Ari Wallach has made his living as a professional futurist for more than 20 years. What does that mean?
“I work with really large organizations, mostly helping them think about tomorrow — the far-off tomorrows,” Wallach explains on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”
Wallach’s forward-looking intellect is on display in the new PBS docuseries “A Brief History of the Future,” which premiered April 3 on PBS in the U.S. He hosts the series and is an executive producer with Kathryn Murdoch, Wendy Schmidt and DreamCrew, the production banner headed by hip hop superstar Drake. Wallach and Murdoch are partners in Futurific Studios, which makes its debut with “Brief History.” The six-part series studies inventors, entrepreneurs, activists, artists and others who are pursuing innovative solutions to a range of social ills. Notable participants include French President Emmanuel Macron, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy...

A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that a significant portion of new leprosy cases in the United States between 2015 and 2020 appeared to be locally acquired, without clear evidence of zoonotic exposure or traditional risk factors. Disease experts have expressed particular concern over the resurgence of leprosy in Florida.
In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report indicating 159 new cases of leprosy in the United States, with approximately one-fifth of these cases in Florida. Notably, central Florida accounted for 81% of the leprosy cases in the state.
Leprosy results from an infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and primarily impacts the skin, eyes, nose and peripheral nerves. Common symptoms consist of light-colored or red patches on the skin, accompanied by decreased sensation, numbness and weakness in the hands and feet. Fortunately, leprosy can be effectively treated through a six to 12-month course of multi-drug therapy,...

Queen Camilla continued to follow in her late mother-in-law’s footsteps as she hosted a 100th-anniversary celebration for the Poppy Factory on February 15. Camilla met with employees, supporters, veterans, and their family members at Clarence House in Richmond upon Thames. During the event, the 76-year-old cut whipped out a 3-foot sword for a very “royal family” reason.

The Poppy Factory supports veterans through civilian employment opportunities post-war. Founded in 1922, the charity first aided wounded soldiers returning home from World War I. These veterans began creating remembrance wreaths and poppies for the Royal British Legion and the royal family.
Continuing the handmade tradition to this day, the Poppy Factory employs soldiers across England and Wales. You’ll likely recognize...

Saturday evening at last weekend’s Terror Con in Marlborough, Ma, was capped off by a highlight of the event: a panel with Robert Englund. No one can work a room quite like the loquacious horror icon, and he regaled the standing-room-only crowd with 45 minutes of tales from his storied career.
Although it was advertised as Englund interviewing the audience — which could have been an entertaining way to avoid any potential issues with the SAG-AFTRA strike — the crowd was perfectly happy to learn that it would be a standard question-and-answer session instead. Englund began by explaining that the strike prohibits promotion of his work and any discussions about upcoming projects before quipping, “And if anybody asks how long the Freddy makeup takes, I’ll castrate you.” The audience erupted in laughter and cheers.
“I am, to this day, the luckiest son of a bitch in Hollywood,” he said of stumbling...
