‘Einstein’ Crime Drama From ‘Monk’ Creator Andy Breckman Lands CBS Pilot Order
Tom Beck in Einstein (2017)
“Einstein,” (working title) a new crime drama from “Monk” creator Andy Breckman, has landed a pilot order at CBS.

The pilot, which is written by Breckman and directed by Randy Zisk, follows “the brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein, who spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases,” according to the logline for the potential series.

In addition to Breckman and Zisk, the project is executive produced by Tariq Jalil; Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia and Laura Beetz (Seven One Studios International). CBS Studios serve as producer.

“Einstein” is the latest pilot to be orded up by CBS, following the single-camera workplace comedy “Dmv.”

CBS Orders Comedy Pilot ‘Dmv,’ to Develop Single-Cam ‘Eternally Yours’ From ‘Ghosts’ Creators
Image
CBS has given out a pilot order to the single-camera workplace comedy “Dmv,” Variety has confirmed. In addition, CBS has opened a writers’ room for another single-cam titled “Eternally Yours.”

Based on the short story from Katherine Heiny, “Dmv” hails from writer Dana Klein, who executive produces with Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling and Robyn Meisinger. According to a series description, “Dmv” is “set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.”

Klein previously created two other sitcoms for CBS entitled “9Jkl” and “Freinds with Better Lives,” both of which Kaplan executive produced. Klein was also a producer on the iconic NBC comedy “Friends” from 2001 to 2004.

“Eternally Yours” is penned by “Ghosts” creators Joe Port and Joe Wiseman who executive produce with Eric Tannenbaum,...

CBS Orders Pilot For ‘Dmv’ Comedy From Dana Klein, Development Room For Vampire Comedy From ‘Ghosts’ Showrunners
Image
Exclusive: CBS is advancing the development of two single-camera comedy projects, Dmv, from the 9Jkl team of co-creator/showrunner Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment and TrillTV, and Eternally Yours (working title), from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, creators/showrunners of the CBS version of Ghosts, and The Tannenbaum Company.

The network has given a pilot order to Dmv and has commissioned a development room for Eternally Yours, both produced by CBS Studios. Port and Wiseman, who have been under an overall deal at CBS Studios since the breakout success of Ghosts, are staying in the supernatural comedy space with Eternally Yours, which revolves around a family of vampires.

The orders are in line with comments CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach made in January and reiterated in June when she said she was expecting to pick up some development rooms and “potentially even a comedy pilot or two” over the summer.

‘Home Economics’ Co-Creator “Hopeful” For New Network Home After Series’ ABC Cancellation
Image
Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, but at least one of its creators has hope it may yet surface somewhere else.

Mike Colton posted to Instagram today to thank everyone for the experience. He followed co-creator John Aboud’s Friday post on the subject.

“Making 42 episodes of Home Economics has been the best experience of my career, and that’s due to our incredible cast, crew and fans,” wrote Colton. “Though the show has run its course at ABC, I’m hopeful the Hayworths will pop up somewhere else, if only so I can continue to embarrass my real-life family. Thank you to those who’ve reached out and expressed your love and support of the show. #LupeForever

‘Home Economics’ Canceled After 3 Seasons on ABC
Topher Grace, Karla Souza, Sasheer Zamata, Caitlin McGee, and Jimmy Tatro in Home Economics (2021)
“Home Economics” has been canceled at ABC after three seasons.

The comedy series, which is based on the life of writer and executive producer Michael Colton, revolved around the heartwarming yet super uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating relationship between three adult siblings: one who’s in the one percent, one who’s middle class and one who’s barely holding on.

The series starred Topher Grace, Caitlin McGee, Jimmy Tatro, Karla Souza and Sasheer Zamata and featured Shiloh Bearman, Jordyn Curet, Chloe Jo Rountree and JeCobi Swain. Grace also executive produced alongside Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company. Jason Wang also served as a coexecutive producer.

“Home Economics” is a coproduction between Lionsgate and ABC Signature.

In addition, ABC will shift the premiere of its upcoming drama series “High Potential” to fall 2024.

The Kaitlin Olson-led detective series, which is based on French series “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (Hpi),” centers...

‘Home Economics’ Canceled After Three Seasons at ABC, New Series ‘High Potential’ Shifts to Fall 2024
Image
ABC has canceled the comedy series “Home Economics” after three seasons, Variety has learned. In addition, the new series “High Potential” starring Kaitlin Olson is now slated to debut in fall 2024.

“Home Economics” aired its third season finale in January of this year, which will now serve as its series finale. The series was one of just two ABC shows that remained on the bubble, with the other being the spinoff “The Rookie: Feds.”

“Home Economics” was a solid performer for ABC but never quite a breakout. ABC picked up the show for a 13 episode third season but then declined to expand the order beyond that. Fans of the show were given a glimmer of hope over the summer when ABC reportedly extended the casts’ options, meaning they were still considering a fourth season, but it ultimately did not come to pass.

Per the official series description, “Home Economics” followed...

‘Home Economics’ Canceled At ABC, ‘High Potential’ Moves To Fall 2024
Image
ABC is making some changes to its lineup following the resolution of the writers strike.

Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.

ABC still has to make decisions on a renewal for The Rookie: Feds and the status of The Good Lawyer, a backdoor-pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor. It passed on four of its pilots in June: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

Lionsgate Suspends Writer and Producer Deals as Hollywood Strike Continues
Paul Feig at an event for Ein Jackpot zum Sterben! (2024)
As the Hollywood strike approaches day 140, Lionsgate is the latest outfit to suspend its writer and producer deals, TheWrap has learned.

The company will continue to pay assistants and development executives until at least Oct. 1, and closer to that date may opt to extend those payments, an individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap.

According to Deadline, which first reported the suspensions, the move affects the studio’s deals with Paul Feig (Feigco Entertainment), Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum (The Tannenbaum Co.), Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (Timberman/Beverly Productions), Michael London (Groundswell Productions) and Joseph Sikora, star of Starz’ “Power” Universe series “Power: Force.”

Lionsgate follows Apple, Warner Bros. TV, Disney Entertainment TV and NBC, all of whom have suspended various deals over the last several weeks.

The move comes ahead of resumed talks between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers,...

Lionsgate Suspends Non-Writing Producer Deals; Assistants & Execs To Be Paid Through At Least End Of Month
Image
Exclusive: Lionsgate Television has joined other studios in suspending overall and first-look deals with non-writing producers who are not rendering services due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I hear those impacted include Paul Feig‘s Feigco Entertainment, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum‘s The Tannenbaum Co., Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly‘s Timberman/Beverly Productions, Michael London‘s Groundswell Productions and Power universe star Joseph Sikora.

According to sources, Lionsgate will continue to pay assistants and development executives under the suspended deals until October 1 at which time payments may be extended if needed. A rep for the studio declined comment.

Other studios that have suspended term deals — predominantly with non-writing executive producers — over the last couple of weeks include Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.

Disney is providing salaries for the impacted assistants through the end of 2023 and development executives through the first week of October.

Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group Signs Unscripted Deal With Sean Perry’s 2500 Media
Sean Perry
Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group has signed an exclusive unscripted deal with Sean Perry’s production company 2500 Media, the company announced Thursday.

Under the agreement, 2500 Media, which focuses on unscripted series, documentaries and scripted projects, will immediately enter into Pilgrim Media Group’s development and production staff. The deal also covers a first look scripted component with Lionsgate Television.

“When I looked around at ways to super charge my new company 2500 Media and deliver high quality production at a reasonable cost, it was clear that locking arms with Lionsgate and Pilgrim was the best and fastest way to accomplish our goals,” Perry said in a statement. “When you see what Kevin Beggs, Sandra Stern and their team have accomplished across Lionsgate Television and my good friend Craig Piligian has built with Pilgrim, it was a no brainer to dive in fully with them.”

‘Home Economics’: ABC Extends Cast Options On Comedy Series That Remains On The Bubble
Image
Some possible optimism here for the future of ABC’s Home Economics. We’ve learned that cast options have been extended beyond the June 30 deadline, possibly indicating that renewal prospects are good for the comedy series that remains on the bubble. There has been no decision on a renewal yet, however, we hear.

ABC, Lionsgate and ABC Signature declined comment.

Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds are the two ABC series that remain in limbo. As we’ve previously reported, after three seasons, Home Economics has performed respectably, especially in the 18-49 demo, even ticking up in the ratings with Abbott Elementary as a lead-in, but it has not found an extra gear.

The comedy from Michael Colton and John Aboud, inspired by Colton’s real-life experiences, documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one in the ultra-rich, one in the middle class and one scraping by.

‘Home Economics’, ‘The Rookie: Feds’ & Backdoor Pilot ‘The Good Lawyer’ Still In Limbo At ABC
Image
ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.

The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

‘The Last O.G.’ Canceled After Four Seasons On TBS
Image
There will be no fifth season for The Last O.G. The Season 4 finale, which aired on December 21, 2021, will now serve as the series finale for the comedy series starring Tracy Morgan, Deadline has confirmed.

According to sources, the decision was made months ago, following the series’ Season 4 run. It is not connected to the current pullout from original scripted programming on TNT and TBS following the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger, which resulted in the decision yesterday not to proceed with production on new TBS series Kill the Orange-Faced Bear starring Damon Wayans Jr. in a cost-cutting move.

Co-created and executive-produced by Oscar-winner Jordan Peele, The Last O.G. followed Tray (Morgan), an ex-con who was shocked to see just how much the world had changed when he was released from a 15-year prison stint. After finding a place to live and new forms of income, Tray continued to meet challenges as...

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Movie Revival Eyed by Roku
Image
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” after getting axed by NBC, may be getting a second life at Roku.

Roku, which has been bulking up its original programming slate, is in discussions with Lionsgate Television, the producer of the musical dramedy, for a movie special bringing back the original cast including star Jane Levy, Variety confirmed.

Roku and Lionsgate reps declined to comment.

Sources cautioned that while Roku and Lionsgate are in talks, there’s no deal signed. The project under discussion would be a two-hour movie special that would hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays. While other reports have said Roku would have the option to pick up “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for a new season, a source familiar with the talks said that’s not on the table and that the movie deal would be a one-off.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was canceled after two seasons at NBC this spring.

Jane Levy in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020)
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is nearing a comeback, though it may be a brief one.

The musical comedy, which was canceled earlier this year by NBC after two seasons, is closing in on a deal with Roku for a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap. The project is being eyed for the holidays.

According to TV Line, which broke the news, if the movie performs well, a potential third season could be in the cards. It is not yet a done deal but is in advanced negotiations. The entire main cast is expected to return, though not all deals are done.

Reps for Roku and Lionsgate, which produces the show with Universal Television, declined to comment. Peacock decided against ordering a third season after it was canceled in May.

Eugenio Derbez will star and produce Netflix‘s Lotería, a family film inspired by the titular card game popular in Latin America and the United States.

‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Releases Cast Amid Efforts To Continue The Story
Image
The options on the cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, headlined by Jane Levy, expired earlier this week, and they have not been extended, I have learned.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lead studio Lionsgate Television has been looking to find a new home for the show since NBC canceled the series three weeks ago after two seasons and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.

I hear conversations are still ongoing, with various options to continue the story of Zoey Clarke explored — series, miniseries or a movie. While none is believed to be close to reality, if any progresses, Lionsgate would need to make new deals with some or all of the Season 2 regular cast, which included Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen.

It Starts On The Page: Read The Pilot Script For ABC’s Comedy ‘Home Economics’
Image
Home Economics became a rare beast when it premiered in April: a broadcast network comedy that rose in ratings over its lead-in. The series, which stars Topher Grace and comes from Lionsgate and ABC Signature, was quickly renewed for a second season in May.

Inspired by the real-life experiences of writer and executive producer Michael Colton, the show, developed by Colton and John Aboud, documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one ultra-rich, one in the middle class, and one scraping by.

In the pilot episode — written by Colton and Aboud and directed by Dean Holland — Tom (played by Grace), a struggling middle-class author, debates whether to risk embarrassment to ask his brother Connor (Jimmy Tatro), who runs a private equity company, for a loan when he needs it.

Fresh from moving to own, the siblings get together and immediately began fighting over Tom’s new book,...

‘The Moodys’ Canceled After Two Seasons at Fox
Image
“The Moodys” has been canceled at Fox after two seasons, Variety has learned.

The series originally debuted in December 2019. The second season debuted on April 1, but Fox pulled it from the schedule with three episodes left around two weeks later. The final episode of the season is currently slated to air this Sunday, June 20. It will now serve as the series finale. The first season consisted of six episodes, while the second season bumped it up to eight.

“The Moodys” got off to a decent start at Fox in its first season, which was centered on Christmas and played up as a holiday event series at the network. Its rating fell off hard going into the second season, essentially halving what the show averaged in the first.

The series starred Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins, Francois Arnaud, Chelsea Frei, Jay Baruchel, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Gerry Dee and Josh Segarra.

‘The Moodys’ Canceled At Fox After Two Seasons
Image
Fox is saying goodbye to The Moodys.

The network will not be bringing the family comedy series, which stars Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, back for a third season.

It’s not a huge surprise after the network quietly pulled it from the schedule after its fifth episode of the second season. The last episode is expected to air on June 20.

The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season in 2019. Fox brought it back for a second season as an ongoing family comedy, but the half-hour starring Denis Leary has struggled to get traction, ranking among the lowest rated Fox series.

Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill, The Moodys follows the tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, Moody family through their misadventures.
