Sal Maimone
- Animation Department
Sal Maimone worked as a photographer for the United States Department of Defense from 1950 until 1978. At the height of his career, he was the highest ranking United States civil servant without an congressional appointment. His rank was created for him and retired with him. He was in charge of every Air Force audio visual lab in the world. Notably, his duties included photographing atomic bomb tests at great personal risk as well as many rockets launches from Cape Canaveral.
After many years of radiation exposure, he developed tears in his retinas which ultimately diminished his vision and caused him to retire. In retirement he took up his passion of landscape photography and with the help of his daughter, Laura L. Maimone, was able to continue to build a library of photographs that are still published today by various stock photography agencies.
He was an example of an unstoppable drive to express his art. Growing up in extreme poverty, his need to provide a secure and consistent income for his family was paramount. He adapted his artist goals in order to work for the United States Government thereby insuring a stable future for his family.
He is survived by his wife Ann and his three children, Sal Jr., Timothy and Laura.
