London, Oct 21 (Ians) Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on Friday confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute in the game against Tottenham on Wednesday, saying that there “has to be consequences” for the star footballer.
The 37-year-old exited Old Trafford before full-time after leaving the bench and walking down the tunnel in the 89th minute of United’s 2-0 win.
He has been dropped for Saturday’s game at Chelsea and is training alone.
Asked directly whether Ronaldo refused to come on, Ten Hag said: “Yes.”
The manager added that the Portugal international did the same at half-time of the friendly against Rayo Vallecano in pre-season and he felt he had to act.
“The talk is between Cristiano and me. The statement is clear. It is also in the statement that he remains an important part of the squad,” Ten Hag was quoted as saying by BBC.

New Zealand rugby icon Jonah Lomu and former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel will be the subjects of two new documentaries from U.K.-based sales agent and distributor Dogwoof and Sylver Entertainment.
The companies previously collaborated on “McEnroe,” a documentary about the tennis great John McEnroe, which was released in U.K. cinemas in July and premiered on Showtime on Sept. 2.
As development financiers and executive producers on both projects, Dogwoof will be presenting the projects to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.
“Lomu” is centred on the late Jonah Lomu, one of the greatest rugby players of all time. Lomu was a Tongan/Kiwi warrior who could run 100 metres in under 11 seconds. He was the youngest All Black to put on the jersey and still holds the record for the most tries scored in World Cup history. The film about his life is being made...

Amazon has announced that more than 40 presenters and former professionals will be part of its English Premier League lineup, with its coverage of the soccer competition kicking-off in December.
Amazon secured rights to show the Premier League in the UK last year, and will air 20 matches a season. Coverage will launch on December 3 with mid-week fixtures, before it shows 10 matches on December 26-27.
BBC presenter Gabby Logan will anchor the Sunset+Vine-produced action, alongside Eilidh Barbour — a BBC and Sky broadcaster — and Jim Rosenthal, a veteran who has covered the world’s biggest sporting events for major UK broadcasters.
Logan is already hosting weekly Amazon soccer show Back of the Net, but her presence on live coverage is still a coup for the Jeff Bezos-owned streamer. Logan is one of the BBC’s highest-profile presenters, taking home a salary of more than £290,000 and hosting shows including Sports Personality of the Year.

Since the Premier League began back in 1992, we’ve been treated to some extraordinary talent. Whether it be gifted goal-scorers like Thierry Henry, cat-like shot-stoppers like Peter Schmeichel or midfield maestros like Steven Gerrard, England has been truly blessed with some of the world’s best.
Football is no fairytale land, however. Not all remarkably talented individuals go on to do great things, and not all go on to have a well-sustained career. For every player that made it to the top, there are dozens that never quite made the grade in England’s top flight. It only takes one tackle, one turn or one traumatic experience to bring an abrupt end to any player’s footballing journey – regardless of their reputation, potential and talent.
Who really remembers the ‘could-have-beens’ though? Sporting history tends not to care for those that could have achieved amazing things, but fell...

Supporting Newcastle United is similar to riding a roller coaster; high peaks followed by unsuspected plunges and a bit of nausea thrown in for good measure.
The Magpies have always been a very well supported club. The faithful Toon Army have stuck by the team through the good and the bad, without letting the empty trophy case curb their enthusiasm. There’s no denying the fans of the club have an abundance of passion, but what do they get in return? Nothing but heartache and close calls.
It’s not all bad being a Geordie though: who can forget the 5-0 drumming we gave Manchester United in the nineties with Philippe Albert’s majestic lob over Peter Schmeichel? Or more recently the Premier League’s greatest ever comeback in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal with Cheick Tiote’s thunderous volley to equalize in the final minutes of the game?...

The famed raconteur and known intellect had kept some of his juiciest morsels away from the first book – which famously got him in trouble for admitting he purposely tried to injure Alfie-Inge Haland, and basically ended his Man Utd career along with a silly elbow on Jason McAteer – in order to spin a bit more money with a follow up.

Without doubt one of the coolest pieces of exclusive content are the Legends on FIFA Ultimate Team, available only to Xbox and Xbox One gamers. These historical powerhouses of the beautiful game make many of today’s players look distinctively unimpressive; indeed, Pelé’s 95 rating means that he is even better than Lionel Messi (now rated 93 on FIFA 15). The inclusion of 15 new Legends means that the roster is better than ever before, now boasting the likes of Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbauer and Peter Schmeichel.
The jealousy coming from FIFA-addicted Playstation owners who wished they could add Pelé to their Ultimate Team is understandably rife. However, the Xbox-exclusive content isn’t without its faults. Even with the new additions to the roster, there are still several notable absentees who have inexplicably been overlooked once again.
Of course it would be an impossible task to include all of the sport’s historical greats.

Any side with ambitions of winning the Premier League title needs to have a solid spine, a dependable goalkeeper first of all, the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Petr Cech or Edwin Van Der Sar. Two reliable defenders willing to put their body on the line for the team, the likes of John Terry, Jamie Carragher, Nemanja Vidic, Sol Campbell or Vincent Kompany. A striker that can put the ball in the back of the net is surely a must too, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo, possibly.
But for any great team, perhaps most crucial of all is to have solid central midfield base. One which can fill in and support the defence when needed, but also provide the ammunition for the likes of Henry and Shearer to finish, with an impeccably weighted through-ball or pin-point set piece delivery – they might...

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has made a marked improvement since arriving at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
After a difficult spell in England which saw his body strength and abilities to cope with the rigours of English football called into question, the Spaniard has put his troubles behind him.
De Gea’s performances have been one of only a few positives from what has largely been a troublesome debut season for David Moyes, who has struggled to step into Sir Alex Ferguson’s shoes.
United have already lost eight times this season, the most games they have ever lost since the inception of the Premier League, and are floundering in seventh.
But while the Red Devils have been struggling, midfielder Darren Fletcher recently singled de Gea out for praise, saying:
He has been fantastic for us. There has not been a better goalkeeper around for the last 18 months.

Scholes the joker, Schmeichel scalding his privates, Beckham just one of the lads … Tom Horan on a film that casts a new light on 90s Manchester and its football heroes
How many documentaries can claim to capture the spirit of an era through the reflections of an ex-prime minister – and the story of a Danish goalkeeper scalding his penis on a giant tea urn? Not many. But it is unquestionably true of The Class of 92, the British film that premiered this week in London.
The Class of 92 is remarkable not just for being an excellent film about football, a subject that rarely translates to the big screen, but for being about so much more. Using interviews and archive footage, it follows six Manchester United players who met in their early teens and together won every honour in club football. But what emerges through the reminiscences of David Beckham,...

So, here’s a novel idea…
Imagine, if you will, that we could pluck ten players from the entirety of the English Premier League’s history – 5 English, 5 not English – and put them up against each other in the ultimate Premier League 5-a-Side match, all in their prime:
The Best Ever English Premier League 5-a-Side Team
Vs
The Best Ever Rest of the World Premier League 5-a-Side Team
Please note, this involves picking such a small number of players from such a large selection that the idea is to create discussion. I in no way expect people to 100% agree with my selections, because choosing a ‘correct’ selection of players for this topic is nigh on impossible and merely a matter of opinion.
Let’s first take a look at England’s team…
Goalkeeper: David Seaman
No English goalkeeper has performed as well for club and country in the Premiership years as David Seaman.

After last night’s disappointment, some United fans may well now be looking at the summer as an opportunity to restrenghten and make another assault on the Champion League next term, meaning that the coming transfer window will be an extremely important one for Sir Alex Ferguson.
The summer transfer window raises the same questions over and over again in recent summers: will the elder statesmen of the Red Devils’ squad stay or go? Ryan Giggs has recently committed his future to the club, but doubts remain over Scholes and Rio Ferdinand, and Sir Alex may choose to rebuild his squad in their positions.
And if they all do stay, can they carry on at the pace, and defy the usual laws of the game to continue to compete with athletes – some of who are half their age? And besides the elder squad members, what players could strengthen this United...

This season the Premier League is awash with many players filling squads and with the FIFA eligibility rules now confining a squad to only twenty five players, some are being lost into obscurity. Goalkeepers are still a well sought after commodity, if you have one in which you can back whole heartedly (think the Manchester United greats like Alex Stepney, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar) he will be one of the most important players you will ever see on the pitch. There is definitely a down side to being a goalkeeper though, the weight of pressure and media scrutiny will confine your career for one mistake in a match can end your run with the number one shirt; Scott Carson’s misjudged the bounce of a Niko Kranjcar 30 yard drive and was left only able to parry the ball into his own net culminating in England’s 3-...

Further eyebrows were raised over the long term future of Man Utd keeper David de Gea yesterday as the Spaniard was again at fault – this time for failing to clear the ball in the build-up to the opening goal by James Perch during his sides incredible last gasp win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford, a game that saw the home side leak goals yet again.
In fact, those eyebrows have still yet to be lowered – many still feel he is “another Massimo Taibi” or similar to any of the other flops United have brought in down the years to try and replace legend Peter Schmeichel.
A harsh assessment perhaps, but the stats don’t lie. de Gea has started just 11 out of 19 Premier League games this season, with Sir Alex Ferguson opting for understudy Anders Lindegaard at times given the Spaniard’s recent patchy form.

A 9ft bronze statue of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been unveiled outside Old Trafford, to celebrate his 26 years at the club.
The honour is the second of its kind bestowed upon the club’s most successful manager, a year after the North Stand of the stadium was renamed “The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand”.
Former United players who have contributed to Ferguson’s phenomenal haul of silverware down the years were present, with Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel and Gary and Phill Neville all in attendance, whilst David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and FIFA President Sepp Blatter sent pre-recorded messages.
Beckham, part of the famous 1999 Treble Winning United side, said:
“What an amazing day for you, your family and for the club.
“I just want to say thank you for everything you have done for me.

Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is returning to Old Trafford, according to The Sun.
It is expected that he will return as an ambassador for the club where he won five Premier League Titles, three F.A Cups, the League Cup and the Champions League.
“The Great Dane”, as he is affectionately known by supporters, etched his name into eternal Old Trafford folklore in 1999 when he helped Manchester United to a treble – the Premier League, F.A Cup and Champions League. United remain today the only English team to achieve this feat.
He made 393 appearances after joining from Bronby in 1991 and was regarded by many as the worlds best goalkeeper.
After leaving the club in 1999, he played for Portugese side Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa and even rivals Manchester City. He has an exceptional record in the Manchester derby in that he never played on the losing side. During his time at Old Trafford,...

Unless you have been living under the sea, or more likely, unless you haven’t an interest in football, you couldn’t have failed to notice the celebrations of ’20 seasons in the Premier League’, a festival of voting for goals, managers, teams, celebrations, socks, grass, weather…
Manchester United have, without question, been the greatest team in Premier League history. Twelve titles (perhaps thirteen if you have stumbled across this from the future) amongst others go some way to proving that.
So in homage to the greatest ever Premier League Team, I have sought to try and pick their best ever Premier League XI, a debate that will rage on and on and on, to the point someone ends up in tears.
If you think I’ve got it wrong, prove it.
Gk: Peter Schmeichel
If there has been a better keeper in Premier League history, I’ll tell you that you are totally incorrect.

2011/12 already looks like yet another year of competing at the top of the league for the red half of Manchester, despite a series of injuries recently, but Sir Alex Ferguson will not be happy with his team currently sitting in second place behind so-called “noisy neighbours” City and will do everything in his power to ensure that the Champions pip the Champions Elect to the league title.
Whether that context will see the Scottish elder-statesman enter the market much during this winter window remains to be seen, as Sir Alex tends to resist any temptations to destabilise his squad mid-season and conducts his business between seasons in a far more civilised manner. That way he gets far more value for his money – or at least that is the theory.
Not all of Sir Alex’s recent forrays into the market have been quite as successful as those of past seasons:...

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Peter Shilton was the second person to take to the big BBC dancefloor tonight.
The former football star took on the salsa with his partner Erin Boag and after we got over the extreme brightness of her hideous outfit, we realised that it was going to be a poor routine. Peter dances worse than my dad, after ten pints of beer, at a family wedding. I think that he even managed to make Erin look bad tonight!
Judges Comments:
Len: The salsa is all about fun, rhythm and hip action and we saw some fun and chemistry. But there was a lot of it when you were standing around for too long. It was a bar ave attempt but not your best. (5)
Alesha: I don’t think Latin is your strongpoint but you seem more confident this week. (5)
Bruno: I don;t klnow if...
