As you may have heard, Nikon acquired 100% of the outstanding membership interests of Red.com. This is a move nobody has anticipated. In our opinion, we don’t get it. It seems like a solid exit for Land and Jannard. We can’t see how Red continues to exist. Is this the end of Red?
Red. The End? Red is now 100% belongs to Nikon
Nikon has acquired Red Digital Cinema. All of it! Two companies have published a press release. Red’s press release was way more exaggerated: “In a landmark move, Red Digital Cinema, is excited to announce being acquired by Nikon Corporation (Nikon). The agreement with Nikon, reached with Red’s founder Jim Jannard and President Jarred Land, signifies a new era of innovation and excellence in the professional filmmaking sector”. Nikon on the other hand, sounds more formal: “Nikon Corporation (Nikon) hereby announces its entry into an...

No, this is not the first Red Komodo (“Grossman Gold”), but a new ultra-high-speed camera from Vision Research titled C321 Air. This camera is capable of shooting 1,500 frames per second at a resolution of Full-hd, and it’s designed for the toughest airborne testing environment.
Phantom Miro C321 Air. Picture: Vision Research Phantom Miro C321 Air
Vision Research has introduced its most rugged ultra-high-speed camera – Phantom Miro C321 Air. The C321 Air leverages years of rugged application use in auto crash testing, where every test is critical. It’s designed to withstand harsh environments and repeatedly delivers high-quality images, dedicated to airborne applications. The C321 Air is a compact camera with a Micro-Four-Thirds-sized Cmos sensor that reaches 1,490 Fps at full 1920 x 1080 resolution and higher frame rates at reduced resolutions. While many airborne tests require lower frame rates such as 500fps, higher frame rates give enhanced capability, allowing for more diverse and detailed testing.

Zack Snyder‘s space adventure film “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” will be running for one week (Dec. 15-21) in selected 70mm theaters before debuting on Netflix. However, the question you should ask yourself is if it’s worth watching a film on a giant screen that was shot entirely on Anamorphic T1.5. On the other hand, why not? We all remember Nolan’s Oppenheimer which was shot wide open using IMAX film cameras and was screened on 70mm as well.
Rebel Moon ‘anamorphic’ poster Rebel Moon: 70mm screening
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon which was directed and shot by him (Snyder was the Dp as well), will be playing exclusively on 70mm from Dec. 15-21 at the following locations: Los Angeles (Egyptian Theatre), New York City (Paris Theater), Toronto (TIFF Bell Lightbox) and London (Prince Charles Cinema). The first “Rebel Moon” film streams Dec. 22 on Netflix.

The ultra-requested Face Detection Auto Focus comes to the Red Komodo-x as well. Just after the V-Raptor got it, it was the turn of its smaller brother. Furthermore, the Red CEO announced a new DSMC3 adapter for the DSMC2 Evf. That would be relevant for Raptor and Komodo-x (not Komodo). Last but not least, Kx (Komodo-x) is Netflix-approved.

Red has introduced the new Monochrome version of its Komodo action camera (aka “little beast”). Now, some footage has been released, and it looks gorgeous. Check it out below.

In the next firmware, Red Komodo shooters will get tons of new and exciting stuff. First, the Gio Scope is back (false color straight from the sensor), a new low compression option (Elq), and improved Af (AutoFocus). All the available details are below:
Gio Scope on the Red Komodo. Picture: Red Digital Cinema Red Komodo gets Gio Scope
First, what’s Gio Scope? Gio Scope can be defined as a variation of a false color view using the raw sensor data. Think of it as an exposure tool. Gio Scope is not new and was introduced back in 2014, on firmware 5.3 implemented on the Red Epic Dragon 6K. A lot of cinematographers claim that Gio Scope is the best tool to ensure you aren’t crushing or clipping, particularly in difficult situations, since it shows you exactly what the sensor sees. It’s like a False Color mode that works like a light meter.

Red Digital Cinema’s most recent patent granted two weeks ago, titled Video Image Data Processing In Electronic Devices, joins the other three Red patents related to compressed raw [8,872,933, 9,479,749, 9,787,878]. However, this one seems more general and tries to circulate various sensors and devices. Does Red want to expand its raw compression capabilities to other devices and sensors?

The patent was granted on November 15. 2022 no. 11,503,294 named Video Image Data Processing In Electronic Devices, was filed by Jim Jannard (Red Digital Cinema founder), Jarred Land (Red’s CEO), and Manjunath Subray Baht. The patent presents new methods for compressed raw, that in our opinion, are more general and comprehensive, and related to smartphones, digital cameras, and other devices and sensors (including Foveon). The patent includes familiar schemes like the Red Hydrogen and DSMC2 bodies.
