Berlin, March 28 (Ians) Benjamin Pavard’s goal saw France edge Ireland to lead Group B in a tough Euro 2024 qualifying fixture in Dublin, while the Netherlands and Hungary claimed victories in less stressful encounters.
Pavard’s strike from distance in the 50th minute ensured Les Bleus two straight wins in their qualifying campaign. The 2022 FIFA World Cup runners-up were restricted to few chances in the opening half, but Pavard cut out a Josh Cullen pass just outside the Ireland area before arrowing a strike, reports Xinhua.
The Netherlands bounced back after being thrashed by France on Friday as they won 3-0 over Gibraltar. Memphis Depay’s header in the 23rd minute gave the hosts a deserved lead midway through the first half, before Nathan Ake nodded in a second four minutes after the restart.

Madrid (Spain), Jan 20 (Ians) Dutch international striker Memphis Depay on Thursday trained with Atletico Madrid ahead of the confirmation of his signing from Fc Barcelona.
Depay will help cover for Joao Felix, who left to join Chelsea on loan a week ago.
The 28-year-old Dutch striker leaves Barcelona after scoring 14 goals in 42 appearances since joining on a free transfer from Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2021 at the petition of former coach Ronald Koeman.
The signing of Robert Lewandowski has seen Memphis drop down the pecking order at Camp Nou and that, along with an injury earlier in the season, means he has started just two league matches this campaign, reports news agency Xinhua.
Atletico are thought to have paid Barca around three million euros to buy Depay, which represents a decent return for Barca, given that they signed him for nothing. The striker’s departure will also lower Barca’s hefty wage bill,...

The 18-year-old gave two assists and scored one of Barca’s three goals in a complete display in the King Fahd Stadium as Barca outplayed their historic rivals for nearly all of the game to give Xavi Hernandez his first title since replacing Ronald Koeman as coach 14 months ago, reports Xinhua news agency.
Real Madrid brought Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy into their starting 11, while Andreas Christensen, Alex Balde and Sergio Busquets were all in for Barcelona.
With both sides playing an extra man in midfield, space was at a premium in the first half, with challenges not allowing players time on the ball.

Madrid, June 11 (Ians) Fc Barcelona's veteran central defender Gerard Pique said on Friday that he would hang up his boots and retire from football if the club wanted him to leave.
Speaking in an online interview, the 34-year-old, who is also the owner of third-tier side Fc Andorra, ruled out playing for the club he owns, reports Xinhua.
"The day I stop playing for Barca, I will leave football. I will never play for another team. If [Barcelona coach] Ronald Koeman told me tomorrow that I had to go, I would retire from the game," he insisted.
Pique was asked about the criticism that players receive in the modern game, and replied that "criticism is part of football, when you run out onto the pitch, you know what you could be letting yourself in for".

Madrid, May 25 (Ians) Luis Suarez has slammed Ronald Koeman for lacking personality and also hit out at former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu after winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid.
The 34-year-old striker was controversially allowed to leave Barca for domestic rivals Atletico after six successful seasons at Camp Nou.
Suarez responded by firing in 21 goals in 32 league matches for Atletico, including two in their final two matches in priceless wins against Osasuna and Real Valladolid, reports Dpa.
The Uruguay forward has regularly discussed how hurt he was by his Barca departure and looked at it from a fresh angle after showing his emotion when Atletico got over the line to claim league glory.

Barcelona, March 4 (Ians) Fc Barcelona overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to book their place in the final of Spain's Copa del Rey knockout competition with a 3-0 win over Sevilla after an enthralling and controversial game at the Camp Nou.
Pedri was a surprise starter for Barca just days after being diagnosed with a calf injury, while Tomas Vaclik returned in goal for Sevilla on Wednesday, Xinhua news reports.
Barca started strongly and Dembele sent two shots over the bar before opening the scoring in the 12th minute when he was allowed space to twist and turn before producing a powerful shot which left Vaclik rooted to the spot.
Sevilla were unable to string any passes together due to Barca's pressure and consequently, Barca continued to lay siege on the Sevilla goal.

Barcelona, Feb 17 (Ians) Fc Barcelona's chances of winning this season's Champions League all but evaporated on Tuesday night after they suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Paris Saint Germain.
Psg striker Kylian Mbappe helped his side's supporters forget the absence of Neymar and Angel Di Maria with a hat-trick that left Barca needing to score four goals in the return leg to highlight the club's recent decline.
Barca coach Ronald Koeman took a big risk in bringing Gerard Pique back into his starting 11 after over four months out with a knee injury, while Sergino Dest was also back at right-back after injury.
Barca actually took the lead from the penalty spot on 27 minutes, with Lionel Messi slotting home after Frenkie de Jong had his heel clipped in the Psg area and Ousmane Dembele then missed a chance to make it 2-0 for Barca as Keylor Navas made a good save in the 29th minute.

Madrid, Feb 4 (Ians) Fc Barcelona have moved into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, coming back from two goals down to beat Granada 5-3.
Barcelona on Wednesday night trailed 2-0 in the 88th minute before an own goal and a header from Jordi Alba saw them take the game to extra time, reports Xinhua news agency.
Barcelona started strongly with Lionel Messi seeing a shot blocked by Granada keeper Aaron, who also tipped Griezmann's follow-up effort over the bar.
Ronald Koeman had made his side's intentions clear by fielding virtually his strongest side with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in goal ahead of Neto, who had played in previous rounds.
Aaron did well to save a Messi free-kick as Barca dominated, but a bad error from Samuel Umtiti, who failed to clear under pressure, gifted the ball to Granada and Kenedy slotted home from close range.

Barcelona, Dec 30 (Ians) Fc Barcelona will be without forward Philippe Coutinho for 8-10 weeks after tests on Wednesday showed the Brazilian damaged the meniscus ligament during Tuesday's 1-1 draw at home with Eibar.
Coutinho had to limp out of the game in the closing minutes, leaving his side to end the game with 10 men after only going on as a 65th-minute substitute. On Wednesday morning, tests confirmed early impressions that Coutinho will need an operation to repair the damage, Xinhua news reports.
"He has suffered an injury to the external meniscus ligament of his left knee. The treatment required an intervention with arthroscope, which will be carried out in the coming days," confirmed the Barca website.
The injury is another major setback for Barca coach Ronald Koeman, who is already without long-term injury victims Ansu Fati, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto.

Oh how I wish the title of this article could be different. Sadly when England come up against Germany in any competition (especially in a semi-final) there’s a good chance it will end in defeat. Sad but true. Before the game, I let myself get carried away thinking of different titles for this piece on English football, such as ‘England’s Bright Future’, or ‘Bring on Russia’. But unfortunately as soon as the referee blew his whistle for the end of extra time, the title wrote itself.
After the major success of England winning the U20 ‘s World Cup, the nation inevitably turned their attention to the U21’s European Championships. The U20’s 1-0 win over Venezuela meant it was England’s biggest international title since Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup in 1966. That’s depressing. Not taking anything away from the U20’s impressive feat, but surely...

On Saturday, Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace welcomed Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side to Selhurst Park in a game that would have seen the twelfth placed Saints leapfrog sixth placed Palace with a win. Only two points separated the teams so there would be plenty to play for. Southampton had generally enjoyed their trips to Selhurst, having returned victorious on their previous three visits to SE25, while Palace would be looking to gain their first ever Premier League win over Southampton at the eighth attempt.
Could Palace, rejuvenated after their impressive performances in their 1-1 draw against Everton and 5-1 demolition of Newcastle, claim the win? Or would Southampton be able to turn their fortunes around after four successive games without a win – a run that included the 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool in the League Cup?

Don’t worry, I’m not going to go all Mike Williamson again as I’ve been presented with incontrovertible video evidence from last September (where the Saints beat Newcastle 4-0) strongly suggesting that...

Steve McClaren’s competitive Newcastle United career has started with a spirited draw against Ronald Koeman’s Southampton.
The Magpies came flying out the blocks against the Saints with a point to prove and pressed, counter-attacked and dominated possession for a good 15 minutes. Their new-season adrenaline rush was squashed by Graziano Pelle’s towering header in which Chancel Mbemba – who jumped to his optimum height – was nowhere near even making a challenge.
But, unlike many of the matches under Alan Pardew and John Carver, the positive passage of play returned to the Magpies after going a goal behind and a chested finish from Papiss Cisse and a bullet-header from Georginio Wijnaldum either side of half-time put the Magpies deservedly in front. From there, Newcastle battled every second ball and a refreshing tenacity swept across St James’ Park as they searched for an opening-day win.

Who would you rather play for if you were a professional footballer? Newcastle United or Southampton?
The Magpies offers a chance to play in front of 52,000 adoring fans, wear the famous black-and-white stripes and join the Mike Ashley rollercoaster ride that doesn’t tend to slow down. Southampton can give you the opportunity to work with one of the finest midfielders ever to have played the game (Ronald Koeman… not Steven Davis), play European football and have Graziano Pelle as your wingman.
Tough call? It’s remarkable to think that Southampton were playing League One football in 2010 and now they’re a more prosperous employer than Newcastle. The Saints are strong favourites to win the first match of the 2015-16 Barclays Premier League season against the Magpies this Sunday (1.30pm kick-off) and continue to build on their seventh-place finish last year.

This time last year doom and gloom stained the walls of the St Mary’s Stadium as Southampton’s squad was carefully dissected by bigger teams with more trophies, more money and more Brendan Rodgers than them.
Everyone wrote them off and for good reason; they had lost the core of their side that included manager Mauricio Pochettino moving to Tottenham Hotspur, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert leaving for Liverpool, and Luke Shaw popping off to Manchester United. Behind the scenes, Southampton were carefully rebuilding and the appointment of Ronald Koeman, acquisitions of Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic, and a fearless refusal to accept they were beaten ended with the Saints finishing seventh in the Barclays Premier League.
This season, there is no underdog status or sympathetic transition for Koeman – and Newcastle United will be fully aware of Dutch manager’s slick and adventurous playing style.

The pre-season is over and Newcastle United begin their Barclays Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon against Southampton at St James’ Park (1.30pm kick-off).
Steve McClaren takes charge of his first competitive match as Magpies boss and he still has decision headaches ahead of the fixture. Does he start new signings Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba? And does he play his recently-confirmed club captain Fabricio Coloccini, despite the fact the centre-back failed to feature for a single minute of pre-season football?
Ronald Koeman’s Saints meanwhile arrive in the North East buoyed by the fact they have just qualified for the Europa League with a comfortable 5-0 aggregate victory over Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem – continuing the excellent form which saw them finish in seventh place last season.

Steve McClaren has hinted that he shares former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew’s views of the Europa League – and also those supposedly held within the corridors of power at St James’ park – believing it “hinders” Barclays Premier League clubs as “the seasons goes on”.
Back in December 2013, Pardew admitted that the Europa League could become a “massive problem” to Premier League sides and that, although he wanted to qualify for the competition with Newcastle, the club should be “wary” of it.
Talking about the fact the Magpies face a Southampton side who have just qualified for the next round of the Europa League on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off), McClaren stated that although European competition does not harm sides on the opening weekend, it will have a negative impact as the campaign progresses.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren insists the Magpies “mean business” this season – and has not ruled out strengthening his squad further once he assesses his players after the “first few games”.
The ex-England boss spoke at his first pre-match Barclays Premier League press conference as Newcastle head coach on Thursday ahead of Southampton’s visit to St James’ Park on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off).
While explaining that his squad’s “attitude and work” has been good, McClaren did not rule out potentially heading back into the transfer market if he decides Newcastle still need to strengthen once he judges them during the first few Premier League games.

Speaking on Thursday, McClaren said:
“I’m pleased with the work we’ve done, the squad and their attitude. We’ll only know if we’re ready (for the start of the season) on Sunday when the game begins.

Morgan Schneiderlin signing for Manchester United is a strange one. The former Southampton midfielder is clearly a very talented footballer and certainly gives Louis van Gaal a midfield presence that was lacking last season. He has made more tackles than any other player in the Premier League over the past three seasons and is a reliable, steady and disciplined £25 million signing. What he hasn’t done is played any Champions League football and that could prove to be a problem as Manchester United aim to regain their place at the top of the football stratosphere.
Maybe it’s the fact that Bastian Schweinsteiger’s move to Old Trafford was announced at roughly the same time as the Frenchman’s transfer and it surreptitiously created a comparison war in which there is only one winner. When the Bayern Munich legend signed for the Red Devils an unforced...

Georginio Wijnaldum has been warned against joining Newcastle United by a fellow Dutchman at Southampton – with Erwin Koeman claiming such a move would be bad for the midfielder because the Magpies are “structurally wrong” at the moment.
The brother of Saints boss Ronald Koeman, Dutchman Erwin is assistant coach at the Premier League club and he has advised Wijnaldum against opting for a move to Tyneside this summer.
Koeman managed Wijnaldum at Feyenoord when he was first coming through the youth ranks there and breaking into the first team, and he does not believe the 24-year-old Dutch international should leave Psv Eindhoven this summer.

Newcastle are reportedly close to agreeing a fee in the region of between £11 million and £14 million for Wijnaldum, although nothing has yet been finalised.

Tipped pre-season to struggle, perhaps even looking at relegation, Southampton continue to defy those predictions with their ongoing form. Wins against Arsenal and Manchester United in January saw Ronald Koeman winning his second Manager Of The Month award.
However, a combination of dodgy refereeing and a brilliant Coutinho goal this weekend resulted in defeat to Liverpool and the club finally dropping from the top four. Just four points now separate third and sixth place. Saints’ challenge for a Champions League spot is getting a whole lot harder.
Since England was allowed four teams in Europe’s premier club competition in 2002/03, there have been 53 qualifying clubs, 49 of which have been the big 5 – Man United, Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, and Liverpool. Only Newcastle, twice, Tottenham, once, and Everton, in the year England had five qualifiers, have managed to break that dominance.

Southampton have now finally confirmed that Filip Djuricic has signed on loan for the remainder of the season after ending his loan deal with Mainz and joining from parnt club Benfica.
The player had been spoken of in glowing terms in the past few years, but lost his way somewhat in Portugal and hasn’t settled in Germany. He did score 20 goals in 99 appearances from Heerenveen and Ronald Koeman will be very familiar with what he can offer to Southampton after his time in the Dutch league.
Quite how he will slot into the team remains to be seen, but it would appear that he’s been ear-marked as competition for the attacking midfield roles behind Graziano Pelle to help him get on the ball a bit more. There was an option for Mainz to make his loan deal permanent for around £10m, so there is clearly...

With the January transfer window about to open, we are about to enter a silly season on transfers. Clubs pushing for honours will be looking for the final piece of the puzzle to give them the edge over their rivals, those at the bottom will be desperate to make the signings to pull them out of the drop zone.
Having begun the season amongst many pundits’ candidates for relegation and now instead flying high in fourth place going into the new year, Southampton are not so obviously in need of new additions. However, the need to maintain this, perhaps unexpected, early momentum with a squad that is undoubtedly thin in places makes Saints a club that could use a couple of well chosen signings in January.

Off the back of being named September’s Manager of the Month on Friday, Ronald Koeman guided Southampton to their biggest ever win in the top flight, as Saints beat Sunderland 8-0 this weekend.
Southampton, who last won by the same scoreline against Northampton Town in the Third Division South way back in December 1921, now become only the fifth team since the inception of the Premier League to win by at least an eight goal margin. They follow Manchester United’s 9-0 win over Ipswich in 1995, along with Newcastle, Tottenham and Chelsea who have all won by eight in the last two decades.
Koeman had described Sunderland as “strong opponents with a good defence” in the build up to the game, while after the match he told the press that: “I was not happy with how we started the game. Sunderland was the dominant team”.

Southampton’s strong opening to their Premier League campaign this season has been rewarded with a duo of September monthly awards. New boss Ronald Koeman, in only his third month in the job, took home the Manager of the Month award, while £8.8 million striker Graziano Pelle picked up September’s Player of the Month.
September saw Southampton achieve a 100% record and rise as high as 2nd in the league. All three teams beaten in the Premier League were also managed by ex-Saints with Qpr’s Harry Redknapp a recipient of this same award in March 2005 while Southampton boss, Swansea’s Garry Monk having spent seven years as a Saints player, and Newcastle’s Alan Pardew (2012 Manager of the Season) having joined the Magpies after being fired from Saints in 2010.

Southampton may be riding high in the Premier League right now under new manager Ronald Koeman, but Saints fans have had got used to never being too settled. After Ted Bates (“Mr. Southampton”) and his protege-successor Lawrie McMenemy built the team up through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, establishing Saints as a top flight club, winning the Fa Cup and finishing as high as second in the league over a thirty year period in which they were the club’s only managers, the thirty years since have been far less stable.
In that time 24 managers have passed through the doors of The Dell and latterly the St. Mary’s Stadium, including three in as many years recently. Those thirty years have been something of a rollercoaster of success and failure with both types of manager often leaving as quickly as they arrived.

It’s never easy being a manager newly arriving in the Premier League at the start of the season, especially as the previous incumbent of the managerial hot seat has probably left things a little chaotic. With all eyes on you and little time to make your mark, it’s vitally important to make a strong start to the new campaign.
This season saw the arrival in England of two highly regarded Dutch managers with similar backgrounds: Louis van Gaal at Manchester United and Ronald Koeman at Southampton.
Both men enjoyed success in Holland, each winning multiple titles as manager of Ajax, in between which Koeman served as assistant manager to Van Gaal in a successful two year spell at Barcelona. More recently Koeman took over from Van Gaal after the latter had won the 2009 title with Az Alkmaar, while his Feyernoord team provided...

The Mirror have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur will go back to Southampton in January next year with a fourth bid for French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
In August this year, the Lilywhites’ new manager and former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino had three £20 million bids rejected for the France star, as he hoped his former club would cave in as the transfer window’s closure loomed.
New Southampton boss Ronald Koeman insisted all summer that, amidst a mass exodus of the Saints’ best players, Schneiderlin would be going nowhere – and he is sticking with that stance to this day – but his resolve will again be tested in January when the White Hart Lane club return and attempt to snap him up again.

Ronald Koeman made a couple of starting changes to his side that beat West Ham last week – seeing him choose new signing Toby Aldeweireld in favour of Maya Yoshida and Jack Cork ahead of James Ward Prowse in central midfield.

While the vast majority of the media coverage as the transfer window closed was on Manchester United’s acquisition of Falcao and Daley Blind, plenty of other clubs have been busy putting the final pieces of their squads together.
Even with an encouraging 3-1 win at West Ham this weekend, it is clear that Ronald Koeman’s Southampton are both in need of strengthening and in possession of a huge amount of spending money after the summer departures of five key players. Saints, therefore, proved one of the busier clubs on deadline day with two new players coming in to St. Mary’s and five going out.

Southampton’s difficult summer has seen the loss of not just their highly rated manager, but a raft of key players including centre forward Rickie Lambert. Fortunately the appointment of former Ajax and Barcelona centre back Ronald Koeman as the new boss has instilled some sense of cautious optimism amongst Saints fans. The Dutch manager’s knowledge of the top players in his home league has helped Saints capture some useful new talent.
Italian forward Graziano Pelle arrived for a fee of around £9 million in July with an impressive goalscoring rate for Koeman’s former club Feyernoord – 50 goals in 57 Eredivisie games. For many, it looks like Pelle could be the answer to Saints’ goalscoring needs in the absence of Lambert. According to Goal, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is still determined to land his former Southampton midfield enforcer Morgan Schneiderlin.
The French international midfielder excelled under the Argentinian and, despite wanting to trim his squad and despite having an abundance of central players, it is still believed that Pochettino is willing to part with £17 million to land his man – though Southampton still insist he isn’t for sale.
Earlier this summer, after Schneiderlin had handed in a transfer list at the St. Mary’s Stadium, he took to Twitter to announce his dissatisfaction at the fact it was rejected (see below).

Liverpool and Southampton begin their respective seasons tomorrow with a 1:30 kick-off at Anfield. Early last season Saints came to the famous Liverpool stadium and emerged with an impressive 1-0 win that signaled the ambitions of Mauricio Pochettino’s talented young side. In the long run, though, both clubs enjoyed their best season in recent memory, with Liverpool mounting a serious title challenge before finishing 2nd and Southampton managing 8th place in just their second season back in the top flight.
Both have had a troubled summer, however, with their success last season breeding unwelcome interest in their star players from bigger clubs. While the lengthy saga of Luis Suarez’s up and down summer has resulted in his £75 million move to Barcelona, the Reds have had to restructure with a number of new players coming in.

In particular, Brendan Rodgers has looked...

Having lost five key players over a summer selling spree, Southampton have earned a cool £92 million in spending money and, with the Premier League season about to kick off this weekend, it seems that they are finally feeling the pressure to start re-investing that cash in building up a new squad.
Last Friday saw the announcement of the £10 million signing of Celtic and England goalkeeper Fraser Forster and today Saints have added two more players to their still slender squad for a combined cost of £18 million. Hull City striker Shane Long and Steaua Bucharest defender Florin Gardos join Forster, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, and Saphir Taider as new additions to this season’s Saints squad.
Long, whose undisclosed transfer fee is believed to be around £12 million, had only joined the Tigers from West Brom in the January transfer window for £6 million, so it...

After seemingly weeks of frustration in the transfer market that began with the confusion over Fabio Borini’s impending move to the North East from Liverpool, Sunderland might be on the verge of a break-through, and something of a coup.
With reports that the end of the protracted Jack Rodwell saga – which at one point saw him linked to pretty much half of the Premier League – is about to come to an end, the Black Cats have been made strong favourites to sign the former Everton midfielder. That would see Gus Poyet’s men beat both Southampton and Napoli to the signing in what would be a significant statement of intent for the North Easterners.
Having made an ill-conceived move to Man City in the wake of impressive form for Everton, Rodwell has seen his chances limited, to say the least, as yet another English prospect...

Fresh from seeing his entire team sold to Southampterpool – sorry Liverpool – Ronald Koeman has set his sights on bringing two young Gunners to the south coast to join fellow new signings Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle in what must be the quietest dressing room in the Premier League.
As Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin presumably stand by the door with their suitcases packed ready for moves to either Liverpool (of course) or Tottenham, it looks like Carl Jenkinson and highly-rated German Serge Gnabry might be heading into the club to fill up some of the first-team spaces vacated by Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren, Callum Chambers and the six unluckiest released players on the not-retained list in the club’s history.
Flush with unimaginable wealth after selling almost all of their prized assets, Koeman will no doubt be hoping to add...

According to Sky Sport’s Amy Lewis‘s sources, Southampton have offered injured striker Jay Rodriguez a new 5 year deal to stay at the club. The news was broken on Lewis’s Twitter account four days ago and has since gone wider on the social media sphere.
Rodriguez, 24, has recently been rumoured to be lined up by Brendan Rogers to join Liverpool duo Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert – who both left Saints for the Kop a couple of months ago.
Rogers has been given a massive transfer kitty to spend after Luiz Suarez’s departure for Barcelona for around £75 million and Saints seemed to have responded to the threat of potentially losing a third player to Liverpool by offering the former Burnley player a new contract.

With Southampton looking to rebuild after a summer that has seen their top talents leave the club, Graziano Pelle has signed for the Saints from Feyenoord for a fee believed to be in the region of £9 million, according to the Express. The striker, who scored 50 league goals in 57 Eredivisie games across two seasons for the Dutch side, reunites with his old manager Ronald Koeman on a three-year deal at St. Mary’s.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Pelle said:
“I’m really happy that it’s finally signed.
“I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year.”

Graziano Pelle’s move from Dutch team Feyenoord has reportedly stalled after Southampton have stopped short of the £8 million asking price, according to Goal.
The 28 year-old striker, who netted 23 goals in 28 appearances last season for Feyenoord, has been on the new Southampton manager Ronald Koeman’s radar since taking over from previous manager Mauricio Pochettino earlier this month.
According to Sky Sports, Southampton launched a first bid for the front-man in the region of €12 million last week.
Pelle has been tipped to be Southampton’s primary transfer target to replace Rickie Lambert after the 32 year-old striker parted ways with the club and followed his childhood dream to sign for Liverpool last month.
Southampton, who have also lost Luke Shaw and attacking midfielder Adam Lallana, and are on the verge of potentially losing Dejan Lovren and Morgan Schneiderlin before the start of the new season,...

Arsenal are set to do battle with London rivals Tottenham and Italian side Napoli in the £20 million race for Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin, according to the Express.
Schneiderlin is currently on World Cup duty with France but has been linked with a summer switch from the Saints following a stand-out season for the south coast club last term.
New Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is facing a battle to hold on to his star players having already lost Luke Shaw to Manchester United and Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana to Liverpool.
The Dutchman is determined not to lose any more of his players until he has bought in replacements and their valuations are met.
To rub salt in the wounds, former Saints chief Mauricio Pochettino is also lining up a move for Schneiderlin with new club Tottenham, while reports in Italy claim Napoli are interested too.
