- 1940: Graduated from university with a degree in economy and got a job in central government.
- 1947: Elected to the Danish Parliament, Folketinget.
- 1947-1950: Served as Secretary of Commerce.
- 1950-1952: Worked at the Danish embassy in Washington D.C.
- 1953-1957: Secretary of the economy and labour.
- 1957-1958: Secretary of foreign trade.
- 1958-62: Secretary of foreign affairs.
- 1962-1972: Leader of Denmark's Social Democratic Party.
- Resigned as Prime Minister on October 3rd 1972 the day after the Danish people voted in favour of joining the EEC. His resignation came as a big surprise to both his cabinet and the general public.
