It's a sad day for polar bears: Knut, the world's most famous polar bear, died Saturday, Mar. 19, in Berlin. 600 Berlin Zoo visitors were horrified when Knut suddenly collapsed, then floated dead in the water, People Pets reports.
The Berlin Zoo bear keeper Heiner Kls says, "He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead." An autopsy will be performed on the 4-year-old to determine the cause of death. Polar bears in captivity have been known to live for at least 30 years.
"This is sad news," Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit tells the tabloid B.Z. "We were all so fond of him."
Knut was born Dec. 5, 2006, and his mother, Tosca, rejected Knut and his twin; his sibling died four days later. The polar bear was then cared for by Thomas Drflein, who hand-raised him. When Drflein died in 2008, a custody battle ensued with...

"He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead," Berlin Zoo bear keeper Heiner Kls told the Associated Press. Its not rocket science that Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan has many firsts and many 'rare honours' attached to him. He added yet another rare honour to his credit, when he recently visited the Rotes Rathaus; Berlin's Town Hall and met its gay mayor Klaus Wowereit. He did so during his visit to Germany, as he is shooting there for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2. Srk also got a rare honour of signing the guest book at the Town Hall. Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich will be honoured posthumously in her native Berlin when she becomes the first person to land a star on Germany's new Walk of Fame.
The actress became a U.S. citizen after moving across the Atlantic and finding fame in the 1930's, but she will be immortalised in her birthplace on Thursday as part of the Berlin Film Festival celebrations.
Festival director Dieter Kosslick and Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit will unveil the star, which will be placed near the city's film museum on Potsdamer Strasse.
Dietrich, who died in 1992 at the age of 90, will be the first of 40 honorees to be remembered on the Walk of Fame. The remaining stars will be revealed this summer.

More Berlinale coverage
Berlin -- Studio Babelsberg's plans to turn Berlin's legendary Tempelhof Airport into a backlot have been grounded by Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit's surprise decision to rent the decommissioned airfield to a fashion trade fair.
The deal, negotiated by the mayor without consulting the Berlin senate, has shot down Babelsberg's plans to bolster its main studio complex outside the city with Tempelhof, which stretches through three-quarters of a mile of prime real estate in central Berlin.
Instead, Bread & Butter, a casual wear trade fair, has secured a 10-year lease on the Tempelhof space. The fair only needs Tempelhof for two months a year, and Berlin is looking for other renters.
But it's game over for Babelsberg, whose plans require a year-round operation.
"(Our) deal is dead," Studio Babelsberg deputy head Christoph Fisser said.
