Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Strangers, The Strangers: Prey At Night, and The Strangers: Chapter One.
Nothing sparks fear in the opening moments of a horror film like the words “based on actual events.” Many horror fans find comfort in reminding ourselves that “it’s just a movie,” but this ominous disclaimer smashes the illusion. Bryan Bertino’s landmark home invasion film, The Strangers, begins with a similar assertion, setting the stage for a night of pure terror. Ominous text delivers upsetting statistics of random crime before introducing us to the film’s victims.
Renny Harlin’s 2024 prequel The Strangers: Chapter One begins with a similar warning, but ups the ante by calculating the number of violent crimes that have occurred since the opening frame. It’s the perfect way to introduce stories designed to upend our collective understanding of personal safety.
Both films follow a trio...

Abigail stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Matthew Goode. Horror comes in many types, from popcorn hell-raisers to deep and thoughtful mental anguish that will stay in our minds long after we’ve watched them. The best kinds, are the ones that tap into what you feel is safe away from the movie world, and bring horror home… and this is one thing that The Strangers did so well.
After returning home to an isolated vacation house after a night out, a couple hear a knock on the door. Seemingly a mistake, they send the people on their way, but it’s not long before a violent house invasion ensues by three masked individuals.
While the start of The Strangers may be slow for some, it does well at setting up a couple whose relationship is on the rocks. Liv...

We all know, of course, what happened on April 15, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts; as thousands of people ran a famous marathon through one of America's oldest and most historic cities, multiple explosions went off near the finish line. Many were killed or injured, and fundraisers have sprung up across the globe to help the community and the victims and their families. And one of the philanthropists lending a hand is one of horror's most beloved figures.
Adam Green, the director of Spiral and Frozen and the mastermind behind the popular slasher films in the Hatchet series, was born and raised in the Boston area in a small picturesque town called Holliston. Green, currently working on his own FearNet original sitcom, Holliston, and the upcoming Chris Columbus (of Goonies fame) film Killer Pizza, opted to plan a three-night fundraising extravaganza in his hometown area.
Green began posting details on his social media as details became available.

If Rock and Shock 2011 doesn't get here soon Glenn Ciano is going to burst. Why is that, you ask? Because Glenn makes his feature film directorial debut with Inkubus, and the film will be having its world premiere this Saturday night at Rock and Shock 2011 in Worchester, Ma and he can't wait to unleash Inkubus on the unsuspecting world.
Headlining a film schedule that includes Chillerama at 5pm and I Am Nancy (introduced by Nancy herself, Heather Langenkamp) at 7pm Inkubus is slotted at the prime 9pm position and will be introduced by director Glenn Ciano and producer Chad A. Verdi.
"Inkubus is a hardcore old-school horror flick," Ciano said. "We want to get out there and deliver a movie to fans we feel they've been waiting 25 years for." And, following their Fans First philosophy (check out the logo for the concept below), The Lab (as Ciano's team calls themselves...

OPENS: Friday, May 30 (Rogue Pictures).
Every now and then a horror film comes along that bucks the going copycat trends and manages to scare up some unique shivers.
Say hello to "The Strangers", a spare, creepily atmospheric psychological thriller with a death grip on the psychological aspect.
First-time director Bryan Bertino -- his script was a quarterfinalist for the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship grant -- has taken a cue from the fright films of the '70s, but unlike others evoking the era, the influences are more character-rooted than derivatively stylized.
Although horror generally has taken a bit of a beating at the boxoffice lately, fans should be able to discern "Strangers" as the real deal, providing Rogue Pictures with a little lucrative "death in the country" counterprogramming to "Sex and the City".
Ostensibly inspired by actual events concerning senseless acts of violence (not that it really matters), the film is set in the secluded South Carolina family vacation home where James (Scott Speedman) was intending to celebrate his engagement to Kristen (Liv Tyler).
But it's apparent from the tension between the couple as they pull up to the house in pitch darkness that things didn't go as planned on the proposal front.
Once inside, things quickly start going bump in the night as it becomes clear they aren't alone.
Like the best of psychological horror in its purest form, there's always the lingering possibility that the terrifying intruders could be manifestations of the lead characters' own suppressed rage.
Not that it's necessary to go there, since Bertino hand delivers the ghoulish goods with a claustrophobic tension and a minimum of gore that has been handily supplanted by a chillingly effective sound schematic.
He also has a surprisingly expressive scream queen in Tyler, who, left alone to her own devices for major stretches in the film, conveys much with little or no dialogue.
That less-is-more approach also works for Speedman's character as well as for those unsettling masked intruders, identified in the credits by the monikers Dollface (Gemma Ward), Pin-Up Girl (Laura Margolis) and the wheezing Man in the Mask (Kip Weeks).
Let the nightmares begin.
PRODUCTION: A Rogue Pictures and Intrepid Pictures presentation of a Vertigo Entertainment/Mandate Pictures production. CAST: Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward, Kip Weeks.
