A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!

After a week’s worth of studios flashing their wallets around, Warner Bros. has emerged victorious in the bidding war for Calamity Hustle, an upcoming action comedy project starring Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum. Similar to the buddy comedies of old, like Lethal Weapon, Adam and Aaron Nee direct Calamity Hustle from their own script. Amazon, Netflix, and Warner Bros. led the pack during the bidding sessions, with WB ultimately winning the prize. Calamity Hustle is hoping to have a franchise appeal.

One day after Deadline revealed that Netflix beat out seven other bidders for an untitled international heist comedy package built around Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy has boarded as director and the 21 Laps principal has joined the roster of producers headed by Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon, Reynolds through his Maximum Effort banner, and Dana Fox, the Lost City scribe who will write the script.
Levy is currently directing Reynolds in Deadpool 3, which Kinberg is producing. Levy and Reynolds also teamed on The Adam Project, which is the third most viewed Netflix film in the streamer of that history. Levy just directed all the episodes and was EP through his 21 Laps on the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See, which just received a Golden Globe nomination.
Molly Milstein and Margy Love will be exec producers. Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur are overseeing at Netflix.

Exclusive: A wild pre-holiday auction for a Ryan Reynolds global heist comedy vehicle is coming to a close, with Netflix winning the deal. Deadline revealed the untitled pitch last week, when the creatives did the rounds to pitch directly — something that hasn’t happened much since the pandemic –and the 7-figure bids began hitting the table. Dana Fox will write the script, and Simon Kinberg is producing with Reynolds.
The pitch is untitled, but I’ve heard it has great parts for an ensemble in the spirit of an Oceans Eleven. It is also set in the international arena. The idea originated from Fox and Kinberg, and they pitched it to Reynolds and Maximum Effort.
There were eight buyers in the mix, and that whittled down to five and finally four before Netflix prevailed. Sources said Fox will be paid mid 7-figures to write it and the producing deals are high 7-figures.

Exclusive: There’s a hot pitch deal in the works that has Ryan Reynolds attached to star and produce with Simon Kinberg. There are seven big bids on the table right now, after a day’s worth of pitching to studios and streamers.
The script will be written by Dana Fox, whose work includes The Lost City and Cruella, and TV series including Home Before Dark and Ben and Kate. The pitch is described as a high-concept ensemble action comedy, with Reynolds as the lead.
This likely will be sorted by early next week, and it will be a big seven-figure deal — an unusual haul for a pitch. Stay tuned.

Emma Stone delivers a powerhouse performance in Yorgos Lanthimos‘ latest hit, “Poor Things.” The Searchlight Pictures production, which releases in US theaters on December 8, showcases Stone as Bella Baxter, a re-animated woman on a quest to discover life and herself. Willem Dafoe‘s scientist brings her back to life while Ramy Youssef and Mark Ruffalo feature as helpers and hinderers in her exploration of life.
But the movie belongs to Stone, who reunites with Lanthimos after they worked together on “The Favourite.” She is once more saying the words of Tony McNamara, who co-wrote “The Favourite” with Deborah Davis and Stone’s “Cruella” with Dana Fox. Stone’s performance has been touted as one of the very best of her career by many critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) declared that Stone will “blow your mind” in the movie, writing: “Nothing overshadows Stone’s odd, amusing and affecting performance as Bella,...

The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. Showrunners have now raised 3 million for the National Network of Abortion Funds in an effort to protect abortion access for anyone who needs abortions, including production employees in abortion-hostile states.
In a letter on Friday, the coalition — which is comprised of nearly 1,500 television showrunners, creators and directors — also announced it had made progress with each of the major studios toward implementing abortion safety protocols for all employees in these states.
“While there is still much work to be done, we can share that all nine studios we contacted are engaging directly and individually with us to address the immediate need for safety, privacy and legal protections for their employees,” the letter reads.

Several talent agencies have joined the fundraiser for abortion relief started by a coalition of showrunners last month.
CAA, WME, UTA and Gersh have each made donations to the Hollywood Fund for Abortion Relief (formerly known as Showrunners for Abortion Relief), which benefits the National Network of Abortion Funds. The agency gifts have ranged from 25,000 to 35,000, and to date the fund has raised 2.6 million of its 5 million goal.
The creative coalition — which currently numbers 1,425 showrunners/creators and directors — first made itself known with a letter sent to studios July 28 demanding written policies to protect production staffers’ abortion access in states where abortion has been declared illegal after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling June 24. In addition to that ongoing exchange with the studios, the creatives raised a 2.5 million seed fund for Nnaf, opening it up to the public Aug. 15 with a...

A coalition of 1,425 showrunners and directors has raised 2.5 million to help women gain access to abortion services in states where they’re now illegal. Organizers of Hollywood4AbortionAccess hope to raise another 2.5 million to help women across the country – not just those working in the entertainment industry. The money will go to the National Network of Abortion Funds.
Organizers are also calling on the major studios to adopt plans to “guarantee that all employees and other production workers in need of emergency reproductive healthcare can be transported expeditiously across state lines” if they live in states where abortions are now illegal in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
Among those taking to social media to support the campaign include Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, JJ Abrams, Mindy Kaling, Judd Apatow, Damon Lindelof, Jesse Williams and Dana Fox using the hashtag @hollywood4abortionaccess.

The rom-com was considered a dead genre when it began to consume itself, generating imitations that paled with each iteration, the predictability unable to overcome the star power. There have been a few sparks of life here and there, but as a film genre, it’s more moribund than not.
So, it’s a bit of a surprise to see one of its queens, Sandra Bullock, starring in a glossy, big budget rom-com after moving away from them for so long. Here, she’s a producer and star and at one point considered it dated given the seven years it was in development (never a good sign). She was right, it is dated and somewhat tired and still as predictable as one would imagine. Still, The Lost City is the first of its kind in a while and when it arrived in March, we could all have used something light and dairy.

When Sandra Bullock was first approached by Paramount about producing and starring in The Lost City, an action-adventure romantic comedy that’s an ode to a disappearing genre, she said thanks, but no thanks. However, she couldn’t stop thinking about the project and went back to the studio with a fix: Reverse the roles and make the leading lady more heroic and bold, and infuse the leading man’s character with feminine sensitivities. It was a move Channing Tatum would welcome when joining the movie about a romance author and her cover model who set out on an adventure.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”

Sunday Am updated: In what is a record opening during the pandemic for a female-driven feature, Paramount’s Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum romantic comedy adventure The Lost City is opening to $31M after a $11.55M Friday and $11.8M Saturday.
While the older female demographic has been known to be cautious about moviegoing during the pandemic, they indeed showed up at 61% overall, with those over 35 repping close to half the crowd. Previously, over Valentine’s Day weekend, two-glossy female targeted movies tried to deliver, but did not in their openings: Death on the Nile ($12.8M) and Marry Me ($7.9M).
Moreover, give it up for an original piece of content opening at the box office off of sheer star power, and not brand IP.
“It’s kind of a throwback,” says Paramount Domestic Distribution Boss Chris Aronson this morning. “But it shows that movies still matter.”

Without yelling at the clouds too loudly, let me just say: the theatrical experience is rough out there. There are still multiple screens dedicated to a certain web-slinging behemoth at any given cineplex. It’s an ever-present reminder that commerce is thriving, and movies for adults are, well, not. The rom-com, and studio comedies in general, have been all but relegated to streaming for some time now, that is if they aren’t chunked up into eight hour-long episodes as content fodder. It’s a hostile environment for a big-budget Sandra Bullock romance vehicle, but here we are. Despite those odds, The Lost City is a respite, an oasis, for anyone just looking to get away.

Sandra Bullock reportedly gave up on sequels thanks to the car (boat?) crash at the box office that was “Speed 2.”
The 1997 follow-up film was so devastating that even Bullock is still thinking about its lack of fandom 25 years later.
“I have one [that] no one came around to and I’m still embarrassed I was in. It’s called ‘Speed 2,'” Bullock told Too Fab while promoting her new film, “The Lost City.” “I’ve been very vocal about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. Slowly going towards an island.”
Bullock continued, “That’s one I wished I hadn’t done and no fans came around, that I know of, except for you,” telling the reporter. Her “Lost City” co-star Daniel Radcliffe, whose famed franchise “Harry Potter” relied on sequels, chimed in to console Bullock.

Watch stars Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and Daniel Radcliffe reflect on Tatum’s cover model character transformation in a new “Becoming Dash” featurette for The Lost City, found above.
Brilliant, but reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure novels featuring handsome cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), who has dedicated his life to embodying the hero character, “Dash.” While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes that she can lead him to the ancient lost city’s treasure from her latest story. Nearly ten years ago, Sandra Bullock pledged she would never again make a sequel to one of her many memorable movies.
It was 2013, the year she and Melissa McCarthy released the buddy cop comedy “The Heat” — which grossed nearly $230 million at the worldwide box office. While simultaneously making the awards rounds for “Gravity” that year, press relentlessly asked if she would return for a second film with McCarthy.
“I’m not doing a sequel to ‘The Heat,'” she said at the time. “I’ve done two sequels. They were horrible. What Melissa and I had was beautiful. We might do another film together. I think we should do a silent film together.”
Film fans and social media users connected the dots, and guessed the two “horrible” sequels Bullock was referring to: the followup to her star-making film “Speed,” which grossed only a third of the original’s domestic box...

The Lost City, directed by Aaron and Adam Nee and written by Oren Uziel, Dana Fox and Adam Nee, comes at the right time to make audiences laugh. I mean, it’s formulaic, but with its slapstick humor and smoldering leads Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the film is a deserved addition to the treasure-hunting adventure film genre.
Loretta Sage (Bullock) is an author of romance novels who just finished a new story. She speaks of adventures, buried treasure, and lost, ancient cities in her books while deciphering dead languages. Since her husband died, she lives as a recluse while harping on the past. Her publicist Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) arranges a book tour featuring the male model representing Dash, a character in her book. His real name is Alan (Tatum), and they do not get along.
Dressed as a Solid Gold dancer, Loretta’s first stop on tour is a disaster.

At first glance, “The Lost City” has all the hallmarks of “Romancing the Stone” repackaged for millennials and Zoomers.
We get Sandra Bullock assuming the Kathleen Turner role as a romance novelist who holds the key to the whereabouts of a remote hidden treasure. Daniel Radcliffe steps into the Danny DeVito part, albeit with more urbanity, as the novelist’s ruthless kidnapper with a passing Napoleon complex, who’s seeking said treasure. And Brad Pitt fills in for Michael Douglas as a raffish man of adventure who comes to the novelist’s rescue — though here in a reduced capacity.
That’s a good thing because Channing Tatum is the one who actually shares top billing with Bullock, and his Fabio-esque character is an original creation that helps the new film steer clear of a potential copyright claim.

Before the world was turned upside down by a global pandemic, Sandra Bullock and Liza Chasin were on the hunt for hidden gold. A script that had been sitting on a shelf for seven long years had just come into their possession. And while not perfect, something shiny and vital was glittering under the surface.
“We knew there was a reason it was sitting on a shelf,” Bullock says. Then came the lightbulb moment. “Oh my God, I see it! I see it! I know what it should be,” she declares. “Then you get really excited, then you panic because you’re absolutely convinced that there are no writers out there that can then bring it to the level we had in our head.”
Luckily for star and producer Bullock and co-producer Liza Chasin, that writer did in fact exist, and her name is Dana Fox. Working on the Oren Uziel script,...

Paramount isn't hesitating to play up the parallels between "The Lost City" and classic comedy adventures like "Romancing the Stone," in the hopes of enticing filmgoers to give the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum team-up vehicle a shot. Whereas a movie like "The Batman" is doing its very best to talk about the scary times we live in, directors Adam and Aaron Nee's action-comedy seems to be far more interested in delivering pure escapism, complete with a welcome punching bag of a villain in the form of an evil-doing "one-percenter."

The SXSW Film Festival is returning to its in-person roots with a vengeance next month. After several years of going virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic, SXSW will be the year’s first major festival and conference event to return its focus to live festivities when it launches from March 11 to March 20. And with Wednesday’s reveal of its full film line-up, what a significant return that will be.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum attempt to fend off a maniacal Daniel Radcliffe in the first trailer for Paramount’s “The Lost City,” premiering in theaters on April 15, 2022.
In the film, Bullock plays Loretta Sage, a novelist who has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure books. She’s reluctant to promote her new book because she’d rather spend her time in the bathtub while drinking Chardonnay with ice. Nevertheless, she agrees to go on tour with Alan (Tatum), the hunky cover model who serves as the face of her series, to meet fans and sell copies of her novel.
“You do know you’re not Dash, right? Dash is a character I made up,” Loretta tells Alan, who does in fact believe he is Dash.

Paramount comedy The Lost City will now open wide three weeks earlier than expected, the studio announced today, as its release date moves from April 15 to March 25, 2022.
Pic was previously set to open against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third installment in Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts franchise, based on the book by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The weekend of the 25th, however, is otherwise unoccupied.
The Paramount feature (formerly titled The Lost City of D) follows a reclusive romance novelist (Sandra Bullock) on a book tour with her cover model (Channing Tatum), watching as the pair get swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them in a cutthroat jungle adventure. It’s said to be in the vein of Robert Zemeckis’ classic Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Since Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland grabbed handfuls of eat me cake to become a ginormous box office smash, Disney have really started their live-action remake train rolling. It seems that with each passing year we have armfuls of new live-action remakes/reboots/prequels/sequels of their animated classics being primed for release. Thus far the results have been consistently enjoyable, if varying, with the finest probably being Jon Favreau’s incredible The Jungle Book in 2016. But, shockingly, their latest offering, Cruella, just might be the best since that point.
Much like Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent, you might say it was a somewhat challenging task to take one of Disney’s nastiest and most iconic villains and make a film about her origins. Naturally people will struggle to have sympathy for an attempted puppy killing fashion magnate, but Craig Gillespie’s very very pleasant surprise Cruella, does something a little different with the material.

Home Before Dark Season 2 premieres on Friday, June 11, and there is a lot to be excited about.
We had the chance to chat with the series creator, Dana Fox, and its leads, Jim Sturgess and Brooklynn Prince.
The second season finds Prince's Hilde Lisko struggling in the wake of the Season 1 finale, when her story about her dad's childhood friend, Richie, hits a stumbling block.
Hilde doesn't want to let go of her hope that she can solve the mystery of his disappearance, bringing peace to her dad with the resolution.
Her father, Matt Lisko (Sturgess), wants Hilde to distance herself from the mystery because he knows how much it hurts to chase a story that doesn't pan out, and he also knows that the more personal a story gets, the harder it is to pull yourself away from it.
He wants to protect his daughter, and you cannot fault him for that.

A few weeks ago, there was every reason to be skeptical about “Cruella.” The creative track record for live-action remakes of Disney animated films was middling to dismal. And this wasn’t even a remake of the winsome 1961 cartoon “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. The new film was to be an idiosyncratic spin-off origin story, clocking in at two hours and 14 minutes. But as audiences have been discovering, “Cruella” isn’t just better than you might have expected. It’s a mordantly witty and rousing delight: the definition of how to make an IP franchise movie with a touch of soul, a kiddie movie that adults can revel in, and — most astonishingly — a Disney movie that’s darkly insolent enough to tickle your punk funny bone. As the mainstream movie world returns to life, here are six thoughts on the minor miracle of “Cruella.”
1. It may be the best movie of the year so far.

A “Cruella” sequel is in the works at Disney, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
While the studio is in early development on the sequel, director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara are expected to return for the follow-up film. The first film was also co-written by Dana Fox.
“Cruella” debuted on May 28 in theaters and Disney+. It has earned $48.5 million globally so far and received positive reviews. It stars Emma Stone as the infamous villain Cruella de Vil, as well as Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, John McCrea and Joel Fry.
“We are very pleased with ‘Cruella’’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson told TheWrap Friday. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend,...

Exclusive: Mason Gooding, Emily Rudd and Lukas Gage are set to join Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse in New Line’s Max Original feature Moonshot.
Chris Winterbauer is attached to direct from a screenplay by Max Taxe. Sprouse’s Riverdale exec producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will produce through Berlanti/Schechter Films along with Jill McElroy and Jenna Sarkin of Entertainment 360.
The romantic comedy with a sci-fi twist is set in a future where Mars is terraformed and colonized by the best humanity has to offer. Two very different college students end up joining forces and sneak onboard a space shuttle to the red planet in order to be united with their significant others.
Mike McGrath of Berlanti/Schechter Films will executive produce alongside Dana Fox. Moonshot is the second feature collaboration between Berlanti/Schechter Films and HBO Max, where they have a four-picture pact, following their Unpregnant released last year.

Two new major releases in A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella helped to breathe life back into the box office last weekend, though results were stymied by the closure of cinemas across Victoria.
Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II was one of the first films to be delayed by the pandemic. Some 14 months later than planned, the John Krasinski-helmed sequel premiered ahead of the 2018 original, topping the box office with $3.1 million from 542 screens. With previews from the previous weekend, it sits on highly respectable $5.2 million.
In the US, where it is Memorial Day weekend, the horror, starring Emily Blunt, Krasinski, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe is expected to post $58 million by Monday.
Despite a simultaneous PVOD release on Disney+, Cruella, starring Emma Stone in the titular role, still drew a respectable crowd for the Mouse House, bowing at no. 2 from $1.5 million from 452, or $1.6 million with previews.
