, safety and security when confronted by challenges like a deadly pandemic and foreign attacks on our elections,” Jean-Pierre said.
“We do disagree with the decision, but the DOJ will come up with their own options.”

The Senate subcommittee investigating the recent merger of rivals the PGA Tour and Liv Golf League has set its first hearing for next week, inviting two PGA Tour execs to testify.
PGA Tour COO Ron Price and board member Jimmy Dunne will testify before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on July 11.
PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan has been on medical leave and was not on the two-person witness list released Monday.
The panel will probe the merger deal, reached June 6, citing its impact on the future of the sport as well its implications for Saudi Arabia’s influence in the U.S. Liv, which had lured several of the PGA Tour’s top players to its side as part of the bitter feud with the PGA, is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund.

Updated: Writers Guild of America members and supporters brought their pickets to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, this time to demonstrate at a location for the next Captain America movie.
About two dozen started picketing in late afternoon about a block away from the White House, near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th Street.
Diana Metzger, a comedy writer, said that this was the first on-location picket that members have been able to do in the city, where not too many productions shoot compared with Los Angeles and New York.
“It’s important to have a presence here because there are writers all across the country — not just in L.A., not just in New York — who are trying to make a living doing this,” she said. “And it is not just a handful of wealthy people in those wealthy cities, it is all over the country. They shoot all over the country.

“Republicans are back on the air. Republicans weren’t on the air,” on CNN, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told a media conference Thursday as he said the storied brand is moving to become less of an “advocacy network” under new leadership.
“During the McCarthy hearings, for those four days, we had 75 Republicans on the air, 41 went on us before they want on Fox [News]. And the reason is, as I’ve said, and Chris [CNN chief Chris Licht] has too, to a number of them, they are not going to get one more vote on Fox News. They’ve already got that.” He was referring to successive votes over four days in January as the GOP struggled to unite its ranks to reach a victory for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Fox News Media waved its banner during the Fox upfront Monday afternoon in New York, plugging a wide array of platforms but notably gliding past its main profit center in prime time.
Opinion shows like the one hosted by the recently ejected Tucker Carlson got only a glancing mention during the 7-minute segment. Carlson’s stunning exit earlier this spring has led to a steep and immediate drop in ratings for his former hour, though of course Fox News Channel makes a large share of its profits from distribution fees rather than relying as heavily on advertising as lower-rated rivals.
Jeff Collins, EVP of ad sales for the news division, brought onstage veteran hosts Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino. After touching on the Fox News Channel, they took ad buyers on a briskly paced tour of divisions devoted to business, weather, audio and digital news.

A Year At War
Commemorating: A year is a long time in anyone’s calendar but, for the people of Ukraine, the 12 months that have followed that dreadful day on February 24, 2022, must have felt like a lifetime. Commemorative programs dominated the schedules yesterday and today as the global community marks the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion by highlighting the plight of an embattled nation, and considering what’s to come. Updated with details: A nearly 45-minute power failure hit Los Angeles International Airport at about 2:30 p.m. today, halting passenger screenings and potentially delaying flights. The Department of Water and Power said its crews have restored service and that “the outage is being investigated.”

The airport had tweeted earlier that “most of our terminals are impacted by the loss of power and crews are assessing the issue. Some departing flights may be impacted due to no power to jet bridges. Please allow extra time and check your flight status as we learn more.”

Updated: President Joe Biden today offered America’s “deepest condolences to the Royal Family” on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The 14th US President of the UK monarch’s 70-year reign, Biden said that Elizabeth was “a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock Alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States.”
The passing of the 96-year old Queen on Thursday caused Biden to cancel a schedule speech on the Covid pandemic from the White House. Earlier today, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre learned of the Queen’s death while giving her regular briefing to the press. “Our hearts and our thoughts go to the family members of the queen, goes (sic) to the people of the United Kingdom,” said Jean-Pierre from the White House podium.

Let’s get after it.
That was the name of former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s SiriusXM show, but it also might be the tagline for his sit down with Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time this Friday. It will be Cuomo’s first one-on-one TV interview since it was announced earlier this week that he will join Nexstar’s NewsNation this fall. Cuomo also has new podcast, The Chris Cuomo Project.
Cuomo was, of course, dismissed from CNN in December, following allegations about the extent to which he advised his brother Andrew as the then-Governor of New York fought a cascade of scandals. The Cuomo Primetime host also faced his own workplace sexual misconduct allegations. As a result, Cuomo has asked for 125 million in arbitration.

More details are emerging about the fatal shooting of a Law & Order: Organized Crime crew member this morning as the New York Police department scrutinizes the violent crime.
A crew member on the NBC series told Deadline that he saw a man with “something under his shirt” running away from the scene. Also, it appears that the vehicle the victim — a 31-year-old parking-enforcement worker — was sitting in when he was shot multiple times had an orange parking cone on its roof at the time.
It appears that there was no security or NYPD officers from the department’s Movie and TV unit on the scene at the time of the killing, which happened at 5:15 a.m. local time.
“It is unclear right now if this was an established set or not, or whether the victim was close to where filming was supposed to occur,” a law enforcement source told Deadline.

President Joe Biden today gave a speech marking the signing of a gun safety bill passed in the aftermath of recent mass shootings.
But even as lawmakers, gun reform advocates and victims’ families gathered on the South Law ceremony said that the new legislation would be meaningful, some also said it falls short of laws that were in place in the past, like an assault weapons ban, or even a ban on purchases of those firearms for those under 21. And some said it more loudly than others.
Biden’s speech was interrupted by Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin was killed in the 2018 Parkland, Fl shootings. Oliver could be heard shouting, “I have been trying to tell you this, for years,” and Biden then said, “Let him talk. Let him talk.” Oliver, who founded the group Change the Ref and is calling for much greater measures, was then escorted away.

Plus there’s some Studio 54, Catholicism, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Of course, it’s problematic, but you know you are going to find it hard to turn away. – Dominic Patten
March 9, Netflix
2. The Masked Singer Season 7 Debut: The celebrity performance show returns to Fox tonight for its seventh season with a slew of good, bad and cuddly contestants, as their own advertising proclaims. Even with past participants like Mickey Rourke, Sarah Palin and NBA legend Dennis Rodman, no contestant has attracted the attention that Rudy Giuliani has generated. Just the idea of having Giuliani...

1. The Afterparty Season Finale: Through the first seven episodes of the Christopher Miller created and Phil Lord EP’d murder mystery, Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner has been trying to find out who killed the annoying pop hack Xavier (Dave Franco) at the high school reunion shindig. With The Afterparty renewed today for a second season, this case looks to be ending, one way or the other. The thing is the Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou co-staring multi-perspective comedy’s “Maggie” eighth episode could see a true blast from the past provide the damning evidence, one way or the other. – Dominic Patten

1. Law & Order Season 21 Premiere: The ‘dun, dun” is still there, the format is fundamentally the same, plus Sam Waterston, Camryn Manheim and Anthony Anderson are back in the Manhattan D.A.’s office and pounding the streets for the NYPD for Dick Wolf’s revival of the original Law & Order.
However, somethings have actually changed since the iconic series that launched a 1000 spinoffs went off the air in 2010. NBC have only provided the first episode for critics, so a full-scale review is inappropriate. Yet, with the addition of the likes of Odelya Halevi, Jeffrey Donovan, and Hugh Dancy, let’s just say, the 21st season of this new-ish L&o is as much ripped from the culture as it is the headlines – at least off the bat.

“Why can’t he learn how to give a better speech?” With the State of the Union address looming next month, Joe Biden’s Hollywood critics and supporters increasingly ask that question as they see his approval ratings tank even as his policies gain favor.
Talk with Michael Douglas, Robert Redford, Warren Beatty and others who have portrayed U.S. presidents and political climbers during their careers and they all describe their intense self-training in presidential cadence and elocution. Even Ronald Reagan habitually consulted coach Michael Deaver (and wife Nancy), while Lyndon Johnson demanded the presence of director Franklin Schaffner. They worked hard at it.
“A presidential speech today is like seeing a Marvel movie with no action,” observes filmmaker Barry Levinson. In his hilarious 1997 movie Wag the Dog, a desperate president hires political hustlers, played by Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro, to drum up a fake political crisis...

There will be no second season for 60 Minutes+, the streaming version of the CBS News newsmagazine. Paramount+ has canceled the series after one season.
“We are proud of the team at 60 Minutes+ and of the stories they produced, which informed the audience about some of the most important issues of our time,” Paramount+ said in a statement to Deadline. “Their journalism was recognized with several awards, including a Gracie, National Headliner and Nabj Salute to Excellence Award. The excellent work that has been done by the 60+ team will continue to be on Paramount+.”
The program featured longer segments and a new team of correspondents, including Laurie Segall, Enrique Acevedo, Seth Doane and Wesley Lowery. They all reported for 60 in 6, the shortform newsmagazine that was featured on the short-lived subscription service Quibi in 2020.

Matthew McConaughey announced Sunday evening he will not be running for the Governor of Texas.
“As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership,” McConaughey said. “It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.”
In a three-minute video posted onto his personal Instagram page, the Oscar-winner talked about the values of service and what he’s learned in the interim while considering to run for political office.
“What have I learned? That we have some problems we need to fix, that our politics needs new purpose, that we have divides that need healing, that we need more trust in our lives. We got to start shining a light on our shared values, the ones that cross party lines, the ones that build bridges instead of burn them,...
