In a month, Scott Hamilton will learn whether the tumor lurking in his brain has grown, or whether the “little critter” – as the ice skater wryly calls it — is “behaving itself.” Waiting for such news could easily keep a guy up at night, but for the Olympic champ it’s almost an afterthought.
After all, between preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics broadcast, getting ready for a book launch (his third book, Finish First: Winning Changes Everything, is out Feb. 6) and organizing an annual cancer benefit in Nashville this month, “I’ve got too much to do every day to worry,...

Hollywood producer Jason Blum seems to have a Midas touch, turning relatively low-budget horror movies like “Split” and “Get Out” into international blockbusters. Through his Blumhouse Films shingle, Blum has made more than 82 movies — many of them low-cost, high-return genre successes such as “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge.” In a profile in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, writer Ryan Bradley reveals some surprising details about the Hollywood executive, from his mobile office in the back of a Ford van to the original ending for “Get Out” to his longtime love for a certain Stoner. Truth: All it takes to get us psyched for the Olympics is hearing Scott Hamilton's voice for five seconds. The man is still pure joy. In preparation for our PopWatch on Ice coverage of the Vancouver Games, we tuned in for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships over the weekend to see which men and pairs will be representing us. (The ladies and ice dancing competitions are next weekend.) Jeremy Abbott, who delivered what Hamilton referred to as a "beat down" to defend his title, was the talk of Sunday's men's free skate. Except for in my apartment, where...

Evan Lysacek, Jeremy Abbott, Johnny Weir, Ryan Bradley
This weekend saw Spokane, Washington host the U.S. Men's Figure Skating Championships that in large part determined which men the United States would be sending to compete in the Vancouver Olympics next month in Vancouver, Canada.
The top three contenders were all past U.S. National champions and included Evan Lysacek, Jeremy Abbott, and gay fave Johnny Weir. Going in, Lysacek was considered the favorite, but both he and Weir finished behind Abbot who racked up a total of 263.66 points followed by Lysacek at 238.63 and Weir at 232.09 points. U.S. Figure Skating officials also chose the three to represent the U.S at next month's Olympic games.

More important than medals are plane tickets to Vancouver.
I’ll admit I thought the best thing about writing for a gay site would be that I’d never have to cover the sports beat. So the fact that in six months I’ve covered hurling, rugby, and now figure skating is a little disorienting.
But the U.S. National Championships are this weekend, and amongst the top contenders is “flamboyant” Johnny Weir going up against the more “traditionally masculine” Evan Lysacek, the reigning World Champion, and fresh-faced Jeremy Abbott, the reigning U.S. National Champion.
Just looking at titles, Johnny Weir is probably seen as an underdog. But if we were to look at press coverage, we’d think it was an exhibition show for Weir, and nobody else was on the ice.
Men’s Figure Skating has been in a battle between the traditionally masculine and more feminine side for years now.
