Exclusive: CAA has laid off a number of staff in its global TV division and is centralizing the team to the U.S. and UK.
We understand that staffers based in countries such as Mexico, Africa, Germany and the UK have been made redundant; less than 10 people have been affected.
One of CAA’s most prominent global TV agents, Stockholm-based Pete Stone, is relocating to London. Stone moved to Stockholm nearly four years ago when ICM Partners – prior to its CAA acquisition – took a minority stake in Swedish agency Albatros. In London, CAA rival UTA acquired storied British agency Curtis Brown in 2022.
Details of CAA’s move to centralize global TV to the U.S. and London are still being ironed out and there could be more strategic shifts to come, we understand. A spokesman for CAA, which employees about 3,400 people, declined comment.

Now that everyone's finally stopped gushing about season 1, the sophomore season of "Squid Game" is (hopefully) almost here. The horror-tinged dystopian thriller about a group of participants tricked into playing deadly versions of childhood games debuted back in 2021 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Originally planned as a limited series, the wild success of "Squid Game" led to its season 2 renewal, and it took some time to pull together a continuation of the story.
Will lightning strike twice for "Squid Game," or is it a premise that's about played out? We won't know until we see more of season 2, but everything we do know indicates that the show will be even more ambitious in its second outing. Season 1 exposed the corruption and greed behind the killer gameplay, but season 2 seems poised to dig deeper into the systems that enable the games as winner Gi-hun continues to be impacted by the...

In 2021 and 2022, the first season of "Squid Game" on Netflix was a pop culture phenomenon. It became Netflix's most popular series of all time, racking up 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the first four weeks alone. It was inescapable. Everyone was talking about "Squid Game," and for good reason: it's a pretty fantastic series about the horrors of surviving in late capitalism. It's thrilling, pretty unique, and it's ultimately relatable for anyone who has ever lived paycheck to paycheck, and now it's coming back for a second season.
The hit South Korean series was created by director Hwang Dong-hyuk and followed 456 contestants in a brutal pseudo-game show performed secretly for the filthy rich, each trying to survive until the end and win the massive grand prize. Getting eliminated didn't just mean going home — it meant going to the grave. Despite being a distinctly South Korean story, the struggles the characters face feel universal.

Squid Game released a successful reality spinoff titled Squid Game: The Challenge. The series’ creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, was very much aware of the reality show’s development. But how much did he support the series?

Squid Game showrunner Hwang was very sympathetic toward critics of the reality show The Challenge. Fans felt one of the reasons for Squid Game’s success was its commentary on subjects such as classism and wealth disparity. The concern was that a lot of these themes would’ve been lost on The Challenge just based on its nature as reality television. But Hwang felt taking the entertainment aspect of Squid Game too seriously might’ve been a mistake.

We shouldn’t be allowed to call “Squid Game” dystopian now that Netflix has built the torment nexus, but the sheer scale of the streamer’s new reality series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” is impressive. Big reality elimination challenge shows like “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “The Amazing Race” feature contestants in the double, not triple, digits. While “Squid Game: The Challenge” settles on squibs instead of actual bullets, the logistical hurdles involved in blowing up narrative sequences and making them practical as games — for hundreds of players — are legion.
Filmed over 16 days at a series of six interconnected studios in London, “Squid Game: The Challenge” features representations of the unnervingly cheerful “Squid Game” work of production designer Chae Kyoung-sun and the iconic costumes created by designer Jo Sang-gyeong, as well as inclusion of composer Jung Jae-il’s score and a penchant for recreating the deliciously painful slo-mo editing of games perfected by editor Nam Na-young.

The “death game” sub-genre sees ordinary people fight for survival through murderous games, puzzles, and exercises. These heightened stories have become so popular because of their tendency to turn torture and suffering into a twisted form of entertainment — a concept that feels increasingly authentic with each passing year. There are dozens of anime that fit the murderous death game mold between Deadman Wonderland, Danganronpa, and Gantz. However, there are also a handful of series that specifically follow Takashi Miike’s As the Gods Will and Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game’s example, where childish recreational games and activities become the competitive tools of these characters’ destruction. Kaiji, Liar Game, Death Parade, Alice in Borderland, and Btooom! all follow this model to some extent. As the Gods Will predates Squid Game by six years, but there’s fascinating crossover between these two death game stories. As the Gods Will is the...

The hottest show of the fall is gearing up for its exciting finale, but will Player 016 (Sam), Player 287 (Mai) or Player 451 (Phill) be named the ultimate winner of “Squid Game: The Challenge”? The Netflix reality TV show concludes on Wednesday, December 6, with one person about to become $4.56 million richer. Gold Derby asked the show’s fans to tell us who they are rooting for to prevail, and we can now reveal the poll results:
49% — Player 287 (Mai)
32% — Player 451 (Phill)
19% — Player 016 (Sam)
See‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ spoilers: Winners, losers and fan-favorites
By far, Mai has been featured more on the show than the other two finalists, thanks in part to her initial mistrust (and later apology) to Player 182 (Tj). And of course, who could forget Mai going after Player 278 (Ashley) in the “Die Test” because she saw her as disloyal for the way she acted toward Player 301 (Trey) in the “Glass Bridge” challenge?...

“Squid Game: The Challenge” has to literalize, at human scale, the games the original Hwang Dong-hyuk series takes an (understandably) limited, narrative perspective through. It’s both a production design and game design problem to solve: How much space do 456 people need to play a game of red light/green light? How can you build a glass bridge that’s safe enough to jump on but high enough to hurl into an abyss the players who fail?
Even the smallest details — like creating a Dalgona cookie recipe that was of a uniform thickness and consistency — took almost 20 tries to get right. But the way that “Squid Game: The Challenge” realizes its games is also illustrative of how all reality game shows organize their challenges and the qualities that make them so appealing to watch.
Some of the “Squid Game” challenges weren’t possible to pull off in real life or needed to be structurally rethought.

Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge brings together 456 contestants to play through a real-life version of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s grim satire in which cash-strapped contestants compete in demeaning, often deadly games for money. The reality show’s participants live together in a sterile-looking dormitory outfitted with towering quadruple-decker bunk beds and file through a brightly colored maze of stairways each day to face similar, albeit nonfatal, challenges. Round by round, their numbers are whittled down until one person remains to claim the largest cash prize in reality television history: $4.56 million.
The Challenge’s contestants are drawn from around the world and a wide range of backgrounds, from former athletes and Mensa members to sports scientists, self-proclaimed nihilists, and a couple of retirees looking to prove that they’ve still got it. From this pool of characters, the producers of the show do a relatively decent job of crafting...

If there were such a thing as a “Misinterpreting the Message of Your Own TV Show Contest”, Netflix would be winning it in a walk when it comes to Squid Game. The Korean series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk is both a survival drama and scathing critique of a late capitalistic hellscape in which engaging in a 456-player battle to the death for ₩45.6 billion is preferable to trying to make it in the dismal real world.
Since the massively successful series first premiered on Netflix in late 2021, the streamer has responded to its anti-capitalistic themes by: underpaying its creator, having Netflix’s millionaire CEO dress up as one of the desperately poor contestants during an earnings call, and most glaringly: commissioning a reality competition based on the show’s deadly games. Of all the ways in which Netflix has terminally missed the mark on its own creation, it’s undoubtedly that...
