The Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences announced this week the nominations for the 52nd Annual Juno Awards. Among the nominees to be awarded in March were Arcade Fire in the Group of the Year category. The nomination follows accusations of sexual misconduct against Win Butler, who co-founded the band with his wife Régine Chassagne.
Last year, multiple women came forward with misconduct allegations against Butler; three of whom were “devoted” Arcade Fire fans between the ages of 18 to 23 at the time of meeting the band frontman.

However, the Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences (Caras) — the group behind the annual Junos — is defending Arcade Fire’s nomination.

A fifth woman has made misconduct allegations against Win Butler, the frontman of indie rock group Arcade Fire.
Earlier this year, four other women came forward with claims of sexual misconduct against Butler, 42, citing incidents that allegedly took place between 2016 and 2020.
In a statement at the time, Butler denied all claims of misconduct, stating that he was “very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behaviour” but that “these relationships were all consensual”.
“I f***ed up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences,” he said.
Now, a fifth woman, indentified by the pseudonym Sabina, has told Pitchfork magazine that she had a “toxic” relationship with Butler that lasted three years.
Butler has been married to the musician and Arcade Fire bandmate Régine Chassagne since 2003.

Back in August, four people came forward to accuse Win Butler of sexual misconduct, and now a fifth is sharing a new allegation against the Arcade Fire frontman.
In a report in Pitchfork, the anonymous woman shared text message between herself and Butler over the course of their three-year sexual relationship, which she is now characterizing as manipulative and abusive.
According to the woman — who is identified by the pseudonym Sabina — she met Butler when she was working as a waitress in Montreal back in 2015, when she was 22 and he was 35.

A fifth person has come forward with misconduct allegations against Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, saying he was “emotionally abusive, manipulative, and toxic” during their three-year relationship, Pitchfork reports.
The new allegations, brought by a woman using the pseudonym Sabina, come several months after four people accused Butler of sexual misconduct between 2016 and 2020. Three of his accusers said Butler used his fame to pressure them into sexual encounters; a fourth said Butler sexually assaulted them on two occasions, including once sticking his hand into their pants without consent.

It's an interesting time to be a fan of "Saturday Night Live." Since the season 47 finale in May, we've seen the cast departures of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Melissa Villaseñor, Chris Redd, and Aristotle Athari. We've also seen four new cast members join the cast: Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker. It might sound like a lot of changes, but don't worry: at least we know Kenan Thompson's sticking around.
The last time there was a cast shake-up on this level was in 2013, when Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen all left at the same time, and six new cast members were added for the new season. If you're thinking that's an unusually high number of cast members to add at once, you're correct. The show itself was aware of this, which might be why the host Tina Fey...

A devastating couplet is every pop star’s secret weapon. Whether it’s Morrissey grumbling about having to go to bed with nothing but a Sylvia Plath anthology for warmth or Kate Bush crooning sweet nothings-that-are-actually-dark-somethings lyrics illuminate and elevate a song. Words bring clarity and drama, opening a secret passage to an artist’s internal life.
Or that is at least the case when they transcend mere bubble-gum and strain for grandeur. The power of a musician’s words has been acknowledged of late in surprising places. Bob Dylan, who once wrote “Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a gypsy queen/Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle all dressed in green”, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016, while rapper Kendrick Lamar won a 2018 Pulitzer prize for his supremely literate Damn album.

Arcade Fire’s music will not play on some Canadian radio stations after frontman Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct by four people.
On Tuesday (30 August), it was reported that at least three stations have decided not to play the indie rock band’s music amid allegations of “inappropriate” actions by Butler, 42, between 2015 and 2020.
A representative for CBC said the broadcaster will “pause” playing the Montreal-based Arcade Fire’s music on CBC Music FM radio station and the Sirius Xm channel CBC Radio “until we learn more about the situation”, as per Ottawa City News.
Meanwhile, Toronto’s Indie88 made “a quick decision over the weekend to pull the band’s music”, program director Ian March told the publication.
He added that the station has “not yet had a fulsome internal conversation about the permanence of this decision”, in his statement to the outlet.

Arcade Fire’s Win Butler denies sexual misconduct as four accuse singer of ‘inappropriate’ behaviour
Arcade Fire’s Win Butler has denied allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.
Four accusers have spoken out against the musician, accusing him of “inappropriate” actions between 2015 and 2020.
All fans of the band, they allege that they had sexual interactions with Butler when they were aged between 18 and 23. Butler at the time was between 36 and 39.
One accuser, who spoke to Pitchfork under the pseudonym Lily and uses they/them pronouns, says that they met the musician at a concert in 2015.
After the gig, Butler allegedly touched them non-consensually in a car and gave them a kiss that they “did not ask for”.
Butler was married at the time to bandmate Régine Chassagne. The pair are still married.
They also claim that Butler “pinned me up against the wall and was aggressively grabbing my body and sticking his tongue down my throat”.

Four people have accused Arcade Fire’s frontman, Win Butler, of sexual misconduct.
Three women came forward telling Pitchfork that they felt as though the incidents with Butler were “inappropriate given the gaps in age, power dynamics, and context in which they occurred.” The fourth person, who is gender-fluid, claimed that they were sexually assaulted twice by the lead singer.
The victims were all devoted fans of the Canadian indie rock band when the encounters occurred between 2015 to 2020. They ranged from ages 18 to 23 when each of their interactions began with Butler, whom was between 36 and 39 at the time.

When Arcade Fire first came roaring out of Montreal with their firmament-strafing debut, Funeral, in 2004, they promised something new, exciting, and somewhat contradictory: heroic, culturally significant indie rock. A significance-deprived world ate it right up. This band didn’t just musically honor Springsteen, U2, and Bowie in the coming years, they became those artists’ peers and collaborators. Sometimes they’ve lived up to the high expectations they set for themselves, and sometimes they haven’t. Album’s like 2007’s Neon Bible and 2010’s The Suburbs were potent expressions of underdog rock gusto.

Arcade Fire turn the classic Disney tune “Baby Mine” into a swooning indie-rock gem for Tim Burton’s upcoming live-action remake of Dumbo, out March 29th.
Peppering the tender lullaby with an array of orchestral flourishes, Arcade Fire find a new kind of tenderness in a song that’s been recorded by everyone from Betty Noyes (who did the 1941 original) to Brian Wilson, Bette Middler and Rosemary Clooney. Adding an extra layer of poignancy, Arcade Fire’s Win Butler explained in a statement how recording the song became a family affair.

Big stars – and lots of those not-so-famous actors hoping to ride the Sundance Film Festival train to that same spot in the Hollywood firmament – descended on Park City for Sundance 2019 as the fest’s first weekend unfolded from January 24 to 27. Happily, the weather cooperated (cold but clear) and there were parties, premieres, brunches, dinners and dances all day and all night. The most popular game became a contest: how many gatherings could you hit in one day? And how many outfit changes could you pull off? Awkwafina and Naomi Watts played that one like bosses.
Sundance 2019 is all about diversity and inclusiveness, as women are making bold moves on both sides of the camera and the stories being told encompass the rainbow of human experiences. And there was even a bona fide second line, straight from the heart of New Orleans onto snowy Main Street. It’s been a time to celebrate change,...

Arcade Fire: The Reflektor Tapes (Kahlil Joseph)
A list of things The Reflektor Tapes comes close to being but doesn’t quite end up as: a concert film stitching together Arcade Fire‘s work on a worldwide tour supporting their most recent album, Reflektor; a travelogue of said tour; a sense-memory visual essay tracing the years-long life of songs, tracing from hashing-out and recording to a presentation for thousands of screaming, jumping fans; a channel-futzing sonic exploration...

With a few exceptions (i.e. Scott Baio, Antonio Sabato Jr. and Willie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty”), entertainers are nearly unanimous in their opposition to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. We can count Win Butler among the anti-Trump camp, with the Arcade Fire front man offering a terse assessment of the Republican nominee during a Montreal Q&A session for Red […]...

Clear the court: It's time for the NBA Celebrity All-Star Game. And this year, it's a North American battle for the baskets. A pair of star-stacked teams - one representing the United States and one Canada - are set to take the court at this year's NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. To coach the Canadian team, the NBA has wrangled everyone's favorite basketball-loving Canadian rapper, Drake. Leading the Americans will be NBA All-Star Celebrity vet Kevin Hart. Well, it's not going to be easy to listen to another Arcade Fire album again. "You have to combine with a new force to make a new kind of wave," says the band's frontman, Win Butler, over a smorgasbord of superimposed images and concert footage. He says this at the beginning of his band's new rockumentary, and it ends up being one of the more comprehensible things in "The Reflektor Tapes." By 'new force,' he's referring to the musical traditions in Haiti, where the band spent a lot of time spiritually connecting with the locals looking for a new musical approach for their 2013 album Reflektor. After shooting some footage there, the band turned to the forceful Kahlil Joseph, the avant-garde music video director for the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Fka Twigs, for a collaboration on a new kind of concert film. The result? A painfully nonsensical piece of...

Kahlil Joseph’s documentary about the beloved stadium fillers may connect with their fans, though it tells us little about the music or the people who make it
Related: Arcade Fire's Will Butler: 'My goal in art is to be like Moby-Dick'
Music-video director Kahlil Joseph’s first feature explores Arcade Fire’s most recent album, Reflektor, and plays like an electronic press kit with jumped up ideas about itself. Comprised of concert footage, and more intimate scenes of the band writing and recording in Haiti, all shot on a range of stocks, it’s flabby and repetitive, but peppered with moments of exquisite sonic lusciousness – not unlike the album itself. Naturally, enjoyment will depend to high degree on how much viewers already like the American-Canadian-Haitian stadium fillers. But as a piece of cinema, it’s a doggedly indifferent work that tells us little about the music or the people who make it.

From Bananaman to Grange Hill, join us in a spot of TV nostalgia as we celebrate 50 great 1980s kids' TV theme songs...
There comes a time to turn away from the horrors of the world and retreat underneath the soft, comforting duvet of nostalgia. That time is Friday. That metaphorical duvet is below.
Here are fifty of the best kids’ TV theme songs (spread over two pages and in arbitrary order) of the 1980s. Some, like Alan Hawkshaw’s distinctive Grange Hill intro, are unarguable classics of the era, while others, like Mike Harding's Count Duckula, only started in the late-eighties and spent the rest of their run in the next decade.
Obviously, there being only 50 on this list, we may have missed out your favourite (deliberately or otherwise). Let us know if so, but remember that links may take a while to appear in the comments thread because...

Read More: On The Breathtakingly Beautiful Freedom In Kahlil Joseph's 'Until the Quiet Comes' Arcade Fire, the Canadian indie rock group fronted by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, is releasing a feature film called "The Reflektor Tapes" -- a title in direct reference to their latest album, "Reflektor." The film is directed by Kahlil Joseph, who is already a seasoned veteran of the cinematic music scene having previously worked on films with Fka Twigs, Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus, among others. A new first look trailer for the film has been released, featuring a chaotic montage of the band's trip to Haiti, Win Butler playing and destroying a drum onstage and plenty of wild outfits for which Arcade Fire has become known. Appearing to mirror the intense, complex emotion that often acts as a backdrop for Arcade Fire's innovative music, "The Reflektor Tapes" promises insight into...

Later this year, Arcade Fire will release their first feature film, The Reflektor Tapes, directed by Kahlil Joseph (Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus). It follows the band on their Reflektor tour, with a specific focus on their stop in Haiti. The first preview of the film, set to the song "Porno" from that album, brings us along with Win Butler and Régine Chassagne as they travel through the same Haitian streets her parents fled decades ago. As expected, the band's papier-mâché heads are front and center. The Reflektor Tapes hits theaters September 24.

Two years after they released Reflektor, Arcade Fire will release a feature film called The Reflektor Tapes into movie theaters on September 24th. Khalil Joseph, who won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance in 2013 for his trippy Flying Lotus video "Until the Quiet Comes," helmed the picture. The band has put out a trailer for the film and promised to post theater and ticketing information in the near future.

There are the artists who have a beef with Spotify. And now there are the artists who don't think that Jay Z's new, by-the-artist-for-the-artist streaming service Tidal is anything to write home about either. The members of Mumford & Sons were the latest to speak their minds about Tidal, which launched to much star-studded fanfare last month, with frontman Marcus Mumford telling The Daily Beast that they had not been invited into the fold along with Madonna, Rihanna, Arcade Fire's Win Butler and the other music luminaries who joined Jay Z for the rollout. But they wouldn't have joined the fun anyway, he says. "We wouldn't have joined it anyway, even if they had asked. We...

Ever wonder who would win a game of pick-up between 5'4" comedian Kevin Hart and 6'4" Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler? You'll soon have a chance to find out, because the two were listed among the star-studded lineup for the 2015 Spring NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, announced on Thursday. Two of the event's perennial top players, Hart and Nick Cannon, will return to the hardwood Feb. 13 for the annual showdown. Hart will be looking to improve upon his lackluster 7-point performance from last year's game - for which fans surprisingly voted him to his third straight Mvp award. Stars like Selma's Common,...

Before you head out to whatever spooky event you have planned tonight, Arcade Fire have a little treat to share. The band, having wrapped their massive world tour for Reflektor, aren't done sharing a few more goodies with fans. And a pretty nice one landed today. The Montreal-based band dropped "Festi," a 20-minute horror short. It's a gleefully bonkers, lo-fi production, starring the band, that centers around Win Butler's 27th birthday and bunch of scary, wacky stuff that happens. Perhaps more notable than the "plot," is the brace of faces that pop by, including Peter Gabriel, Slash, The National, Fleet Foxes, James Murphy, and Andrew Garfield. And oh, Terrence Malick gets a special thanks. Halloween treats don't get much more endearingly random this, so square away some time and click below. [Pitchfork]...

On Sunday this week, Arcade Fire's breakout debut album "Funeral" turned 10 years old. A day after, frontman Win Butler went on Canadian sports talk radio show Melnick In The Afternoon, to discuss his Sept. 20 charity basketball game Pop Vs. Jocks, coinciding with the Pop Montreal Festival. Former LCD Soundsystem leader James Murphy is scheduled to DJ the game, so the show host Mitch Melnick asked if Butler, 34, had plans like Murphy to "retire" at 40. "I never want to put out something that’s not great. This last tour we did is the best, it’s the best shows we’ve ever played, so I feel like we’re kind of right in our prime right now — so I’m not really thinking about retirement yet ’cause we’re kind of like firing on all cylinders at this point,” Butler said. Last month, Butler told the L.A. Times that...

This week has been a lot more exciting than last as it has been fantastic in the music video realm. Three of the videos in this week’s list all share beautifully choreographed routines with equally stunning cinematography. The imagery is sharp, slick and stylistic but it is the other two that stand out for me. Both Rustie’s and Arcade Fire’s videos take two conventional music video formats (lyric video and performance video) and challenge the way we look at music videos. It is great to see that there are still artists out there creative enough to take a usually rigid format and get extremely creative with it. Both videos work well as the creative elements are very simple.
Enjoy!
