Jeopardy! delivered a tricky play with words with its Final Jeopardy clue in the Wednesday, December 6 game — or at least it tried to. The category was “Famous Names,” which automatically makes you think of people, although it technically could extend to other things. And the clue did even more work to make the players think it was a human they were talking about. But the “neighs” had it. The answer they were looking for was Seabiscuit, the famous racehorse, but fans online are laughing at how the clue was phrased to throw players off. It was a tight race between Ed Coulson, Kate Freeman, and Patrick Hume in the latest installment of the Champions Wildcard Tournament, with Patrick leading the first two rounds. He got a laugh out of the studio audience and viewers at home when he answered one clue half right. It was volleyed to his competitors, neither of whom got it.

Update: National Cinema Day did 8.5 million admissions off of a Sunday box office that clocked $34M. Admissions wise Cinema Day 2023 was +5% over last year’s 8.1M admissions (which came from $24M Saturday box office). All tickets for all movies and showtimes were $4 vs. last year’s $3.
Overall admissions for this past weekend per EntTelligence were 14.3M ( Comscore repored weekend B.O. was $92.8M). Hence, Cinema Day Sunday repped 59% of all foot traffic. The overall Friday-Sunday admissions of last year’s Labor Day frame were 10.5M (from 3-day box office of $55.6M), with Cinema Day Saturday repping 77% of that frame’s tickets stubs.
The good news here is that the entire box office wasn’t lost this weekend on National Cinema Day. However, those admissions figures do include Sony’s lengthy preview of Gran Turismo. In the same breath more money was made on National Cinema Day than Friday ($28.1M) and Saturday ($30.7M). Overall,...

Over the past few years, a new Christmas ritual has entered my life. I find it easily the most irksome of them all, far outstripping cranberry sauce and Whamageddon. I refer, of course, to the duty that falls to me to review Mrs Brown’s Boys, which never fails to disappointment me in its abject poverty of ambition.
But this year, in honour of the recently departed Victor Lewis-Smith, the brilliant satirist and the finest television critic of our times, I thought I’d try to give Mrs Brown’s Boys a bit of a reappraisal. Lewis-Smith, you may recall, was not only a rare blend of the eloquent, the profane and the downright vicious, but an original thinker, and his take on Mrs Brown’s Boys lay far outside the consensus. He praised it because, in his words, every scene in the “unashamedly Rabelaisian comedy ... brimmed over with so much innocent joy...

If there is one incontrovertible truth, it is that Yale produces some of the worst people on planet Earth. I’m talking about Cameron (Theo James), the lecherous creep terrorizing Sicily’s Four Seasons Taormina in The White Lotus Season Two. That scholarly revelation is perhaps the least surprising one in the HBO limited series’ nerve-wracking finale, which saw not two, but four of these miserable rich bastards wind up dead.

In the spring of 2002, Tobey Maguire became one of Hollywood's biggest stars after taking on the lead role in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man." A rousing box office and critical triumph, "Spider-Man" ushered in a new wave of superhero films, setting the stage for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reign. This success meant there would inevitably be a sequel, and plans for "Spider-Man 2" were quickly underway.
In-between the "Spider-Man" films, Maguire had signed on to the biographical drama "Seabiscuit" from "Pleasantville" director Gary Ross about an undersized Depression-era racehorse who became one of the most successful thoroughbreds of all-time and inspired a struggling nation. The film was met...

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

As for original offerings, Netflix has plenty of those this month as well. Intriguing TV series such as Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified (Aug. 3), Brand New Cherry Flavor (Aug. 13), The Chair (Aug. 20), and Clickbait (Aug.

The Supporting Actress Smackdown of 1938 arrives on Monday (and the voting is close) so get your votes in by Sunday morning! Before we get there it's time for more context of that year in history. The minimum wage was 40¢ an hour, the economy was in recession, and Howard Hughes was busy breaking aviation records. In sports Seabiscuit was the fastest horse, and Joe Louis was the Heavyweight champion of boxing. Meanwhile there was great unease in Europe with Hitler on the march and already claiming Austria and Czechoslovakia for Germany (the US turned a blind eye and European leaders were still trying to appease the madman).
Things were happy at the movies, though, where screwball comedies and adventure films were all the rage. If there's a link on a title, we've already written about the movie. Ready?
When do you think "hung" changed its meaning in the popular vernacular?
Great...

Do they ever get tired of blaming Jihoon for everything?
They wasted no time giving us the answers to what happened to Drascilla on 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way Season 2 Episode 12, but it's getting ridiculous how much Jihoon and Deavan are at odds.
Meanwhile, Bini and Ari are well on their way to also conflicting with each other. And while Brittany and Yazan got a win with Yazan's parents, we still don't know if Jenny and Kenny will experience the same with Sumit and Armando's folks.
Drascilla's Close Call is Jihoon's Downfall
It was a hell of a cliffhanger they left us on when Drascilla darted out into the street, and everyone took off running after her.
The good news is that Drascilla is safe and well. As for the bad news? Well, predictably, this is Jihoon's fault too.
Emotions were running high after Drascilla's scare, so we knew nothing...

Second time’s the charm: Jimmy Kimmel returned for another shot at hosting the Oscars on Sunday night, and he didn’t shy away from the controversies swirling around Hollywood.
After an old-school, black-and-white newsreel intro — which joked that Armie Hammer “was born when a witch put a curse on a Ken doll” and highlighted Salma Hayek bringing the fish guy from The Shape of Water as her date — Kimmel addressed the elephant in the room: last year’s infamous Best Picture envelope mix-up, aka Envelopegate. “This year, when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away,...

The first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the sound mixing category (for 1996’s Braveheart), Anna Behlmer, a 10-time Oscar nominee, talks about “supporting the story” with sound.
What is most misunderstood about sound mixing?
People think that it’s very technical, which it is, but it’s really an art form. To balance a soundscape against images with dialogue and music and sound effects — it’s all supporting the story.
How did that play out in 2003’s Seabiscuit?

Sports movies are a dime a dozen these days, but not all of them are able to claim the highly-coveted title of true stories. Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

Relax, you legions of Hunger Gamers. We have a winner. Hollywood didn’t screw up the film version of Suzanne Collins’ young-adult bestseller about a survival-of-the-fittest reality show that sends home all its teen contestants, save the victor, in body bags. The screen Hunger Games radiates a hot, jumpy energy that’s irresistible. It has epic spectacle, yearning romance, suspense that won’t quit and a shining star in Jennifer Lawrence, who gives us a female warrior worth cheering.
