Rumor: Spider-man 4 Will Be Set In Battleworld...And Could Pay A Visit To Spider-Island!
Image
Rumours continue to swirl about Marvel Studios' plans for Spider-Man 4. Depending on who you believe, Spidey is teaming up with Venom, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, or perhaps even his fellow Spider-Men, played by the returning Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

There have been rumblings about Spider-Man 4 being set in Battleworld, particularly as the movie is scheduled to be released between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Scooper @MyTimeToShineH has chimed in following this weekend's concept art leaks for Avengers: Doomsday, reiterating previous reports about Spider-Man 4 being a Battleworld story. The insider suggested we can expect "a lot" of Spider-people in the movie and pointed to Spider-Island being a strong possibility.

In the Spider-Island comic book event, The Queen teams up with The Jackal and gives everyone in New York City, including other superheroes, their own spider powers.

That's not to say we'll see something similar in Spider-Man 4,...

What's on TV tonight, Monday, Dec. 30?
Image
While we’re more than ready to jump back into the regular TV schedule, that’s not happening just yet. There is still plenty to watch tonight, Monday, Dec. 30.

Sure, we’d love to tune in to another medical mystery with Dr. Wolf via Brilliant Minds. Maybe you’d love to tune into another case with the NCIS team. The bad news is the shows are currently off the air with new episodes, as the networks continue their winter break. In some good news, there are reruns, holiday specials, and some streaming shows getting linear outings to check out.

Day of the Jackal, NCIS reruns, and more

Mondays usually end with Brilliant Minds, but NBC is doing something a little different tonight. We’re getting an outing of Day of the Jackal. The Peacock series is currently available to binge, but NBC has decided to air the series premiere tonight.

Eddie Redmayne Confirms His Return in ‘Day of the Jackal’ Season 2
Image
We have not yet seen the last of Eddie Redmayne‘s meticulous hitman, who can actually shapeshift whenever the job calls for it. Based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel of the same name, which has already spawn a film in 1973 starring Edward Fox, the show drew in a wide range of audience.

In fact, it was the biggest ever new series to launch on Sky when it premiered, so it’s not a wonder that the second season was greenlit so early in the day.

Plus, they’ve just got to tie up those loose ends or some fans – including me – will never forgive them.

Here’s Everything We Know About Eddie Redmayne’s ‘Day of the Jackal’ Season 2

Fans and critics alike heaped praises on the show when it premiered in November, and the praises did not fail to escape Eddie Redmayne, who plays the cold-blooded assassin in the...

8 Biggest Differences Between Eddie Redmayne's The Day Of The Jackal Show & The 1973 Movie
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Day of the Jackal.

The Day of the Jackal (2024) is the latest adaptation of the 1971 novel by Frederick Forsyth, but there are plenty of differences between the original story, and even the 1973 film. Eddie Redmayne stars as the titular Jackal, a master assassin who completes contract kills on behalf of private clients. While the story features a lot of commonalities with the original story, there are distinct changes from the beginning.

However, the TV show is not the first adaptation to alter the story from the source material. Just two years after the novel was published, a feature film starring Edward Fox as the lead was released, and it took some liberties with the story. Despite this, the 1973 was an attempt at a faithful adaptation, while the modern TV show aimed to update and build on the story which is foundational in the earlier text.

Kraven The Hunter: 8 Easter Eggs, Spider-man References, And Cameos You Need To See - Spoilers
Image
Kraven the Hunter is Sony Pictures' latest critical and commercial flop in its slate of "Sony's Spider-Man Universe" movies. While Venom: The Last Dance performed well enough this past October, this villain's movie is set to be a bigger flop than even Madame Web.

While this is by no means a good movie, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of Easter Eggs for comic book fans. We're not sure how much love went into making this thing, but the filmmakers did find some unexpected ways to pay homage to the Sergei Kravinoff seen on the page.

In this feature, we're breaking down all the biggest references and cameos, including any ties to Spider-Man's world. Does the web-slinger appear and how many of his villains are part of Kraven's story? We delve into that and more.

Check out Kraven the Hunter's biggest Easter Eggs by clicking the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Kraven The Hunter: An Unintentionally Hilarious First Look At Rhino And Chameleon's Final Forms Leaks Online
Image
Kraven the Hunter is now playing in theaters and while the movie has received mostly negative reviews, there are still a surprising number of Easter Eggs for Spider-Man fans to sink their teeth into.

The Foreigner has a significant role in the story, as does Calypso and Sergei Kravinoff's brother, Dimitri (better known to comic book fans as The Chameleon). Then, there's Rhino and repeated mentions of Dr. Miles Warren, the scientist who cloned Spider-Man as The Jackal.

The latter, who is based in New York but never appears, has the ability to give people superpowers. In the case of Aleksei Sytsevich, he undergoes a procedure which cures past physical ailments and grants him the ability to transform into The Rhino.

In the comics, that villain either wears an artificial skin-like suit (his strength is later further enhanced by gamma radiation) or an exoskeleton that's somewhat similar to the one...

How Does Kraven the Hunter Fit in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (Ssu)?
Image
Kraven the Hunter is a Marvel character known for his obsession with the universally beloved Spider-Man. Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), whose real name is Sergei Kravinoff, is the son of a brutal and ruthless Russian crime lord, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). After leaving his home following the death of his mother, Kraven grew up to become the world’s greatest hunter.

As for the film, FandomWire film critic Matt Hambridge called the movie “uninspired, predictable, and generic.” So, how does a film with a 15% critical approval rate on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes (with 49 tomato-approved reviews) fit into the Sony Spider-Man Universe (Ssu)? We explain below!

Does Kraven the Hunter Have a Post-Credits Scene? We Explain!
Image
If you thought Sony would hope that Kraven the Hunter would be the next big franchise for the once-famed studio, think again. When a studio has such disbelief in their product, they do not plan a post-credit;s scene to springboard the franchise. And that is precisely what Sony did, giving J.C. Chandor’s comic book film no mid or post-credits scene to debate.

Our FandomWire film critic Matt Hambidge called the final nail in the Ssu “The sixth and final film entry in the Sony Spider-Man Universe. It’s uninspired, predictable, generic. A collection of committed performances manage to make it watchable. If you’re a completionist, then go see Kraven the Hunter. But you are not missing anything if you decide to skip it.”

Kraven the Hunter Ending Explained (In Detail)

Jim Morrison and The Doors once told us, “This is the end,” mercifully, it looks like Sony may finally pull the plug on their joint marvel experiment. Kraven The Hunter Ending Explained: Rhino Unleashed, New Villains, And How It Sets Up A Sequel - Spoilers
Image
Kraven the Hunter has started rolling out into theaters and, well, it's going to be an interesting weekend for what could end up being Sony's final villain-led movie in a franchise that kinda, sorta launched with 2018's Venom.

Like Madame Web before it, Kraven the Hunter is treated as a "standalone" story so there's no sign of Morbius or The Vulture to see if he fancies joining their team to "do some good." The movie still sets up a sequel, though.

During the final act, crimelord Aleksei Sytsevich and The Foreigner team up to take Kraven down. They've abducted his beloved brother, Dmitri, leaving Kraven and Calypso to gear up for a battle where the odds definitely aren't in their favour.

Kraven lays waste to Sytsevich's goons but is stopped in his tracks by The Foreigner's hypnotic powers; the Hunter imagines he's being surrounded by, ahem, spiders, but is...

The Day Of The Jackal may only be midway through its run on Sky, but more days of the Jackal are already on their way. That's right, folks — after hitting the mark with audiences around the world, becoming the biggest Sky Original of all time here and an instant No. 1 smash on Peacock stateside, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett's Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch led espionage thriller has landed itself a swift Season 2 renewal.

A story of 'analogue spycraft' based on Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel, The Day Of The Jackal follows international assassin The Jackal (Redmayne), who — having just pulled off a spectacular kill in Munich — finds himself contracted to kill a tech billionaire with a God complex (Khalid Abdalla). The Day of the Jackal episode 6 recap
Image
The Day of the Jackal is heating up after an extremely close call at the end of episode 5. We've come a long way since episode 1 when the Jackal had everything under control. The Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) killed Norman Stoke (Richard Dormer) while he was being tortured and interrogated and escaped Bianca (Lashana Lynch) and MI6.

In The Day of the Jackal episode 6, the Jackal finds shelter in a barn, but when he wakes, he’s knocked unconscious by the owner of the property. He’s tied up when he wakes up. The owner, Attila, who doesn’t speak English tries to send him on his way, but then he finds the Jackal’s gun and he drags him into his home to speak to someone and translate what the Jackal is saying.

The Jackal offers to pay the man holding him to let him go, but the other men want their cut.

The Day of the Jackal is now streaming, is it worth the hype? (What critics are saying)
Image
The Day of the Jackal has premiered on Peacock, but is this new thriller worth watching?

The Day of the Jackal was first published in 1971 and was the breakout best-seller by Frederick Forsyth. A 1973 film adaptation followed, quite faithful to the novel, as a pack of French militants hire a mysterious assassin known only as The Jackal to kill French President Charles de Gaulle.

The new Peacock series updates the story with Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as the Jackal, hired to kill a tech billionaire. Lashana Lynch is the British agent tracking him across Europe. It takes a different tact than the original story with a focus on the Jackal's personal life, including  a wife unaware of his true actions.

The show just dropped its first five episodes on Peacock, with another five more coming, so what's the critical response to it?

Why The Day of the Jackal Works Better as a TV Series Than a Movie
Image
Blasting its way to Peacock on November 14, 2024, The Day of the Jackal is a violent TV crime thriller following The Jackal (played by Eddie Redmayne), an ice-cold assassin known for accepting the most dangerous assignments for large sums of money. Redmayne follows Edward Fox and Bruce Willis in portraying the titular killer-for-hire. However, thanks to the long-form narrative, he is given much more leeway to craft the character in conjunction with the Frederick Forsyth novel.

Despite two attempts to adapt Frederick Forsyth's novel, one in 1973 and another in 1997, the 380-page tome covers too much to adapt as a two-hour movie. As such, the 10-episode TV adaptation is a perfect amount of time to develop the character, faithfully adapt the most significant plot points in the novel, and give fans the full experience that Forsyth conceived when it was published in 1971. Here's why The Day of the Jackal works best as a TV show.

The Day Of The Jackal
Image
Episodes viewed: 10 of 10

Streaming on: Sky / Now

Fred Zinnemann’s admirably faithful 1973 adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s The Day Of The Jackal managed two rather unusual feats. It was, on the one hand, a surprising triumph of the mundane, with Michael Lonsdale’s methodical, shoe-leather approach to investigation paying dividends in what was essentially a nation-hopping police procedural. More interesting, though, was the way its dual Pov narrative encouraged audiences to root just as hard for Edward Fox’s cold-blooded assassin — a nameless cypher, about whom we end the film knowing almost nothing. It’s that latter point that Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett has seized upon with this modernised adaptation, electing to properly delve into the character of Forsyth’s chameleonic killer.

We become acquainted with Eddie Redmayne’s exceedingly British gun-for-hire via an extended prologue in which he meticulously sets up and executes a show-stopping kill. After baiting...

The Day of the Jackal TV Review: Lashana Lynch hunts Eddie Redmayne in the remake of the 1973 thriller
Image
Plot: An unrivaled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal, makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.

Review: The Day of the Jackal is a title that resonates even if you have not seen the 1973 film or the novel it was based on. Loosely remade in 1997 as The Jackal, starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere, the core plot of the Frederick Forsyth novel followed a master assassin attempting to kill the President of France and the investigation to stop him. While the original film was a critical and box office success, the dated subject matter has been ripe for a contemporary update. The new Sky/Peacock limited series The Day of the Jackal...

'The Day of the Jackal' Review - A Tense, Well-Crafted Update of a Classic Thriller
Image
Adapting the 1971 Frederick Forsyth novel of the same name, Fred Zinnemann's 1973 thriller The Day of the Jackal follows a far-right plot to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle in 1963, utilizing an assassin who goes by the codename "the Jackal." The book is based on a real-life assassination attempt, albeit the details and hunt are fictionalized. The story has inspired a new series at Peacock, taking a page from the generalities of the original narrative but updated for the present. This iteration is an elegantly crafted thriller that utilizes tight plotting and strong character work to modernize a classic for our contemporary world.

The True Story Behind the Bourne Book Trilogy's Main Villain
Image
Few franchises have proved as influential on the action genre as the original Bourne trilogy did in the early 2000s. Based on the beloved novels by Robert Ludlum, the films proved a drastic shift for spy thrillers, which most at the time associated with the campy aesthetic of 007. Doug Limans work on The Bourne Identity and especially Paul Greengrasss work on the second and third installments felt dark and gritty, which was particularly refreshing in a pre-Batman Begins world. Within a decade, action films were defined by quick cutting, shaky camerawork, and hand-to-hand combat, for both better and worse.

Considering how thoroughly the films popularity has eclipsed that of Robert Ludlum, its probably surprising to learn how different the books actually are. The Bourne Identity makes some changes in compressing the cast of characters but mostly stays true to the books spirit, while Supremacy and Ultimatum can be called adaptations in name only.

Lashana Lynch's New Spy Thriller Proves Who Should Be The Next James Bond & It's Not Who You Think
Image
Lashana Lynch's new spy thriller series inadvertently proves who would be the perfect next James Bond in the as-yet-unnamed Bond 26 but it's not necessarily who fans would expect. As new franchise arrival Nomi, Lynch stole the show in Daniel Craig's last outing as the iconic British agent, the 2021 release No Time To Die. Given that she plays a replacement 007 in the movie, she made a strong case for stepping in for Craig on a permanent basis. However, her latest project proves that the picture is more complicated.

The issue of who will replace Daniel Craig is one of many obstacles facing the next installment in the James Bond franchise. No Time To Die's story killed off Craig's version of the character entirely, necessitating a completely new start for the long-running spy saga. While many have speculated that Bond 26 will be a total reboot, Lynch's impressive...

The Day Of The Jackal Series: Eddie Redmayne Is An Assassin In A Story Of ‘Analogue Spycraft’
Image
It’s been over 50 years since The Day Of The Jackal became a classic of the political thriller genre – a gripping cat-and-mouse pulse-raiser about a master assassin, known simply as ‘The Jackal’, and the officer intent on taking him down. Now, all these years later, the story returns in series form with a stellar duo in those predator-and-prey roles: Eddie Redmayne as the seemingly shape-shifting sniper, and Lashana Lynch as his law-abiding nemesis. The chase is back on.

As Redmayne tells Empire in the Mickey 17 issue, the series both updates the story, now set in the present day, while keeping the old-school nature at the heart of it. “What I love about [the show] is this thrilling, very contemporary quality,” he explains, “but it has that analogue spycraft.” And in series form, the audience really has time to get under the Jackal’s skin. “What Edward Fox does so stunningly [in the ’73 film] is...

“Nearly infinite number of permutations possible in the script”: Far Cry 2 Had to Take Help from Bioshock Writer to Make Open-World Gaming Truly Real and the Rest is History
Image
Right now, Far Cry is currently one of Ubisoft’s longest-running franchises and is still getting new games every couple of years. Ubisoft tries to rediscover it; they try to give gamers a world that is worth exploring and characters worth interacting with. This legacy of having interesting characters, specifically an interesting villain, came from Far Cry 2.

Back then, it was the pinnacle of what was possible if developers invested time in some exciting new technologies. Dunia Engine was a one-of-a-kind game engine; Jackal was a one-of-a-kind villain; and that game’s world was unlike anything players had explored before. But its director explains that the inspiration for that came from a very unexpected place.

Far Cry 2 took a lot of inspiration from a competitor

When the first installment in this franchise was launched back in 2004, it was developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft.

‘Thirteen Ghosts: The Series’ – Dark Castle Hopes to Further Explore the World of the 2001 Horror Movie
Image
When it was released back in 2001, Dark Castle Entertainment’s remake Thirteen Ghosts (stylized as Thir13en Ghosts) didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, scaring up just $68 million worldwide on a sizable production budget of $42 million. Reviews for the film were also largely negative at the time, making it both a financial as well as a critical misfire.

But the times, well, they have changed. Like many horror movies over the years, director Steve Beck’s Thirteen Ghosts has been re-evaluated in the two decades since its original theatrical release, becoming something of a fan favorite here in 2023. Fans have come to appreciate the gruesome effects, the big budget production design, and the titular monsters themselves, which came equipped with their own backstories thanks to a DVD special feature that we’ve written about in the past. And it’s safe to say Dark Castle has noticed this renewed interest.

15 Longest Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Movies remain one of the greatest equalizers, but there's a growing level of excess that continues to creep into cinema. A tight 90-minute film that doesn't belabor itself has become increasingly rare, and in an age where franchise fare and genre epics reign supreme, it's more and more common to have movies that exceed three hours.

Related: Top 10 Best Movies With Extremely Long Runtimes

2022 alone had a nearly three-hour Batman movie, Damien Chazelle's Babylon, and James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water. There are already rumors that the third film in Cameron's sci-fi series will have a nine-hour cut. Audiences have clearly grown more accustomed to lengthy cinematic experiences. Still, there are some especially extreme movies (excluding documentaries and experimental cinema) that truly push the limits of a conventional runtime.

This article includes trailers for movies of various age ratings, some of which depict violence, nudity, and strong language.

Édgar Ramírez to Lead ‘Dr. Death’ Season 2 at Peacock
Image
Édgar Ramírez will star in the second season of “Dr. Death,” Peacock announced Tuesday.

Ramírez will play Paolo Macchiarini, an Italian surgeon who became known for his research into innovative organ transplants, gaining the nickname “Miracle Man,” before accusations of research fraud and unethical experiments destroyed his career. The season will focus on the investigations from fellow researchers into Macchiarini’s surgeries, as well as his relationship with journalist Benita Alexander.

A true crime anthology series, “Dr. Death” is based on a Wondery podcast that explores severe cases of medical malpractice, frequently resulting in the deaths of patients. Season 2 adapts the third season of the podcast, which was released last year. Season 1 of the Peacock series was released last year and starred Joshua Jackson as Christopher Duntsch, a Texas neurosurgeon convicted of maiming and killing 33 patients over the course of his career. Olivier Assayas on Making ‘Wasp Network’ in Cuba ‘During a Very Tense Time’ (Exclusive)
Penélope Cruz, Gael García Bernal, Wagner Moura, Edgar Ramírez, and Ana de Armas in Wasp Network (2019)
Headlined by Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez, “Wasp Network” is world premiering and competing in Venice, but the Cuba-set film was a long-shot to get made because of its political subject and the difficulties in raising financing, director Olivier Assayas said.

“Wasp Network” centers on the true story of Cuban spies in American territory during the 1990s, when anti-Castro groups based in Florida carried out military attacks on Cuba and the Cuban government struck back with the Wasp Network to infiltrate those organizations. Assayas wrote the screenplay, which is based on Fernando Morais’ book, “The Last Soldiers of the Cold War: The Story of the Cuban Five,” published by Companhia das Letras.

Assayas, whose credits include the Golden Globe-winning miniseries “Carlos” and “Personal Shopper,” which won him the best director prize at Cannes, told Variety that Cuban authorities had initially refused to let the film shoot there.

Fred Zinnemann’s counter-assassination thriller remains topflight filmmaking, torn from reality and shot through with an unsentimental dose of political realism. Edward Fox’s implacable killer outwits the combined resources of an entire nation as he stalks his prey, and when bad luck forces him to improvise, he racks up more victims on his kill list.
