Leslie Van Houten was released on parole after 53 years in prison for committing murders as part of the Mason family cult.
Van Houten was recommended for parole multiple times but was denied by the California governor. She is now set to be on parole for a maximum of three years, but after one year she will be reviewed for parole dischargement.
Van Housten first met Charles Manson when she was 19 years old and became a follower of his cult, the “Manson family.”
She was serving seven years to life after murdering Leno Labianca, a supermarket exec, and Rosemary, his wife, in their home in Los Angeles.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has stated he will not challenge the court’s parole decision but disproves it.

Leslie Van Houten, who served more than 50 years in prison on murder and conspiracy convictions in the Charles Manson “family” 1969 killings of Rosemary and Leno Labianca that shocked Hollywood and the nation, was released from a California prison today, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The Cdcr said in a statement that the 73-year-old Van Houten was released “to parole supervision.” Van Houten reportedly was taken to a transitional housing facility.
“Van Houten will have a three-year maximum parole term with a parole discharge review occurring after one year,” according to Cdcr. “For safety and security reasons, Cdcr does not provide information on a person’s time or location of parole release.”
The release comes four days after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said it would no longer challenge the parole. A state appeals court in May rejected Newsom’s most recent of three parole rejections.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday that he won’t ask the state Supreme Court to block parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten.
The governor’s office said it was unlikely that the state’s high court would consider an appeal of a lower court ruling that Van Houten should be released. That means Van Houten will likely be freed after serving 53 years for participating in the murders of Leno and Rosemary Labianca, who were killed in 1969 at their Los Feliz home.
The murders came two nights after the murder of actress Sharon Tate and four others in Benedict Canyon. Van Houten did not participate in the Tate mansion killings.
“More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal killings, the victims’ families still feel the impact,” the statement said.

Leslie Van Houten, 73, who assisted Charles Manson in killing two people, was recommended for parole on Tuesday.
She has been recommended for parole many times since her imprisonment but was rejected each time by former California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and current Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
Van Houten was a member of the cult called the Manson Family. They were convicted of killing nine people, most notably actress Sharon Tate.
Van Houten took part in the 1969 murders of Leno Labianca, who was a supermarket manager, and his wife, Rosemary. She was 19 years old at the time of the murders.

The now 73-year-old was convicted in 1971 and again in 1978, leading to her life imprisonment sentence.
Van Houten is still a danger to society, Newsom maintained. When he rejected her parole, he explained that her explanations for her participation in the Labianca killings were “inconsistent” and “inadequate.

In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.
The Manson killings shook Los Angeles and defined a generation. The story of the Manson family has inspired countless shows and films, including, most recently, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Victoria Pedretti played a character called “Lulu” in the film,...

Before “All in the Family” debuted, there was a profound gap between real life and what was being depicted on TV series.
In his autobiography “Even This I Get to Experience,” Norman Lear wrote, “Until ‘All in the Family’ came along, TV comedy was telling us there was no hunger in America, we had no racial discrimination, there was no unemployment or inflation, no war, no drugs, and the citizenry was happy with whomever happened to be in the White House.”
When Lear and Bud Yorkin pitched “All in the Family” to CBS, that network’s executives were looking for something different — but maybe not That different.
A week before the un-publicized sitcom debuted on Jan. 12, 1971, Variety’s Les Brown summed up the first four months of the new season for the three networks. Brown wrote that CBS had a lock on “the rural middle-American viewership” with its “rustic sitcoms,...

A woman who was part of arguably the most notorious murder spree in California history has been denied parole again.
Leslie Van Houten was part of the Charles Manson group that murdered grocer Leno Labianca and his wife, Rosemary, in Los Feliz the night after another group of Manson followers killed actress Sharon Tate and four others in Beverly Hills. The killing spree has been memorialized in numerous films, television shows and books.
She was recommend for parole in July, but has had her parole recommendation reversed by California Governor Gavin Newsom. It is the fourth time a state governor has blocked her release. She has spent almost five decades in prison for her role in the killings.
Van Houten’s attorney, Rich Pfeiffer, said they will appeal Newsom’s decision.
“This reversal will demonstrate to the courts that there is no way Newsom will let her out,” Pfeiffer said.

Update, October 28: The site of the infamous murder of Leno and Rosemary Labianca by the Charles Manson gang is back on the market. Zak Bagans, the star of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, bought the house last year when it was listed at $1.98 million.
Bagans reportedly bought the home for a film production. But while living there, he claims that he decided the project should not move forward out of respect for the Labianca family.
The two-bedroom, two-bath home is now listed for $2.2 million.

Charles Manson had an easy explanation for why he ordered the deaths of the family of Leno Labianca and residents at Sharon Tate’s house at the hands of his “Family”: “It’s the Beatles, the music they’re putting out,” he told the district attorney who sent him to death row. “These kids listen to this music and pick up the message. It’s subliminal.”
A half-century has passed since the Manson Family carried out the brutal, stunning Tate-labianca murders in August of 1969, and their supposed link to the Beatles remains confounding.

Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood hit movie theaters last week to critical acclaim. The film — starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as the late Sharon Tate — follows Charles Manson and his followers leading up to their two-day killing spree in 1969.
Tarantino, an enthusiastic student of Hollywood history, featured some of Los Angeles’ most iconic hotspots from the 60s in his film — including infamous locales such as the home Tate shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski, where she, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Voytek Frykowski and Steve Parent were murdered by members of the Manson Family.

It’s been 50 years since that terrifying night in August 1969, when four members of the Manson Family broke into the house at 10050 Cielo Drive and killed five people: 18-year-old Steven Parent, who wast there to try to sell a clock radio to an acquaintance in the property’s guesthouse; Wojiciech Frykowski, an aspiring screenwriter and friend of director Roman Polanski; Abigail Folger, Frykowski’s girlfriend and the heiress to the Folger coffee fortune; celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring; and actress Sharon Tate, Polanski’s wife, who was eight months pregnant at...

Doris Day may have singlehandedly saved her son from death at the hands of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, according to a bombshell book.
The Hollywood icon — who died on Monday at the age of 97 — made her only child, the late record producer Terry Melcher, vacate his rental home in Benedict Canyon, California, not long before Manson’s “family” committed the Tate murders there in 1969, Beach Boys frontman Mike Love wrote in his 2016 memoir.
