TORONTO -- Canada's PureTracks launched Tuesday as a homegrown digital music downloading service. Toronto-based Moontaxi Media Inc. launched PureTracks as an online music distributor of content from major labels and Canadian independent labels just one week after a legal Napster relaunched. PureTracks is using Windows Media film management technology and will distribute songs and albums from such major labels as BMG Canada, Sony Music Canada, Universal Music Canada and Warner Music Canada. Canadians and international users will be able to download songs for CAN$1.19 ($0.88) each and albums beginning at CAN$9.99 ($6.50). PureTracks launched with an initial catalog of 175,000 music tracks for digital downloading and expects to have about 300,000 tracks by the end of the year. Consumers had the option of either burning the songs to a CD or copying them to a portable CD player. Among the most popular song downloads Tuesday were Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?," Remy Shand's "A Day in the Shade", Sam Roberts' "Climb Over Me" and Danko Jones' "Take Me Out on a Stretcher".
