Kamala Harris
What are the best and worst movies about elections?
Kamala Harris
As the US prepares to vote for a new president, a look back at the difficulties Hollywood election films have faced

The US presidential election takes up an enormous amount of space in the news cycle; even a reset and abbreviated race, like the one between the late-breaking candidate Kamala Harris and the eternal rerun Donald Trump, starts to feel downright eternal in the final sprint. It’s an event that dominates the media for the better part of every fourth year in the calendar (and a not-inconsiderable part of the other three), not without good reason: these races have been enormously consequential, as are many of the down-ballot races squeezed out of as much attention. Yet this urgency is not something often well-captured in movies about US elections, which frequently fall somewhere between flop-sweaty dramatic earnestness or toothless comedic mildness.

Maybe contemporary films can’t compete with the breathlessness...

Ted Danson Turns Quinta Brunson’s Compliment About Shelley Long Into Stinging Insult
Image
In the manner of most celebrity podcasts, Ted Danson’s conversation with Quinta Brunson on this week’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name quickly devolved into a fawning, mutual lovefest. But despite Danson’s gushing praise for all things comedy and Abbott Elementary, he managed to twist Brunson’s love for Shelley Long into a backhanded slap of his old Cheers co-star.

Brunson explained that her family was made up of Cheers superfans. She remembered watching as a young kid, but really appreciating its craft during reruns when she was a teen. More than most TV comedies, Cheers “felt like a play. Everyone was very grounded,” she told Danson. “I remember thinking that Diane was so grounded. I almost felt like she wasn’t acting.”

That got a laugh from Danson. “I felt the same way being with her sometimes.”

Oof. The comment flew past Brunson but it jibes with...

Grammys R&b nominations predictions: Sza, Victoria Monét, Usher are back to add to their trophy collections
Image
With past winners including Beyoncé, Prince, and Michael Jackson, the R&b field at the Grammys has given us a great taste of some of the best music ever made. This year the field is quite competitive, so there will likely be a few surprising snubs coming due to how dense it is.

SEEGrammys rock nominations predictions: Legends The Beatles and Rolling Stones face off against younger faves

Muni Long’s “Made for Me (Live)” is the probable winner in Best R&b Performance. The track is arguably the biggest R&b hit of the year in terms of urban radio and streaming, similar to Muni’s previous Grammy winner, “Hrs and Hrs.” The original version of “Made for Me” was actually submitted last year, before it really became a hit, therefore making it ineligible this year, hence her submitting a live version. Still, all the goodwill for Long could...

Kelsey Grammer Teases 'A Few Ideas" for Cheers Co-Stars in Frasier Reboot
Image
Frasier reboot star Kelsey Grammer continues to express hope of a Cheers reunion with some of his former co-stars on the hit parent series. According to the long-time Frasier Crane actor, he has a "few ideas" in mind for potential features.

Speaking with Variety, Grammer reiterated his intention to include fellow Cheers actors in the Frasier revival series, specifically Shelley Long and Ted Danson, who portrayed Diane Chambers and Sam Malone on the classic '80s sitcom. However, any potential reunion on the reboot depends on their "willingness" to participate. Its just a matter of willingness to be on the show, Grammer said. And if theres a good story. Id still love to have Shelley come back and play Diane, for one more sense of closure for Frasier. Because now that hes back in Boston, there are things that will come up, and I think that she would be one of them.

Justin Long Says His ‘Dodgeball’ Casting Got ‘Pushback’ from Studio: ‘I Was Way Too Old to Play That Part’
Image
Justin Long waited 20 years to cop to the fact that he was too old to play a high schooler in “Dodgeball.”

Long co-starred in the 2004 sports comedy alongside Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. During a recent “Dinner’s On Me” podcast hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Long revealed that his part was “written for a 15-year-old.” He was almost a decade older at the time.

“It was because of ‘Ed’ that I got [‘Dodgeball’] because it was an episode from ‘Ed’ that the writer, Rosson, the writer/director saw, and he wrote this part for me,” Long said. “The character’s name was Justin and…Ben and Vince Vaughn were two of my favorites. I so admired them. They were idols of mine, you know, and so it was such a fantasy and I was really nervous for the table read because I thought ‘This part is mine to lose.

Ryan Gosling Still Wants to Play One of Marvels Most Fiery Characters
Image
It's no secret that Ryan Gosling wants to play the fiery anti-hero Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Two years have past since Josh Horowitz went to bat for Gosling about joining the MCU, but the actor still hasn't heard anything from the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige. Regardless, Gosling says he'd still portray Ghost Rider in a brand-new interview. However, Gosling has also made it clear that he is trying to avoid roles that take him to a "dark place."

I told Josh Id like to play Ghost Rider, actor Ryan Gosling says in a new interview posted on X this morning. Well, after the revelation, Emily Blunt sitting right next to Gosling called her co-star from The Fall Guy a turncoat. Please keep the context in mind, as Blunt and Ryan Gosling spoke, and laughed a lot, with the host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast...

What Siskel & Ebert Called the Worst Movie Ever Made
Image
You may have never heard of Frozen Assets, but the 1992 film did something few other movies in history can lay claim to: it made Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert regret (at least briefly) dedicating their lives to watching movies. That's a depressingly impressive feat for the At the Movies with Siskel & Ebert stars, two of the most respected and beloved movie critics of all time.

The two legends have certainly disagreed on some major titles, and their respective "favorite films" were often very different. The two were steadfast in their beliefs, with Ebert rarely convincing Siskel to change his mind about a particular film. But, they rarely agreed on a film as emphatically as they did with Frozen Assets. Both critics hated the movie so much that there is a visceral discomfort in the way they described it in an old episode of their television show.

The so-called "comedy" was directed by George Trumbull Miller,...

‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ Review: Doc Reintroduces a Glittering Pop Star, but Never Digs Beneath the Surface
Image
The story of Lil Nas X’s rise from internet shitposter to one of our most innovative pop stars testifies to the musician’s tenacity, strategy and unwavering faith in himself. The Georgia native was only 20 years old when “Old Town Road,” his infectious country-trap song, went viral in 2019. Videos of children, teens and adults belting “I’m gonna take my house to the old town road” mushroomed across the internet. More than writing a hit, Lil Nas X encapsulated a new kind of road to stardom.

It’s a shame, then, that Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel’s plodding documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero doesn’t probe its subject more. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an anthemic document organized around Lil Nas X’s tour of the same name and split into three loose acts. It articulates, quite well, the...

Image
Cheers and Frasier may have shared some actors and characters, but their brand of humor and topic tackled were different, yet equally effective. The solid writing and brilliant cast were key qualities that made both Cheers and Frasier successful sitcoms. Actors like Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Shelley Long, and Bebe Neuwirth received Emmy nominations and wins for their performances in both Cheers and Frasier, showcasing their talent and versatility.

Cheers and Frasier shared the same actors and characters, and some of them were nominated for Emmys on both shows. Frasier became Cheers' most successful offshoot, running for 11 seasons. The Patient (FX) The Patient

Most episodes of FX’s The Patient stick with the perspective of Steve Carell’s Alan Strauss, a therapist held captive by a serial killer portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson. But in the seventh episode, “Kaddish,” the camera zooms out. As Alan says the Jewish prayer of mourning for both his dead wife and himself, director Gwyneth Horder-Payton photographs Carell through a rain-stained window in the basement room where he’s imprisoned.

“It just felt like the time to pull back the cameras and observe this human being in his own misery,” says executive producer Chris Long.

Backlit by light pouring in through glass bricks, Carell stands solemnly holding a piece of paper his captor printed out for him with the words of the kaddish. It’s an emotionally fraught moment, but Long and creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields thought it best to leave the character in his loneliness.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. is currently making music magic as the talented violinist Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges in the film "Chevalier." Why Social Media Impostors Pose a Constant Battle for Stars
Image
Type in any celebrity’s name on Instagram or Twitter and you’re bound to find at least a handful of accounts — if not more — posing as the celebrity, using the same profile picture and sharing photos and videos taken from their real accounts.

Some of them are innocuous fan accounts dedicated to sharing the latest updates on their favorite stars with other stans. But others — the true impostors — can cause much more harm, DMing unsuspecting fans to scam users out of money, solicit nude photos or otherwise exploit a celebrity’s star status.

Though social media platforms now have sophisticated AI-powered technology that can help weed out possible fraudsters among their millions of users, public figures still must contend with the potential for their likeness to be ripped off for someone else’s gain. In fact, Twitter’s verification program launched in 2009 after St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa...

Tusk 2: Why Kevin Smith's Divisive Box Office Bomb Needs A Sequel
Image
Kevin Smith's Tusk might have been a divisive box office bomb when it came out, but the horror comedy still needs a sequel. Written and directed by Smith using a story from his SModcast podcast, it follows an intrepid podcaster Wallace (Justin Long) who finds the perfect interview subject, an eccentric old man with an extraordinary past, Howard (Michael Parks), living in the Canadian wilderness, and makes the trek alone to record his stories. After an evening of listening to him recount an incredible tale about a walrus, the American suddenly finds himself taken captive and turned into the subject of an experiment in the bowel of his host's manor.

The movie's notoriety comes from the completely out-of-left-field moment when Wallace realizes that he's being transformed into Frankenstein's walrus, trapped in a flesh prison of other corpses, as the existential dread sinks in knowing no one knows where he is.

Blink-182 Took Us Back To High School During Throwback Performance at Coachella
Image
Blink-182 performed at Coachella with Tom DeLonge for the first time in nine years, kicking up the nostalgia as they blasted through an electric, testosterone-fueled set for a massive crowd that packed in the stage area.

The band opened with “Family Reunion” and carried through non-stop, angsty bangers, from “All the Small Things” to “I Miss You” to “Feeling This” to “What’s My Age Again?” They also played “Dysentery Gary,” with Long joking that he’d given himself a “C+” for his performance. In between, they cracked constant sophomoric jokes — but got innovated,...

The Raw, Unfiltered Magic of this New Seventies Neil Young Bootleg
Image
Neil Young always knew Tonight’s the Night was intense. “If you’re gonna put a record on at 11:00 in the morning, don’t put on Tonight’s the Night,” he warned Cameron Crowe in 1975. “Put on the Doobie Brothers.”

Young’s point was evident without even hearing the music. Just look at the stark, spooky cover, which features him standing onstage in complete darkness, wearing a pinstripe jacket and raising his finger to the microphone, his mouth forming a ghoulish smile. His shoulder-length hair looks like it’s gone many days without a wash,...

Film Analysis: Furies (2022) by Veronica Ngo
Image
“From the moment I was born I was destined for darkness” states Bi in the opening voiceover to “Furies”. The Furies were the ancient Greek goddesses of vengeance and so makes for an apt title for this feature that is a loose prequel to the 2019 film “Furie”. This time, star Veronica Ngo takes the directors chair and co stars in a bleak tale of revenge that goes in a different direction to it's predecessor. There has been a trend for villain origin stories but it's rare to see one in East Asian cinema, especially given the character it chooses to focus on. Given how Thang Soi made her living in the original, gaining empathy for such a character could prove a challenge.

After being raped by one of her mother's clients, a young Bi witnesses him attack and kill her. After stabbing him to death, she flees to the city...

Image
Justin Long and Kate Bosworth are engaged and sharing private details about their love story.

During a new episode of his Life Is Short podcast that was released Tuesday, Long was joined by Bosworth, where the pair confirmed that they got engaged earlier this year after the Barbarian star popped the question. “We are embarking on a new chapter,” Bosworth, 40, said on the episode. Long, 44, then said, “People have been asking because Catherine wore a ring that I gave to her when I asked her — well, not when I asked her, but shortly after I asked her — to marry me.”

Long explained that prior to his actual proposal, he had a somewhat more elaborate plan for the special moment that...

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long Reveal the "Romantic and Honest" Way He Proposed
Image
Kate Bosworth and Justin Long have confirmed their engagement - and revealed the sweet and personal way he proposed. After 40-year-old "Blue Crush" star Bosworth debuted a 10-carat ring at the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12, People reported on March 24 that multiple sources said the couple are set to tie the knot. Now, in the April 4 edition of his podcast, "Life Is Short with Justin Long," the couple wanted to share the news, themselves, through a "loving conversation."

Long said he had a proposal planned around Bosworth's birthday in January but said a month before that "things changed." Instead, "It was a moment where it just felt so organic and it felt connected to something very, very deeply, profoundly personal that we were going through, like, a real life change, and so it came out in a very organic way," he said of popping the question. "The asking of it was easy,...

‘Furies’ (2023) Ending, Explained: Do The Girls Defeat ‘Mad Dog’? What Happens To Jacqueline?
Image
Veronica Ngô presents “Furies,” a prequel to the 2019 Vietnamese-language film “Furie.” Although a prequel, the film follows an entirely different pattern and moves to Ho Chi Minh City in the 90s. Violent and savage, the film is just over two hours long and packed with fight sequences that will leave your jaw on the floor and sometimes have you leave your brain behind too. It also releases at a great time to accompany “John Wick 4” for a weekend full of fury and bloodshed.

Spoilers Ahead

Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Furies’?

The film opens with a dark scene of violence, with dozens of men dead on the floor and a young woman being shot. This is the story of that young woman, Bi. As a child, Bi was brought up by a single mother who engaged in prostitution to make money to support them. Unfortunately, when Bi was a teenager,...

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans React Over Major Daily Double Bet
Image
Jeopardy!’s ongoing winner Stephen Webb went against policy director Jessica Ashooh and Long Nguyen, a retired engineer, during the March 14 episode of the trivia show. But could he increase his total winnings of $139,281 in his sixth game tonight? The three went into Double Jeopardy, with Stephen leading with $9,600, Long following up with $5,800, and Jessica alongside $3,400. Jessica immediately gets a Daily Double when the round begins in the category Literary London: “This 1881 Mark Twain novel takes place in London’s poorer areas as well as in some of its ritzier locales.” She, unfortunately, got it wrong and lost all of her earnings, betting it all. Loing gets the second Daily Double during Double Jeopardy in the category Scrambled U.S. History: “1820s announcement: No credo on merit,” then betting it all when he proclaims he’s from Vegas. Unfortunately, his answer was wrong; it was, in fact, the Monroe Doctrine.
