Back in 1994, long before he was cast to play Jaime Lannister in the hit series Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau made his feature film debut in writer/director Ole Bornedal’s thriller Nightwatch, where he played a character named Martin, a law student who takes a job working as a night watchman at The Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen just as the place starts filling up with the bodies of a serial killer’s victims. Now, thirty years after working on the original Nightwatch together, Bornedal and Coster-Waldau have re-teamed for a “30 years” later sequel called Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, which is set to be released through the Shudder streaming service on May 17th – and with that date just a month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.

Nightwatch was so well-received that writer/director Ole Bornedal was given the opportunity to direct an English-language remake, which he wrote with Steven Soderbergh. Ewan McGregor played the Martin role in that 1997 film. Comedy and tragedy go hand-in-hand in the ironically titled “Out of Tune,” a cleverly executed, perfectly performed Danish dramedy about an absurdist power struggle taking place in a remand penitentiary from talented helmer Frederikke Aspöck. Filled with flawed characters who are both lovable and despicable, this nuanced portrait of universally recognizable human behavior seems ripe for a remake in any country that welcomes social critique. Aided by notable production and sound design and a spot-on score, Aspöck achieves a tricky balance of tone and sets a snappy pace. After well-received screenings in Rotterdam and Göteborg, further festivals and boutique distributors will be singing the praises of this provocative crowdpleaser.
The film’s musical elements are woven into the narrative from the very beginning, as charming but manipulative celebrity entrepreneur Markus Føns (Jacob Hauberg Lohman) enters remand custody for financial fraud while he awaits trial. His off-shore fortune and glamorous Indian...

"We, as a museum, mustn't be afraid to push boundaries." Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official Us trailer for Ruben Östlund's latest film The Square, which won the top prize Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It's one of my favorite films this year, a very brilliant social satire about how we think we're helping but really aren't. It also skewers the modern art world, and marketing, and the upper class, and so much more. Claes Bang stars as the director of a contemporary art museum in Sweden, but when his phone is stolen it sets off a series of events that lead him to an existential crisis. It also stars Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary (as the ape!), and Christopher Læssø. I wrote a glowing review in Cannes and I've been raving about it ever since, telling everyone I know to check it out.

Most people went into Cannes with films like “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “Happy End,” “The Beguiled,” and “Wonderstruck” as Palme d’Or contenders, so it was a bit of a surprise when Pedro Almodóvar’s jury bestowed the Palme d’Or to Ruben Östlund’s “The Square.”
The lengthy dramatic satire didn’t receive unanimous praise, but every critic seemed to find something to admire in the story of a museum curator who loses his cell phone and spirals out of control. Danish actor Claes Bang receives an international breakthrough role as Christian, while the supporting cast includes Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary, and Christopher Læssø.

"As you all know, the hunting instinct is triggered by weakness. If you show fear, the animal will sense it." Yes!! I love this movie, it's so brilliant. The first international trailer has debuted for Ruben Östlund's latest film The Square, which won the top prize Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. And it so deserves it. Claes Bang stars as the director of a contemporary art museum in Sweden, but when his phone is stolen it sets off a series of events that lead him to an existential crisis. There's so much crazy, amazing, genius stuff in this film and this trailer gives you a small hint at some of that - including the Justice song. This also stars Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, Terry Notary (as the ape!), and Christopher Læssø. This was one of my favorite films of Cannes and I just cannot wait...

With Force Majeure, Ruben Östlund’s name spread throughout Cannes and far beyond. A comedy about a cowardly man who makes no attempt to save his family during an avalanche and the aftermath of his inaction, the film garnered huge acclaim and his new film was eagerly anticipated. The Square is also a comedy, this time about a man who performs an apparently brave act and has to deal with the consequences.
We first meet Christian (Claes Bang) lying on his sofa at work and awoken to give an interview with an American journalist, Anne (Elisabeth Moss). He is the curator of a contemporary art museum and Anne wants to him to explain his comments about exhibitions. Östlund wrote the screenplay and his take on art-world babble is brilliant. In a nice visual touch, Christian is also filmed with the words You Are Nothing in neon tube lighting behind him.
