John Corbett, Nia Vardalos, and Elena Kampouris in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)
You Can Probably Guess the Line Andrea Martin Hears Most From ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ (Video)
John Corbett, Nia Vardalos, and Elena Kampouris in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” has officially hit theaters worldwide.

In an interview with TheWrap conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, star Andrea Martin teased that the latest installment will leave audiences with “a feeling of connection.”

“I think it will resonate with people in a very deep way having come out of the pandemic, because it’s all about family and connection and not isolation,” she said. “Everywhere the family goes, they go together. So I have a feeling that it will be like a warm hug watching this movie. I certainly felt like that when I was shooting it, but where we are as a world right now, I think we all want to be embraced by something familiar, by people that are familiar, that have been a part of our lives for 20 years.”

The sequel, which comes 21 years after the release of the original film, is...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Review | The Baklava Has Gone Bad
Image
You won’t be screaming "Opa!" with glee after seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, but there is enough feel-good charm in writer/director Nia Vardalos’s third go-around in her Big Fat Greek Universe to keep you satiated. For a while, anyway. It would have been great if the third time was a charm for the Portokalos family, but alas, how we find that family here and the story they’re given to exist in simply doesn’t work.

That’s not entirely Vardalos’ fault. Her intentions are pure: Create films that remind audiences of the universal bonds we all share around family, relationships, and loved ones. The problem — there are quite a few actually — is how Vardalos and her creative team chose to execute what could have been a truly rewarding endeavor. Fear not. Hope is not all lost. A few Greek muses try to save the day.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 – Review

Did we need a My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3? Somebody thought so. Sure, the first one was charming, a word-of-mouth surprise hit romantic comedy, with both laughs and love in a big, close Greek-American family, when a young woman, Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), upends family expectations by marrying a non-Greek man, Ian Miller (John Corbett). There has already been one sequel, and despite the sequels’ titles, Toula is not getting married again, as she is still married to that first non-Greek guy from the original movie. What both sequels do is let us spend more time with the large,...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Review
Nia Vardalos
After 21 years since this larger-than-life franchise first hit our screens, writer and leading lady Nia Vardalos revisits this world once again in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3”. Arguably, seeing a 3 in a film’s title (other than Toy Story 3…) might encourage an eyeroll – especially considering the state of the industry right now, but there is an inescapable warmth with this comedy franchise.

In the third installment of this series, you are immediately transported to a beautiful Greek setting that is dripping in history and vivid hues. It feels as though you can inhale the pure air and experience the soothing tingle of the sun on your skin, providing a sense of release, as the Portokalos family departs from their hectic city lifestyle.

The narrative continues to revolve around married couple Toula Portokalos, (Vardalos) and Ian Miller who, as we know, have learned to embrace their cultural differences and merge them becoming one big,...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Review: A Heartwarming Reunion With Too Many Subplots
Image
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is like reuniting with a chaotic and fun-loving family, sparking joy and nostalgia. The film features stunning visuals of Greece and the hilarious Theia Voula steals the show with her comedic dialogue. However, the film suffers from too many subplots, leading to a lack of focus and affecting its pacing and overall cohesiveness.

The Portokalos family is back in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and they’re still as chaotic and fun-loving as ever. When it comes to comedy sequels, it’s hard to recreate the magic of the original. Nia Vardalos, who wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding and wrote/directed its third installment, has always tried her best to do so with the material, but it never landed in quite the same way. I saw my own family in the Portokalos clan and seeing them once again in this sequel sparks...

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Review: Nia Vardalos and John Corbett Head to the Homeland for a (Mostly) Painless Third Installment
Image
Ever been invited to a family reunion you had no desire to attend? You may be tired of seeing your relatives and listening to their familiar routines, which can be downright annoying at times. But then you force yourself to go and you find that you have a good time after all, at least for a little while.

That’s roughly the experience of seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, the latest chapter in the saga of the eccentric Portokalas family previously seen in the wildly popular 2002 original and its much less successful 2016 sequel (the less said about the short-lived 2003 sitcom spin-off My Big Fat Greek Life, the better). If you enjoyed spending time with Nia Vardalos’ Toula and the rest of her extended clan, you’ll probably have a good time again, even if the characters and jokes are wearing thin with repetition.

And as a special treat,...

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Review: The Portokalos Family Goes to Greece
Nia Vardalos
More than twenty years ago, Nia Vardalos’s independent romantic comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” — a Cinderella story of a burdened and awkward woman Toula (Vardalos) falling in love with a non-Greek man at the dismay of her extended Greek family — smashed box office record after box office record, grossing more than seventy times its budget worldwide. Vardalos was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and the film inspired both a spin-off television show and a less-than sequel in 2016. Now, Vardalos is back, with her fictional Portokalos family behind her, for a third entry in the series. Does the franchise still have the magic and charm of its original?

Well, a little vacation never hurt anyone, or at least not seriously, and once the Portokalos family arrives in their native Greece, you’re left wondering why they’ve been trying, for so many years, to fix all their problems with weddings.

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Review: Nia Vardalos Finally Exhausts the 20-Year Franchise
Image
Back in 2002, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” introduced mainstream audiences to all the heartwarming moments, overbearing relatives, and downright craziness of coming from a large Greek-American family. Somehow, Nia Vardalos’ breakout rom-com spurred a two-decade-long trilogy; sadly, the third installment relies too heavily on its stunning Corfu scenery instead of an actual plot.

This is Vardalos’ first time in the director’s chair for the trilogy that she penned; “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is also Vardalos’ sophomore directorial effort overall. It shows. Jokes fall flat while attempts at seriousness are downright hilarious in their off-tone delivery.

Vardalos is back as Toula Portakolos, the new head of the family after her father Gus passed away and her mother (Lainie Kazan) now suffers from dementia. Toula is determined to carry out her dad’s last wish of bringing his old journal to his childhood friends, whom he left in their...

Image
It’s a big fat Greek reunion with third entry in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise. The official My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 trailer reveals Fotoula ‘Toula’ Portokalos (writer/director/actor Nia Vardalos) is keeping a promise to her late father to take the family back home and locate his old friends.

Among those reprising their roles are John Corbett as Ian Miller, Elena Kampouris as Paris Miller, Gia Carides as Nikki, Joey Fatone as Angelo, Louis Mandylor as Nick Portokalos, Lainie Kazan as Maria Portokalos, and Andrea Martin as Thiea Voula. Sadly, Michael Constantine, who played family patriarch Gus Portokalos in the first two films, passed away in August 2021.

Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman return as producers. Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, and Steven Shareshian serve as executive producers.

The Portokalos Family Touches Down in Greece in the ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Trailer
Image
The Portokalos family is taking their Big Fat Greek life to the homeland in the official trailer for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.

The two-and-a-half-minute look at the third installment of the romantic comedy franchise opens on Nia Vardalos’ Toula catching audiences up, explaining that a lot has happened since her wedding in the first film to John Corbett’s Ian.

“My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village and reconnect with our roots, so we’re having a reunion,” Toula says. “And by we, I mean the whole family.”

The trailer footage also sees the lead character begin to take her place as the new “head of the family,” according to her brother, Nick (Louis Mandylor). The third film marks the first one in the franchise without the late Michael Constantine, who played Portokalos family patriarch Costas.

Vardalos wrote and directed...

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Trailer: Nia Vardalos and John Corbett Become the New Heads of the Family
Image
Focus Features has released the first official trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” offering a look at the latest Portokalos party.

Star Nia Vardalos returns as the screenwriter for the third film and, for the first time, serves as the latest entry’s director. Vardalos will lead the film alongside her former and returning co-stars John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Maria Vacratsis, Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone and Lainie Kazan. A couple of new faces have joined the cast, including Elias Kacavas and Melina Kotselou. After Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father Gus, died in 2021, the third film will pay tribute to the late actor.

The original “Big Fat Greek Wedding” premiered in 2002 and became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, earning a total of $368 million worldwide over the course of nearly one calendar year of play at the box office. The veritable phenomenon...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3: Release Date, Cast And More
Image
(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

If one were to apply the "Predator" handshake meme to Nia Vardalos and James Cameron, their clasped hands should probably be labeled, "Making incredibly long-legged hits at the box office." Cameron, mind you, has done this a tad more often than Vardalos has at this stage in their respective careers, but the mere fact that I was even able to write that sentence with a straight face is a testament to just how massive a sleeper success "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was upon its release in 2002. To this day, it remains the second-highest-grossing film to never hit the top spot at the U.S. box office during its theatrical run.

You better hold tightly onto that crown while you still can,...

‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ to Walk Down Theater Aisle in September
Image
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will walk down the aisle and into theaters on Sept. 8, Focus Features and parent studio Universal Pictures announced Friday.

The early fall corridor has worked out well in recent times for movies appealing to older adult moviegoers. Universal’s hit romantic-comedy Ticket to Paradise opened in cinemas this past September, while Focus’ Downtown Abbey started its theatrical run in September 2018.

Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 opens more than 20 years after My Big Fat Greek Wedding grossed 368.7 million at the worldwide box office, including 241.4 million domestically. It remains the top-grossing romantic-comedy of all time at the North American box office, as well as one of the most successful indie titles of all time, not adjusted for inflation. The 2002 movie, which was based on her one-woman play, earned star and writer Nia Vardalos an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay and a Golden Globe nomination for best...
