Throughout the first episode of “Coyote,” I kept waiting for a moment that might surprise me. Surely, I thought, this swashbuckling tale of a recently retired Border Patrol agent (Michael Chiklis) has more to offer than bursts of violence and basic platitudes about right and wrong. Surely, I hoped, there might be different layers to this series than meets the eye. And yet by the end of four episodes, no such moment came. Created by Michael Carnes, Josh Gilbert and showrunner David Graziano, “Coyote” sets itself up as an incisive character drama about a man who stumbles into a life and death situation that forces his black and white worldview to become gray. Instead, it comes off as a self-serious Western fantasy that’s more concerned with shocking its audience than making any sense.

One of the first scenes in “Coyote,” the new CBS All Access series about an American border patrol officer who’s forced to work for a Mexican cartel, shows Michael Chiklis taking a shit. Stood up for a meeting, the gruff, tough-talking, body-armored agent flees to the nearest public restroom, and — having threatened to buy a moving box and “take a shit in that instead” if the U-Haul desk agent doesn’t make an exception to his customers only restroom policy — Bailey “Ben” Clemens stares at his outstretched foot in contemplative respite. A brown water spot gurgles on the floor. The busted stall door hangs from its hinges. Ben exhales in disgust.
But Ben’s frustration isn’t with the state of the bathroom he’s chosen. It’s with what that bubbling water indicates: a secret tunnel, leading under the building and out past the border wall next door.

Paramount Network eyes a Breaking Bad dynamic for border crime series Coyote, which will star Michael Chiklis.
Michael Chiklis, a name widely associated with acclaimed crime shows, is set to star in Coyote, an intriguing TV project brandishing a premise pertinent to today’s news headlines, for the burgeoning cable channel, Paramount Network.
Coyote will see Chiklis – in a way akin to his legendary run as tortured bent cop, Vic Mackey on The Shield – headline in a dark character study, as Variety reports. Here, he will play United States Border Agent Ben Clemens, who on the day of his mandatory retirement, discovers a tunnel used for black market smuggling into the United States from Mexico. After choosing to take advantage of this Narnia-like portal for illicit activity, Clemens finds himself targeted by an old enemy made on the job, a criminal mastermind he’s spent his career chasing.

The players: Director: Roger Kumble, Writers: Michael Carnes, Josh Gilbert, Cast: Brendan Fraser, Brooke Shields, Matt Prokop, Ken Jeong.
Facts of interest: None whatsoever.
The plot: A real estate developer gets his ass kicked by pissed-off animals when he heads to the woods to build a giant housing community.
Our thoughts: Roger Kumble’s family comedy “Furry Vengeance” will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the new decade’s worst films. In other words, “Furry Vengeance” is a big pile of big-screen crap, and even though the movie tries to send out an environmental message, all it eventually does is ruin its viewers’ brains. So, yeah, don’t take your kids to see this embarrassing failure.

The film has two types of audiences in mind: undiscriminating fans of run-of-the-mill slapstick and small children who demand slaphappy violence. Writers Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert, together with director Roger Kumble, have conceived of an "eco-conscious" comedy, and, indeed, everything about "Furry Vengeance" has a recycled whiff about it — so recycled that each scene, each gag, each of Brendan Fraser's pained facial expressions feel tired, overworked, derivative and, worst of all, grossly, painfully unfunny.
The movie's environmental premise pits the woodland residents of a pristine forest against developers keen to raze the trees and build tracts of suburban housing in their place. Brendan Fraser plays Dan Sanders, the perky overseer of the housing development, a company man eager to please his weasel of a boss, Neal Lyman (Ken Jeong). Before long, though, he's also feeling heat from a particularly wily and persistent raccoon and his furry forest cohabitants...

I mean this is the nicest way possible, but what the hell has happened to Brendan Fraser? Let's all think back to the year 1998 when I was convinced Fraser was going to get the credit as an actor he so deserved after starring in Gods and Monsters. Then, when he took his spot as Indiana Jones' heir apparent in The Mummy, it seemed like he was slated to be the next big thing. But, here we are 10 years later, and let's just say I'm glad I didn't put any money on my earlier claims. Fraser has been happy to hang in the kiddie flick ghetto, and judging by this latest announcement, he has no plans on leaving any time soon. Variety reports that the man has just signed to star in the family-friendly flick Furry Vengeance for Summit Entertainment (since I will give credit where credit is due, I have...

Brendan Fraser, whose latest flick Inkheart didn’t have the best weekend, has signed on to star in Furry Vengeance, a live-action family comedy that Robert Kumble is attached to direct. Fraser will play a real estate developer whose new housing subdivision pushes far into a pristine part of the Oregon wilderness, pitting the developer against a band of angry critters. The script was penned by Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert, who previously wrote the Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott comedy, Mr. Woodcock. Kumble’s directing credits include Cruel Intentions, The Sweetest Thing, Just Friends and College Road Trip. Summit Entertainment and Participant Media are co-financing and co-producing the movie, marking their first collaboration since announcing a multipic distribution deal last week. Robert Simonds (The Wedding Singer) will produce with Keith Goldberg (The Man). Production is slated to start by early summer.

AUSTIN -- You don't have to be a drug fiend or a soldier of the counterculture to find something seriously amiss in the scene depicted in the documentary A/K/A Tommy Chong in which millions of dollars are spent, heavily armed troops employed and (to hear the film's account, anyway) a fairly underhanded sting is concocted to put a man in jail for selling bongs -- right in the middle of a national crisis where terrorists are supposedly Public Enemy No. 1. That is not to say the film has much crossover docu potential. Yet it should play well on a targeted tour of cities with large activist communities. It recently screened at South by Southwest Music Festival & Conference.
First-time filmmaker Josh Gilbert, whose skills behind the camera are rudimentary, might be a bit too close to his subject to do disinterested viewers justice; he clearly is a fan and is making no effort to show both sides of the story he reports. The conflict he depicts is between live-and-let-live nice guys and jackbooted feds, without much room for shades of gray. When the story takes him outside the law-enforcement arena (when he talks of Chong's famous partnership with Cheech Marin, for instance) unpleasant details will be glossed over if mentioned at all.
Still, the facts of Chong's imprisonment are enough to boil the blood, especially as described by some outside experts. Alan Dershowitz, for instance, looks at trial records and insists that Chong's incarceration doesn't reflect his crime so much as the fact that he has become rich and famous by making jokes about drug use; he is being punished for exercising his First Amendment rights.
Gilbert takes the scenic route getting to the facts of the case, first giving an enjoyable primer on Chong's early career and improbable rise to stardom in the 1970s. Appearances on such programs as The Dinah Shore Show remind us just how mainstream Cheech & Chong were, and make it all the more strange to see the man targeted decades later.
When the film moves to the performer's legal troubles, we get an apparently thorough account of the crime followed by a surprising lack of details about the fallout. We're told that Chong made a plea agreement in order to protect his wife and son from prosecution, but we see none of the legal maneuvering that might bring this crime-and-punishment saga to life.
When Chong does go to jail, there are the expected maudlin last-night-of-freedom scenes. But we hear practically nothing about the nine months he spent behind bars, except that -- surprise -- the stoner icon had a lot of fans there, all of whom wanted their picture taken with him.
Gilbert hustles us out of this downer territory to deliver his feel-good conclusion, in which Chong both finds his calling as a drug-policy reformer and takes to the road for a solo stand-up tour. Given what he has been through lately, at least he is not hurting for new material.

After hotly contested bidding wars, Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures are closing multimillion-dollar deals to pick up two spec scripts with Owen Wilson attached to star and produce. Universal is picking up "You, Me and Dupree" by Michael LeSieur, paying about $1.75 million. Paramount Pictures, meanwhile, is paying a sum in the same neighborhood for "Stalker: A Love Story", by writers Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert. The figures increase substantially should the movies get made. Wilson was involved in the development of both projects.

Scribe Howard Franklin has been tapped to pen the urban comedy Testify for Bob Cooper's Landscape Entertainment and New Line Cinema. Testify centers on Billy Robinson, a young man who still lives with his parents in Trenton, N.J., but dreams of being Testify, a famous rap singer with his own record label, clothing line and soft drink. Problems arise when his responsibilities of being an imaginary icon get in the way of his real life. Cooper will produce with Paul Kaufman. Landscape senior vp feature films Karen Lunder will co-produce. The project was brought to New Line by senior vp Kent Alterman, who will oversee the project with vp production Michele Weiss. "Urban comedies have proven to be extremely popular with audiences and have been tremendous moneymakers over the past couple of years," Cooper said. "We feel we have the ideal project in 'Testify' and are working with a terrific talent in Howard Franklin." Also at New Line, Landscape has Leisureworld, being rewritten by Casey McCabe; The Salesman, being written by Dana Gould and starring Will Ferrell; "I Know That You Know That I Know," being written by Harley Peyton and starring Jim Carrey; Lowest Common Denominator, being written by Scot Armstrong; and Mr. Woodcock, written by Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert.
